than the students themselves. So we asked them to share highlights from their experience – what stuck out, what impacted them the most, what were the firsts and what were the greatest learning opportunities (or not), or just random musings.

The highlight from this placement was the opportunity to learn and facilitate PCR swabbing.

TOP TIP Make it good but make it

QUICK!

Personally, I have had a lot of experience with getting PCR swabs done on myself but have never been taught how to do one. We started by practicing on ourselves before doing it on another student. I must say, this was one of the scariest experiences of the placement as I didn’t want to hurt my fellow nursing students. All of the practice was worth it in the end as I completed multiple PCR and supervised RAT tests on different aged people at CBAC. JANAYA.

It has been a very interesting placement this semester. I felt it could be difficult to go around different places at first, but I was able to see other nursing careers that I had never thought about or came across. I am glad to be part of the team during this pandemic now as I used to fear COVID but it has been an amazing journey in terms of the nursing experience. Thank you so much for all the support and effort everyone made for us!

Working alongside the RN’s, social workers and heath care staff at the Covid Community Hub, has been a humbling experience that I will take with me in my nursing career. I’ve witnessed compassionate care, kindness and consideration to people of all walks of life. The team were non-judgemental and always maintained their composure in challenging situations like when dealing with distressed clients in SIQ. I leave this placement experience feeling thankful for the opportunity to work and learn alongside knowledgeable health professionals.

OLIVIA.

When I was discharging a young woman that was alcohol dependent, and had been for most of her life I had the opportunity to talk to her a bit about her life and realised this was a particularly low point for her. She was extremely grateful to have all the support we could offer and was showing open vulnerability and this experience gave me more of an insight into how alcohol can affect someone’s life long term. It’s important to show empathy and kindness. I have experienced in nursing, kindness can go a long way. TASHARN.

Throughout this placement I have I will walk away forever met people that not only can be remembering the passionate approach professional, but when they take of the team and how they wrapped that “mask” off have no problem in their ‘figurative’ arms around those in our community needing support showing themselves to be one of the most quirky, funny, driven and navigating their COVID journey. “I have had a good experience during my community placement this year. We have learnt so much about the response of covid in NZ and I’m glad to have this opportunity to work with the lovely team of nurses who were supportive throughout our placement. I have enjoyed this placement because we get to see many aspects of work areas related to covid which was an excellent opportunity for us to see what it was like to work with during the pandemic and being exposed to the different environments in the nursing field”.

HUILIN.

What a great opportunity it’s been to get to see “under the hood” and be part of New Zealand’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. If variety is the spice of life, this placement has been fully seasoned.

One of the many stand-out experiences was receiving a medical repatriation flight from Australia via private jet at

ChCh international airport.

MAT.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the border with Rhonda the registered nurse. I learnt all about the border order legislations and got to meet all the airport staff such as customs, police, border security and the dog handlers (and we can’t forget the beagle Joplin!).

I enjoyed learning about the different roles that help the airport function during a pandemic. I found it a great learning opportunity because it was good exposure to a different type of nursing. I also enjoyed providing education on doing the RATs to the passengers. KATE.

Thank you all for being so supportive and friendly throughout this placement. I really had a fantastic time and learnt so much. I never knew so much work and team effort was involved in this organisation, it felt great to be part of the team PRIYANKA.

I have really enjoyed being on placement at th e hub and understanding what goes on behind the scenes to keep our comm unity safe. I’ve have a lot of learning opportuni ties out in the community that I didn’t ev en know existed prior to this expe rience.

ANDIE.

I highly enjoyed my time at the Covid vaccination clinic as I was able to independently set up my own vaccination booth and take control over the entire vaccination process.

Being at this clinical placement allowed me to complete my first ever vaccination, and now I am competent to continue vaccinations in my future nursing practise. Working within the COVID-19 health services during a global pandemic is a ‘once in a life time’ opportunity I never thought I would get to experience. MADDIE.

It has been a real privilege being part of the Covid-19 response. Being of service in my community is a key driver for me. I have enjoyed meeting new people along the way, learning new skills and being part of the nursing team!
