VINTAGE CANTON: A Grape Evening Downtown The Canton Development Partnership, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber, will host its annual Vintage Canton event on Wednesday, September 10, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. along Central Plaza North in downtown Canton.

Vintage Canton is a sophisticated downtown gathering, offering distinctive center city charm alongside live music, vibrant art exhibits and, of course, quality local wine and beer from around the world and Ohio.

The event gives guests the chance to relax and unwind while enjoying wine from local wineries, delicacies from downtown and greater Canton eateries and memorable live music. This year Vintage Canton will continue to bring the very best wines and will offer quality craft beers in the Beer Garden.

This year’s Vintage Canton gathering will feature some of the finest quality wines from area wineries and abroad, including Barrel Run Winery, Breitenbach Wine Cellars, Easley Winery, Gervasi Vineyard, and Raven’s Glenn Winery, along with selections from distributors and retailers, including, Grapes in a Glass, Heidelberg Distributing, Leo A. Dick Distributors and Natural State Wines, Inc. Craft beers from Heidelberg Distributing will also be available in lieu of the eight wine samples included with event admission.

Guests will also be able to enjoy small tasting plates for a nominal charge from downtown restaurants and Stark County favorites, including Bender’s Tavern, Canal Tavern of Zoar, The Canton Club, Chocolates by Erin, Desert Inn Restaurant, George’s Restaurant, Peace Love and Little Donuts, Tapas 218 and Thorpe’s Market Avenue Grill & Pub. Chamber seeks nominations for the 2014 Community Salute Awards Each year, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce recognizes the area’s unsung heroes at the Community Salute Awards by honoring select individuals, corporations, businesses and organizations for outstanding contributions to the greater Canton community.

This year’s awards dinner will take place Wednesday, Nov. 5, at The University Center at Kent State at Stark.

OIL & GAS Oil and Gas | September Update We and our partners are pleased to have American Energy Partners as a gold sponsor for Utica Summit II on Oct. 14. If you watch the oil and gas industry, you will recognize this name. It is the company formed in April 2013 by the former cofounder and CEO of Chesapeake Energy, Aubrey McClendon. American Energy Partners is headquartered in Oklahoma City. Its center of Utica operations is Cambridge, Ohio, about 60 miles straight down Interstate 77 from Canton.

When McClendon headed Chesapeake, his company secured a vast number of lease in Carroll and Harrison counties, and he established Chesapeake’s Ohio headquarters in Canton. Those headquarters have moved to the Chesapeake building in nearby Louisville.

When McClendon came back to Ohio for a second investment in the Utica Shale, he headed farther south to acquire acreage for exploration. In fact, many exploration and production companies have moved into southern Utica counties such as Guernsey, Noble, Belmont and Monroe.

Those counties are the yielding some of the high producing wells.

As you will see elsewhere in this issue, Utica Summit II will be Tuesday, Oct. 14, on the campus of Kent State University at Stark. It is a one-day conference on the future of Utica exploration and the uses of Utica energy in manufacturing and transportation. As for Chesapeake Energy, the exploration company that made Canton a center for Utica exploration appears to be doing just fine. Shane Hoover of The Repository reported that Chesapeake oil and gas production in the second quarter of the year rose 373 percent over the same time period last year, and 34 percent over the previous quarter. Chesapeake still leads all exploration and production companies in the Utica with wells drilled and wells producing.

Ohio recently reached a milestone by exceeding 1,000 horizontal wells drilled in the Utica. The number as of mid-August was 1,025, with 547 of those wells in production.

The Utica is one of the fastest growing gas-producing regions in the United States, according to a recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The EIA noted that the Utica was producing 155 million cubic feet per day in January 2012. At this time, the output is 1.3 billion cubic feet per day. CONVENTION & VISITORS’ BUREAU Stark County’s Travel & Tourism Impact Rises to 1.6 Billion Dollars Tourism is on the rise in the Stark County area and that bodes well for the local economy, according to new research released by the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau.

The tourism industry’s impact in the county neared $1.6 billion in 2013, growing to a new high for the region. This is according to an integrated consumerbased research study organized by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of TourismOhio and conducted by Longwoods International and Tourism Economics.

“Tourism continues to be a driving component of the Stark County economy”, according to Allyson Bussey, Assistant Director of the Convention & Visitors’ Bureau.

The total effect of the Travel & Tourism in Stark County has increased 56% percent since 2011, which is attributed to many facets including the influx of traffic from the Oil & Gas industry, the expansion and renovation of many attractions including the Pro Football Hall of Fame 50th Anniversary project, as well as an increase in visitation from the meeting, sports and leisure markets to the region.

“The impact of travel & tourism in Stark County continues to grow with new experiences like several breweries coming online, the continuing growth of the arts, as well as future plans for several key attractions in the region. Tourism is not always top of mind as an economic driver, I think within the next five years that will be very different.” she concludes.

That growth has become increasingly vital to the county’s economics, directly translating into more jobs and a better quality of life for county residents. Tourism in 2013 sustained 7.5% percent of salaried employment in Stark County, supported 13,823 local jobs, accounted for 1 in 13 jobs in the county and $280.5 million in wages, according to the report. The top areas for tourism employment include food and beverage sector, recreation, retail trade, transportation and lodging.

The industry contributed more than $35.6 million in local taxes, Out of Ohio’s 88 counties, Stark County is one of 16 that figures into the top quintile for tourism impact. Without the state and local taxes generated by tourism, each Ohio household would need to pay an additional $650 per year to fill the gap, according to the Convention & Visitors’ Bureau.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership’s 28th Signature Class Selected The 28th Class of Leadership Stark County’s Signature program has been selected and will begin their ten-month exploration of Stark County’s current issues, assets, and local and regional resources. The group begins with two-day retreat and a oneday traveling investigation of Stark County then spends a full day each month on some aspect of the community including economics, social services, government, education and justice, among others. A hands-on project designed to develop community assets completes the experience. These community minded individuals have been charged to work together to make a lifelong commitment to Stark County. YSTARK! Ready, Set, RIDDLE! ystark!’s PerplexCity is back and more perplexing than ever ystark!, the Canton Regional Chamber’s young professional initiative, is back with round five of the perplexing puzzle game that takes Stark County by storm.

The game will be held in downtown and BEYOND on Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at 10 a.m.

Remember: your team must hurry to each clue! You’ll be competing against 20 or so other teams, all racing you to the finish.

The winning team will be the first one to solve ALL of the clues and make it to the end of the game, where they will be lavishly celebrated!

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

Even though I do not live in Canton, I’ve worked here for over a dozen years and spend a lot of time in the Canton community.

Name: Seth Turner, CVA Age: 32 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Supervisor at Hall, Kistler and Company, LLP Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? It’s an excellent opportunity to interact with area YPs from many diverse backgrounds. We’re shaping Canton and it’s important we interact with one another as we come up.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I’ve formed wonderful, lasting professional and personal relationships with many YPs who I’ve met through the various ystark! events and committees. These are passionate and driven people with clear visions for their careers and their community.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I was raised and currently reside in Alliance, Ohio. I’ve worked in Canton and Alliance.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I own a single family home in Alliance with my wife and two children. I think the Onesto opening later this year offers an exciting opportunity for YPs in the downtown area, and I hope to see more spaces like that. I think housing is affordable in Canton and Stark County in general.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

The people! There are very intelligent, passionate and committed people in this community.

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

Motorcycle season isn’t long enough!

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? There is a lot of opportunity throughout the area.

There are manufacturing, oil & gas, retail, service, non-profits and a whole host of other businesses in the area with a need for a quality workforce. The arts district downtown has provided an excellent outlet for artists. Opportunities exist through Leadership Stark County, Spotlight, ystark! and countless volunteer organizations to become involved in our community. There are great opportunities to continue education or learn a new field of study at Stark State, Kent State, Walsh, Malone and Mt. Union.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I’ve always been a fan of local music, so seeing bands at Buzzbin or George’s Lounge is a good way to relax with friends. We are starting to bike as a family, so we’ll be checking into the towpaths and parks in the area.

What would you change about Canton if you could? It’d be great to see something similar to the Cleveland’s West Side Market in the Canton area.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I can, as long as the jobs and opportunities remain.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I’m not sure any one event would be cause to leave. I’ve been to Chicago a few times and really enjoyed my time there. A coastal town in the Carolinas might be nice, but that’s what vacations are for.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I would like to see more forward looking jobs and business in the area, such as efficient energy, technology, pharmaceutical, etc. I respect Canton’s heritage, but look forward to how we can continue to grow as a community.

NFPA 70E is the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, established by the National Fire Protection Agency. It is designed to help workers avoid injury from a release of electrical energy, and prevent or minimize exposure to all widely recognized electrical hazards. The NFPA 70E is updated every three years. It is currently being updated for 2015.

This course covers the expected changes to the 2015 edition, and is designed be used as a planning tool for preparing your electrical safety program.

BIZ BITZ The Canton Museum of Art will host the Midwest premiere of a provocative new exhibit about art fraud and deception. “Intent to Deceive: Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World” will open to the public on August 28 at the Museum, and the exhibit will be on view through October 26, 2014. View original masterpieces by Picasso, Matisse and others alongside ingenious fakes that defied experts.

In addition, the Canton Museum of Art is proud to present Dante’s Inferno: The Illustrations of Amos Nattini, a new exhibition organized by the Museum, which will be displayed for the first time in the Atrium Gallery of the Birk Center for the Arts, at Walsh University, from August 25 to December 1, 2014. The exhibition is free and open to the public, daily 8 am - 9 pm. This special exhibit marks the first collection in the Museum’s history to be displayed in a partnering gallery.

The Aultman Cancer Center recently received accreditations from the Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the Aultman Cancer Center. To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patientcentered care. Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation is only awarded to a facility that exceeds standard requirements at the time of its triennial survey. In addition to the CoC accolades, the Aultman Breast Care Center received a three-year/full accreditation designation by the NAPBC. A program administered by the American College of Surgeons, NAPBC accreditation is given to a facility that has voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of breast care and undergoes a rigorous evaluation process and review of its performance.

The Young Entrepreneurs Consortium, a group of 12 school districts, three career and technical centers, three higher education institutions, and 11 business/community partners received one of 37 state grants from A Fund competition. The Consortium will lead a multi-year initiative to create an innovative the Ohio Department of Education’s Straight model for community engagement and

increasing the flow of young entrepreneurs in Ohio. The $13.6 million grant, approved by the Ohio Controlling Board, will enable the Young Entrepreneurs Consortium to reach 26,549 students in an 11-county service area including: Carroll, Guernsey, Holmes, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas, Washington, and Wayne.

Canton Community Clinic announced a name change. The organization will now be known as Lifecare Family Health & Dental Center. “Our new name is a symbol of the new way we are working together to improve the health of the Stark County community,” said Dr. David Cola, Lifecare‘s Medical Director. “The name change is part of our overall mission of providing comprehensive healthcare to each and every individual served at our two healthcare centers at 2725 Lincoln Street East and 408 Ninth St SW, on the Goodwill Campus.”

Walsh University President Richard Jusseaume is pleased to announce the establishment of the University’s third comprehensive school with the formation of the new School of Arts and Sciences. The School of Arts and Sciences will house the divisions of Humanities, Language and Letters, Mathematics and Sciences, and Philosophy and Theology, which together will offer more than 24 majors.
