Rick L. Haines appointed board chairman of the Canton Regional Chamber for 2012 I’m excited for all of the opportunities in front of us as I begin my term as chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. I’ve lived in this community for 30 years, and am proud to be given the chance to lead this group of like-minded business leaders.

There are three initiatives that the Chamber will focus on in the coming year: • Jobs • Economic Development • Image

Jobs. We’ve had success in attracting new jobs to Stark County. We want to continue that momentum to increase the economic stability of our residents. We will maintain our support of existing business partners and our expanding membership base. Looking to the future, oil and gas exploration in the region’s Utica shale deposits offers the prospect of increased employment. The Chamber stands ready to support this industry as it expands into the area.

Economic Development. We will continue our work with the City of Canton and the Stark Development Board to make Canton a competitive, strong choice for new businesses to this area – and for business expansion. The 2012 year will be one for promoting Canton and Stark County as a headquarters site for energy companies coming into our region.

Image. A strong and vibrant downtown serves as a source of pride to residents every time they write their city address. The Chamber Board will work diligently to bring additional business to downtown and to the Mills Business Park. Our arts district is an example of how enthusiasm for the area can build when jobs, activity, ideas and energy are present. CHAMBER NEWS Chamber announces new hires and promotions The Canton Regional Chamber has announced several new hires and promotions for its organization and departments. In the Chamber’s marketing department, Sarah Lutz has joined the organization as graphics manager, and Amy Nelson has been named events and marketing manager; Tonja Marshall has joined the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau as sports promotions manager; Krista Shuff Schumacher has joined the Canton Development Partnership as event manager, and Annette Rosenberger has been promoted to office manager for the CDP. Sarah Lutz has joined the Chamber as graphics manager, where she designs and delivers on almost every creative project for the Chamber and its various departments. A native of Hopewell Twp., Pa., Lutz grew up in North Canton where she graduated from Hoover High School.

She earned her bachelor’s in graphic design with a metalsmithing minor at The University of Akron. Since 2003, Lutz has worked for the Chamber both in-house (2003-2004) and then as a contractor since that time, providing marketing and graphic design services for the Chamber and its departments. Before accepting the position as graphics manager, she was marketing communications coordinator at Arrow International, Inc. a Cleveland manufacturing company. She resides in Akron’s Merriman Valley and is the proud mom of daughter, Sunita, 6, and son, Ketan, 4.

Amy Nelson has joined the Chamber as events and marketing manager, where she oversees the Chamber’s business and networking events, and large annual events, including the upcoming 98th Annual Dinner. She works closely with the marketing department to promote Chamber events, programs and initiatives.

Nelson has a degree in applied business from Kent State University. She has background in event management, sales, marketing and bookkeeping. Nelson was previously vice president of the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, and has served on the board of directors for the last five years for her local American Red Cross Chapter. She maintains and enjoys involvement in her community.

Tonja Marshall has joined the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau as sports promotions manager. She comes to the CVB after working for nearly eight years at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Prior to working at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Marshall obtained a bachelor’s in public relations at Ursuline College. Shortly thereafter, she began as admissions/ operations coordinator at the Hall of Fame, and was later promoted to travel/tourism marketing specialist.

In addition to her experience at the Hall of Fame, she has participated on many boards and committees.

She has participated on both the CVB’s Tourism Advisory Committee and Sports Advisory Committee, and served four years on the board of directors for Adventures in Northeast Ohio. Marshall is also a recent graduate of the Ohio Travel Association’s Tourism Leadership Academy.

Krista Shuff Schumacher has joined the Canton Development Partnership as event manager. In her new role, she is responsible for all management aspects of the downtown events, including Taste of Canton, Canton Blues Festival, Zing in the City, Vintage Canton, Light up Downtown, and the Canton Farmers’ Market, among others.

She began her career in the entertainment industry, working primarily on large scale productions at venues such as Blossom Music Center, Quicken Loans Arena and Playhouse Square. She earned her bachelor’s in business and organizational communication, and continued her education at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, refining her skills in digital design. She previously worked for the Canton Palace Theatre as technical director, where she produced and managed hundreds of events per year, entertaining over 200,000 patrons. Upon taking this position, the Akron native became a strong advocate for the betterment of downtown Canton and has given her time both as a volunteer and a patron of the many activities and businesses that Canton relies on to continue its great strides towards the future. She currently sits on the board for a non-profit organization that produces the show “Old Fashioned Canton Christmas,” which aims to end hunger during the holidays, and is a member of ystark! Schumacher has also produced a photography exposition at the Canton Museum of Art titled “Iceland: Naturally Beautiful.”

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant seeking applications The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant applications and tickets will be available beginning Monday, Feb. 13, at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, located at 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline to submit the application and a $68 application fee is Monday, Mar. 12, by 5 p.m. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1, or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30mile radius of Stark County.

While not mandatory, all potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the fourth annual “Screen the Queen Pageant” session, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Canton Regional Chamber from 9 to 11 a.m. This session will help young ladies decide if they would like to enter the Pageant, and give them a better idea of what to expect if they do.

Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2011 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process. This informative, informal session is FREE, but reservations must be made in advance by calling Kathy Lindenberger at (330) 458-2056.

The number of court members selected will coincide with the number of members of the 2012 Class of Enshrinees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Queen and her court will serve as role models and goodwill ambassadors throughout the community, and one of their most memorable experiences will be their ride on a float in the Timken Grand Parade.

Kara Abbott has been named chair of the 2012 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Committee. An 11-year committee member, this is her second year in this leadership role. As the 1995 Enshrinement Festival Queen, she has a unique perspective on the process and the qualifications necessary to attain the crown. Assisting her with leadership responsibilities will be Crystal McLendon, committee vice chair.

A Canton native, Abbott is a graduate of Central Catholic High School and Kent State University. In addition to her service on the Queen Committee, she volunteered for 10 years on the Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks Committee, and has modeled in the Enshrinement Festival Fashion Show for the past six years. Her community activities include past service as a United Way coordinator, and current service at St. Mary’s School in Massillon as coordinator of the Spirit Window, and member of the PTO and the Auction Committee. She and husband Steve are the proud parents of five children.

The Queen Committee is responsible for working with Enshrinement Festival staff in coordinating all activities relating to the Enshrinement Festival Queen and court and serving as chaperones during their community service activities and official event appearances.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County 26th Signature Program - APPLY NOW TO THE SIGNATURE PROGRAM! The Signature Program is an in-depth examination of Stark County’s assets and challenges, along with an introduction to effecting community change.

The Signature Program is ideal for business and community leaders. Each year, selected participants enhance their leadership skills and gain an understanding of local issues, assets and resources.

Your leadership experience begins with an intense, two-day Opening Retreat in September that will provide you with an in-depth personal leadership assessment and dynamic workshops. From there, you’ll meet once per month to expand your capacity for leadership and service in our community.

Your Signature experience includes: • Exploring the cultural, economic, and historic features of Stark County on a wide-ranging bus tour.

• Delving into economic development with on-site tours and small-group interaction with area CEOs. •Taking a jail tour, meeting with local judges and investigating the justice system on a cruiser ride with sheriff’s deputies and police.

• Examining social and economic issues through panel discussions with political and civic leaders.

Applications are due by Apr. 27. Signature Program tuition is $2,350, and tuition assistance is available for applicants from non-profit or government organizations.

Selection is competitive and based on the written application, group interview, and Leadership Stark County’s goal to create a class that is representative of the professional, cultural, racial, economic, geographic and ethnic diversity of the community.

STARK COUNT Y SAFET Y COUNCIL Fatigue and Sleepiness in the Workplace - FEBRUARY STARK COUNTY SAFETY COUNCIL LUNCHEON Employees falling asleep on the job?

At the February Stark County Safety Council Luncheon on Feb. 9, Dr. Alan Rudick D.O. will explain the impact of fatigue in the workplace.

From loss of productivity, to the hazards that accompany fatigue and sleepiness while at work, Dr. Rudick will share counter-measures you can employ in your workplace to keep your employees wide-eyed and up for the task of on the job alertness.

Dr. Rudick will also share information about common sleep-related disorders, such as periodic limb movement, restless leg syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea that can affect many employees. Plus, he’ll provide an overview of the services available through Mercy’s Sleep Center.

Dr. Rudick has been in practice in Stark County as a pulmonary critical care physician since 1989. He is currently affiliated with Pulmonary and Critical Care Physicians, Inc. and is medical director of Mercy Medical Center’s accredited sleep center.

He has practiced at the US Navy Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., where he was chief of internal medicine. Dr. Rudick received his doctorate of osteopathy from the College of Osteopathic

Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was the recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Preceptor from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Clinical Preceptor of the Year from Doctors Hospital in Stark County, Teacher of the Year from the Naval Hospital of Florida, and was Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy.

As a young professional new to the Canton community, I find the initiative to be an excellent way to network with other young professionals, build relationships with local community leaders, get involved, and give something back to the community, which has been very welcoming to an outsider.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.?

Before moving to Canton, I have never experienced a more cohesive, well supported and impressive young professionals organization, especially not one with such a deep and involved membership base. The buy-in ystark! receives from local businesses and leaders is testament to how well the organization is run. The events that ystark! hosts are always relevant, fun, informational and well attended. I particularly enjoy the monthly meet-ups.

Where did you grow up?

In what cities have you lived and worked?

I grew up in Canfield, Ohio, went to undergrad at The Ohio State University in Columbus, got my law and business degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and then moved to Canton to begin my career at Black McCuskey.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

I found an excellent career opportunity in Canton, ystark! made getting involved in the community fun and easy, and the low cost of living is a plus.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

The community is very inviting and has made calling Canton my new home an easy transition.

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

Despite the progressive initiatives of ystark! and other community organizations, the business climate still continues to present a number of challenges. However, these challenges also present an opportunity to overcome.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I would like to see more entertainment and nightlife options in concentrated areas within walking distance from each other, like many of the bigger markets have. I think a concentration of “things to do,” would, in turn, attract more YPs to the area.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton?

There are so many great food options in Canton! I am usually checking out a new restaurant or enjoying the company of the many new friends I’ve met in the area.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton?

Canton has already quickly become my home. So long as the community continues to be progressive and supportive of business development, it would be an easy sell for me to spend a lifetime here.

YSTARK! Canton Entrepreneur Launch program awards $50,000

The City of Canton, in conjunction with ystark! (a department of the Canton Regional Chamber) has awarded a $50,000 business grant to Jack Hooks in the first funding cycle of the Canton Entrepreneur Launch program.

The new program, conceived and launched last year with help from JumpStart Inc., provides grants to entrepreneurs who plan to locate new, high growth business ventures in the City of Canton. More than 60 applications were received for the very competitive inaugural funding cycle, and four finalists were invited to a formal presentation. After careful consideration and review by the Canton Entrepreneur Launch commission, entrepreneur Karl Beitzel’s company, Jack Hooks, was selected for grant funding.

Canton Entrepreneur Launch is designed to create organic business growth by providing grants to start-up businesses that have the potential to attract additional growth capital, create substantial economic impact and develop job opportunities within the Canton community.

“We were thrilled to receive so much interest and to see such a healthy entrepreneurial spark in our region,” said Mayor William J. Healy II. “This year we wanted to make a significant investment that could take a business to the next level.

We believe that Jack Hooks can use this money to make great progress in their venture.”

Jack Hooks manufactures a revolutionary series of fishing hooks for the retail consumer market that, according to Beitzel, are “are the strongest, fastest and sharpest hooks ever made.” Jack Hooks’ proprietary, patent-pending, knotless hook allows professional and recreational anglers alike to attach a hook to their line in fewer than five seconds.

The young company is already generating a buzz in the industry. The California Dreamin’ Series hooks were designed in collaboration with a veteran tournament angler, Marc Beyers of Norco, Calif., to meet the high demands of professional anglers in tournament competition.

BassMaster’s Elite Series Professional Angler Keith Poche has signed a one-year endorsement agreement with Jack Hooks and will use the Jack Hooks California Dreamin’ Series in the Bassmaster Classic tournament, held in Louisiana from Feb. 24 through 26, when he competes head to head with the world’s best Pro Anglers for the 2012 Season Championship.

Jack Hooks is now in the process of establishing a North American sales distribution network. Operations and production will be located in Canton.

“This is my hometown and I am committed to creating jobs and value in the local economy,” said Beitzel. “Growing new industry helps to keep a community healthy, and I hope Jack Hooks will contribute to that trend.”

The company plans to use the Canton Entrepreneur Launch grant to support an assembly operation in Canton, develop additional product inventory, and obtain basic marketing support to build up its operations until they are capable of perpetuating self-sustainable sales.

Starting modestly with a handful of staffers, the company hopes to grow to 75 average-wage employees over the next five years.

Those companies who did not receive funding in this application cycle will have access to additional assistance. “We are partnering with Victor Pavona and the Stark County Business Development Center (SBDC) to ensure that all applicants receive necessary business support and advisory services,” said Derek Gordon, assistant safety/service director for the City of Canton. “The SBDC will continue to remain an active partner as we move forward, supporting the program by providing needed connections and continued counseling, not only to Jack Hooks, but to other applicants of the Canton Entrepreneur Launch program.”

The Canton Entrepreneur Launch program will begin a second round of funding later this year, and details about the next round of funding will be available online at CantonLaunch.org.

All applicants also have access to the Canton Entrepreneur Launch’s partner, the JumpStart Entrepreneurial Network, a connected group of regional entrepreneur support organizations offering space, capital and connections to entrepreneurs across 21 counties of Northeast Ohio.

The Canton Museum of Art has announced the appointment of Christine Fowler Shearer to the new, full-time position of development director. Shearer will be responsible for the Museum’s advancement efforts, including initiating fund raising efforts, writing grants and developing corporate and foundation partnerships. Shearer is well known in the regional cultural community, having served as executive director of the Massillon Museum from 2003 through 2010. Prior to 2003, Shearer served as the first full-time executive director of the Cleveland Artists Foundation, and as an independent consultant with Fowler Artistic Resources -- providing support services for artists, collectors and nonprofit organizations.

Shearer has curated a number of exhibitions.

Active in many community organizations, Shearer is the vice-president of the board of Soroptimist International of Canton/Stark County, past-president of the board of trustees of the Ohio Museums Association, and an advisory board member of the Massillon Salvation Army.
