A L M A M AT E R O, CANNON Sung to the tune, The Church’s One Foundation arr. Samuel Wesley Lyrics by Mrs. Suzanne C. Howard O, Cannon we exalt thee with voices strong and clear. With passion we move forward our futures bright and near. Respect for others helps us as life itself unfolds. With kindness and with teamwork, we all will reach our goals. With gifts that Cannon gives us, our dreams will be fulfilled. Our heads held high with courage, integrity instilled. Though time may come between us, and friends be miles apart, The hallowed halls of Cannon, will e’er be in our hearts.

H I S T O R Y O F A L M A M AT E R Alma mater is the Latin term for “nourishing mother.” In the 17th century, alma mater began to be used in reference to British colleges or universities because these schools were thought of as places of intellectual and spiritual nourishment. Today, one’s school or university is commonly referred to as one’s “alma mater,” and it has become a common practice to sing one’s alma mater or school song at formal occasions such as Commencement. The lyrics for Cannon School’s Alma Mater, which were written by Mrs. Suzanne C. Howard, are based upon Cannon’s six Core Values: Courage, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Passion, and Kindness. The Alma Mater was first performed by Mrs. Howard’s sister, Ms. Clare Cook Faggart ’72, at a May 2006 retirement celebration for former Headmaster Richard H. Snyder. English organist Samuel S. Wesley (1810-1876) composed the tune, known as “Aurelia.” He received his doctorate in Music from Oxford University at age 29 and was recognized as one of the leading church organists and choirmasters of his day.
