VIP Tickets On Sale Now for Canton Blues Fest on June 20 & 21 Northeast Ohio’s premier free blues festival, Canton Blues Fest, will be rocking Market Square in downtown Canton for the 13th straight year on June 20 and 21! VIP tickets are on sale now, giving blues enthusiasts up-close access and fantastic FREE food and drinks.

The theme for the 2014 festival is “Women in Blues,” and this year’s headliners are none other than two leading ladies of Blues Ana Popovic on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and Shemekia Copeland on Saturday at 8:30 p.m., along with music each day from noon to 10:30 p.m. From deep blues (Shemekia) to blues-rockin’ guitar (Ana), these women are two of the most talented and respected names in the Blues music genre.

Oil and Gas June Update: Register for Midstream Ohio 2014 The oil and gas business is nothing new for some Stark County businesses. For instance, there’s Joe Halter’s Solmet Technologies, an open-die forging plant and metallurgical testing facility that has been making high-strength oil and gas drilling tools since the early 1990s.

Solmet has achieved American Petroleum Institute’s Q1 quality rating for overall process, and is awaiting API certification for threading so the parts can be screwed into other API-threaded components. This will add to Solmet’s ability to finish products for customer’s applications.

One of Solmet’s specialties is the creation of drill mandrels. Using a particularly highstrength steel developed by The Timken Co. called HS220-27, and manufactured at Timken’s Faircrest steel plant, Solmet heats the steel to 2,350 degrees Fahrenheit and then uses its enormous forging hammers to pound the steel into shapes that can accommodate a drill bit on one end and a drilling motor on the other.

Open-die forging is an old business, and oil and gas tooling is a new application for that old business. The forging hammers used at Solmet were originally built in 1890, 1930 and 1950. If you see them in action, you know they’re up to the task.

Ask Joe Halter or his son Matt whether these tools are being used in Utica Shale horizontal drilling, and either one is likely to say, “We don’t know. We suppose so.” You see, they create these tools for oil and gas service companies such as Baker Hughes and Schlumberger, which have the parts machined further into usable down-hole drill components.

These components could be put to work on other continents, under the ocean floor or at any one of several domestic oil and gas drilling sites, including Ohio’s Utica Shale.

Solmet’s ties to the oil and gas industry are deep. Many of their products are shipped to Houston, Texas, or Lafayette, La., where Solmet parts are used to manufacture drill components. In fact, in Lafayette, Solmet’s forgings are so popular that Timken’s HS220-27 is known informally as “Solmet steel.”

It’s remarkable to see Solmet’s technicians shape this steel with its hammers. The heated steel bar is clamped into the jaws of a forklift. The forklift driver manipulates the piece as the hammer operator beats it into shape.

CONVENTION & VISITORS’ BUREAU New Hospitality Training Program Created to Educate Front-Line Staff on Importance of Travel and Tourism in Stark County Travel and tourism in Stark County is big business, in fact it provides thousands of jobs and positively impacts our community. According to research by Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company, travel and tourism in Stark County has an economic impact of a over a billion dollars per year.

With the importance of a healthy travel and tourism industry, the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau is unveiling a new hospitality program created exclusively for front-line staff.

This program is called the Stark Tourism Ambassador Recognition Program (STAR) Program. The goal of the program is to nurture and cultivate a culture of

enthusiastic, well versed front-line staff members at hotels, attractions and restaurants.

“This group of professionals is so important to the vitality of the travel and tourism industry, as they are often the first and only interaction that a guest may have when exploring Stark County,” said Allyson Bussey, The CVB’s Assistant Director. “These employees are the ambassadors for our industry, and we need to provide them the knowledge to showcase our community.”

The Canton/Stark County CVB launches new interactive touch-screen tourist information kiosks throughout Stark County The Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau (CVB) has announced the creation of an interactive touchscreen tourism information kiosk system for Stark County. This investment of 13 ExploreBoard units are meant to help educate and entice travelers in-market to explore more destinations while visiting the region.

These kiosks are a sleek, high-tech and interactive way for visitors to look up information on restaurants, hotels, attractions and more. The locations of these kiosks will be at major foot traffic centers throughout the community like the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton Memorial Civic Center, Belden Village Mall, Hartville MarketPlace as well as several hotels throughout Stark County.

Allyson Bussey, Assistant Director for the CVB, said, “We felt that it was necessary to create multiple places throughout the region to offer increased interaction with visitors. These ExploreBoard kiosks are the perfect way to fulfill this need with cutting edge information distribution. Features include mapping technology and the ability to send information to smartphones, tablets, etc. It will change the way we move visitors throughout the community.”

The goal of this project is to increase the amount of time that the visitor spends in the market, which will increase visitor spending, create more overnight travel in our region, and create a more informed visitor. This investment will also foster the economic health of travel and tourism in the region.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Mariah Curtis reigns as 2014 Enshrinement Festival Queen, Seven Court Members Announced Mariah Curtis, 22, of Canton, Ohio, was crowned the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen from a field of 48 contestants. The 2014 Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant was held Thursday, May 8, at The Canton Palace Theatre in downtown Canton. Contestants were judged on the basis of personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community.

Judges for the event included Leslie Iams Kuntz, Director, Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co., LPA; George Lemon, 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival General Vice Chairman; Emily Menyes, Independent Hospital Network Coordinator, Aultman Health Foundation; and Kevin Smith, President and Owner, PPI Graphics & Innovative Trends.

Mariah is the daughter of Dadisi and Claudia Curtis, graduated from McKinley High School and is attending the University of Dayton. Seven Court members also were selected, to coincide with the number in the Class of 2014 Enshrinees. The 2014 Court members include:

Miles, director, programs, communications & community for Employers Health, has served on the Drum Corps committee for six years, with this his second as chairman. A graduate of Lakeland High School, he obtained both his undergrad degree and his masters from Malone University. He is immediate past chairman of Access Health Stark County, co-chair of United Way Impact Council, and member of the board of directors of Goodwill Industries. The 2014 DCI Tour of Champions, presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival and Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps will be held on Monday, August 4th at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon, just one week away from the international championships in Indianapolis.

The Tour of Champions event series is a new format this year, consisting of

exciting live entertainment featuring the following top world class corps: Bluecoats (Canton, OH); Carolina Crown (Ft. Mill, SC); The Cadets (Allentown, PA); Santa Clara Vanguard (Santa Clara, CA); Phantom Regiment (Rockford, IL); Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA); and Crossmen (San Antonio, TX). Spectators will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the drum corps experience with exclusive fan-member interaction, preshow and intermission entertainment and more!

Vero has been a member of the Transportation Committee since 1999, and this is his first year as chairman. He is a graduate of Rome (New York) Free Academy and received a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and a master’s degree from University of Akron. The father of three, his life’s work has been devoted to education at the elementary school level. He is in his 37th year as an educator, having served 36 of them in public education with the Fairless and Canton City Schools, and he currently serves as principal of Holy Cross Academy, Saint Joan of Arc School.

The committee is responsible for security at the events sponsored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including a Thursday night reception, Friday night reception following the Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner, Sunday Brunch, Enshrinement ceremony, NFL/Hall of Fame Game and Tailgate reception, Hall of Fame autograph sessions and other Hall of Fame private events. As chairman, Stover and his vice chairmen, Joel Chenevey and Jim Dehnke, will work closely with the Canton Police, Jackson Township Police, Stark County Sheriff’s Deputies, State Highway Patrol, and other Hall of Fame committees.

The Transportation Committee is responsible for providing transportation for the Enshrinees, presenters and other special guests. Many of the Hall’s guests will arrive on the Thursday preceding the Enshrinement, and will not leave until after the NFL Hall of Fame Game.

The massive details of providing transportation will be addressed by a team effort led by Vero and his vice chairmen Joe Andoloro, Greg Evans, Jim Evans, and Rick Evans.

Stover is the Capital Portfolio Manager for Ohio Edison/Penn Power, and this will be his 34th year serving on the Hall of Fame Security Committee. He was

Wyatt is a graduate of Lake High School and attended Kent State University.

She is owner/ operator of two Carpe Diem Coffee Shops and is President of the Palace Theatre Board. A Leadership Stark County graduate, she serves on the Stark Community Services Women’s Impact Board and the Canton Development Partnership Board of Architectural Review. She has been a member of the Pigskin Run committee for five years, and this is her first as chairman.

She and husband Patrick have one daughter and one son.

Vice chairman Susan Bodnar is assisting Wyatt and working closely with the committee to make some great adjustments to this year’s event.

The courses will be slightly revised and recertified in order to accommodate both the start and finish on the campus of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, providing fantastic photo opportunities.

Formerly known as the 2-Mile and 5-Mile Races, the Pigskin Run race distances will remain the same. Both serious and recreational runners are welcome to participate in the 2-Mile Run, 5-Mile Run, or 5-Mile Competitive Walk divisions.

Race day registration will be available, but at an increased cost, so participants are encouraged to register now and save at http://bitly.com/2014races. Cash and/ or other prizes will be awarded to top finishers in the three categories. Kids six and under are encouraged to participate

in the free Kids Fun Run which kicks off the morning’s festivities at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In celebration of the name change, a Pigskin Run “High School Pride Award” is being launched. When registering for the Pigskin Run, registrants will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the name of the high school they proudly support. The high school garnering the most support will receive a traveling award that they get to keep until the 2015 winner is declared.

King, of King Properties, is a graduate of Hoover High School and attended Kent State University.

After serving on the Concert and Fireworks committee for 10 years, this is his second as chairman. Very active in downtown development, he is the recipient of the ArtsinStark Turning Point Award for the Canton Arts District, and five Downtown Canton Special Improvement Awards for downtown developments. He is past chairman and current vice chairman of the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District and has served on numerous downtown and housing boards and committees. He is a founding member and past president of the Stark County Real Estate Investors Association as well as a member of the Lake Cable Recreation Association. He and wife Mary Ellen are parents to two daughters and two step-daughters.

King, vice chairman Jeff Burner, and their team will be attending to the many details involved with this event on the evening of Saturday, July 26. A variety of activities are planned at the Cornerstone Square area in the vicinity of Tuscarawas Street and Walnut Avenue and will begin at 6 p.m. with food and family fun, including face painting, balloon artists, costumed characters and crafts for the kids in the Chesapeake Energy Family

Fun Zone. Musical entertainment will include Jimmy and the Soul Blazers, and the festivities will conclude with an incredible pyrotechnic display launched from the Cornerstone Square parking deck approximately 10 p.m. – featuring the magic of Zambelli, “the First Family of Fireworks!”

Ruda, a sales associate for R. Z. Marketing Group, is serving his 14th year as chairman of the Enshrinement Ceremony Committee.

He previously served 18 years as a member of the committee, as well as three years as chairman of the former NFL Experience Committee. Ruda and his wife Gail are the proud parents of David and Danielle.

Ruda and his team of volunteers prepare the facilities and programming for staging, seating and logistics of the Enshrinement Ceremony program. Assisting him will be co-vice chairmen Terry Coyne for planning and Dave McRoberts for facilities. The Enshrinement Ceremony for the Class of 2014 football greats will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium.

The stellar Class of Enshrinees includes linebacker Derrick Brooks, punter Ray Guy, defensive end Claude Humphrey, tackle Walter Jones, wide receiver Andre Reed, defensive end Michael Strahan, and cornerback/safety Aeneas Williams.

Bannevich graduated from Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School and University of Mount Union and completed coursework at the Corporate University at Kent State University. She is currently marketing director at Belden Village Mall.

Following a reception guests will have exclusive afterhours access to the museum and view the Gold Jacket Ceremony via a broadcast.

New this year will be the Legends Club VIP Enshrinement Tailgate Party that will be on both Saturday and Sunday and will include four Pro Football Hall of Famers – the party of a lifetime for the game’s most elite fans to enjoy.

Also this year the traditional Fan Appreciation Parties will be again a great opportunity for football fans from all across the nation to get ready for The Enshrinement Ceremony and the big game featuring the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Giants. LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County Profile: Chris Kaboth of Whitacre Greer This month we profile Christopher Kaboth, VicePresident of Corporate Finance for Whitacre Greer, a small, boutique-type manufacturer of fired-clay paving brick and firebrick. Chris has participated in two different Leadership Stark County programs; the Spotlight program for young professionals in 2010 and the Signature program in 2012-2013.

Why did you decide participate in the Signature program?

I decided to participate in the program after the Spotlight course for young professionals. Spotlight was a great appetizer for the Signature course.

If I was going to live and work in the community then I wanted to make the community better and I knew that the Signature course was a way to be able to do that.

How has your experience in the Signature program affected your service and leadership roles in the community?

The program started my service in the community. If I didn’t enroll in the Signature course, I don’t know if I would be serving currently.

In your career, how have you used what you learned during the program?

Leadership Stark County really opened my eyes to what other people are doing in business and in the community and how my company can help with those ideas.

Provide an example of how your Signature Class training has transferred into your workplace?

We did an exercise, the TANF town poverty simulation, where you live as an underprivileged family in the community.

We have employees that would fall in this category and it gave me such a different perspective into what their day to day life is like.

Describe your leadership style:

What is your most significant memory from the Leadership program?

My most significant memory from the program is participating in the TANF town poverty simulation.

What would you say to someone considering applying to Leadership Stark County?

That the program will absolutely change your life, it will change how you look at Stark County and how it operates.

How have you remained involved in Leadership Stark County since your graduation?

I currently serve on the Alumni Committee for Leadership Stark County.

I like to lead by example. I also like to create a team atmosphere. I believe in letting people do their own work.

I’d much rather give you a problem, a deadline, and a budget and let you come up with a solution than having a hand in every step.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on?

I think future leaders should focus on how to delegate responsibly as well as learning that it doesn’t matter who gets the credit in the long run.

Name: Melissa Sliman Lombardi Age: 32 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Physical Therapist/ Aultman Health Foundation, Aultman Woodlawn Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I love Canton and anything I can do to make it a place young professionals want to live and work I will.

What we as YPs are doing today will create our future. I want to help make Canton a strong, safe, fun city. I have a family and would like my children to be able to enjoy this city, as I have growing up, and as an adult.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I think ystark! has done incredible things for Stark County. It has given YPs an opportunity to come together with a goal of making Stark County a better place. The networking that is done and the relationships it has formed have been a catalyst in the revitalization of Canton.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I was born and raised in Canton, Ohio and went to Canton Central Catholic for high school. I moved to Toledo, Ohio, for seven years for my undergraduate work and also graduate school. Then, lived and worked in Columbus

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

Canton is home. I love this city more than any other city; main reason is my family. I am the oldest of six children and most of my siblings live here, as do my parents, grandparents, and many other extended family. My husband and I have three children, and we love raising our family here. There are many things to do with our children, the cost of living is ideal, and we both work for great companies and love our jobs.

What type of dwelling do you live in?

What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I live in a house in Canton. There are many choices for YPs whether they are single, married, or have children there are many affordable homes, condos, and apartments. I think the increase in downtown living is great and will give YPs an opportunity to experience “downtown life.”

What do you like MOST about Canton?

Honestly, what I like most is that my family lives here. Next, would definitely be the community and the people in it. Over the past five years I have become more and more involved in the community and it has opened my eyes to the passion people have for this area. People’s passion, hard work, and kindness are what makes Canton great, and allows it to grow. I am always proud to say I live in the Pro Football Hall of Fame City!

ArtsinStark, to the numerous nonprofits in the area Canton provides a wide array of opportunity to learn and give back. I serve on the Executive Board of The Junior League of Stark County. With this organization I have had the opportunity to work organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Massillon, Turnaround Community Outreach, and Solid Rock Therapeutic Riding Center. In regards to careers, Canton is home to a variety of industries such as health care (Aultman, Mercy), higher education institutions (Walsh, Malone, Stark State), research and development (Timken, Diebold), and the arts.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I think Canton has made incredible progress here. The increase in downtown living and events, Arts District, and restaurant/bar scene downtown have all helped attract more YPs. We just need to continue on this path.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? Much of my time is spent running my children to their activities, games, and practices. I am also very involved in The Junior League of Stark County and have meetings and volunteer activities throughout the week with this group of women. I enjoy going out to eat, listening to live music, or grabbing a drink with my husband and friends. Some of our favorites are Gervasi, Jasmine Asian Bistro, Desert Inn, and Benders Tavern. We love to take the children to different parks as well as to many of the fun events downtown - First Friday, Taste of Canton, Blues Festival, or Light Up Downtown!

What would you change about Canton if you could? More places to take my childrenparks, green space, children’s museums, or water parks could be nice.

What do you like LEAST about Canton? It would be nice if we would get a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods in the area!

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? Yes. There is no doubt I will be in Canton my whole life. I love this place, it has always been home, and always will be.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? Canton has many community organizations to pick from depending on a person’s interests. From learning about the community with Leadership Stark County, to First Friday and

This rapidly growing problem claims 20 new users every hour. Many people are turning to heroin now that prescription drugs have become more difficult to obtain.

George Maier, Stark County Sheriff, and Lt. John Oliver, Agent in Charge, Stark County Metropolitan Narcotics Unit will discuss efforts to stop the flow of heroin into our community, the consequences for those caught selling or using heroin and the options available for individuals who are addicted.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Metropolitan Narcotics Unit is a task force whose mission is to identify, investigate and take enforcement action against illegal narcotic tracking and related criminal activity.

John Oliver has been employed by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for over 22 years, having been assigned to the operations division, which includes road patrol, investigating cases, and background checks for new hires. In 2005, he was assigned to be the Agent In Charge of the Metro Narcotics Unit. The unit works hand in hand with local and federal agencies, building drug cases that their unit prosecutes on the state and federal level.

BIZ BITZ The Canton Museum of Art is pleased to welcome a major ceramics exhibition, Waylande Gregory: Art Deco Ceramics and the Atomic Impulse, which will be on view through July 20, 2014, in the lower galleries. Waylande Gregory (American, 1905 -1971) was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century American ceramics.

He helped shape Art Deco design in the United States. This exhibition is the first retrospective on the artist, highlighting more than sixty works including paintings, glass and ceramics, most notably four Electrons from his major commission for the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair, The Fountain of the Atom. This new exhibition premiered at the University of Richmond Museums in February 2013.

Matt Falter of Cortland, Ohio, has been named Project Director for the Ohio Business Resource Network (OBRN). He replaces JoAnn Breedlove who recently was tapped as deputy director for the Workforce Initiative Association. Funded by a $6 million U.S. Department of Labor grant, the OBRN is a collaborative and systematic process to provide individual businesses with a single point of contact in order to address challenges and opportunities and tap into the collective resource of workforce, economic development and education partners. Bob Fay CPA, PFS, CGMA was elected Chairman of the Accountancy Board of Ohio for 2014. The Accountancy Board of Ohio was established in 1908 with the mission of licensing and regulating CPAs and the practice of public accounting in the State of Ohio. The Board protects the public through enforcement and regulation of CPAs to make sure their services conform with professional and ethical standards. Bob was appointed to the Board in 2009 by Governor Strickland and is the first CPA from Stark County to Chair the Board in its 106 year history.
