Summer time is a wonderful time to connect with friends, learn new skills or enhance existing ones, and discover new passions.

At Camp Cannon, we specialize in weekly enrichment sessions focused on The Arts & Academics, College Prep, SciTech, and Sports for students from ages 3 to 18. Campers learn while having fun on our 65-acre campus which includes state-of-the-art classroom facilities and performing arts center, two gymnasiums, a dance studio, a strength and conditioning center, athletic fields, track, tennis courts, and wooded wetlands.

Programs

Camp Cannon programs are open to all private, public, and homeschooled children. The 2020 Camp season runs for eight weeks from June 8th through July 31. The week of June 29-July 2 will be a 4-day camp week. Most camp sessions are three hours in the morning or three hours in the afternoon. Programs start at $190 per half-day session.

There are also full-day sessions available, as well as before and after camp care. Early care is available from 7:30 until 9:00 a.m., and late care is available from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m., both for additional fees.

Campers may stay with us during lunchtime from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m., if indicated at the time of registration. Campers are supervised while they eat, and then allowed to play until they are picked up or until their afternoon session begins. This is designed to add flexibility for busy schedules.

The safety of your child is our number one concern while they are in our care. From drop-off to pick-up, you can be assured that your child is in a safe environment. All our instructors must pass a background check and drug screen, and our facility is secured through a comprehensive security system. Additionally, a certified athletic trainer is on-site during camp sessions to address needs such as medications and to handle any injuries that may occur.

Camps fill up fast! The best way to secure your spot in the camps of your choice is to utilize our online registration system which will require a deposit either by credit card, debit card or ACH. Families wishing to mail a check will register using the paper forms at the back of this brochure.

In order to accommodate for busy schedules and as an added value of our camps, we offer lunch care from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at no additional cost.

Campers may stay after their morning session or come early for their afternoon session, when indicated at the time of registration.

Please note that because camp sessions are offered for children as young as age 3, we require all our campers to be fully potty trained in order to attend.

ACADEMICS College Essay Bootcamp

Offered by: Connie Stavrakas Ages: Rising Seniors Cost: $200 This bootcamp is designed to give rising seniors a jump-start on the college essay writing process. Campers look at actual prompts and draft essays for college applications, which receive feedback from a Cannon Upper School English instructor. Guest speakers and college Admission officers will share what they are looking for in applicants. Students will benefit from bringing their own laptop. A USB flash drive is suggested to save work. (All sessions have the same content.)

Creative Journaling

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 8-11 Cost: $200 What are you waiting for?! Join the craze of journaling, calligraphy and hand lettering. Perfect your own style of writing while creating a journal. Our camp will spark your creative writing juices and ignite your inner artist.

Creative Writing

Offered by: Melanie Coughlin Ages: 10-13 Cost: $190 Unleash your creativity with the written word in this camp. You’ll learn writing rules, and when to break them, in a stress-free environment while working with other students who share your interest in storytelling.

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 11-14 Cost: $200 Are you a natural born leader? Do you want to experience the thrills of creating a new company? Don’t miss out on this camp where you will create and sell handmade products at a Sale-A-Thon. This camp will also dabble in the world of stocks and current events as they relate to businesses.

Habits for Successful Learning

Offered by: Michelle Donah, I Heart Learning Ages: 12-15 Cost: $190 Habits for Successful Learning is taught by published author, Michelle Donah, Ph.D. This camp teaches brain-based strategies for optimized school performance. Students learn science-based successful habits for taking notes, reading efficiently, preparing for and taking tests, anxiety reduction and time management.

Jump Start to Reading & Math

Offered by: Jennifer Ridenhour & Jeanette Milam Ages: 5-6 Cost: $190 Back by popular demand, this session is perfect for students entering school to get a jump start on reading and math skills through daily interactive, themed activities. Investigative themes include: water, insects, colors, fairy tales, and pirates. Campers spend each day in reading and math activities based on their individual readiness and receive activities to share at home.

Math Munchkins

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 6-9 Cost: $200 Math Munchkins is for all budding mathematicians! We immerse the children in rich and multi-sensory activities using manipulatives and hands-on activities to build your child’s math skill set. Through our activities, students will learn about basic addition and subtraction, graphing, telling time, fractions, word problems and money.

Princeton Review ACT Prep Course

Offered by: Mark Kmidowski & Julia Finneyfrock Ages: 14-18 Cost: $475 Specially trained instructors will deliver the well-respected Princeton Review ACT course in time for Fall tests. Students take scored pre- and post-tests to determine weaknesses and strengths and to measure progress. Additionally, the workshop includes ACT workbooks.

Students take the pre-test in advance on Monday, June 8 at 8:30 AM-1:00 PM. Pre-test may also be taken at home.

Princeton Review SAT Prep Course

Book Club: Reading & Writing Refresh

Chase O’Brien Cost: $190 AM Camp – Rising 6th Graders PM Camp – Rising 7th & 8th Graders Worried about nagging your student to read & write over the summer?

Cannon’s 6th Grade English teacher will run a week-long book club. Utilizing a Cannon summer reading list book, students will refresh and enhance reading & writing skills. Specific reading skills include grammar, spelling strategies, writing summaries and reflections.

Small Group College Essay Workshop

Offered by: Ashley Shaefer Cost: $240 Ages: 16-18 (Recommended for rising Seniors) This small-group workshop is designed for students who want highly individualized attention on college essays. First, we focus on generating ideas for the Common Application essays, and then work on writing an engaging college essay with teacher guidance every step of the way, tailored to students' individual needs. By mid-week, students are able to have as much as 30 minutes per session of 1:1 help. This workshop emphasizes brainstorming exercises, essential skills in descriptive writing, and processes of revision.

Students should expect to leave the course with a fully polished Common Application essay.

Spanish Games

Offered by: Teresa Schmitt Ages: 5-8 Cost: $190 This camp is all about playing games that use vocabulary and cultural content from Spanish levels 1, 2, and 3. On the first day, the children will have a review of phonics in Spanish so that they are able to read words on the games (both indoor and outdoor) correctly. The children will also learn about foods from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Spain through a cultural segment with a smorgasbord of treats (gluten and nut-free) on the last day of camp.

Whiz Kids

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 6-10 Cost: $200 Join us on a science discovery mission! We will explore the world of science through everyday objects, experiments, and encounters. This camp will enhance the STEM education philosophies with a big punch of fun. Physics, biology, chemistry, geology, astronomy, and zoology will be covered in this camp.

ARTS American Girl

Offered by: Barbara Falkenbury Ages: 6-10 Cost: $190 Campers are inspired to design and create items for their favorite American GirlÂŽ dolls based on a daily theme. Campers make costumes, beach apparel, sleepover items, and have an accessorizing bash, all to take home. On Friday, campers share their work with a fashion show for their dolls.

Art Safari

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 4-7 Cost: $200 Grab your binoculars because we are going to take a safari around the world!

We will visit different countries each day and learn about native animals through literature, games and art. Discover the thrill of the hunt without leaving camp!

Artful Adventures

Offered by: Christiana Holyer Ages: 7-11 Cost: $190 Come try your hand at art! Campers engage in a variety of fun craft projects utilizing various artistic media, such as painting with string, creating crepe paper mosaics, poured-paint canvases, and producing sun prints with found objects. They will also explore the work of related artists and delve a little into the science behind the projects they create. It all makes for a beautiful week!

Building a Paper Town

Offered by: Teresa Schmitt Ages: 8-14 Cost: $190 Students will learn to build 3D shapes and turn them into houses-buildingsspaces for a paper town. Scaling practice and perspective study will take place on the first day. Plenty of materials will be offered to trigger the imagination of your future landscaping engineer or architect.

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 6-9 Cost: $160 Our D-I-Y camp is for all artsy-craftsy kids who love to express themselves with one-of-a-kind masterpieces and craft styles from around the world.

Creating Art Thru Math

Offered by: No Ordinary Summer Camp Ages: 6-10 Cost: $190 Campers learn how to create artistic projects through the incorporation of math. Artists discover the meaning of two and three-dimensional shapes, patterns, observational drawing versus mirror drawing, pointillism, rotational symmetry, and Op Art while creating unique works such as masks, paintings and an array of different artistic projects to add to their take-home portfolios.

Enchanted Adventures

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 4-7 Cost: $160 Sprinkle some pixie dust and jump on your unicorn, we are heading into the Enchanted Forest! This camp is filled with imagination building experiences and fun! Campers will spark their creativity as they learn about the secret world of fairies, gnomes, elves, unicorns and all things imaginary.

iPadÂŽ Photography

Ordered by: Ellen Loflin Ages: 6-11 Cost: $190 Capture your own amazing photographic masterpieces in this camp designed for little ones who love technology! Students will learn how professional photographers capture beautiful images and enjoy trying out techniques during fun, outdoor photo shoots. Camp will also include editing photos using cool, free apps! Students will leave camp with a shareable slideshow portfolio and a framed print of their best photograph. iPads with free photographic apps downloaded are required. Protective iPad cases are recommended.

Jr. Sculptors

Offered by: Krista Johns Ages: 7-9 Cost: $190 Campers will have fun in this messy, hands-on session, where they will create three-dimensional sculptures using a variety of materials including clay and paper mache. The artwork created will be both decorative and functional.

Offered by: Krista Johns Ages: 5-7 Cost: $190 In this messy, hands-on camp, students focus on creating two and threedimensional works of art using a variety of materials including clay, Sculpey, Model Magic, recycled materials and much more! Students create art pieces that are decorative and functional. Perfect to keep or give as gifts!

Painting with Acrylics

Offered by: Teresa Schmitt Ages: 8-13 Cost: $190 This session focuses on acrylic painting. Students learn how to grid an image onto canvas and then enlarge the image to Trompe l’oeil on a wall.

They will explore different brushes to invest in and the care and maintenance of them. A variety of photos and examples are provided. All supplies are provided, but students will choose their own subject matter.

Photography Compositions

Offered by: Michelle Ferguson Ages: 9-12 Cost: $190 In this camp, students will learn about multiple styles of photography composition. They will create compositions using the rule of thirds, the golden spiral, geometric patterns, radial design, reflections, symmetry, tall crops, positive & negative spaces, and angles. Images will be edited using Lightroom CC. DSLR camera preferred, but students may bring an iPhone or iPad instead.

Photography Workshop

Offered by: Danielle Sandlof Ages: 11-14 Cost: $190 Campers will have fun while learning in this digital photography workshop.

They will learn a variety of composition techniques, completing projects to demonstrate mastery of each one. Some of the project topics include nature, shadows, and optical illusions. On Friday, students may bring cell phones to participate in a photo-editing workshop. Campers will need a digital camera to participate.

PhotoShop® Workshop

Offered by: Ellen Loflin Ages: 8-15 Cost: $340 This camp introduces students to the fundamentals of digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop®, the must-have program for photo manipulation, digital illustration, and more. Students learn the basic functions of Photoshop® such as layers, text, color correction, and photo manipulation through fun and engaging projects. Students must provide a USB flash drive.

Princess Tea Party

Offered by: Lavender Cottage Productions Ages: 4-8 Girls Cost: $190 This popular camp for young ladies is full of surprises. Bringing young dreams to life, a different princess visits each day of camp, including Cinderella, Elsa, and Tiana. Campers learn the fun of proper tea-party etiquette through a curriculum of social skills. Families are invited to attend Friday at 11 a.m. for a tea party demonstration.

Real Imagination Story Time

Each camp day, class stories will be read and then story time turns creative with arts & crafts related to the story of the day. Examples include: caterpillars made after reading “The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar”; goats after reading “Billy Goat Gruff”. If your little one is as curious as George, they will be as snug as a bug in this camp!

Travel the World Through Drawing

Offered by: SmArt Educational Art Ages: 7-10 Cost: $190 Campers will be given their own passport to list the places they visit via drawing. The artwork emphasis will be on “Places & Things” from all around the world. Campers will visit India, drawing the Taj Mahal, and explore Chinese culture by drawing a Chinese dragon. When it comes to learning, a picture is worth a thousand words.

UpCycling Artist

Offered by: Hive Ages: 8-12 Cost: $190 Adventures in up-cycling! Artists learn what upcycling is and then take ordinary items that would have ended up in landfills to create unique and one-of-a kind artwork. Techniques will include mixed media, painting, collage, and sculpture with recycled materials.

Wild, Wild West

App Builders Club

Offered by: Code Ninjas Ages: 7-14 Cost: $199 In this camp students will develop an application from start to finish. The first day will be focused on brainstorming potential app ideas. Students will then bring those ideas to life through the MIT app Inventor framework, successfully building an app that truly is their own.

Web Dev in HTML/CSS

Offered by: Code Ninjas Ages: 10-15 Cost: $225 This camp will cover the essential tools that are the foundation of almost every site on the World Wide Web. HTML is the foundation behind web pages primarily used to add structure and form to text, images, and more.

CSS is the language used to style the HTML content. Campers will learn the fundamentals of both languages to create their own website and learn how to make it stand out.

What if I want to change a session after registering?

Changes and transfers of registration are free of charge before May 1. On or after May 1, there is a $10 per transaction charge on all transfers that are not a result of a camp cancellation due to low enrollment.

Cooking for Beginners

Offered by: Chef Craig Rosekrans Ages: 9-11 Cost: $200 This is a hands-on cooking camp for beginners. The kids will prepare basic family favorite meals from scratch such as: pasta & sauce, omelets, fajitas, and more. At the end of each day, students will sample their meals. Campers will learn basic cooking techniques and knife skills.

Little Chefs Dessert Academy

Offered by: SmArt Educational Art Ages: 4-7 Cost: $190 At the Academy, we train those with the smallest of taste buds to prepare excellent desserts without so much as lifting a knife! Campers will make marvelous treats and have lots of chocolate-covered fun in a safe environment. Campers will go home with a goody bag on Friday.

The Candy Shop

Offered by: SmArt Educational Art Ages: 7-10 Cost: $190 Satisfy your sweet tooth while learning the art of candy making. Learn how to make your own Gummies, Jolly Rancher pops, edible necklaces and more!

Campers will learn how to melt and pour chocolate into a variety of molds.

Minion marshmallows and chocolate-covered pretzels make a sweet gift for family and friends.

ENGINEERING Advanced Robotics

Offered by: No Ordinary Summer Camp Ages: 7-12 Cost: $152 This camp is for campers who have taken the Intro to Robotics camp or have a basic understanding of what robotics is all about. Advanced Robotics will allow campers to learn the next stages of electronics, robotics, and programming all by building & creating their own take home robot.

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 8-11 Cost: $200 Calling all inventors, builders and designers! Come build some awesome creations with us. Campers will create their own designs and make structures using building blocks, recyclable materials, and many other interesting items.

Builders in Training

Offered by: Little Scholars Ages: 4-7 Cost: $160 Do you have a young engineer? If so, this camp is for them! They will imagine & create their own projects, while constructing with blocks, recyclables, and other building materials. Your young builder will also work with other campers to problem solve and collaborate through teamwork.

DaVinci Inventions

Offered by: Ellen Loflin Ages: 7-12 Cost: $190 Artist, scientist, engineer, architect…. all of these words can be used to describe Leonardo da Vinci. This returning camp explores the massive world of da Vinci inventions from the self-propelled cart to helicopter to diving suit. Campers examine da Vinci’s blueprints and learn about the intricacies of engineering design. Then they delve into their imaginations to come up with inventions of their very own. Campers will create detailed blueprints to use to build models of their inventions.

Intro to Robotics

Offered by: No Ordinary Summer Camp Ages: 7-10 Cost: $190 This camp teaches the true meaning of robotics and the basics of the robot world. Campers learn about artificial intelligence and how robots are being used in industries today, gain an understanding of robot mechanics, the different parts of a robot, and then design their own concept. A different robot will be built each day; Friday’s robot is theirs to keep!

What could be more fun than learning, building and playing with LEGO® Duplo models, singing songs, learning rhymes and making crafts using ABC’s and 123’s? Each day campers will practice essential skills such as counting, letter recognition, colors, phonics, and fine motor skills.

LEGO®: Extreme Ninjas

Offered by: Bricks 4 Kidz Ages: 6-10 Cost: $190 In this action-packed camp, kids will build motorized and brick LEGO models, compete in Spinjitzu tournaments, show off their building skills and take on new challenges as we journey through the world of LEGO Ninjago and other popular ninjas. Imagination & creativity will abound as campers build cool models, customize battle arenas, tools, vehicles and more!

Have your camper spend the week learning about animals from the jungle to the farm, build their favorite animals with LEGO Duplos, play themed games, and sing songs while practicing fun and essential preschool skills including letter recognition, colors, counting and fine motor skills.

LEGO®: Let’s Go to the Movies

Offered by: Bricks 4 Kidz Ages: 3-5 Cost: $190 Campers will learn, build and play with LEGO Duplos bringing their favorite movie characters to life through hands-on learning, singing songs, making crafts and more. Children will enjoy different movie scenes and characters each day – such as exploring the ocean with Nemo, getting Frozen with their favorite princesses, going to the Zoo with Zootopia, and more!

REGISTRATION Q. Where is Camp Cannon located?

A. Camp Cannon sessions are held at Cannon School, 5801 Poplar Tent Rd., Concord, NC. Any camps involving off-campus travel are noted in camp description.

Q. How do I register for a camp?

A. Camp Cannon registration opens on March 1, 2020. Online registration is highly encouraged to secure camp spots and is available via www.CampCannon.com. For paper registrations, complete forms A and B and mail/drop off at Cannon School with a minimum of 50% deposit via check or money order. Credit cards are accepted for online registrations only; payment by check must be received within 1 week of online registration.

Q. Why should I register early?

A. Each camp session has a minimum number of campers required to run the session, as well as a maximum number of campers who can be accepted. The number varies for each session. Some popular camps fill very shortly after registration opens. Others may cancel when student counts are too low to continue to hold registration open.

Q. When are payments due?

A. An initial 50% deposit is due at the time of registration to secure your child’s spot in a session. The remaining payment is due by May 10, 2020. Campers who have not paid in full are not permitted to attend camp sessions. Registrations after May 8, 2020 must be paid in full.

Q. What if a camp does not receive enough registrations?

A. If necessary to cancel a camp, we try to do so as early as possible, so there is an opportunity to select another session to attend. If Camp Cannon cancels the session due to low enrollment and no alternative session is chosen, a full refund will be given.

Q. What if I need to cancel?

A. Registration fees ($25) are non-refundable. Session deposits are fully refunded if the cancellation is made before May 1, 2020. On or after May 1, 2020, no refunds are offered. There are no exceptions.

Q. What if I want to change a session after registering?

A. Changes and transfers of registration are free of charge before May 1. On or after May 1, there is a $10 per transaction charge on all transfers that are not a result of a camp cancellation.

Thursday

Campers are given a snack break during each camp session. Campers may bring a snack from home or purchase from our camp store; items are 50 cents each. Campers staying through the lunch hour, 12 to 1 PM, (if indicated at the time of registration), may bring a packed lunch from home or may purchase hot lunch for the week through Camp Cannon. A different meal will be offered each day of the week, with a 2-week rotating menu. The cost is $26 per week per camper. Simply add the meal option to your week of camp at the time of registration. On Fridays, all campers staying through lunch for the week will receive pizza at no additional charge, regardless of the lunch option chosen for that week.
