Third quarter Oil and Gas update from the Canton Regional Chamber The energy business remains brisk at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. We now have two business development seminars under our belts. We are moving forward with a marketing plan to bring more energy businesses to Stark County and Greater Canton. We are continuing to work with companies that want to build oil and gas service facilities in Canton, and we are meeting new companies that want to be Chamber members and participate in the growing oil and gas economy. Meanwhile, companies that already have chosen Stark County as their home in the Utica Shale are making news: Chesapeake Energy has found its permanent home in the Utica, a nearly 300-acre tract known as the Beck Industrial Park in western Louisville, only a couple of miles east of Canton. There, Chesapeake will build a campus of buildings and facilities. Baker Hughes, the worldwide oil services company, which previously announced an enormous facility in Massillon, is on its way

in preparing for operations in the Utica. Mark Morris, operations director for Baker Hughes in Canonsburg, Pa., outlined plans for Massillon when he delivered the luncheon address at the Chamber’s second Oil and Gas Business Development Seminar on June 15. Baker Hughes expects to have temporary facilities ready by around Oct. 1 and construction of permanent facilities around the end of the year. It will operate four to six fleets of 30 trucks each from Massillon. Those fleets will be involved in the hydraulic stimulation of the horizontal wells being drilled by the oil and gas exploration companies in the Utica. Stark County’s industrial leader, The Timken Co., has committed $225 million as its investment in the Utica. That is the cost of expansion of the Faircrest steel mill, so that it is more capable of meeting the demand for drill bits and other tools for the oil and gas industry that require specialty steel. The demand for truck drivers will be great, and the employment plans at the Baker Hughes facility in Massillon provides but one example. (continued next page)
