Chamber commends Stark community for making 911 a winner Stark County’s 911 emergency dispatch project, a collaboration of local governments throughout the county, finished second in the EfficientGovNow.org contest, which means it will receive $100,000 toward the cost of establishing safe, efficient and modern 911 emergency dispatching throughout the county.

EfficientGovNow.org, a project of the Fund For Our Economic Future in Cleveland, offered up to $330,000 for the most popular government collaboration projects in Northeast Ohio. Dozens of local governments collaborated to propose projects, and 10 projects were chosen by the Fund for a vote of Northeast Ohio residents. Voting took place throughout the month of May by Internet, phone and mail-in ballot.

“This result shows the power of our community when it gets behind a worthwhile cause,” said

Dennis P. Saunier, president and CEO of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.“We look forward to other opportunities for the community to rally behind more good-government ideas. And our congratulations to Stark County 911 Director Joe Concatto and his partners. We look forward to their success in establishing a modern 911 system in Stark County.”

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce helped promote the 911 project because of its belief in the power of government collaboration.

The Chamber thanks its members, Chamber committee volunteers, and partners throughout the community for helping to generate enough votes to make 911 a winner. The Chamber enjoyed working on this project with the Stark Development Board and other Stark County (continued on next page)

Chambers of Commerce, The Repository and The Independent, which were generous in their efforts to promote the contest in print and on their websites, WHBC-AM radio, which promoted the contest several times, particularly on the Ron Ponder Show, and WHOF-FM 101.7, and WDPN-AM 1310 in Alliance, which also offered broadcast time to promote Stark County’s entry.

First place in the EfficientGovNow.org contest went to Mahoning County for a land-bank project to stabilize the housing market. The Mahoning project will receive $61,420, the amount it asked for. Third place went to a collaboration of 16 Cleveland suburbs to help promote the generation and use of solar power. Like Stark 911, this project asked for and will receive $100,000.

A fourth, small-community award was made to a collaboration of cities and villages in five counties for Geographic Information System mapping. This group asked for $100,000 and will receive

$70,000, according to EfficientGovNow and the Fund For Our Economic Future This is the second year of the EfficientGovNow.org contest and the second year for a Stark County project to be in the finals. Last year, Stark County’s entry finished fourth.

Though Stark County 911 finished second overall, it received more first-place points than any other winner, 9,543 compared with 9,126 for the Mahoning County land bank. Voters could choose up to three projects when they voted, and first-, second- and third-place votes were given different point values.

The Stark County 911 project, when implemented, is expected to save Stark County local governments an estimated $2.3 million per year in the cost of running the existing, inefficient 911 system.

Employer Intentional Tort Law and VSSRs in Ohio: July Safety Council Luncheon In April, the Supreme Court of Ohio issued a landmark decision on workplace intentional torts.

At the July Stark County Safety Council Luncheon, attorney Tim Campbell Tim Campbell will address the recent Supreme Court decision, the law itself, as well as expected developments and consequences of Ohio’s intentional tort statute. Campbell will also address Violation of Specific Safety Regulations (VSSRs). He will explain what exactly a VSSR is and the impact to employers in relation to workers’ compensation claims.

Presently, he represents employers in retail and wholesale food processing, light and heavy manufacturing, interstate trucking, gas and petroleum processing and transportation, as well as a number of commercial and health care facilities. Prior to entering private practice, Campbell was employed by the State of Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and by a third-party administrator specializing in Ohio workers’ compensation matters. Since 1981, he has successfully represented employers before the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and Industrial Commission as well as in court, including the Supreme Court of Ohio.

2-Mile and 5-Mile Races Sunday, Aug. 1, 8 a.m.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Over 1,600 walkers and runners will cross the finish line in front of the steps at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, providing a high-energy atmosphere and wonderful photo opportunities.

Costumed characters will accompany children six and under as they race to the finish in the 400-meter free Kids Fun Run, where everyone is a winner! New this year is the addition of a Competitive Walking Division in the 5-Mile Race, with prizes awarded to the top three finishers.

Learn to think quickly on your feet. Put yourself in one professional development situation every day that makes you uncomfortable and prove to yourself that you can get through it. Eliminate negative influences from your life. Learn to think like a business owner, there is a cost/benefit to every decision you make.

Leadership Stark County is accepting applications from young professionals for their annual Spotlight Stark County program. Spotlight is a six-week program for younger professionals, age 25-34, designed to inform, inspire and involve.

The Quest Cooks! Rock N’ Soul Annual Dinner Party and Auction raised $124,000 to benefit the Quest Student Prevention Programs and the Women’s Residential Treatment Program of Quest Recovery and Prevention Services. This year’s event, held at the Barrette Center at Walsh University on June 4, honored local historic preservationist, Steve Coon of Coon Restoration and Sealants.

The WRL Web Team has announced the hire of Michael Carrino as a web application developer. Carrino comes to WRL after working as a freelance contractor specializing in new media, including a stint at the NASA Glenn Center, where he created web applications. His work at WRL will entail working on web site and application development using both proprietary and open source platform products. The Bath Township resident is a 1986 graduate of The University of Akron, and since that time worked for both radio stations and advertising agencies. He was also one of the early adopters in getting customers to advertise and sell products online.

The Stark County Community Action Agency announces a new self-sufficiency initiative designed to assist aspiring entrepreneurs. The Micro-Enterprise Development Program consists of two parts to help entrepreneurs with their business planning: training and funding.

Robert J. Shearer gave the commencement address at Lake Erie College as 181 students graduated in the 151st class on Sunday, May 9.
