George W. Lemon appointed board chairman of the Canton Regional Chamber for 2011 As I begin my term as chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber, we have George Lemon already developed a strategic list of goals and objectives that we believe the Chamber can achieve or pursue in 2011. Below you will find a summarized list of some of these crucial tasks that the board, executive management team, the staff of the Chamber and our dedicated volunteers

will be working to bring to fruition this year: Education. We want to continue to partner with local educators and education advocates with the hope of attaining for Stark County the “employeeready” student at graduation.

Economic Development. We plan to work more closely with the City of Canton, Stark Development Board and others to improve economic conditions and business development in Stark County, especially as it relates to Mills Business Park, center city developments and other area developments.

Regionalism. We have begun collaborations with other regional chambers in Stark County to improve economic conditions in our region, and will strive for even closer collaboration in the future.

Workforce Development. We will work to grow the number of engaged young professionals in Stark County through our ystark! initiative, as well as grow the board shadowing program for YPs through Leadership Stark County.

Membership. In 2011, we want to grow our membership to top the current 1,550 members of the Canton Regional Chamber. (continued on page two)

Ohio Governor John R. Kasich to speak at the Canton Regional Chamber’s 97th Annual Dinner The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce will welcome new Ohio Governor John R. Kasich to the 97th annual dinner, held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

Governor Kasich will talk about new steps he will take to encourage business growth and employment for Ohio.

“Ohio faces a bigger governmental crisis than any time in recent memory and this John R. Kasich community will benefit from anything we can learn about how Governor Kasich will lead us out of an $8 billion deficit,” said Dennis P. Saunier, Chamber president and CEO. “This also is an excellent opportunity to get the Governor close to some of the projects in Stark County.”

Entrepreneurship. We will promote and support ongoing entrepreneurship and development efforts in the county through programs and likeminded organizations.

Government Affairs. We will assist where possible to affect more collaboration in local government and continue to help with Redesigning Ohio, the state government reform plan by developed by the eight metro chambers and the Ohio Chamber.

Tourism. We will continue to focus our efforts on bringing visitors to our region through concerted marketing efforts of greater Stark County, as well as through hosting one of a kind events like the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, which brings an estimated 700,000 people to our community each year.

I congratulate Tom Cecconi for an outstanding year of new developments and events and for his dedication as board

chairman in 2011. Together with the staff and the board of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Tom rose to the task of serving the business community of Stark County in new and different ways, and we are stronger for it.

I look forward to this year and to working with the talented staff and board of the Chamber to continue to strengthen the wellbeing of businesses large and small in Canton/Stark County, and to help the region to invite economic growth. Working with Chamber President and CEO Dennis Saunier and his staff will be a rewarding experience and I look forward to serving the membership as Chairman this year.

Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant applications available and ‘Screen the Queen Pageant’ scheduled for Feb. 26 The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant applications and tickets will be available beginning Monday, Feb. 14, at the Canton Regional Chamber Kara Abbott of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline to submit the application and $68 fee is Monday, March 14, by 5 p.m. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1, or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County.

While not mandatory, all potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the third annual “Screen the Queen Pageant” session, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce from 9 to 11:30 a.m. This session will help young ladies decide if they would like to enter the Pageant, and will give them a better idea of what to expect if they do.

Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2010 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories and ask questions about the process. This informative, informal session is FREE, but reservations must be made in advance by calling Tonya Stuck, event manager, at (330) 458-2052.

Longtime committee member and past Enshrinement Festival Queen to lead Queen Pageant committee Kara Abbott has been named chair of the 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Committee. A 10-year committee member, this is her first year in this leadership role, serving as vice chair for the past two years. As the 1995 Enshrinement Festival Queen, she has a unique perspective on the process and qualifications necessary to attain the crown.

She and husband Steve are the proud parents of four children, and are expecting a fifth in June.

The Queen Committee is responsible for working with Enshrinement Festival staff in coordinating all activities relating to the Enshrinement Festival Queen and court, and serving as chaperones during their community service activities and official event appearances.

BLUES IN SCHOOLS program seeking student musicians for fourth year The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it will again provide the “Blues in Schools” program and is seeking a select group of Stark County middle and high school musicians. The Blues in Schools program is a blues education and performance program offered in conjunction with the annual Canton Blues Festival, and has become the premier Blues education program in Ohio. The Chamber is actively seeking students interested in participating in this exciting musical opportunity. Applications are due by Feb. 18.

The 14-week Blues in Schools program, to be held in the Lower Level Lounge at Kent State University at Stark, will begin on Saturday, March 5, at 10 a.m. Ample free parking is available adjacent to the facility. The week-

About Keynote Speaker Governor John R. Kasich Ohio Governor John Kasich’s top priority is to create jobs and revive Ohio’s economy.

Kasich was sworn in as Ohio’s 69th governor on January, 10, 2011. In his inaugural address he called on Ohioans to come together to make the Buckeye State stronger and more prosperous for all.

PUCO & You: What the new rules mean for your business: FEBRUARY STARK COUNTY SAFETY COUNCIL LUNCHEON The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has adopted new regulations affecting businesses that use vehicles with a gross vehicle weight ratings of 10,001 to 26,000 Michael Lattavo pounds to transport property or passengers in Ohio.

Attendees will leave with critical information about preparing for these changes and complying with PUCO.

I have always worked in the food service and hospitality industries, and starting my own business was a natural progression. I love people, I love cities and so opening Picciano’s in downtown Canton simply could not have been a better fit.

Why is having a strong YP community important for your business?

Having a strong young professional community isn’t just good for the good of my business, but for the future of business everywhere. A strong YP workforce and, more importantly, life-force, is critical for developing our community, not just our business climate.

What are your thoughts on ystark!? ystark! does what no other organization in our region can. They have so much to offer YPs, from networking to professional development. And I’ve only ever met wonderful people when I attend events and programs. They have accomplished so much so far, and grown so fast, that I can’t wait to see where the organization has headed next!

What’s next for you?

I’m now a wonderful mother of three, with Mea (10 years), Gino (three years) and new baby Taliana (12 weeks!), so I’m a busy girl. My immediate plans are to continue to help my husband, David “Duke”Tozzi to run his family restaurant, Tozzi’s of Magnolia. As for the lounge, Picciano’s is going to begin to offer sushi in the evenings, Tuesday through Saturday. We are also going to start up our guest bartending events every Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. All of the tips from the guest bartending events go to the bartenders’ charity of choice. This is a wonderful networking tool, with lots of different people turning out to support organizations and non-profits. Last year we raised $11,000 in tips for charity and First Friday donations. In the more distant future, I have an interest in other downtown developments, including residential accommodations and opening another restaurant somewhere in Canton!

What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started?

Always, always cover all of your bases and keep working hard. I believe it’s critical to have many irons in the fire,

Which attributes best define you as an entrepreneur? Hard working, understanding and very, very personable. I think you have to be those three things in my line of work!

Why have you chosen Canton as your home base? I’m from Cleveland, and moving to Magnolia to help my husband run his restaurant, Tozzi’s of Magnolia, has been wonderful, but I’ve missed the urban city life. Canton is the nearest “big city,” especially compared to Magnolia, and it’s a city of great unity and a bright future.
