MESSAGE FROM THE CANNISTRARO’S
the results are in!
Dave, Joe, and John Cannistraro
Earlier this month, we sent a survey to all office employees with questions to help inform Cannistraro’s upcoming move from our Watertown offices to a new suburban office space. Thank you to all who completed this survey. We had 191 responses, which is really fantastic. For this newsletter, we wanted to highlight four of the questions and associated answers (see graphs on page 3). We take your opinion seriously and will use the feedback gained from the results to make a best possible decision regarding our future location.
The following are just a few of our key takeaways from these results:

• 66% of responders work from home 1 or more days per week.
• Preference regarding location is very close. Within the locations listed in question #4, our top priority will be to select a building that is convenient to get in and out of Boston and is close to major highways.
• Most prefer a shared office to individual offices.
You can view the complete survey results HERE on the Intranet. Thank you again for your participation. We will continue to update the company as our search continues.

Q1: On a scale of 1 to 5, please rank which of these places is most desirable (1) to least desirable (5) for you to work.
Q2: What is your commute time (oneway) to the Watertown office?
Q4: How many days a week are you in the office?

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU!
The results are in and Cannistraro’s 2021-2022 experience modification rate (EMR) is .81!
From our Safety Director
Matt Gifford
We are approaching the final quarter of 2021 and looking to finish the year out strong. Summer has come and gone. With the holiday season upon us it’s the perfect time to re-focus our efforts on making sure everyone goes home safe each day. The holidays are a time of joy and family, but also stressful for some. This mixture of emotions can be distracting, whether we
realize it or not, and unintentionally cause us to lose sight of our daily tasks. Ultimately, distractions cause injuries and injuries cause hardships. We want everyone to be safe and healthy to enjoy the holiday season, and it starts with everyone making the commitment to focusing each day and looking out for others. Take time to mentor someone, make a corrective action on a jobsite or a
update on safety committee
The FID’s very own Safety Committee is underway with meetings and subsequent safe improvements. We have developed a formal inspection process for The FID, and a system for hazard identification, reporting, and corrective action. The committee meets monthly onsite to discuss current safety issues and review
previous inspection violations which can be communicated back to the shop. A big thank you to The FID Safety Committee members: Brian Janiak, Sean Sullivan, John Joyce III, and Jim Evans.
The company-wide Safety Committee is currently looking for

2021 Year in Numbers
Planning for Safety, Efficiency Follows
John Cannistraro
We often talk about the importance of proactive planning to safety and productivity in the field, but did you know, there is a studied and proven correlation between these three factors?
As reported by the MCAA, a recent study sponsored by the Construction Industry Workforce Foundation found that proactive implementation of safety and training systems in a construction firm results in:
• 17-percent increase of productivity
• 9-percent reduction in turnover and absenteeism
• A decrease in workers losing interest in their jobs
These metrics are clear: proactive and planned safety measures are critical to overall employee wellbeing, engagement, and project success. It is also important to note that productivity is not about how fast you can
work, it is about the project planning we implement to enable onsite effficency. When our tradespeople in the field have accurate drawings, well-organized and welllabeled stock, and the proper tools that they need to work in a safe and organized manner, productivity will follow. Every day planning for safety in the office, is a day serving the men and women working in the field.
Thank you for everyone’s hard work and diligence in response to more stringent COVID safety measures. The Intranet now features a master document with all the latest information regarding our COVID policy and related protocols. Check it out under Quicklinks on the homepage.

the future of construction modeling is here!
Kurt Noelte & April Covington
Mechanical contracting is in the midst of massive transformation. Digital design tools, collaboration, and computer-managed fabrication are all coming together to transform every phase of the construction process. These advancements are enabled by BIM (Building Information Modeling): the means by which everyone — architect, engineers, client, suppliers, builders, environmental managers — can understand a building through the use of a digital model. Did you know: BIM has been standard to Cannistraro’s coordination process since 1999!
Our Move to Revit
Cannistraro is in an exciting transition, integrating Revit as our standard coordination software. You could view Revit as an evolution of AutoCAD (the software that we currently use). The move from AutoCAD will take some time, but will bring us onto “the cloud” with our project partners, and into the future of BIM.
What is Revit?
Revit is a Construction Modeling software used by Architects and Engineers. It is becoming our customer’s preferred design tool because it enables everyone to work together in the cloud, on the same model.
Layout modifications and clashes are managed automatically in the background by Revit. For example, if a plumbing change overlaps with HVAC installations, Revit can detect the clash immediately and notify the designers.
The Benefits over AutoCAD:
• When designing with AutoCAD, an architectural change may require modifications in dozens of 2D plans.
• Unlike AutoCAD, Revit is a single project file which multiple users work within. All changes are simultaneously synced when saving the file. This is a major advantage of Revit, and project documents can be completed faster.
• Project Calculations: To pull necessary data from an AutoCAD drawing, you will need to manually calculate quantities by meticulously writing them down or entering them into a spreadsheet. Revit automatically calculates and compiles this data for you.
Proposed Revit Rollout Schedule:
• September 2021 – Peer group meetings focused on BIM and Revit
• October 2021 – Initial guru testing to be completed
• November 2021 – Start “Revit” based projects
Current Impacts:
• Autodesk software 2020 installs
• Guru testing and continuous improvements to fabrication database and project setup

Mentorship opportunity!
Give Back to the Next Generation
We now have seven Cannistraro employees signed up as mentees in the Big Brother Big Sister Mentorship 2.0 Program. Thank you, volunteers! Haven’t signed up yet? There’s still time, the deadline for 2022 volunteers is November 1, 2021.
In case you missed it: Cannistraro is partnering with Big Brother Big Sister of Eastern Massachusetts (BBSMEM) to connect Cannistraro employees to the Mentorship 2.0 Program. This program matches mentors with high school students from Madison Park Technical High School. BBSMEM is particularly looking for mentors with careers in the trades, whether in the field/shop or in the office, to pair with students from Madison Park. BBSMEM organizes the communication and events with your
mentee… all you need to do is show up and be yourself! It will make a BIG difference for your mentee.

Art Installation Brings Beauty to Watertown Office
A new art installation is in full bloom between 313 Pleasant Street and the overflow parking lot. What was once a simple electrical box has been transformed by the collage work of artist and Cannistraro employee, Sasha Parfenova. Sasha finds inspiration in nature for her designs, and typically creates pillows, scarves, and prints featuring her work. This is her first public and outdoor installation. If you haven’t already, stop by the installation and take a closer look. Thank you, Sasha, for sharing your beautiful art with us!

Cannistraro team members run boston
Congratulations to runners, Ashley Holmes and Joe Cannistraro, for their participation in the October Boston Marathon!
This was Ashley’s second marathon (she ran virtual Boston last year), and she raised over $8,400 for Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Way to go, Ashley!!
Joe Cannistraro is a lifelong marathoner, and this marks his 27th time running Boston. In his words: the history and the excitement of the Boston Marathon never get old.
Join us in congratulating both Ashley and Joe on this amazing accomplishment!
