Beyond Happiness Let me begin by saying I want to wish for you something far greater than “Happy Thanksgiving” or “Merry Christmas.” Rather, I desire for you deep joy!

With the loss and trauma we have all experienced this year, moments of feeling “happy” or “merry” have been few and far between. To not only survive a year like 2020, but to thrive, something far grander than “happiness” is required. We need something that will satisfy us that is not dependent on political elections, racial equality, economic stability, vaccinations or any other external events or people. What we need is a joy that cuts across circumstances and sustains us through the most difficult trials in life.

How can we do that? We can learn so much from those who have gone before us, who have faced the unthinkable and emerged from the experience thriving with joy. In 1944, Elie Wiesel (age 15) and his family were taken by the German army to Auschwitz concentration camp where up to 90% of the people were killed on arrival, including his mother and younger sister.

After being transferred to a second concentration camp, his father was also killed. Much could be made about Wiesel’s accomplishments following the war—Noble Laureate, authored 57 books, professorship at prestigious universities, Presidential Medal of

Freedom, establishing the Holocaust Museum in Washington, etc. However, what marked his life was the joy he lived out in his expressions of peace, forgiveness and embracing all repressed people and races. As we discussed at our 2020 Retreat, his joy was rooted in gratitude. He states, "When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity." We have so much to learn from someone like Elie Wiesel who found a way to be sustained by gratitude and joy and not “happiness.”

To be clear, I am not discounting the power of happiness – we all love to feel happy! But discovering the pathway to feeling happy, and ultimately receiving joy, is found in service to others. That’s the key. Dr. Martin Luther King put it so well – “Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget

that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”

By all accounts, 2020 has been a most extra-ordinary year. Yet, in the midst of all that has transpired, watching the Canopy family selflessly serve our kids and families while also serving each other has inspired me beyond words. One hundred years from now, when history reflects on the events that have marked this year, the record will reflect that a group of extraordinary people drew from a deep well of joy to serve others. You have put on full display within our communities what our third Core Value represents.

You have demonstrated the power of joy that comes from selflessly serving others. While I am immeasurably grateful we have found tangible ways to thank you for all you have done this year, I know your true reward is to step into the intangible joy found in contributing to something greater than yourself.

On behalf of a grateful Board, Senior Team, the Canopy family and all the lives you have transformed this year because of your selfless service – I am deeply grateful for you!

Canopy stays Rooted in Gratitude during 2020

As with all things 2020, our Annual Retreat looked different from years past. Being able to bring everyone safely together through ZOOM was quite an experience, but also a welcomed time to reconnect with team members from across the state.

Canopy’s Rooted in Gratitude Food Drive was a great opportunity to stop and be thankful for our blessings and to meet a tangible need among the families we serve. We also announced the recipients of our Core Value Awards (which are fully highlighted in this edition) and our team building activity centered on the exciting announcement of a new Core Value that gives light to Canopy’s desire to not only be a Great Place to Work, and a place of inclusion that values the diversity and unique qualities of each person.

Employees honored for exemplifying Canopy's Values Each year, Canopy Children’s Solutions recognizes exemplary staff members as recipients of one of Canopy’s four Value Awards. These awards are based on the organization’s foundational values: voice, relationships, joy and very best, which guide Canopy’s mission at every level in our organization. Individuals are nominated by their peers for the way they live out the values through their work and commitment to Canopy’s mission. Honorees were announced during the staff retreat.

The voice of our children and families always comes first

The 2020 Voice Value Award recipient is Kristy Flemming, a MYPAC Wrap Facilitator in Greenville.

“I believe you should be the change you want to see in the world,” said Kristy. “I live out our Canopy Core Values because I believe in what they stand for and continue to commit myself to our mission because I know the positive impact it has on those we serve.”

“Kristy is one of Canopy's MVP's,” wrote one of her peers in their nomination.

“Kristy stands in the gap for the children and families advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. By being an advocate for the children and families, she has built lasting relationships and partnerships with the schools.

The schools often call her when they are having issues with any child, even if they are not in our care. She does not believe in cookie cutter services and does her best to ensure that families get the services they need. She celebrates her families and has a true passion for helping others.”

Kristy is not an individual who waits to be asked to help. She seeks out opportunities to serve without expecting or desiring fanfare in return.

The 2020 Relationships Value Award goes to Bridgette Edwards. She has served Canopy for 27 years ago and currently works as the Case Manager for the CARES School Jackson.

“Being honored for the ‘Relationships Matter’ service award was very surprising,” said Bridgette after learning of the award. “I was extremely moved by the kind words of my coworkers and am grateful to work with such a supportive group of people.”

“Bridgette has been at Canopy ‘her whole life,’” said a staff member about Bridgette. “She maintains a high standard of how things should be carried out and makes sure every family is treated with the utmost respect and dignity. She treats her client families all like her own and ensures our families and our staff always know that we matter!”

Bridgette was also recognized for her efforts in assisting CARES School families during the COVID-19 shutdown. She served children from inside and outside the school through phone calls, virtual teleconferencing, mail and text, and met with each Day School student to ensure the families had what they needed during a difficult transition.

We take great joy in service to others

The 2020 Joy Value Award goes to Charlesia Mean, in-CIRCLE therapist in Hattiesburg.

“To hear my name and see my picture on the screen for the ‘JOY award’ reminded me why I do what I do and who I do it for,” said Charlesia.

“This year has truly been about growth and self-reflection and this honor has confirmed that it’s okay to not know all of the answers and to use that vulnerability to strengthen others.”

“Charlesia demonstrates a passion for serving others,” one person wrote. “She intentionally chooses to help others,

Charlesia transitioned from a therapist to a supervisor in 2019. She has worked hard over the past year to be an example of a servant leader to strengthen her team and provide support and encouragement during difficult times.

Our families and our communities deserve our very best

The 2020 Very Best Value Award goes to Eddie Delgado, Canopy's Director of Information Technology.

“Words cannot describe what an honor it is to be recognized for one of Our Core Values,” said Eddie.

“Canopy is an amazing place to work. I am blessed be part of such an extraordinary organization with a mission to help all kids.”

“Eddie always goes above and beyond his job responsibilities by working late into the evenings and even responding to many emails on the weekends,” said his peer. “He provides great customer service and always follows up to make sure questions get answered. Eddie is definitely a role model of giving your very best with a positive attitude in everything you do no matter how busy things are.”

Eddie and his IT team were integral in transitioning more than 90 percent of Canopy’s solutions statewide to a virtual platform during the early stages of the pandemic ensuring children and families could continue to receive the care and support they needed. Eddie was recognized for always looking ahead at innovative options that would help his co-workers be able to performs their roles more effectively which translates to better outcomes for our clients.

CustomerGauge –Privileging the VOICES of our Children and Families

If you’ve worked at Canopy for a while, you’ve no doubt heard of “Perception of Care.”

Maybe, (hopefully?) you’ve heard the term “CustomerGauge” as well.

If you’ve ever wondered what either of them are, why we do them, are they the same thing, etc., allow me to attempt to clarify and explain.

Years ago, our client satisfaction platform was known as “Perception of Care.” You may have seen the surveys on various shades of blue and green paper. We’d hand them out to all of our clients and families once per quarter and supervisors would send them to Quality and Evaluation and you likely never knew what happened after that.

At that point, Quality and Evaluation aggregated the results, the scores and why they were the way they were would be discussed in a meeting or two, then we all went about our business until the next quarter when it was “time to send the survey again.” Historically, we did an adequate job of collecting the data, but we lacked the real-time feedback that allowed us to act on that data.

Last year, we embarked on a journey with CustomerGauge, a web-based platform that allows us to evaluate customer experience and satisfaction.

CustomerGauge affords us the opportunity to get real-time, specific feedback about our performance with those we serve by sending surveys via email or text message. Additionally, there are reporting capabilities that the Quality and Evaluation Team is developing that will inform program leaders of the feedback on a regular cadence to avoid our data falling in that black hole. We are finally getting to a place where data around this metric can drive positive

change for those we serve.

There is no stronger and more direct line of sight to our first core value, the voice of our kids and families always comes first, than empowering families to share feedback about their experience with us.

Canopy is not the only option for these types of solutions.

The fact that parents and guardians choose us to help heal and restore their children and families is an awesome privilege, but one that comes with disciplined responsibility on each of our parts. The families we serve allow us into the most vulnerable areas of their lives, so how in turn, can we steward that responsibility? By asking them how we can do better and ACTING ON IT! Over the next several months, we will be sharing more about our client experience program here and through other avenues around Canopy. We’ll share details about the platform, how scores are calculated, what our scores actually mean and other relevant information you need to know. In the meantime, inform and encourage your client families to share their VOICE when they get that email or text from Canopy. Let’s be obsessed with feedback in 2021!

CARES School Teacher Receives Classroom Grant Jennifer Cottrell, an autism spectrum disorder teacher at Canopy's CARES School Hattiesburg, recently received a classroom grant from the Mississippi Professional Educators (MPE).

Cottrell’s funded project is entitled, “Tortoise in the Classroom.” This project introduces a pet tortoise into the classroom, thus encouraging responsibility, compassion and leadership skills among students. The grant also funded hands-on art and interactive materials for the students.

“My goal of the project is to provide the students with a thematic learning experience in which students learn about the responsibility of caring for a new pet through shared reading, science, and art experiences,” said Cottrell. “Children on the autism spectrum are often more hands-on learners and this is an exciting way to engage students and teach new skills.”

“Jennifer is one of those special teachers that always goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students,” said CARES School Hattiesburg Principal Robin Davis. “She is also very dedicated to looking ‘outside the box’ in order to provide fun learning experiences in her classroom.”

Cottrell has been teaching since 2001.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and earned her master’s in Curriculum and Instruction in Autism Spectrum Disorder from Arizona State University. Currently, Cottrell is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi working on her degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Severe Disabilities. She is a resident of Lumberton.

• Risking Connection: If you have never participated in Risking Connection Basic Training, which is our foundational trauma training for all Canopy employees, be on the lookout for sign up instructions for 2021. This training will be offered virtually, with a 3-hour training once each month for 6 months. Our trainers have been working hard to make the shift to offering Risking Connection virtually, and look forward to seeing you soon!

Beth McNamee who serves as Canopy’s Manager of Organizational Development and Training has announced her retirement at the end of this year. Beth has long served Mississippi’s children in social work even before joining Canopy in 2007 in the role of Division Director. For the past six years, Beth has committed herself to ensuring staff at Canopy are well-equipped to serve our children and families and has worked diligently to create professional development opportunities and trainings that meet the needs of staff and the growing and diverse challenges of those who come to Canopy for help. We are grateful for her service, leadership and commitment.

“It has been a great privilege to work for Beth over these past 3 years,” said Sarah Howe, LMS Administrator who has worked closely with Beth since 2017. “Her commitment to improving the lives of kids and families over her decades as a social worker are an inspiration, and her legacy will continue through the many programs and departments she shepherded during her time at Canopy.”

The Five Side Effects of Kindness One of the first principles we learn as a child is to “be kind.” It seems so simple which could be why it’s so easy to forget. Did you know that “being kind” has positive side effects for both the receiver as well as the giver? Scientific evidence proves kindness changes the brain, impacts the heart and immune system, is an antidote to depression and even slows the aging process of the body. I recently read a book The Five Side Effects of Kindness by David Hamilton that covers in depth the science behind this. Seeing that it is the holiday season and the end of a very stressful, unorthodox year, I thought it would be a good reminder to us all on the benefits of being kind as outlined in Hamilton’s book.

Kindness makes us happier Kindness doesn’t just make us “feel” happy, it physically changes the brain. It produces serotonin, which is exactly what some antidepressants seek to boost. It also alters the structure of the brain if what we practice is consistently, essentially ‘wiring in’ a kind nature and the happiness that comes with it.

Kindness is good for your heart (literally) The feeling that kindness brings us actually causes the release of oxytocin in our body. This in turn triggers the release of other chemicals (nitric oxide and ANP) and the result is the actual dilation of our arteries and a reduction of blood pressure. (So cool!) Nitric Oxide also helps protect against the formation of the plaques that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Oxytocin also counters two processes that lead to hardening of arteries: oxidative stress and inflammation. So kindness protects the heart.

Shea Hutchins, Chief Solutions Officer telomeres and immunosenescence.To sum it up, the chemicals (oxytocin, nitric oxide) that are released by acts of kindness have multiple positive effects on our body’s muscular, nervous, and immune system, even our DNA. Kindness improves relationships Kindness is what makes friendships and relationships successful. Our friends and loved ones make bids for connection several times a day and when we respond actively and supportively, it increases the chances of our relationships standing the test of time.

Kindness is contagious Ordinary acts of kindness spread beyond the actual person helped. The ‘three-degree rule’ means that each time we are kind, we inspire someone else to be kind (one degree), who inspires someone else (two degrees), who inspires someone else (three degrees). It is the ‘ripple effect’ of kindness.

I continue to be fascinated by the connection between the mind and the body. This book has helped me be more intentional about my acts of kindness and a focus on gratitude. It reminds me “how beautiful the day can be when kindness touches it” (George Ellison).

Let’s all strive to find the beauty of kindness each day.
