EPD Vocabulary

Calving Ease Direct (CE) A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average difference in unassisted births with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW) The expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth.

Weaning Weight (WW) The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate.

Yearling Weight (YW) The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate.

Maternal Milk (Milk) The genetic ability of a sire’s or dam’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight in her calves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct and milk.

Scrotal Circumference (SC) The expected difference in scrotal circumference (expressed in centimeters) of a bull’s or dam’s male offspring at yearling compared to progeny of all other animals evaluated. Research has also indicated a relationship between increased SC EPD and decreased age at puberty for daughters.

Carcass Weight (CW) Carcass Weight EPD are expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight between parents progeny at an age constant endpoint.

Ribeye Area (REA) Ribeye area is a major component of the USDA yield grade equation and selection for increased ribeye area should result in larger ribeyes and lower yield grades between animals with the same carcass weight. Ribeye Area EPD are expressed in square inches.

Fat Thickness (FAT) Fat thickness is the primary component to the USDA Yield Grade equation. Fat thickness has a negative relationship to cutability; therefore, selection base on decreased fat thickness should result in lower yield grades and leaner cattle given the same age endpoint. Fat Thickness EPD are expressed in inches.

Marbling Score (MARB) Marbling is a subjective measure of the amount of intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Marbling score is the primary component of USDA Quality grade and selection for increased Marbling Score EPD should result in cattle with higher quality grades at the same age endpoints.

Terminal Sire Index (TSI) The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) – BW, WW, YW, REA, CW, MARB and FAT – into one single value on which to base selection decisions. .

The TSI represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced for a bull in the AICA database, ranking them for profit potential. This dollar index is to be interpreted much like single trait EPD. For example, if Sire A’s index is $191.66 and Sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return ($200.00 minus $191.66) than Sire A’s offspring.

Dear Cattleman,

Jen and I would like to cordially welcome you to our 12th annual bull sale. It’s with great pride that we offer the product of our operation. I greatly appreciate the interest and look forward to your appraisal.

I sort of did a double take that this is already our 12th installment. “Time Flies when you’re having fun” as the saying goes! As I think back through the years the thing that stands out to me is that we literally started from scratch with no real customer list to speak of. We have been very blessed with a savvy and loyal set of customers that have seen value in our genetics and rewarded us with an increase in average sales price each year since our first. I thoroughly enjoy my interactions with each and every one of you. Today there are a large number of folks I talk to on a weekly or monthly basis, not just as a customer, but because I truly enjoy their conversation and friendship. I am blessed with some wildly talented folks that choose to select bulls at CCR.

From a very early age I understood that if I am going to offer cattle genetics to the public, I am creating cattle that will affect an operations’ bottom line. I have the obligation to use all the tools at my disposal to create the most profitable genetics I can, but just as important, accurately measure, record and vet those genetics to maximize the positives and limit the negatives. I have leaned into a robust embryo transfer program, semen sexing capabilities, and DNA enhanced EPD’s as a means to both increase the number of elite cattle created, but also ensure a complete set of data. This data affords commercial producers the ability to select the genetics that best fit the goals of their program. As the sale comes and goes, please reach out if there’s anything I can do to assist your operation. As I write each and every year: I understand that bull buyers have a sea of places to buy a bull, I want to create an enjoyable experience during the selection process, but also stand behind this set of genetics every day of the year. Please reach out, I always love hearing from you!

Tom

We are very fortunate to lead off with a bull that checks nearly every box. A square built, tight sheathed, loose jointed, soft made, large testicular individual I’ve admired his entire existence. There is no other bull with his combination calving-ease, weaning, yearling, milk, scrotal, carcass weight, marbling and TSI. His donor dam is the 16th highest marbling EPD female in the entire Charolais population at 15 years of age with an accuracy of .26, which is highest in the top 20 ranked females. Her daughters rank as the top #3, 5, 6, and 13 for marbling! One of which, CCR 2660 was sought out by Leachman Cattle of Colorado and Clint Kathrien who purchased a 25% embryo interest this past summer. I am confident in this herd sire prospects ability to push the curve on multiple traits. For only the second time in our program’s history I am flushing donors to a bull prior to him being sold in our sale. We have collected a small bank of semen that can be available to the new owners on sale day. Retaining 1/3 semen interest.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the full brother Lots 1 through 3 is just the consistency to their type and kind. Lot 1 is the outlier of outliers, from there it’s just pure opinion or specific emphasis on a trait. There is a very slight variation in frame size, with lot 2 being more moderate, lot 3 being a pinch more extended and lot 1 landing in the middle. They come and go with so much dimension, mass and stoutness. All three are up headed, masculine in their build while giving us every indication that will sire middle of the road commercial birth weights. Lot 2’s .55 marbling EPD is in the top 1%!

A bull that just epitomizes my breeding goals from a mid-80 lb. birth weight, 861 weaning, 1419 at a year, ratio’s 118 for marbling while only having .18 hundredths back fat. While at the same time being attractive enough to catch anyone’s attention in the pasture. Quite an opportunity to own breed leading genetics for even the most discriminating cattleman.

Lot 5 will surely be one of, if not the highest numbered TSI bull to sell this spring sale season. He ranks as the 18th highest TSI and 13th for carcass weight in the breed at the January EPD run. His gentle nature makes him fun to be around. Maternal brothers were some of the most sought after lots in last year’s sale selling to some elite commercial and purebred operations throughout 5 different states. Retaining 1/3 semen interest.

Quite a set of numbers on this son of the terminal specialist Monticello. A -1.7 for birth coupled with elite levels of growth, red meat yield and marbling. His performance ratios tell the same story going 113 for both yearling and ribeye area. He will also be one of the highest TSI’s to sell this spring. Maternal brothers were selected last year by two of Nebraska’s really elite commercial operations.

This bull was raised on a co-op recipient herd and can be nervous in tight situations. Just an incredible EPD tabulation ranking four traits in the top 2% of the breed. A cumulative terminal sire index well over 300 in the top 2% of the population. He is big butted, and will sire a set of calves with vigor.

His donor dam isn’t a strong embryo producer so I put a few embryos in fresh at time of flushing resulting in an off aged bull too young to sell in last years offering. This would be a great opportunity to latch on to an older bull ready to service a few more cows his first year. He has a fun pedigree with the outcross KC Jack 0891 crossed with 1527, the mother to Monticello. 6 EPD traits in the top 8% of the breed.

Another bull that is a pinch older than his pen mates by way of an early embryo implant date. A really heavy muscled, good footed bull that will breed a lot of cows. He was very small at birth with high weights at both weaning and yearling time. 8 EPD categories in the top 35%.

Another full brother to breed legend Monticello. He is on the other end of our calving window ranking as the youngest fall born bull. His birth weight EPD ranks him among the smallest in the breed.

As we start into a set of five full brothers it would be an opportune time to tie several of them together to turn out in a breeding pasture for a very consistent uniform group of calves. The donor dam was a highlight of my 2022 female sale selling at 10 years of age for $15,000. Lot 11 has the good fortune of perfect ratios for every trait, ranking greater than the average for growth, muscle and marbling. While being below average for birth weight and exterior fat.

The marbling outlier in this set of brothers ratioing 121 at time of carcass ultrasound. His impressive EPD tabulation reads very high in the four areas I put a great deal of emphasis on, Birth, weaning, scrotal and marbling. His 284 TSI is very respectable, ranking him in the top 20%.

Just an awesome set of ratios. He weighted 10% more than the group mean for weaning, 8% higher at a year. His carcass ultrasound was just as great ratioing 109 for ribeye area, and a bonkers 128 for marbling. His genetics say he should have a lighter than average birth in the long run ranking lightest 30% for birth.

The last bull in this set of flush brothers, he was among the heaviest at weaning weighing nearly 700 pounds without creep feed. He has a very well-rounded set of data with healthy ratios on actual performance, and an equally impressive DNA story ranking high for low birth, high weaning and high carcass quality.

An awesome embryo transfer son of tried-and-true Free Lunch. His donor 6041, is one of the really great ones I have raised over the years. Herndon farms of Georgia selected her out of our 2022 cow sale as they built their breeding program. A maternal brother was a high-seller in last years offering. I love his powerful hip, bone mass, and masculine build though his front one-third of his body. His negative birth and top 20% TSI builds the confidence.

3645

Free Lunch’s ability to sire soggy made, easy-calving high carcass value cattle are why he continues to sire high-sellers 18 years after he was born. They were some of the most sought-after genetics in last year’s sale. This particular bull’s mother is a powerful specimen. Check out his low birth, and high carcass value EPD’s

Channel has been the go-to heifer specialist in the Schurrtop Charolais program for years. I appreciate his high growth ratios at weaning and a year. Even with his above average birth weight his EPD tabulation still estimates him as a top 25% calving ease sire.

An interesting combination of low birth, elite levels of growth and high carcass merit all wrapped into one package. He sports 8 EPD traits in the top 30%. His maternal grand dam 7160 was one of my all-time favorites. She always brought in a great one.

The vast majority of Monticello’s I have raised or seen have no where near this much physical pizzazz. We have to pay his donor damn some credit on this one. I really love this bull from end to end. He was a beautiful square hip, massive middle third, awesome structure and a front end that reads like a cattle feeding dream.

A light birth weight son of the LT Ballerina 1012 donor that achieved great success for the world renown Lindskov program. She has sons working in the 5L and Stranad purebred programs. I appreciate his moderate calving figures and big bodied soft design.

A small contemporary group didn’t allow this rascal to get his flowers for a huge 884 lb. weaning weight. He should have the ability to create a problem free set of calves with a -3.2 BW EPD and real-world performance. His sire, Authority is a proven calving ease and marbling specialist.
