This past year, our province has faced more than its share of challenges — from a relentless pandemic and unprecedented heat wave to numerous forest fires and the recent flooding in the Fraser Valley. SHARON BULGER CANUCK PLACE MOM CAMARA VAN BREEMEN CANUCK PLACE NURSE PRACTITIONER Sharon Bulger is a Canuck Place mom, whose son Cameron died on the Canuck Place program in May, 2020. The Bulger family was introduced to Canuck Place two years into their son Cameron’s cancer journey, after he was diagnosed as terminal. Sharon is a personal development coach and is currently working on a Masters in Counselling Psychology. Camara van Breemen is a Nurse Practitioner and has been caring for families at Canuck Place for over 26 years. Camara leads and operates the Nancy Chan Enhanced Community Care program, which provides extensive in-home care for families like the Bulgers, whose child has a progressive life-threatening illness.
DEBORAH DAVISON CANUCK PLACE COUNSELLOR Deborah Davison is a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist in Counselling and Bereavement Services at Canuck Place. She has been an integral part of Canuck Place families’ journeys for the past 8 years. In her work, Deborah walks alongside families, offering presence and providing them a safe space to navigate their complex journey of grief.
HENRIK AND DANIEL SEDIN SPECIAL ADVISORS, VANCOUVER CANUCKS Beloved Vancouver Canucks alumni, Henrik and Daniel Sedin are Special Advisors to the General Manager, Vancouver Canucks. Henrik Sedin leads the Canucks franchise in games played (1,330), assists (830) and points (1,070). He was the Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP in 2010. Daniel is the franchise leader in goals (393), powerplay goals (138), game-winning goals (86) and shots on goal (3,474). The Sedins have been tremendous supporters of children and families who receive care from Canuck Place. When a patient requires end-of-life care, Canuck Place is there with a loving environment in-hospice or a choice for in-home care. We look after a child and family’s clinical, emotional, cultural and spiritual care needs and the Canuck Place counselling team is there before and after a child has passed. Respite allows children the opportunity to receive care from our doctors and nurses on the clinical floor. Children receive complex care, pain and symptom management, recreation therapy and counselling, while their families receive much-needed rest, renewal and support staying in our family rooms.

Our team adeptly embraced new pandemic protocols with innovative and future-forward practices, to meet the evolving needs of our over 800 children and families as they faced magnified uncertainty. The addition of more in-home care, virtual care through telephone and video conferencing, and increased operation of the 24-hour Clinical Care Line, Canuck Place needs support for evolving virtual care.

Through the bereavement program, Canuck Place counsellors help families rebuild their lives following the devastating loss of their beloved child. We help them find the courage to face one of life’s most unimaginable events, and we walk with them through that most profound path of bereavement and loss, honouring each in their unique journey.

MOMENTS. Through cherished memories, shared experiences and sacred mementos, our Recreation Therapy program empowers children and families to build precious memories together, and celebrate life. Canuck Place hosts activities on and off-site throughout the year, including community outings in our specialty-equipped vehicles, provincial activity camps for the entire family, plus summer and winter family festivals. For families who have reached end-of-life, our skilled recreation therapists facilitate the making of keepsake items including jewellery with a child’s fingerprint, hand or foot molds, and professional photographs.
A FAMILY. Like a warm hearth during a storm, the heart of our home is in the kitchen. To our children and families, the fresh food prepared in our kitchen is nourishment for the body and comfort for the soul. Staff and volunteers lovingly prepare meals with the knowledge that they are providing sustenance during times of uncertainty. Open seven days a week, year-round, we provide hot meals twice a day, and special meals (including birthday cakes!) The cookie jar is always full at Canuck Place.
