The actual report on the support received from the Cannon community during the 2013-2014 school year can be seen all around us. The visual realities of new spaces to gather and learn literally cast shadows over any set of words to describe the generosity of this community. We have in the Cannon Performing Arts Center (CPAC) a space where students who sing, draw, dance, play, and act can enjoy a vibrant present and envision a future full of the experiences that the arts provide. The Strength Training and Conditioning Center provides a present opportunity to gain strength and improve quickness that our students have never known. What will go on in this space allows these students to think about a future where we compete athletically with an even greater intensity. And the new Randy Marion Family Field House gives everyone who comes to an event or contests on our main field a warm welcome and the sense that there is a purpose and logic to what will go on that evening. So, thank you to J.D. Phillips (the chair of the Advancement Committee), Todd Hartung (our Director of Advancement), Jeff and Kim Burton (co-chairs of our campaign), our team captains, and all of you who gave to make a bright future a reality our students can claim. Alongside the impact of our campaign, we need to pause and celebrate as well the amazing feat of meeting and surpassing our Annual Fund goal for the year. Kelly RattĂŠ-Matsey helped us hold within our vision this year the importance of annual giving to the daily experiences of our students. Our Corporate Partnership Program continues to provide a boost to our Annual Fund and parent groups: Cannon Connections, Cannon Cultures, Cougar Club, and Cannon Advocates For The Arts, and the leadership of our Parents At Cannon (PAC) not only built community this year but also supported Annual Fund efforts and organized events such as the Cannon Golf Tournament that contributed to reaching this goal. Thank you for the concrete and tangible ways you have given in 2013-2014 to make our school a better place for children. “To whom much is given, much is expected.” It is a saying that fits many occasions and is sometimes overused, but I believe that it holds real meaning for the Cannon community because it expresses the mutual dedication that flows between our families and supporters. This past year was one in which our students continued to inspire us with the lessons they learned, the creativity with which they expressed themselves, and the spirit with which they competed. It was a year for Cannon to share our pride in our faculty and the exceptional learning experiences that our students enjoy on a daily basis as well as our desire to provide our students with even brighter futures. It was a year in which we asked much of Cannon families, alumni families, grandparents, friends, corporate partners, trustees, faculty, and staff—and you consistently answered our call. It is a special time at Cannon, and I hope you are as proud as I am to be part of such a generous community. On behalf of the entire Cannon community, I extend thanks to all of you who did your part to help us reach these goals together: More than 585 donors gave $435,045 to the Annual Fund to ensure the success of our school by helping to cover the expenses of an independent school education that are not covered by tuition. These contributions empower Cannon to challenge and engage students, support innovation in the classroom, enrich the arts and strengthen athletics, and provide professional development opportunities for our faculty. From 2012-2014, more than 400 donors raised more than $7.4 million for the Building Bright Futures Campaign. Together, we created new opportunities for Cannon’s artists, athletes, and scholars with six construction projects including the Cannon Performing Arts Center, the Strength Training and Conditioning Center, the Randy Marion Family Field House, enhanced locker spaces and coaches’ offices, the Central Green, and an expanded Middle School. Cannon’s Parents At Cannon (PAC) groups—Cannon Connections, Cannon Cultures, Cougar Club, and Cannon Advocates For The Arts—contributed their time, talents, and treasures in support of our students and faculty in ways that are literally too numerous to count. Twenty-five corporate partners gave $65,900 to support the entire Cannon community and enhance the vibrancy of our campus life. More than sixty donors raised $65,900 for The Rush Zone to improve another area of our campus and honor Dr. Matt Rush, former assistant head of school and head of middle school, for his service to Cannon and middle school families. Giving Through the Seasons for a Hundred Different Reasons

Every year, Cannon School’s Annual Fund is made up of hundreds of unrestricted gifts from Cannon parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends. This year over 585 members of our community contributed more than $435,000 to support our students. These gifts ensure the success of our school community by helping to cover the expenses of an independent school education that are not covered by tuition. These generous contributions enrich the educational experiences of every Cannon student. Each gift helps provide challenging curriculum programs, small class sizes and individualized attention, classroom enhancements, superior faculty and staff and their professional development opportunities, and state-of-the-art technology. We are most grateful to everyone in the Cannon community who supported this year’s Annual Fund.

A N N UA L F U N D S U M M A RY & H I G H L I G H T S • The campaign surpassed its goal of $420,000 during an active campaign year in which more than $7.4 million was also raised for Building Bright Futures. • 100% of Cannon faculty, administration, and trustees supported this important campaign for the eighth year in a row! • 223 donors gave at one of the Cannon Society leadership levels with gifts of $1,000 or more. Their gifts totaled $359,642, accounting for 83% of all gifts to the 2013-2014 Annual Fund. • Parent participation is the foundation of this campaign and the average gift from those who participated was $939 with gifts ranging from $5 to $10,000. • 73% of all donors to this year’s Annual Fund are consecutive donors and we are grateful for their loyal support of this important campaign each year.

SPEEDWAY CHILDREN’S CHARITIES ENDOWMENT FOR DIVERSITY $204,102 The Speedway Children’s Charities Endowment for Diversity funds special scholarships for excellent students who have financial need and supports multicultural programs aimed to increase diversity awareness in the School community.

LILES ENDOWMENT $73,458 The Liles Endowment was established in 2009 by George Liles, Jr., in memory of his father and long-time Cannon School supporter Dr. George W. Liles.

THE MARIA DEHAAS ENDOWED FUND $44,897 The Maria DeHaas Endowed Fund was established in 2012 and will provide professional development opportunities for counselors and an annual speaker series.

KIMBROUGH FAMILY FUND FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE $389,837 The Kimbrough Family Fund for Teaching Excellence helps fund training programs for teachers as well as supplements salaries to enable Cannon School to continually attract and retain the highest caliber faculty.

RICHARD H. SNYDER FUND $85,937 The Richard H. Snyder Fund empowers the School to make improvements that are not covered by tuition or the operating budget.

EXCELLENCE FUND $37,137 The Excellence Fund was established by the Board of Trustees to enable the School to be responsive to unforeseen opportunities that might not be planned for in the tuition-funded operating budget.
