Whether you are in the office, in the fab shop, or on the project site itself, you can impact the overall safety of a jobsite. Mental Health Awareness
1 in 5 construction workers struggle with anxiety, depression, and mental health issues. That means we must be able to see the signs of struggle that can impact one’s safety, productivity and so we know when to be there for one another.

Welcome our new 2022 Safety Committee. This year’s group was designed to consist of both tenured journeymen and office management who hold significant responsibility when it comes to the safety and successful completion of their projects.
Safety Committee Goals consist of developing new initiatives based off of past injuries, reviewing current safety documentation, developing a recognition program for the field to reward safe behaviors, and reviewing all safety incidents as they occur.

WHY I
To kick off 2022 we asked everyone to ask themselves one question: Why do you work safe? This question can mean something different to each person, but it holds more weight than you think. Most people work safe for their family, to go home at the end of the day and be able to see and enjoy loved ones. Others work safe so they can save up for retirement or put their kids through school. No matter what it is, the end goal is to leave the jobsite or office every day the same way that you came in.
Working safely and professionally allows you to do those things you want to do outside of work life. To keep you healthy and active so you can enjoy retirement or spend time with your children. We want to challenge everyone to continue to ask yourself each day...

IT UPDATE forecasting (ctc) application
The Forecasting (CTC) Application has digitalized and standardized the Cost to Complete (CTC) process for Project Managers.
Project Managers now have a centralized location that contains all of their projects where they can complete CTC worksheets as well as generate and submit coversheets.
The application aims to:
• Increase communication
• Reduce the need for paper
• Make the CTC process easier and faster for Project Managers
• Generate timely financial data
• Organize the data and make it readily available to the Project Manager
The Forecasting (CTC) Application is currently available for all Project Managers. It is located in CMiC-PM under the Apex folder.
Labor Projections Application
New Feature: Scoreboard
The labor projections application is getting a new scoreboard to help project managers see their projected labor costs versus actual labor costs over time.
The different scoreboards will track metrics by job and by project manager. Metrics used are: standard deviation, mean absolute percent error, and the median absolute percent error. The goal of the scoreboard is to encourage more accurate projections, and to act as a helpful tool to see how well labor has been projected over a period of time. This page in the application is expected to go live by the end of May.

What is the mission of the Learning and Development Program?
We don’t have a formal statement, but from my perspective, it is to invest in the learning needs of our employees through a commitment to train and develop their craft, with the goal of retaining and growing our talent and developing future leaders so JCC employees are best in class.
How can one be involved? Who participates in the trainings (field, too?)
Managers are encouraged to contact L&D if they identify a training need. If employees would like to request a specific training, they should have a conversation with their manager and then their manager should contact L&D.
Once L&D is notified of a potential training need, we work with the manager to determine the appropriate course of action –whether it’s leveraging an external training resource or developing the training internally in collaboration with a subject matter expert.
We have run trainings for both office and field staff, though our primary focus currently is training content for office-based employees who work in project management, coordination, or manage people. Next, we will collaborate with IT to rollout technology-focused trainings to more foremen and other field crews.
What got you interested in growing this department, or working in this field?
After a decade working in education and workforce development for youth and young adults, I decided I wanted to switch to corporate learning and development. In my last role, I oversaw career services and industry partnerships at a technical college with a variety of programs, including mechanical engineering technology, construction management, electrical technology, and HVAC&R. In addition to helping connect our students to employment in fields related to their areas of study, I also helped build workforce training programs for the employees of local companies. This is the work that got me interested in the field of construction management and how I learned of J.C. Cannistraro.
I’m passionate about building access to opportunity for people, and I see the field of L&D as central to helping companies grow their workforce and carve out transparent career pathways for their employees. After conversations with the Cannistraro family, it was clear that this is their long-term vision for what L&D (and what we’re calling “Cannistraro Academy”) will become, and while we have a lot of work to do reach that vision, I’m excited to build toward that.

PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE

Cannistraro’s Special Projects Group (SPG) has been doing especially great work, and it is showing in their numbers! For this edition of Gangbox Gazette, we asked Ken Reagan, Vice President of SPG, to tell us more about what makes SPG projects so special.
Marketing: Tell us about what makes an SPG job different from other main construction work.
Ken Reagan: It’s a lot of repeat business and relationship building with the same customers. If we do well on one job, we go right into negotiating the next one.
SPG projects are also unique in that they are fast tracked – you win the job and you could be in the field the next day. We have a team in the office and in the field that can respond to the fast-paced construction, and that’s what we’re really good at.
Who are some of the major clients that we are working with?
We have a huge presence at all the hospitals – Boston Children Hospitals, Fagan 8 and 10, Tufts Medical, the list goes on – but MGH is where we do the most work, often in all four trades. We’re also seeing a lot of wins on the lab side with Vertex and Takeda, who are two of our biggest partners in SPG work right now. Because SPG is such a customer-focused type of work, our success is a testament to the Cannistraro teams on each of these jobs.

Ingredients
Dressing:
1 cup white vinegar
¼ cup sugar
¾ cup ketchup
1 tsp salt, ¼ tsp pepper
juice of 1 lemon
Salad:
1 lb. macaroni shells or elbows
3 stalks of chopped celery
1 chopped red or Vidalia onion
1 chopped green pepper
2 chopped pimentos
Chopped fresh parsley to taste
Optional Additions:
Can of crabmeat or shrimp
½ tsp paprika cup mayo
1 tsp sugar
Step 1
Combine dressing ingredients in a jar and shake well. Refrigerate for at least one day.
Step 2
Cook 1 lb. macaroni shells or elbows and soak in dressing overnight.
Step 3
Combine macaroni with the remainder of the salad ingredients, along with any of the optional additions that you’d like. Mix well and refrigerate until serving.

Art for Ukraine
Sasha Parfenova, local artist and longtime Cannistraro employee, created a special piece to share light and inspire hope amidst the violence in Ukraine. We will be selling prints and greeting cards featuring this piece with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit that responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and is currently on the ground providing emergency assistance to Ukrainian refugees.
