Message from the Chairman ...

Incoming Chairman’s Message: Rick McQueen, Retired President/CEO, Akron-Canton Airport It is a humbling thought that I have the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce for 2019.

I want thank outgoing Chair Jim Porter for his outstanding leadership in 2018. I seem to have the knack of following great leaders wherever I go: first, Fred Krum at the airport and now Jim at the Chamber.

His leadership, as well as those before him, was vital in continuing the Chamber’s mission to lead the region in business and community development through collaboration and innovation.

It is an exciting time for our region. Last year the Chamber completed an update to our strategic plan, assuring that our work aligns with the needs of our region. It allows Denny Saunier and his outstanding staff to focus their efforts on the important tasks ahead. This includes continuing to partner with the City of Canton on the revitalization of downtown, including Market Square/Centennial Plaza development; strengthening our partnership with the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the continued development of Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village; expanding our partnership on a regional level with the Stark Economic Development Board and other partners, both within Stark County and throughout the region; and last, but most importantly, finding new ways to provide value to our member businesses and all businesses in our community.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the Chamber and our work. I look forward to serving you, as do my fellow board members. We encourage you to get involved; your help can make the difference in us meeting our goals for the year. Our most successful Chamber members are our most engaged members. It will be my pleasure to meet you at the many Chamber events occurring throughout the year.

Thinking of Selling Your Business?

When the time to exit rolls around, it’s extremely important to get the most value out of your company, because there are no “do-overs” when exiting your business.

Take a long look at doing a DIY or hybrid DIY sale of your business. We recommend this approach because today—more than ever before—you have excellent free resources available to you, including: • Free advice from experienced retired owners and executives • Excellent internet assets • A dedicated Small Business Administration (SBA) Start early The first major guidance for squeezing the most money out of the sale of your company is to start early. And, by early ... like five years or so. Any sale that has to happen within a short time frame is almost doomed from the get-go. Further, early succession planning will pay dividends from the day you begin to the day you sell.

Again, the good news is you have great DIY resources available. There are good articles on the internet that will give you an overview of the steps you should take to groom your business in preparation for a sale.

Market your business Brokers are going to take a minimum 10% cut. It’s true they provide good services for their share of the pot, but the internet has leveled the playing field in one of the most important services they provide: Marketing your business.

Almost every purchase today begins with a search on the internet, and we don’t think the shoppers looking to buy your business are any different.

If you’re unfamiliar with placing ads on search engines, check out the services offered by DIY business-selling sites

Start the final countdown When crunch time arrives for completing the sale, there are some legal and financial matters to take care of. The SBA offers an excellent 30-minute video exercise “Selling Your Business” that sheds light on some of these important issues.

Because you don’t want to make mistakes closing the sale or not be prepared for the tax implications, it’s a good idea to connect with an attorney and an accountant as you get closer to your actual sale.

We know that a DIY business sale isn’t for everyone, but we strongly urge you to investigate this option before you sign on with a broker. Talk to others who have chosen this route and then honestly evaluate how much time you’ll have to work on your own sale.

Chamber Names New Directors

F O R EDU CATION I NI TIATIV E S A ND P U BL IC POLI C Y The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome two new members to our Executive Management Team, Barb Hammontree Bennett, Director of Education Initiatives, and Jeff Dafler, Director of Public Policy.

Barb Bennett is responsible for connecting businesses with education systems as part of the team addressing the Chamber’s goal to expand the region’s talent development.

Barb graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BS in Civil Engineering. She spent the next 28 years in the private engineering and surveying consulting field with her family’s business, Hammontree & Associates, Limited where she was on the Board of Managers and manager of the civil/site land development department as she is both a registered engineer and surveyor.

In 2014, she accepted a position as Director of Administrative Services with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District where she was also assigned manager of special projects.

She is a graduate of the third class of what was known as Leadership Canton and has served in leadership capacities as Chairman of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, General Chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, and Chairman of the Aultman Health Foundation.

She currently serves on boards that include the Aultman Health Foundation, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, Stark Development Board, Stark Education Partnership, Walsh Advisory Board, the Stream + Wetlands Foundation and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition.

Barb was recognized as a one of the 30 Leaders of 30 Years of Leadership Stark County, a 2018 Woman of Impact, and inducted in class of 2012 YWCA Woman’s Hall of Fame. Barb and her husband, Stark County Engineer Keith Bennett, live in North Canton with their 2 children.

With more than 25 years of leadership experience in the public and private sectors, Jeff Dafler is responsible for helping the Chamber maintain strong, positive relationships with elected officials at the federal, state and local levels. Under Jeff’s leadership, the Chamber serves as an effective advocate of business interests by arriving at consensus positions on issues that clearly affect business growth and wellbeing. These issues may take the form of proposed legislation or regulation.

Jeff began his career working in international political and economic affairs as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State (1991-2000), including assignments at diplomatic posts in Australia, Poland and Italy. He is a recipient of the State Department’s Superior Honor Award, Meritorious Honor Award and Franklin Award.

Beginning in 2000, Jeff began working in the private sector, holding leadership roles in communication and public policy at NCR Corporation (2000-2005) and The Timken Company (2005-2018), where he held the position of Vice PresidentGovernment Affairs. In 2018, Jeff launched The Dafler Company, a public policy and strategic communications consulting firm helping clients and communities navigate an increasingly complex public landscape.

Jeff holds bachelor’s degrees in international studies and French from Miami University and a master’s degree in communication from the University of Dayton. He serves as adjunct faculty in Communication at Walsh University and has published academic research in the areas of communication, identity and organizational behavior. He has taken on numerous non-profit leadership roles, including serving as a board member at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, The Wilderness Center, the Timken Charitable and Educational Fund and the College of Business Administration’s Global Management Center at Kent State University.

Education Committee Update FE BRUARY 2019 It is with great excitement and pleasure

that I join the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce as Director of Education Initiatives.

First, thank you to the Chamber’s Education Committee Chairman, Chris Goff, and Employers Health for funding this position. It is my commitment to wake up every morning with energy and attention directed towards connecting our region’s businesses and educational systems. In collaboration with Chamber departments and external stakeholders we will work toward the goal identified in the Chamber’s new strategic plan: “Expand the region’s talent development capacity by attracting, training and retraining the workforce and leadership to sustain the community.”

The 46 members of the education committee meet typically on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This year the committee is scheduled to meet at educational institutions and at Stark

County businesses in order to better understand differing perspectives of the issues faced in developing talent.

The responsibility of building our region’s talent lies with many entities including our businesses, educational systems, parents and students. Our committee will focus on business engagement with our educational institutions and students as we move forward. A call to action for businesses to become engaged from the middle school level through college will be presented as we analyze data, talk to businesses, set goals, strategize and prioritize initiatives.

Currently there is a call for businesses to get engaged by exhibiting at least one day in the upcoming Greater Stark County Career Expo on April 1-3 at various locations throughout Stark County. Over 1,800 motivated Stark County high school juniors and seniors trained in career programs are prepared to interview and enter the workforce in our region.

These students are on a wide variety of career paths that include healthcare,

business, multi-media, IT, cosmetology, manufacturing and the trades. For more information contact Bryan Hollinger at the Stark Educational Service Center at 330309-2599.

Lastly, in support of education we are pleased to announce the Chamber was one of the major sponsors of the Greater Canton Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission’s 27th Annual Mayors’ Breakfast held on January 17. Eight scholarships were awarded to Stark county high school and college students who exhibited academic excellence, leadership and thoughtful essays in response to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and mission.

Many more opportunities for business engagement in building our region’s talent pipeline will be presented as together we tackle this important issue to strengthen our Stark County community.

Public Policy Update When we think of the swings in financial markets or in the weather, the word “volatility” comes easily to mind. The same term describes the public policy environment as we enter 2019. Although last year’s elections failed to produce the magnitude of change some had predicted, the results provided plenty of uncertainty for business.

As we move into 2019, your Chamber team is working to strengthen old relationships and build new ones to ensure we are able anticipate and influence public policy developments with the potential to affect the business operating environment.

We welcome your input to help us identify priorities for public policy advocacy in 2019 and beyond, and we will be keeping you abreast of our efforts at the local, state and national levels as the year unfolds.

At the federal level, the Democrats captured the House of Representatives and a few senior officials left the Trump administration. While there are some areas where collaboration could produce positive results (e.g., infrastructure), the new year started under a government shutdown triggered by the impasse over funding for a border wall.

At the state level, Republicans retained control of the legislature and all statewide offices in Ohio. We will see plenty of new faces in key positions, however, as the DeWine administration staffs up and new committee assignments are made in the Ohio House and Senate.

Queen & Royal Ambassadors

PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL QUEEN & ROYAL AMBASSADORS PAGEANT SIGNALS START OF 2019 CELEBRATION! The Pro Football Hall of Fame and the annual Enshrinement Festival including Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls will be celebrating 56 years of excellence in 2019, with the first event being the Queen & Royal Ambassadors Pageant on Thursday, May 9.

This year, the age criteria for contestants has been revised to lower the age limits by one year, thus offering greater opportunity for high school students to participate. The criteria states that on or before July 1, 2019, candidates must be a minimum of 17 years old, but not older than 22 years of age. Additionally, candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County.

Applications and tickets will be available online at www.ProFootballHOFEF. com or at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday, Feb. 11.

The deadline to submit the application and a $70 fee is Monday, March 25, by 5 p.m.

All potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the eighth annual “Queen & Royal Ambassadors Pageant Informational Session” which will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce from 9 to 11 a.m. This session will help prospective participants decide if they would like to enter the Pageant, and to give them a better idea of what to expect if they do.

Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2018 Queen Pageant DVD which includes footage of the ambassador opportunities, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process. DOUG FROELICH TO SERVE AS GENERAL CHAIRMAN; TODD STOVER NAMED GENERAL VICE CHAIRMAN The Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have named two long-time community volunteers to the top leadership positions for the 2019 festivities that will celebrate the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement. Doug Froelich will serve as General Chairman and Todd Stover as General Vice Chairman.

Froelich and Stover will lead the nearly 5,000-person volunteer corps that helps with the planning, coordination and execution of the events surrounding the enshrinement of the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2019. The volunteers provide a world-class experience to the hundreds of thousands of fans who will descend upon the Canton community for the 2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement festivities including Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls. The annual event kicks off the NFL’s season and centers around the enshrinement of the Class of 2019 that will take place on Saturday, August 3 in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Froelich, a 28-year veteran of the volunteer team, has served on the Hall of Fame Hospitality and Enshrinement Committees

and the 50th Anniversary Committee, as well as chairing the Balloon Classic Committee and twice chairing the Security and Logistics Committee.

Froelich’s extensive volunteer efforts have been guided by his definition of volunteerism, “giving of your time, talents, and resources without expectation of reward.”

He graduated from North Canton Hoover High School, Kent State University, and Ashland University. He is a teacher, National Honor Society adviser and senior class adviser at Green High School, and also previously served on the Green Local School District Leadership Team and as the Language Arts Department chairman.

This summer’s celebration will be Stover’s 40th year as a volunteer including 39 years on the Hall of Fame Security Committee, the past 11 as the committee chairman. Stover, the Capital Portfolio Manager for Ohio Edison/Penn Power, is a past-president and chairman of the

JacksonBelden Jaycees, past chairman of Parish Council of Saints Philip & James Church, and is a member of the Edison Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus #11037, North Canton Eagles Aerie 2223, and North Canton Elks #2029. He and his wife Shelly are the proud parents of two children.

Froelich and Stover will work closely with the staffs at the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to provide training and resources to enhance an already solid foundation of dedicated community volunteers. The volunteer corps provides the support necessary to host the large celebration each summer in Canton. It’s a story as old as time, with a twist.

Boy meets girl in a downtown bar. He’s an artist, she’s a business student. They both love handmade things and start a business where she sells what he makes.

The business grows and they marry.

Four dogs soon follow. They all work happily ever after in a big steel building with a hand-crafted neon sign and great highway visibility.

Studio Arts & Glass began in a dimly lit bar off Court Street in downtown Canton. There, Bob Joliet met Wendy Warren.

Bob, a banker’s son, was a Fine Arts graduate from Kent State University whose great-grandfather once ran the giant DueberHampden Watch Company where Wendy’s grandmother worked. Talk about coincidence. Wendy was a teacher’s daughter working at a local jewelry store to pay her way through school. They fit together like pieces of a complex puzzle.

By the time they met, Bob had turned his artistic talents to making stained glass art. Wendy loved to sell and was soon taking orders for more than Bob could make, so they opened an arts and gift store to sell the work of other artists, as well.

Bob kept creating stained glass works in his downtown studio in an abandoned funeral home.

At age 20, Wendy began cold-calling architects and interior designers many years older. She made it work and word of Bob’s artistic talents spread from job to job. When the areas largest stained glass company fled to Florida, Studio Arts & Glass became the place to go for new stained glass creations and renovations. Using many of the skilled craftsmen the competitor left behind, Studio Arts & Glass began to boom.

Heady stuff for a young couple who’d just become partners in marriage as well as business. Together they crafted a professional and personal partnership from delicate stained glass fragments fit together to last a lifetime.

Over the last 40 years the Joliet’s have painstakingly built one of Stark County’s most unique businesses. Their work has found its way to churches, offices and homes in places as far-flung as a Caribbean island only accessible by boat, and a top secret government office deep in a mountain cave. Their art gallery and gift shop is brimming with works by some of the most talented glass artists in America. The Ohio State Capitol building boasts a stained glass Great Seal hand-crafted in their studio. They are meticulously restoring 56 stained glass windows for Green Lawn Abbey in Columbus, one of the states most ambitious renovations. People travel from near and far to attend their workshops. They also offer artistic design, production and installation in one hand-crafted package, making it easy for architects, designers and homeowners to get high-quality, original stained glass windows.

Stored behind their studio are weather-worn stained glass windows rescued from magnificent old buildings. Roaming through the building are four beautiful, large dogs also rescued from places they were no longer wanted. BIZ Bitz While the Canton Museum of Art (CMA) is currently showcasing more than 200 major works from its Permanent Collection in the exhibition “In The Parisian Salon,” featuring artists such as John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Edward Hopper, something even more spectacular is occurring behind the scenes. To ensure these and other works are preserved and protected for all to enjoy for years to come, CMA is renovating its collection storage areas to install new floor-mounted art storage racks. This new system will provide heightened protection to some of the Museum’s largest and most important works, while increasing storage capacity and allowing greater ease of movement and safety for curatorial staff when handling the art. Work started in January on this vital, nearly $300,000 capital project, which is generously supported in our community.

Also at the Canton Museum of Art is “Sweet Stuff: The Story of Chocolate,” the focus of the February program of Canton Fine Arts Associates. Presented

by Kim Kenney, Curator of the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, the event will be held at the Canton Museum of Art on February 13th from 11:30am to 2pm and will include a catered lunch plus free chocolate samples. This event is open to the public, the cost is $15 per person and reservations are required. The reservation deadline is February 7th. The First Tee of Canton has teamed up with The Junior League of Stark County, Ohio, Inc. to offer a new program in the

spring of 2019. The Healthy Habits cooking program derives from The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits curriculum, which focuses on social, emotional and physical health in young people. The 5-week program will be offered at The First Tee of Canton’s facility located at 2525 25th Street NE in Canton starting Saturday, March 9th. Volunteers from the Junior League will work with the kids to introduce cooking elements and making healthy choices through the program. Space is limited to sixteen participants ages 9 – 18. Registration is now open online at www.thefirstteecanton. org. Cost is $45, which includes all needed supplies and an apron for the participants.

DEVILLE DEVELOPMENTS Canton, Ohio

Sitting in the Stark County Courthouse in the early 1960s Roger DeVille had an epiphany. He noticed that although 3,000 couples a year were marrying in Stark County, an equal number were divorcing.

3,000 suddenly single people were looking for apartments in competition with the post-war Baby Boomers just starting to leave their parent’s homes.

Lots of people needed apartments and Stark County had few.

Roger DeVille has lived his life at the intersection of hard work, keen insight and good luck. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting from Walsh University, DeVille began working as an accountant at the Timken Company. With the needs of a growing family in mind, he started acquiring and fixing up small apartment buildings in the less expensive parts of town. He did almost all the work himself after normal working hours and while also enrolled in a special post-graduate degree program at the University of Akron. Downtime was not high on his bucket list.

Soon DeVille was ready to begin building his first new 12-unit apartment building and was thrilled to see it rent out before the last shingle was nailed in place. It all seemed too easy, so he started researching the housing situation in Stark County leading to his discovery of a giant hole in the market.

Over the next few years, DeVille set about changing the nature of Stark County’s housing stock. Soon he owned over 1,000 fully rented apartments. Then luck intervened again to change his direction.

Whenever he bought new land to develop, there always seemed to be a small piece that wouldn’t work for apartments. Strips like the old Avalon Restaurant on 30th Street in Canton. DeVille wanted the acreage behind for a new apartment complex, but had no idea what to do with the vacant restaurant. One day he got a call from a Columbus-area man named David Thomas.

Yes, that David Thomas, founder of Wendy’s Restaurants.

In short order Thomas offered DeVille a 20+ year lease, DeVille began building Wendy’s restaurants and commercial developments became his new business. And what a business it became.

DeVille knew the building business inside out because of those late hours spent renovating and building his own apartment buildings. He also quickly figured out the locations where retailers would most like to locate new stores. Working with blue-chip companies like Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Marc’s, Starbucks and more, DeVille Developments soon earned a sterling reputation for their ability to find good land and build good stores on time.

DeVille still has the ability to see the next wave of change.

Now he sees a future where brick and mortar retail stores are smaller and developers will have to come up with ingenious ways to save on material and labor costs. Over 50 years after he built his first Wendy’s, Roger DeVille is ready for the next challenge.
