downtown Canton. Vintage Canton is a sophisticated downtown gathering, offering distinctive center city charm alongside live music, vibrant art exhibits and, of course, quality local wine and wine from around the world!

Baloun and Regula to serve again as Vintage Canton event co-chairmen Longtime Vintage Canton committee volunteers David Baloun and David Regula will lead the Vintage Canton committee as co-chairmen for the second year in 2011.

Baloun is a vice president at Leonard Insurance Services. With more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry, he brings exceptional knowledge to the agency’s insurance sales and services. He is a 1975 graduate of Miami University and an active member of the community. Baloun is on the board of directors for the Northeast Community Center and Trillium Family Solutions. He is also involved with the United Way, Rotary Club of Canton, Family Services Fundraiser, Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges annual Campaign and is a Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival Volunteer. He has taught wine appreciation classes in the Continuing Education Department at Stark State College for 15 years and is a self-proclaimed “wine geek.” (continued on page 6)

VXI Global has made a commitment to our downtown by locating a call center in the former AT&T building on Cleveland Avenue, between Fourth and Fifth Streets NW. The company is projecting strong employee growth at the new location. Over 1,000 employees could inhabit the building over the next three years. That means more feet walking our streets and enjoying the many offerings of downtown. Aside from the new employees and capital improvements in the building, the most important aspect of VXI Global is bringing alive a building that has been virtually vacant for a number of years.

In addition to new downtown jobs, the city will be adding more live entertainment at our Canton Civic Center. The Cleveland Cavaliers re c e n t ly announced that Canton is the new official home of the Cavs NBA D-League. Now you will be able to experience professional basketball downtown. We believe that the Cavs NBA D-League is a first class operation that has sustainability and quality due to the backing of the Cavaliers and the NBA. We also think that there will be a lot of spillover marketing opportunities between our region and the Cavs.

M o re happenings include the opening of Lucca, a classic Italian re staurant, which opened last month. The Canton Development Partnership has also been experimenting with some new events downtown. We hope you’ve enjoyed Cinema in the City movie nights on the Kresge green and 4th Street Concerts on the newly lighted street in the Arts District. Read on for more about all of these exciting developments in this issue.

Canton Indoor Flea Market opens downtown in September Beginning in mid-to-late September, local entrepreneur extraordinaire Pete Papacostas (owner of Pete’s Grill and Pizza) will be launching his new downtown vision, the Canton Indoor Flea Market.

And in the process he has breathed new life into yet another building in downtown Canton.

Seeing a unique need for downtown Canton (and greater Canton in general), Papacostas purchased the old Sanitary Milk Company building located at 807 Cherry Ave. NE earlier this year. Since that time he has been fervently investing in the refurbishment and build-outs, maintaining many architectural details and design quirks of the one of a kind structure. He has created a unique shopping and bargaining experience perfect for flea market enthusiasts and newbies alike.

With over 50 assembled vendor booths available during Phase I of the project, the Canton Indoor Flea Market offers a wide variety of vendors for shoppers to enjoy. Vendors include antiques dealers, collectibles, jewelry, paintings, bulk foods, electronics and more!

Phase II will enhance the experience, adding 15 vendor booths on the second floor, as well as beginning to make use of the additional 25,000 sq. ft. that the sizeable building boasts on the backside.

In addition to the wide variety of vendors, visitors can grab a bite to eat at Sammie’s Concessions or the Pete’s Grill Hot Dog Wagon, or buff up their kicks at Antonio Bentley’s Shoe Shine booth. Don’t worry about missing the big game come football season, you can watch the games on the big screen, or enjoy seasonal entertainment of all sorts while you peruse the booths.

Canton Indoor Flea Market will be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Ample parking is available on-street and in adjacent lots.

Cavaliers’ new NBA D-League tipping off in Canton

T

he Cleveland Cavaliers will own and operate their new NBA Development League franchise in Canton! The Cavaliers acquired the former New Mexico Thunderbirds franchise, which has ceased operations, and will now become the fifth NBA team to currently own and operate their own NBA D-League affiliate, joining Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. As owner/operators, the Cavaliers will have exclusive control over all basketball and business elements for the franchise.

“If you’re a basketball fan, you’re going to have a great time. And even if you’re not, you’re going to have a great time! Our goal is to put on the same caliber show here in Canton that you’d see at The Q, just on a slightly smaller scale,” said Scott Woodruff, senior vice president and CEO of the new Canton D-League.

Entering its 11th season, the NBA Development League is the NBA’s official minor league. Canton becomes the 16th team in the league and will begin play in the upcoming 2011-12 season at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. This year’s season includes 24 home games at the Civic Center. The 10+ players making up the inaugural season roster will be in

Canton beginning with training camps in November, through the end of the season in May. Season ticket information is available at CantonNBA.com, with great seats starting at only $125 per season ticket seat. The season package features all 24 regular season home games of the Canton D-League in Canton, PLUS the Cleveland Cavaliers preseason game in Canton, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21, vs. the Houston Rockets. Each fan will receive a free Canton D-League T-shirt with their deposit. Single-game tickets will go on sale closer to the start of the season, and the full schedule for the D-League team in Canton will be announced soon.

To make the Canton Memorial Civic Center NBAready, initial updates to the arena will include the addition of regulation flooring and hoops, scoring tables, signage, courtside boxes and perimete r seats, as well as upgrades to the permanent lighting, locker room facilities and offices.

The operation will also be unveiling the new name of the Canton D-League team in the coming weeks.

Once the new name and branding are unveiled, merchandise for the team will be available at the Civic Center.

“We are thrilled to be the home of minor league basketball for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This is an incredible opportunity for the citizens of Canton to experience professional basketball in their hometown, and I am grateful that the Cavaliers recognized Canton as an ideal market for their next generation of basketball operations,” said M ayor William J. Healy II, mayor of the City of Canton.

When asked his thoughts on what makes Canton the perfect location for the new D-League, Woodruff doesn’t hesitate: “As we like to say in Cleveland, what’s not to like! Canton is 40 minutes away from Cleveland Clinic Courts, which is our Cavaliers player development facility, and 50 minutes away from Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland. It makes so much sense from an operational standpoint. We’ve always enjoyed broad support throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. And we already have a great deal of support here.”

Woodruff adds, “We are sincerely extremely happy to be here. We’re aware of the proud heritage of this area, we want to honor that heritage, continue to earn support, and help build the future.”

YWCA Gateway House II Project nears completion The YWCA is nearing com pletion on Gateway House II (626 Walnut Ave. NE in downtown Canton), an $8.6 million project that provides permanent supportive housing (PSH) to homeless individuals living with disabilities.

In addition to housing, the program provides some food, clothing, and hygiene items on a need basis, as well as furnishings from donations to the furniture donation program. Each unit has its own bathroom, kitchenette and a sleeping space separated from the living room. There is also a shared commercial kitchen and a resident lounge. Community Services of Stark County provides on-site case management and counseling services for residents.

“Our residents are looking to be part of the community. They’re not expecting to have everything handed to them. Those without are not without dignity.

When you restore dignity and allow people to have it, they give back, they take care of things,” said Marga ret Egbert, dire c tor of the YWCA of Canton. Egbert believes that people will come to Gateway House II in five years and the building will be well maintained because the residents will take care of it as though it were their own.

The building has 30 efficiency units (14 of which could be converted to one-bedrooms), seven onebedroom units and three two-bedroom units. All of the rooms are spacious, with efficiencies beginning at 477 sq. ft., up to over 850 sq. ft. in the largest unit.

The durable, commercial-grade project was completed with the utmost economic efficiency, utilizing local union labor and local Northeast Ohio materials, almost all of which were sourced from Stark County, bringing funds back into our community. It was also completed with environmental efficiency, using geothermal heating and cooling and other green elements. They also completed the project in less than one year from when investment funding was received.

The finishing touches are being put on the building now, and Egbert believes that they will reach maximum occupancy shortly after the permits are filed.

The lowest base rent for the units is $446, including all utilities.

All that will remain is the completion of the YWCA Family Shelter on the first floor. The project needs $100,000 in order to be completed. Egbert hopes that the local community will step forward and help fund the completion. While the YWCA is looking for donations to the furniture donation program – good used dressers, beds, kitchen tables and chairs, as well as household products – they are really hoping that area residents might consider “adopting an apartment” in the family shelter to help with completion of the units financially.

“We don’t just store people in boxes, we build them back into the community. If people don’t have community or buy in, they don’t have ownership and pride. We are all social creatures. We need to offer

that to people, especially our neediest folks,” said Egbert.

Egbert believes that this project demonstrates that you can build a beautiful building for a low cost. She feels that the residents of Gateway House II and the community alike can both be proud of this project.

“This is how you bring a city back. This shows it’s well worth the effort to invest in our downtown. The City of Canton and the county have been wonderful partners, and we had five wonderful foundations who gave funding to make this project a reality.”

Regula is a licensed real estate broker and auctioneer.

He is a graduate of Leadership Stark County’s Signature Program and Government Academy, as well as the FBI Citizen’s Academy. He is the president of the board for Bethlehem Township, and is the past vice chairman of the Ohio Turnpike Commission.

Get your “2nd Hand Treasures” first-hand in downtown Canton’s new consignment shop Just in time for July’s First Friday, downtown Canton got a sensational dose of retail in the form of 2nd Hand Treasures! The store carries furniture and home décor, clothing for men, women and children, books and games, jewelry and accessories, electronics and office equipment, along with some sporting goods, vintage and antique items.

The new consignment shop serves as a downtown “outlet” version of the 7,000 sq. ft. flagship location in Jackson Township that opened in 2009. Owner Rick Rorick remodeled the space at 130 3rd Street NW (across Third Street from the Kresge Green Space), filling it with great consignment items from the original shop. The downtown location stocks overstocks or items that have lapsed past the date of the original consignment terms, and in many cases, these items are priced even lower than the original low price!

“Watching the transformation of the downtown area has been amazing,” said Rorick. “And being able to open our second location in the heart of the Canton Arts District was a perfect opportunity for us.” Rorick’s other businesses, Rorick’s Drywall, Contractor’s Unlimited and Advanced Restoration, have been instrumental in many of the renovation projects downtown, so having another business in a c o mp l etely diffe rent arena is bringing Rorick’s vision full circle. “We are lucky to have all of our different businesses involved and working together as a team.”

The shop is hip and relaxed, and the prices are unbelievably low. Rorick said that so far, customers visiting the downtown location are looking for even more clothing and accessories, so they’re working on bringing more of those items downtown.

The downtown location is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dur-

ing special events, including First Fridays, as well as by appointment.

Rorick is committed to making the downtown space a “go-to” location for those living and working downtown. “The great thing is that the store will have something different every time you visit, so it’s worth it to stop in often.”

That can be said of the main location in Jackson Township as well, where consignments are accepted every Tuesday and Thursday. The new downtown location does not currently accept consignments, but Rorick hopes to be able to accommodate consignors in the future. With over 500 consignors, Rorick sees unlimited possibilities for the shop and looks forward to growing along with the other downtown businesses to make Canton a “destination” shopping location.

Local charities include the Canton Preservation Society, Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio, American Red Cross, Stark County Library Foundation, United Way of Stark County and Wishes Can Happen, among many others. Many items that don’t sell are also donated to organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill and American Re s c u e Workers.

VXI Global Solutions brings 1,000 jobs to downtown Canton VXI Global Solutions Inc. launched its fourth domestic site in the former AT&T building located at 401-411 Cleveland Ave. NW to house a new call center bringing 1,000 jobs to downtown Canton.

The company hired more than 100 employees within the first two months of operations, adding as many as 200 more employees by the end of last month. The newly purchased building can accommodate approximately 1,500 seats and is expected to be fully occupied within the next 23 years.

“We are extremely excited that VXI Global Solutions Inc. has made a decision to make a major investment in our downtown,” said Canton Mayor William J. Healy II. “Not only will this bring 1,000 new employees to the downtown arts district, but it also ensures a long-term presence for VXI Global Solutions Inc. in Canton.”

VXI has begun renovations at the former AT&T building. Renovations will continue on the other floors as the company continues to recruit, train and place employees at the downtown Canton operation.
