MATT GOSSAGE Head of School Although it may sound so efficient and productive in its conceptual form, the playing out of a dual focus in the real world often leads to frustration, minimal results, and even disaster. The business person says to himself that he can participate in this conference call and answer his e-mail. At the end of the call, he is not sure what was decided, and he is worried he “replied to all” when he should not have. The student in the Upper School is convinced she can maintain the triple focus of downloading iTunes, texting friends, and studying biology, and she cannot understand why her mother has concerns. Finally, the myth of sustaining a dual focus while driving an automobile is exploded all too often for us on our highways and busy streets. Although it sounds great, it is hard and often unwise to do two things at once. Yet, at the beginning of this 2012-2013 school year, the Cannon School community took on the dual focus of a capital campaign (Building Bright Futures) and an annual giving campaign (Giving Today, Shaping Tomorrow). This Annual Report tells an incredible story of a community maintaining a dual focus and supporting Cannon’s mission in unprecedented measures. In regards to Building Bright Futures, our community has pledged over $6,000,000 toward our goal of $7,000,000. Construction on the Performing Arts Center has begun, and construction on the Strength Training and Conditioning Center will begin this winter. Parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends, and corporate sponsors have helped us exceed the goal set for the Annual Fund this year with a total of over $469,000 given. We maintained the dual focus because of leadership. Todd Hartung, our director of advancement, encouraged all of us to keep the capital and annual campaigns yoked together as we talked to people about our School, its needs, and our students. Anthony Sparrow, as chair of the advancement committee, and our Annual Fund parent volunteers worked together to be sure that families understood the respective needs of each campaign and the dual focus for the year. For this leadership, we are grateful. We maintained this dual focus because this community made a conscious choice to keep the biggest picture in front of it. Please know how grateful we are for your willingness to note how critical the Annual Fund is to the “here and now” of our School and for your willingness to seize this moment we have to improve the learning and community spaces on our campus for this generation of students as well as for those who will follow. This dual focus of giving has encouraged all of us who work at Cannon. BOARD OF TRUSTEES PLEDGES $1 MILLION TO BUILDING BRIGHT FUTURES Under the leadership of Board Chair Susan Schneider and Advancement Committee Chair Anthony Sparrow, Cannon’s Board of Trustees collectively pledged the first $1 million to the Building Bright Futures Campaign. We are most grateful for the leadership of this group, but also for their generosity and commitment to Cannon School’s future. Russ Andrews, the new board chair, and J.D. Phillips, the new advancement committee chair, are excited to provide their leadership to wrap up this campaign and help our School raise the last $1 million so that initiatives can be implemented and begin to make a difference for every Cannon student.

The new Performing Arts Center will support a learning environment that thrives on innovation and excellence while the new Strength Training and Conditioning Center and Locker Spaces will allow our athletes to better prepare and compete with other top independent schools.

Building Bright Futures will also provide the additional classrooms and meeting spaces that are needed in our our growing Middle School. And, the technology center will support an even more inventive Middle School curriculum and teach our children to embrace the adoption of new learning tools.

TODD HARTUNG Director of Advancement In looking back at 2012-2013, it has been a year defined by the tremendous human capital that makes up the foundation of our School community. Parents, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, corporate partners, and friends alike inspired us with their financial generosity and their personal connection to Cannon School as we moved the Annual Fund and Building Bright Futures Campaign forward. On behalf of the entire Cannon community, thank you for taking ownership of these important initiatives during this exciting time for our School.

This year, 70 percent of our current parents supported the Annual Fund, which raised more than $469,000 to enrich learning opportunities for every Cannon student. Thank you to Advancement Committee Chair Anthony Sparrow, Director of Annual Giving Kelly Ratte-Masey, and our team of parent volunteers, Nicole Dimond-Diskin, Tina Enrique, Blake Evans, Heidi Fromke, Jennifer Kramer, Beverly Maynor, Angela Micolucci, Nancy Sparrow, and Wendy Watkins for their ongoing dedication. Under the leadership of Amy Lovett and Stacy Hensley, the 2012-2013 Corporate Partnership Program continued to grow and raised more than $64,000 to support Parents At Cannon (PAC), the School’s parent volunteer organizations, and the Annual Fund. Likewise, thanks to the planning team of Karla Venos, Tommy Watkins, and Ben Maynor, the 2013 PAC Golf Tournament was a hole in one, grossing more than $17,000 and bringing together the community for a great day of golf and friendship. Reaching $6 million in pledges towards our $7.1 million goal for the Building Bright Futures Campaign underscores the momentum created by Cannon families and friends who are doing their part to transform our campus and the future of Cannon School. Building Bright Futures began in earnest with the Board of Trustees pledging $1 million under the leadership of Board Chair Susan Schneider and Advancement Committee Chair Anthony Sparrow, and with Kim and Jeff Burton signing on as our campaign chairs. Since then, our campaign progress has been punctuated with several leadership gifts. First, an anonymous Cannon family pledged $1 million to name the new Performing Arts Center, followed by Betty and Randy Marion Sr. and Family, who pledged $500,000 to name the new Randy Marion Family Field House. We are pleased to announce that most recently, two additional anonymous Cannon families stepped forward with leadership gifts of $300,000 and $250,000.

Building Bright Futures continues to evolve into a true community-wide effort, with more than 190 current families and friends having pledged to the campaign by the end of June 2013. All of these families answered our call for support at a level that worked for them, and many committed more than ever before with multiyear pledges and monthly payments to maximize their giving. Looking forward to 2013-2014, it will be a year characterized by continued hard work. Moving forward with the support of our incoming Board Chair Russ Andrews and Advancement Committee Chair J.D. Phillips, we will follow an aggressive construction and financial plan to complete the Performing Arts Center by the start of the 2014-2015 school year, break ground on the Strength Training and Conditioning Center this winter, and raise the remaining funds needed to begin construction on the Randy Marion Family Field House, renovated athletic locker spaces, and the Middle School expansion. We will need everyone’s support to reach our goal, and I look forward to talking with your family and working every day with this exceptional community. Sincerely,
