Dear Friends, Welcome to our 10th anniversary Gift of Time Gala presented by TELUS. Thank you for taking the time this evening to be our guests and to contemplate and celebrate how we savour life at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

As BC’s recognized pediatric palliative care provider, we play an important role in the health care system and in the lives of the children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them. The possibility of our work only comes through partnership – and we are grateful for the investment of our donors and partners.

We would like to extend our gratitude to TELUS, the presenting partner of the Gift of Time for nine years, and a dedicated partner to Canuck Place for over two decades. Thank you to our Gift of Time Gala Chairs, Zahra Mamdani, Cathy Trimble and Lindsay Geheran, and the amazing Committee for their incredible creativity, commitment, and boundless energy. Also, special thanks go to our Honourary Gift of Time Gala Committee – we truly appreciate your support. To our “flashy” volunteer crew, thank you for what you humbly do every day at Canuck Place and how you shine at our Gala. Together, each of you has uniquely engaged the community, shared the Canuck Place story with grace, and lifted our organization.

It is so wonderful to see this annual event reaching its milestone 10 th anniversary and to know that each year it is such a great success. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH) provides invaluable support to children and their families during incredibly difficult times. This event allows the community the chance to come together in celebration o f this amazing organization and to offer support so CPCH can continue to reach out and help when it is most needed.

Supporting the health and well-being of children is critically important to our TELUS team and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is one of our most important community partners in this endeavour.

Our partnership extends back nearly 20 years and has grown steadily. Since 1995, the TELUS family has contributed more than $2.3 million to Canuck Place. Equally rewarding, many of our team members and retirees, along with their families and friends, donate their time to beautify the gardens at the hospice during our annual TELUS Day of Giving.

Sam Treschow’s birthday is tomorrow, September 28.

He would have been 24 years old.

Jill and Michael Treschow started on the Canuck Place program when Sam was seven years old and received services from many aspects of the program including respite care, symptom management, end-of-life care, and bereavement counselling. Now Jill is a member of the Family Advisory Committee. Sam died at Canuck Place in July 2009; he was 18 years old and faced his challenges from a young age with strength, courage and determination. “It is serendipitous to be here tonight, sharing our story,” said Jill, “Sam would be so honoured for this opportunity to teach others through his journey.”

Sam was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) at the age of four and was referred to Canuck Place where he was accepted on the program in 1997. Jill, Michael and their younger son, Paul, had family respite stays together with Sam at Canuck Place for many years. It was here where they could take comfort in the clinical care and support provided by the team at Canuck Place.

In addition to the progressive life-limiting condition, Sam was diagnosed with cancer in October 2007.

Sam received treatment and went into remission.

Unfortunately, in early February 2009, Sam and his family received the news that his cancer returned and that there was no cure. Sam continued on the Canuck Place program receiving pain and symptom care as his cancer progressed.

“Through the support and guidance of the counsellors at Canuck Place, Mike, Paul and I were able to navigate the stormy waters of Sam’s passing,” reflects Jill. “In the darkest moments, we were shown how to celebrate all that Sam brought to our lives and cherish the lessons he taught us.”

The Treschows spent the last weeks of Sam’s life at Canuck Place where his symptom management became more challenging. On July 8, 2009 Sam passed away surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.

Canuck Place is honoured to welcome Jill, Michael and Paul Treschow to this year’s Gift of Time Gala.

Atlas Heart – Memory Block Table Centrepieces Each centerpiece for this evening was individually handcrafted by Sid Dickens in his local Vancouver studio. Known for his signature Memory Block art form, Sid used the inspiration of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH) children and families to create these one-of-a-kind pieces. Each block embraces a heart lovingly painted by a small group of CPCH children and their families in collaboration with Gift of Time Committee members and CPCH staff. Sid then faux finished each heart and fit them, like a puzzle piece, into the larger Memory Block.

The heart at the centre of the tile has great meaning for CPCH and also for Dickens: it is his favourite artistic symbol.“The word Atlas is both a symbol of strength and support,” said Dickens, “This man of Greek Myth had the strength to hold the whole world on his back. I chose to include the word Atlas in the title of this tile since the Gift of Time Gala supports the children and families of Canuck Place.”

All sales are final. There will be no exchange or refund on items by the Gift of time Gala, or the donor, except where specified.

Payment in full must be made the night of the auction. Payment by the successful bidder may be made using cash, Visa, MasterCard, Amex or personal cheque made payable to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Payment by the successful bidder should be made at the designated on site cashier immediately following the item’s sale.

Exact size of items may not be stated in the catalogue.

All auction items must be removed from the venue, Saturday, September 27, 2014 unless other arrangements have been made.

A cashier’s receipt must be presented before the removal of any purchased item.

Estimated Value for two months: $30,000 Canuck Place Children’s Hospice cares for newborns, children and teens with complex and diverse medical needs. Canuck Place administers over 150 medications and clinicians manage over 160 different conditions and diseases. Many of these diseases and conditions require specialized medical equipment, specific supplies and a variety of medications not covered for the patients. We want to ensure kids on the Canuck Place program receive the medication they need at no cost to the families who love them.

Estimated Value: $144,000 will provide 80 children with life-threatening illnesses with one day of care. And provide peace of mind for the families who love them.

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, making the right decisions can be very difficult. Parents are impacted by the 24-hour care they provide for their child. The very real stresses incurred by these families include financial pressures, relationship challenges, fatigue and distress, which can affect mental and physical health and overall quality of life for BC families. The Canuck Place Children’s Hospice care team recognizes the challenging transition young patients and families must make as a cure becomes less likely and the focus shifts to symptom management.

What is respite care? Newborns, children and teens from across BC receive medical care, pain and symptom management for complex conditions and diseases at Canuck Place. Children in our care also receive counselling, including music and play therapy, art activities, education and recreation therapy. Mom and dad and siblings get a rest too. Care is $1,800 per day per child at no cost to the families. Thanks for your compassion, care and contribution.
