2021 2022

Annual Report

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2022!

Cannon Community,

I love writing the opening letter for this report because it requires us to reflect on the previous year, how our work together as a community has influenced our present—and how it will inspire our future. To borrow from the author James Clear, “The observant person finds many teachers.”

As a learning community in 2021-2022, we saw our fair share of challenges. But we also found purposeful moments with family, teachers, coaches, and friends that kept us determined and made us better. And now, in 2022-2023, we are relishing and reclaiming the relationships, growth experiences, and community traditions that radiate the soul of Cannon School.

Knowing that each of us belongs at Cannon School is essential to that soul. Inherently, we know that belongingness is a critical success factor in keeping our promise to help students along their unique journeys as learners and young adults. For this reason, we thank our educators, who continue to manifest our collective Commitment to Diversity, Belongingness, and Engagement in our classrooms and hallways. And we thank those volunteers who are reimagining our Cannon Cultures parent group to support our school’s commitment to every student’s sense of belonging.

We also remain grateful for the work of a large group of school leaders and trustees who have continued to build up our community by advancing Cannon’s Long Range Campus Master Plan. They have developed a detailed approach that will start solving our space needs on campus and enhance our learning programs, all while continuing to improve and modernize our campus’s safety and security profile. It is a comprehensive effort to ensure a flourishing future for our campus community.

Please know that year after year, whether you are a student, educator, parent, alum, or friend, your actions light a path for our school and for one another as we endeavor to nurture our students’ journeys of belonging and becoming.

With gratitude for your partnership, G.

DEAR

DEAR

Friends and Families,

Recently, one of my colleagues lost a family member. While she was away from the office, she emailed to remark on the outpouring of love she was receiving from our Cannon community. In the email, she shared the poem “Small Kindnesses” by Danusha Lameris, in which the last lines read:

“We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange. What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, ‘Here, have my seat,’ ‘Go ahead — you first,’ ‘I like your hat.’”

Cannon’s core value of kindness comes to life on each of these forty or so pages, and I hope you will take a moment to appreciate all of the relationships this report represents. Like me, I know you are grateful to be part of our Cannon community and for how we show up for one another every day, every year.

Throughout this report, you will see members of our school community who support the Cannon Fund annually, who serve as corporate partners, who have contributed to campus and programmatic enhancements over the years, and who have given in memory or admiration of a loved one.

As you will also read, Cannon’s progress in 2021-2022 was only possible with the help of dedicated parent leaders and volunteers. Here, I would like to extend special thanks to Cannon’s Advancement Committee, chaired by Lisa Combs, and Cannon’s PAC Groups, led by Holly Cagle, Renee Wheeler, and Ben Maynor.

On behalf of all Cannon students and educators, your daily kindnesses bolster our hearts and our opportunities— and we are truly grateful.

Sincerely,

4
Todd

On behalf of Cannon School’s students and educators, thank you to everyone who supported the Cannon Fund in 2021-2022. We are grateful for our community’s dedication which helped us have a record-breaking number raised for the Cannon Fund—a number that supports our students’ learning and growth year over year. Like all independent schools, Cannon covers a sizable portion of our annual operating costs through the Cannon Fund. We are thankful to everyone who stepped up and generously gave back in 2021-2022.

What the Cannon Fund provides:

• Print and online resource materials for our libraries

• Updated laptops and iPads

• Music and art supplies, instruments, scripts, and sheet music

• Stipends for our athletic coaches

• Uniforms for our athletic teams

• Professional development for our educators

• Outfitting the arts studio and esports lab

• Alumni programming

• Financial aid for our students

CANNON FUND

On behalf of all Cannon School educators, I am grateful to everyone who supported the Cannon Fund in 2021-2022. As a community, we not only reached but surpassed our goal of $650,000 by raising $679,176, the highest total in our school’s history!

In a year which saw events and gatherings back on campus, the Cannon Fund continued to grow due to the generosity of so many, including our current parents, alumni and their parents, grandparents, and friends of the school. In addition, our educators and board of trustees both reached 100 percent participation again.

Your support of our annual campaign means so much because it enhances academic opportunities for students, provides critical support to our athletic, arts, and technology programs, and allows for professional development for our educators.

I would like to thank our Cannon Fund Parent Liaison Team, led last year by Sarah Busby and Renee Wheeler. It would not have been possible to reach this critical milestone without this dedicated group of volunteers. As Cannon parents, they understood that it takes a community to help each learner on a journey of growth. Because of their efforts, 657 donors were inspired to give— some for the first time and some for another consecutive year.

In addition, I would like to thank our twenty-two corporate partners, whose support benefits each of our PAC Groups as well as the Cannon Fund. Thank you also to Stacy Hensley for her leadership and vision to make this program so strong.

Thank you so much to all who gave back to Cannon School. I am excited for another successful year in 2022-2023.

CANNON FUND

We enjoyed the most successful Cannon Fund campaign in our school’s history, raising a record-breaking $679,176 from 657 donors. We would like to thank the parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents, faculty and staff, and so many more who generously gave back.

Those who gave in 2021-2022 at the $1,500 level and above are recognized as members of the Cannon Society. Cannon Society names are designated in bold typeface.

Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Cannon School’s success, providing the means by which Cannon can carry out its mission. The Consecutive Giving Society was created to honor Cannon School’s most loyal families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Names of those who have given for five or more years consecutively are designated with an asterisk.

LIGHTS ON ATHLETIC FIELDS

Cannon Athletics is a tremendous source of pride for our entire school community and an exciting way for prospective families to encounter our school culture. Cannon School’s athletic complex continues to evolve along with the growing enthusiasm of our student-athletes, coaches, fans, and visitors.

Thanks to the generosity of current Cannon families and the Cougar Club, we added outdoor LED lighting on Cannon’s baseball field and upper tennis courts. The lights will increase visibility and safety for studentathletes; enable training and competition in the evening; attract talented coaches and assistants who are unavailable in the afternoons; and enhance the experience of student-athletes and spectators.

IMAGINE TOMORROW

Cannon School extends its deepest gratitude to the 194 families, friends, alumni, faculty, and staff, who from 2016 to 2017, raised more than $3.8 million for the Imagine Tomorrow Campaign. Together, these donors created new opportunities for Cannon students with the new Middle School Addition, dedicated classrooms for the Lower School World Language Program and the After School Program, and the new Upper School technology space— The Mill @ Cannon School.

REMEMBERING

Matthew “Wheels” Wheeler ’19

We were heartbroken to learn that Matthew Allyn Anderson Wheeler ’19 passed away far too soon on September 30, 2021. However, as our Cannon community continues to take comfort in reflecting on Matthew’s life, we are undeniably proud of how he made the lives of his family, friends, and teammates better because of his kindness, care, and sense of humor.

We remember Matthew often as an avid learner, a passionate athlete, a thoughtful friend, and a dedicated family member. At Cannon School, he played football and baseball for six years and was named the first All-Conference Offensive Lineman in our school history as a member of our varsity football team. Beyond Cannon, Matthew was a junior at Northeastern University majoring in mechanical engineering and a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi.

Honoring Matthew’s tremendous heart, it’s no surprise that his family, Nicolle Anderson, Mike Wheeler, and his siblings Sarah ’09, Emily ’12, Hannah ’16, David ’23, and Jack ’26, found a purposeful way to remember Matthew and help other Cannon students. They established the Matthew “Wheels” Wheeler Endowed Athletic Fund, which provides need-based support for student athletic expenses not covered by tuition to include, but not be limited to, equipment, travel, sport packs, and educational support services. They also donated two benches overlooking our stadium field, where it’s a familiar scene to see friends and teammates hanging out together.

We are grateful to Matthew’s family for honoring his genuine spirit while also teaching kindness to Cannon students now and in the future.

REMEMBERING

Claire Miley

On July 21, 2019, Claire Elise Miley, a vibrant rising ninth grader, passed away in an accident on Lake Norman. Words are inadequate to express the depth of this sudden and all-toosoon loss, but we continue to take comfort in sharing bright memories of Claire. The Miley family, friends, and our Cannon community remember the happiness of watching Claire go after her many passions. We remember her often as a student, an athlete, a dancer, and a free spirit who loved traveling, experiencing nature at Bald Head Island, and spending time with friends–singing, dancing, and laughing.

It seems only fitting that Claire’s parents, Allison and Robert, found a unique and tangible way to honor her memory on Cannon School’s campus. They donated Adirondack chairs overlooking our stadium field. Each chair includes a small plaque with Claire’s name and a song title or quote that holds meaning to Claire, her friends, and family – “Ocean Eyes,” “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Three Little Birds,” “Colors of the Wind,” “Sunshine on My Sunday Best,” “Carolina Girls,” and “You Gave Me a Forever Within the Numbered Days, and I’m Grateful.”

On sunny days, you will find students, teachers, and coaches sitting on those chairs, talking, laughing, and being together. We thank the Miley family for finding this perfect way to keep the warmth of Claire’s memory with us.

The endowment at Cannon School builds the foundation for long-term stability and success, and is a critical source of income. The endowment was at a balance of $13,058,099 at the end of this past fiscal year. An individual or family may choose to establish a named fund that will support an area of the school that is most important to them and their family, support Cannon’s g eneral endowment, or support an existing endowed fund. FOOTBALL AT CANNON

In November 2021, the Cannon community celebrated its first football state championship in program history. For the previous three seasons, Cannon School and Concord Academy combined our schools’ football programs to enable us to field one team—the Cabarrus Warriors. Beginning with the 2022 season, our varsity football players from both schools competed with the team name of CANNON COUGARS. With these updates, new equipment, including new uniforms were required. Thanks to the generosity of Cannon families, including a lead gift from the Marion family, our student-athletes have benefited from several enhancements, including:

• New Cannon branded uniforms

• New storage shed filled with new practice equipment to maximize player development

• Guardian helmet covers for all players to improve safety

COUGAR CONNECT

Your Alumni Network

The Cannon School Alumni Association is proud to share your online networking portal and one-stop shop for all things alumni-related. The goal of Cougar Connect is to help alumni re-engage with former classmates and friends and bridge all class years and alumni together through:

Networking | Careers | Events | Mentorship

Register online at alumni.cannonschool.org to start connecting with alumni across the country, across graduation years, and to reconnect with your old classmates.

CANNON SCHOOL LEGACY SOCIETY

With a planned gift to Cannon School, you can create a lasting legacy in your family’s name with a planned gift. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is by naming Cannon School as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, or financial account. In addition, you can name Cannon School as a beneficiary in a will or living trust.

Benefits Are:

Flexible: You can change your beneficiary designation.

Revocable: You remain in control of your assets during your lifetime.

Tax Deductible: You may avoid or reduce estate and income taxes.

Making a planned gift grants you membership into the Legacy Society, which recognizes those who have included Cannon School in their estate plans. In addition, your gift will protect and enhance the value of a Cannon degree.

For more information or to discuss your options, please contact Todd Hartung, Director of Advancement, at 704-721-7189 or thartung@cannonschool.org or David Ibsen, Director of Development and Annual Giving, at 704-721-7186 or dibsen@cannonschool.org.
