Dear Cannon Community, On the morning of August 12, 2021, Cannon School’s educators closed the books on summer break and gathered together on campus for our first all-faculty-and-staff meeting of this new school year. Throughout our gathering, we focused on the concept of stewardship and how together we would continue to intentionally support the students, families, and colleagues entrusted to our care. Upon reflection, this theme of stewardship truly took root in the 2020-2021 school year—due in large part to each member of our Cannon community and their generosity reflected in these forty or so pages. As Cannon educators, we Christopher and Family remain focused on stewarding our school’s present and future. In the present, we have dedicated ourselves to what everyone wants most—being in school and together with our kids. At the same time, we have committed to mapping out a path toward the future by adopting a new strategic framework in service of building our Community, growing our Students and Educators, supporting their Wellness, all while ensuring Cannon’s long-term Sustainability. On behalf of all of us here at Cannon, we are so grateful to our parents, volunteers, and Trustees for entrusting your children to us in the present and for your partnership in envisioning Cannon’s future with us—even during challenging times. For five decades now, Cannon’s students, parents, educators, administrators, alumni, and friends have proven that success is possible when we learn, and grow, and dream together. I hope you will take just a few minutes to flip through these pages and feel energized by seeing the people, programs, and learning community that keep improving, no matter the challenges.

As you will read, not only did our Cannon community members achieve the highest Cannon Fund goal in school history, but their generosity also enabled: a renovation to update some of Cannon’s arts spaces for optimal performance; the addition of outdoor LED lighting on the baseball field and upper tennis courts; and the creation of a new practice and competition space for Cannon’s growing esports team.

On behalf of Cannon’s educators, we are grateful for all the creative ways parents and volunteers found to support us in the classroom, on stage, and on the fields and courts in 2020-2021. I extend special thanks to Cannon’s Advancement Committee, chaired by Joan Ankrom, and Cannon’s PAC Groups, led by Horace Bryan, Holly Cagle, Mandy Craft, and Ben Maynor. Cannon Renovates Arts Spaces for Optimal Performance Cannon School underwent a renovation this past summer 6

Every few years, Cannon School re-evaluates our current spaces, to ensure that they are still suiting our students’ needs. This year, it quickly became apparent that the current art and music spaces could benefit from a renovation to better suit our community’s growing population and needs. Thanks to a grant from the Cannon Foundation, an anonymous donation, and support from Cannon Advocates For the Arts (CAFTA), and Cannon Cultures, Cannon School underwent a renovation this past summer to update the Upper/Middle School band and strings room, the Upper School art studio, and the patio workspace outside the ThinkTank. Construction was completed over and greeted students when the doors opened this August. We really needed to do something to showcase our programs and better meet our needs to do something to showcase our programs and better meet our needs,” said Mr. Nate Rogers, director of visual arts and assistant head of Upper School for academics. “So, we looked at what each department needed. Band and strings needed better air control and sound attenuation. We’d done some in-house sound paneling to the current cinder block walls, but they

needed something conducive to better sound. Also, their exterior wall shared the outside patio workspace with the ThinkTank, so they needed something quieter.” “As far as the art space, we have bigger and more varied programs in which we have multiple students doing a wide variety of different things all at the same time. We just needed more space,” Rogers continued. The best way to accomplish these goals was to flipflop the arts studio with the band room, allowing band to move further away from the noise of saws and drills in the ThinkTank. As part of the project, the patio workspace between the ThinkTank and the current band room was enclosed with a roof and garage doors, to serve as a collaborative area for both Middle and Upper School students. This makes it a three-season space with weather protection. “We’ve been trying really hard to get our Upper School visual art students to work with our Middle School tech students. So, something we’re really excited about is the building of this cross-divisional space in which they can work together,” said Rogers. Right now, talk is of the students teaming up to design and build furniture for the space. 7

Every year, we ask families and friends to make the Cannon Fund their first giving priority because it benefits all aspects of campus life and becomes part of the school’s operating budget. Here are just a few examples of how your Cannon Fund dollars were utilized in 2020-2021.

CANNON FUND DOLLARS AT WORK:

In addition to supporting academics, arts, athletics, faculty professional development, and alumni programming, the Cannon Fund provided SWIVL for all classrooms, infrastructure and subscriptions to livestream Cannon events, upgrades to our HVAC systems, including upgraded air filters and thermometers, Zoom licenses, PPE, extra resources related to cleaning, and student financial aid.

The Cannon Fund To begin, I would like to thank everyone who supported the Cannon Fund during the 2020-2021 school year. As a community, we not only reached but surpassed our goal of $600,000 by raising $639,209, the highest amount raised in our school’s history. The Cannon Fund continued to grow due to the generosity of 660 donors, including our parents, alumni and their parents, grandparents, and friends of the school. In addition, our educators and board of trustees both reached 100 percent participation again this year. Why is the Cannon Fund so important? A vibrant Cannon Fund enhances the educational opportunities for our students today and protects and increases the Director of Development value of a Cannon diploma. A gift to the Cannon Fund covers operating expenses and Annual Giving not funded by tuition. Your Cannon Fund dollars are used to support upgrades in our classrooms and to our athletic and arts programs, to provide professional development opportunities to our talented educators, and to support alumni programming. I would like to thank our dedicated Cannon Fund Parent Liaison Team, who has been led by Sarah Busby and Sheetal Patel-Thakkar. This committed group of volunteers worked tirelessly to help other families understand the importance of giving beyond tuition to support our students and educators. Lights On Athletic Fields Cannon Athletics is a tremendous source of pride for our entire school community and an exciting way for prospective families to encounter our school culture. Cannon School’s athletic complex continues to evolve along with the growing enthusiasm of our student-athletes, coaches, fans, and visitors. The John Riley Endowed Fund This past spring, our Upper School students had the opportunity to travel to Pigeon Key, Florida—and an Upper School student was awarded funds from The Riley Fund to be able to join the trip. That adventurous student was able to experience kayaking through mangrove forests, snorkeling on a coral reef, lessons on marine habitats and animals, and the opportunity to contribute to a worldwide database on species abundance and diversity. The John Riley Endowed Fund for Science, Service, and Travel was established in 2019 in memory of faculty member John Riley. 2020-2021 Endowment Summaries The endowment at Cannon School builds the foundation for long-term stability and success, and is a critical source of income. The endowment has steadily grown to a balance of $14,423,822 at the end of this past fiscal year. An individual or family may choose to establish a named fund that will support an area of the school that is most important to them and their family, support Cannon’s general endowment, or support an existing endowed fund. The principal from these funds is held in perpetuity and invested for long-term growth.

Gifts to the endowment will leave a legacy in which future generations of Cannon students, faculty, and families can enjoy the experience of a Cannon education. These funds enable Cannon to rely on more than revenue from the school to support needs such as: • Providing financial aid for students • Attracting and retaining dynamic faculty members • Improving and enhancing educational, athletic, and artistic programs • Enhancing the campus • Supporting school operations

GENERAL ENDOWMENT The general endowment provides the School with the financial flexibility to meet future challenges and take advantage of quality enhancing opportunities that fall outside tuition and the operations budget. THE FRED AND OPAL BRYANT ENDOWED FUND The Fred and Opal Bryant Endowed Fund was established in 2016 and provides for the continued enhancement and beautification of the Cannon School campus landscape.

THE MALMSTROM FAMILY ENDOWED FUND The Malmstrom Endowed Fund for Academic Excellence was established in 2016 by the Malmstrom family—Ivar, Susanne, Daniela (’14), Emily (’15), and Caroline (’16). The fund provides assistance to Cannon’s Academic Success and Learning Support Program developed by Upper School Learning Specialist, Teresita Lloréns-Hurtado along with assistance from several Cannon School students, including Emily and Caroline Malmstrom.

MICHAEL GRAY JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Michael Gray, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship available to students who demonstrate strong character, academic dedication, and financial need. SPEEDWAY CHILDREN’S CHARITIES ENDOWMENT FOR DIVERSITY The Speedway Children’s Charities Endowment for Diversity funds special scholarships for excellent students who have financial need and supports multicultural programs aimed to increase diversity awareness in the School community. GEORGE W. LILES ENDOWMENT FUND The Liles Endowment was established in 2009 by George Liles, Jr. in memory of his father and long-time Cannon School supporter, Dr. George W. Liles to provide continued operating support for Cannon. THE MARIA DEHAAS ENDOWED FUND The Maria DeHass Endowed Fund was established in 2012 and provides professional development opportunities for counselors and an annual speaker series. RICHARD H. SNYDER FUND The Richard H. Snyder Fund empowers the School to make improvements that are not covered by tuition or the operating budget. EXCELLENCE FUND The Excellence Fund was established by the Board of Trustees to enable the School to be responsive to unforeseen opportunities that might not be planned for in the tuition-funded operating budget. KIMBROUGH FAMILY FUND FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE The Kimbrough Family Fund for Teaching Excellence helps fund training programs for teachers, as well as supplements salaries to enable Cannon School to con-tinually attract and retain the highest caliber faculty.

MATTHEW E. GOSSAGE ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 This fund provides three faculty members, as voted on by Cannon students, funding for professional development and/or classroom needs. The fund was given by the Class of 2019 as a way to honor Cannon’s sixth Head of School, Mr. Matthew E. Gossage. MATTHEW E. GOSSAGE ENDOWMENT The Matthew E. Gossage Endowment was established in 2019 to enable Cannon School to provide annually a fully-funded tuition award to one student who demonstrates a passion for academic inquiry, continuous self-improvement, and servant leadership. Leadership donors will be invited to an annual luncheon with Mr. Gossage. THE TAYLOR DENNY DUKE MEMORIAL ENDOWED FUND The Taylor Denny Duke Memorial Endowed Fund was established in 2018, in memory of Taylor Duke ’09. The fund will provide assistance to Cannon School’s baseball program. The fund will underwrite the combined Middle School and Upper School annual family reception. Additionally, the fund will underwrite and offset the cost of equipment to families within the baseball program not covered by the school’s athletic program. THE DR. JOHN G. SIROIS MEMORIAL FUND This fund was established by Antoinette and JeanLouis Alban Sirois in 2015 in memory of their son Dr. John G. Sirois, husband to Sheila McParlin and father of Rosemary Sirois ’10, David Sirois ’12, Juliana Sirois ’14, and James Sirois ’16. It provides a monetary award to an outstanding English student at Cannon on Senior Night each year. THE JOHN RILEY ENDOWED FUND FOR SCIENCE, SERVICE, AND TRAVEL Established in 2019 in memory of faculty member John Riley, who served as Cannon’s Middle School science teacher from 2002 to 2019, this fund makes travel for trips or projects that incorporate science or service more accessible to Cannon students and/or faculty so they may learn from the intriguing people they meet, see the beauty in our world, and marvel at the surprises that await them on their journeys.

THE MATTHEW “WHEELS” WHEELER ENDOWED ATHLETIC FUND The Matthew “Wheels” Wheeler Endowed Athletic Fund was established in 2021 in memory of Matthew Allyn Anderson Wheeler ’19, a strong learner, thoughtful friend, dedicated family member, and passionate athlete. Corporate Partnership Program Cannon School’s Corporate Partnership Program is a mutually beneficial program that provides businesses the opportunity to spread their message while supporting the exceptional programs here at the school. Building Bright Futures Cannon School extends its deepest appreciation to the more than 400 families, friends, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and staff who from 2012-2014 raised more than $7.4 million for the Building Bright Futures Campaign. More Than a Game It’s an Exciting Time for Esports at Cannon School

Lately, you may have heard the term Esports dropped into conversation around the hallways of Cannon School. So…what is it, exactly? A bunch of kids sitting around playing video games? Not exactly. The high-level definition of Esports is competitive, organized video gaming. Esports’s story began in South Korea in the early 2000’s, when the government there focused on developing their internet and telecommunications infrastructure. Quickly, a wildly popular type of social space emerged, which became esports. Over the last twenty years, organized, multiplayer competitions in which players engaged in games like League of Legends, Overwatch, and Fortnight gained wild popularity— along with the industry’s earnings. 2020 revenue from esports topped out at 947.1 million dollars, and it’s predicted to grow to 1.62 billion in 2024. With such a spike in popularity, it came as no surprise to discover that many Cannon students were already competing from home. Mr. Bill Donovan, director of institutional technology, approached members of his IT team and suggested they visit High Point University, whose club team competes against other colleges. High Point had just renovated a space to become an esports facility. Mr. Tram Tran, manager of information technology, and Mr. Andrew Legra, technology support technician, took the trip up I-85, as well as a visit to Harrisburg University in Pennsylvania, which fields one of the country’s top esports teams. What they witnessed was a far cry from kids simply messing around with video games. “It allowed kids to do more than just play—it was a whole STEAM program. There was video editing, capture, marketing the program. And as far as the competition piece, it was kids competing as teammates in which each is required to complete a special task. It plays to each person’s different talents. We were like, this is it.”

Mill was outfitted with thirty new computers and one dedicated machine for broadcasting, and internet and HVAC upgrading to support the addition. This new space will serve as a communal space to practice and compete. Tran has high hopes for the program, which he will help coach (along with other staff and faculty members). He recognizes that more and more colleges are actually offering esports scholarships to students who can not only play well, but also capture and edit video, photograph, and market themselves. “Since colleges are investing millions of dollars in esports facilities, they want to make sure they have players,” Tran continued. And professional gamers are not the only end goal—in coming years, it’s predicted that there will be tens of thousands more jobs in the esports sector. “Colleges know that there are companies that need to hire people who are savvy about both esports and business. The future is a person who has both.”

In the fall, CSG organized a COVID-safe LAN party outside, in which forty Cannon students showed up to work together in teams and compete in the games of Fortnight, League of Legends, Rocket League, and Overwatch. Another LAN party followed in the spring, with even more students in attendance. Thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, this past summer, the media production studio in The 35
