S.D. treasurer gone on heels of budget One week after ‘responsible’ $6.1M cuts, and only 10 months after he took the job, education board won’t say if Mark Lee quit or was fired PAUL FONTAINE editorial@abbotsfordtimes.com

T

he Abbotsford board of education isn’t shedding light on the departure of secretary treasurer Mark Lee, just a week after the approval of a budget that included plenty of cuts. The board announced Tuesday that Lee is leaving his position with the district. He had been at his post for less than a year, starting at the district on Aug. 1, 2009. This move comes on the heels of the district approving a budget that was put together by Lee and other staff, which included teacher and support staff cuts, as well as funding cuts to programs. Lee’s task during the process was to account for a $6.1 million deficit. When asked whether Lee had quit or was laid off, Dave Stephen, the district’s manager of commu-

nications, said it was the board’s policy not to disclose that information.

“We have an important meeting with him next week and we assumed he would be there.” – Rick Guenther ADTA

abbotsfordtimes.com Board chairwoman Cindy Schafer said the board was not surprised by Lee’s departure, and also said that if it was a firing it would be a board decision, but wouldn’t confirm whether he was let go or quit. Abbotsford District Teachers’

Association president Rick Guenther said Lee has been “really good to work with.” Guenther said the announcement comes at a bad time for the ADTA because Lee was supposed to meet with the association next week to go over the budget, as teachers and programs will be, and have been, affected. “We have an important meeting with him next week and we assumed he would be there,” he said. Guenther added that the school district doesn’t include the ADTA in a lot of the discussion surrounding important district decisions. He said Lee was always easy to get a hold of and “he was really apologetic when he wasn’t able to release information.” The board has appointed deputy superintendent Kevin Godden to be acting secretary treasurer until a permanent replacement

Arrest has ties to Top 10 gangster list RAFE ARNOTT RArnott@abbotsfordtimes.com

bbotsford police arrested a man with links to a top-priority target in the UN gang after executing a warrant at an apartment in the 33900 block of Essendene Ave. Tuesday afternoon. APD Const. Ian MacDonald said the department’s gang suppression unit with help from the patrol division, APD drug enforcement unit and the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team arrested three people and seized more

than $25,000 in cocaine and heroin along with hundreds of Percocet tablets. A 21-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman are facing drug trafficking charges, while a 35-year-old man is facing both trafficking and drunk-driving charges when he returned to the apartment on a motorcycle and refused to provide a breath sample. MacDonald said the arrest of the 35-year-old male is significant because of his UN gang links. “It’s going to [send a] message to our UN target that we are well aware of his activities, the people he is dealing with, and where and when he’s doing business.” Describing the target as an individual in “the single digits’ on the department’s most wanted list of gangsters in Abbotsford, MacDonald said police are satisfied the new gang suppression team is doing its job.

The arrests are representative of the spectrum of individuals involved with organized crime, he said. “We have what you might want to consider the ‘lower hanging fruit’ in that these three individuals are connected to gangs through the drug trade, and this UN gang member,” he said. “Their association to someone in the upper end [of gangs], who is in the single digits, shows how the food chain works with organized crime,” MacDonald said. With a dedicated crime analyst, the gang unit is constantly increasing its acquisition of gang-related intelligence and capitalizing on it, he said, with Tuesday’s arrests proof positive. “We’re quickly able to connect the dots . . . affect the arrests where we can and take the drugs off the street.” Making sure organized crime knows they’re being watched helps put pressure on individuals like the UN gang member the APD is targeting, he said. “We’re well aware of him, and with this arrest it gets us closer to him,” MacDonald said.
