We have recently been doing a lot of work to ensure that Canford’s Vision, Mission and Values are as clearly articulated as possible so we can continue to build on the work started in 1923 by Canford’s Founder, the Reverend Percy Warrington.

His aim was ‘to fit boys to take their place in the battle of life and develop their character in every way’.

Our vision states, we are ‘A school community where all are inspired to explore, empowered to express and challenged to excel’. Each day I have the privilege of engaging with young people who turn those words into a reality, supported wholeheartedly by Canford’s fantastic teaching and support staff. The many and varied high profile achievements within our school community make me feel extremely proud, yet alongside them I am equally heartened by the small things which so often go unrecognised; the individual acts of kindness of one pupil towards another, the encouragement and support of our community, picking each other up when we fall down.

HEADMASTER Building a community of open-minded people who are motivated to embrace learning in all its forms, and who are committed to making a difference to their own lives, and to the lives of others takes continual love, care and effort. Similarly ensuring our exceptional education grants freedom to grow and creates opportunities for all to explore, to express and to excel requires thorough planning and wholehearted dedication to ensure that dreams can become realities.

We support members of our community to be bold in expressing thoughts, words and deeds yet respectful of the diversity in our world and society. In an often selfish world we promote HUMBLE AMBITION where pursuit of goals without arrogance or complacency brings meaningful success. We challenge members of our community to be energetic and resilient in pursuit of their goals but honest and grateful for fulfilment of them. Underpinning all of this is a need for GRACIOUS LEADERSHIP where fulfilling a duty to guide, support and include others makes a difference. We urge members of our community to lead graciously and serve willingly for the greater good.

The desire and imperative to open up wider access to this amazing and life-changing educational environment is a fundamental focus of our energies at Canford, and it is critical that we can offer financial support to enable this to happen ever more extensively. Whilst we are looking to offer such opportunities to deserving young people at all entry points, we can often make the greatest difference to more young people through Sixth Form entry and our future school development plans have a strong focus on creating more flexible capacity to meet this need.

KACPER KAZANIECKI - studying for a MEng in Computing at Imperial College London, achieved a recent placement at Huawei and is being mentored by OC Alexander Trewby.

MICHAEL BRYAN - studying International Relations & History at London School of Economics. He also took part in the telethon and has volunteered in several refugee camps during his holidays.

POPPY PINNER - degree apprenticeship at Goldman Sachs which allows participants to complete an apprenticeship in their Technology division while studying for a degree at Queen Mary’s, University of London.

MADDY DIMENT – studying Geography at St Catherine’s, Oxford, President of Project SOUP and campaigner for gender equality with UNWomen Oxford.

These young people will make a real and positive difference to wider society, as they did when they were pupils here, and we hope very much that we will be able to support others like them in times to come.

News from the

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Welcome to a refreshing new look to our annual report.

It is important that I start by saying a huge thank you to everyone involved in the Canford Community who support what we do in so many different ways. Putting this publication together at the end of the calendar year only serves to highlight how busy we’ve been but in turn how much involvement and encouraging participation we’ve had from you. Each and every one of you are an important part of our community and we appreciate all that you do.

The Martin Marriott Foundation is now well-established and we are pleased to report that the number of pupils in receipt of transformational bursaries is gradually increasing. There are so many aspects of my role that I enjoy, bringing Old Canfordians together years after leaving, touring the grounds with OCs and hearing about their memories, but talking with bursary pupils just before they leave Canford is equally rewarding. They really do appreciate the wonderful education that they have been afforded and are determined to succeed beyond Canford and make the very most of their opportunity.

Pupil Leaders were introduced in place of School Prefects in 2018. Their roles are quite specific and I have been fortunate to have three assigned to the Development Department. In the last two years I have enjoyed working with them on a variety of tasks. They were instrumental in introducing and organising the first whole school fundraising event in aid of the Martin Marriott Foundation and have learnt a lot by being involved in our work with OCs by hosting some events and learning about the work that we do with our alumni.

The launch of Canford Global Connect has seen a lot of OCs reconnect online and network in a variety of ways. In April when attending a dinner in New York, kindly hosted

by Graham Arader B69, one of our younger OCs studying at the University of Columbia had already connected with a fellow OC based in New York via Canford Global Connect.

They came along to the dinner together and were talking about possible future collaborations and work experience.

The platform is a powerful tool and becomes more so as the number of participants increases, so do have a look and join the network. www.canfordglobalconnect.com Our 50 Years of Co-education celebrations has seen us launch the #Fiftyfor50 campaign on social media, posting OC memories each week for 50 weeks. These have been followed by many and well received. In April 2020 we will celebrate with an OC Day of Arts for the whole family and our OC London Drinks Party in June will conclude our celebrations.

We welcome Lauren Sewell to the Development Team who started in September. Lauren is now working full-time at Canford dividing her time between the Development Office and the Careers and Higher Education department.

LOOKING AFTER CANFORD’S PAST AND BUILDING ITS FUTURE “No one who has known Canford over the years can be unaffected by its beauty. The Victorian house with its Great Hall and Long Gallery, the towers, the sunken lawns, the mediaeval splendours of John o’ Gaunt’s, the gravel paths, balustrade and rose walk, Canford Park stretching to the Bournemouth Road with Canford Heath beyond, the glories of Mountjoy and the playing fields, the trees, Mountjoy Oak and Spanish Chestnut and Wellingtonia, the river, suspension bridge and mill pool, all these evoke the fondest of memories.” HENRY BAYNHAM & ROBIN WHICKER, “A PORTRAIT OF CANFORD 1923-1998” The Independent Schools of the United Kingdom certainly have more than their fair share of impressive old buildings and heritage assets, many purpose-built over the centuries for the education of children and others developed and adapted from the grand houses and residential estates built for the aristocracy and wealthy merchants. Canford is, of course, no exception - with the magnificent Blore-designed and Barrymodified Manor House being the very heart of the School ever since its inception in 1923. Canford might not have the imposing scale of some of the country’s more ancient public schools such as Charterhouse, Eton, or Christ’s Hospital, but it would be very hard to argue that there is a more attractive school setting anywhere in the land.

The appeal of Canford’s physical site is much more about the way in which the Grade-1 listed building sits within and

integrates with its surroundings than it is about sheer size; more about simple, high-quality functionality and a genuinely warm, homely and inviting feel than it is about dramatic award-winning architectural form. Although the Manor House is certainly the primus inter pares of Canford’s assets, it is simultaneously balanced and enhanced by the natural treerich parkland and modern educational buildings alike and no single aspect of the site dominates unduly. Canford is perhaps the very embodiment of the notion that the whole is much greater than just the sum of its parts.

It would be all too easy to take this understated and all-butperfect beauty for granted, but keeping Canford’s site at the top of its game in the 21st Century is a complex affair made even more tricky by a number of legislative constraints: The most well-known of these is the Grade-1 listing of the 5

Manor House, John o’Gaunt’s Kitchen and the Pierced Stone Screen that connects the main building to the Nineveh porch.

Only 2.5% of all listed buildings are Grade-1 listed.These buildings are of exceptional architectural and historic interest and there are significant restrictions on what can be done to them and how they can be maintained. In almost all cases, any proposed changes to these buildings require listed building consent from the local planning authority who are advised by an organisation called Historic England. Work carried out without such consent could well be deemed a criminal act. Furthermore, the law says that the listed building also includes any ancillary object or structure within the curtilage of the building, which forms part of the land and has done so since before 1st July, 1948. So, many of our buildings such as the Assembly Hall and the Monteacute/Wimborne building and structures such as the balustrade and the Sunken Lawn, although not listed in their own right, are covered by listed building curtilage regulations.The curtilage is the area of land and other buildings that is around and associated with that principal building – in Canford’s case, this effectively means the whole of the school site.

The second area of legislative constraint lies in the fact that Canford is situated in an area designated as part of the South East Dorset Green Belt.There are only 14 separate areas of Green Belt in England covering just 12.4% of the country.

Development on Green Belt is tightly controlled unless there are exceptional circumstances to justify it. In general, the creation of new buildings, or the significant extension of existing ones, is incompatible with Green Belt regulations.

The entire Canford site is also covered by an Area Tree Protection Order.This prevents the cutting down, topping, lopping, uprooting or otherwise damaging of any trees with a trunk diameter greater than 7.5cm (approximately the width of an adult’s palm) without the local planning authority’s written consent. Importantly, the cutting of roots also requires consent and the root protection zones so created can be areas of up to 30 metres in diameter. This can severely restrict where construction can take place and how underground services such as gas, water and fibre optic cables can be routed.

Finally, large parts of the Canford site also lie within the Canford Magna Conservation Area. Conservation Areas, which cover 2.2% of England, are designated areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. In practice this brings additional planning controls and considerations into play such as limiting the changes to the outside appearance of buildings or additional controls on materials used for new build projects.

The team charged with navigating this veritable spider’s web of rules and regulations, whilst simultaneously acting as guardians of the School’s past, maintaining all the infrastructure required to house, feed, shelter, educate and entertain 650 pupils, 400 staff and large numbers of external visitors in the present and ensuring that Canford can evolve and remain competitive in the inevitably competitive and contemporary environment of the future is led by Director of Estates, Andrew Bruce.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE

Since 2013, Andrew has been leading a comprehensive review of the entire site with the aim of providing a Site Development Masterplan that outlines a vision of the physical development on the Canford site required to support the School’s educational and pastoral needs.That document, published in 2018, took into account the views of a huge range of stakeholders and has been agreed by the Local Planning Authority and Historic England as the basis for planning at Canford into the medium term.

KEY FEATURES

Now that Governors have approved a strategic plan for the School over the next 10 years or so, Andrew and his team have been able to develop more detailed plans of how that plan can be brought to fruition whilst complying with the principles set out in the site masterplan. Much of the detailed work around the new build projects that will be needed is being carried out by the School’s capital projects manager, Tristan Hutton, an Old Canfordian (L05) who has returned to the area with his ever-growing family (he has celebrated the birth of a son and a daughter since joining us a little over a year ago!)

The first of those projects is the provision of a new library and improvements to the assembly hall that will allow the whole school to congregate in one place for the first time in many years. Planning permission for the project, which will be built on the site of the current Combined Cadet Force building, has been granted and work on this will start early in 2020. To make way for the library, a new Outdoor Education Centre is being built adjacent to the newly refurbished assault course on Franklin Field.

Drawing on our success and the fantastic support of the Canford Community in the last three years, our Annual Fund goal for 2020 is £76,000. This figure will fund a Royal SpringBoard pupil for their first two years at Canford. ‘A Mother’s Perspective’ (article on p11) helps to highlight the difference that transformational bursarial support can make to young people attending Canford from a deprived and disadvantaged background. The idea of our Annual Fund is to encourage donors to make small but regular monthly or quarterly contributions or a one-off donation each year.

BURSARY RECIPIENTS

Michael

At the end of the Summer Term, I always meet with pupils who have been in receipt of a bursary and are about to leave Canford. It is really important for our donors to know what a difference this opportunity has made to these young people. I have to admit that this part of my role is among the most rewarding. Fundraising can be very challenging but hearing from pupils who have benefited from the hard work put in by so many at the school and the wider Canford Community is a real pleasure.

Michael joined Canford as an enthusiastic Sixth Former in Lancaster House. He completed his application to Canford on his own as his father is deceased and his mother is chronically ill – Michael is her sole carer. His drive to come to Canford was to aim to get superb A Level results to allow him to attend a top university. He was delighted when contacting Canford to understand that it wasn’t a myth and financial support may be available for the right candidate. Following entrance tests, Michael was awarded a scholarship and bursary place providing 100% financial support.

Connor Connor came to Canford from St Michael’s and was particularly attracted to the school because of the academic rigour. He felt very overwhelmed by Canford at Open Day but was made to feel incredibly welcome and both the teachers and pupils were very approachable. He applied and sat all of the entrance tests knowing that there would only be a slight chance that he would be able to attend as considerable financial support would be required.

“I remember the day very clearly when the Canford letter arrived! To realise that I had been offered a place with a bursary was totally amazing and all of us jumped around the room! My mum was so happy and proud.

The academic level blew me away. I could never have considered a career in medicine if I hadn’t attended Canford. I have also discovered a passion for Real tennis. In 2018 it was a privilege to play with HRH Prince Edward when he visited – beyond my wildest dreams! The opportunities I have been exposed to have completely changed my future. “ Connor achieved excellent ‘A’ Level results and is reading Medicine at Imperial College London.

He studied Economics, History, Politics, English and AS Maths. When we spoke in the summer, he was holding offers from the University of Columbia and was waiting for a response from Harvard and Yale. His most likely university destination would be the London School of Economics to study History and International Relations with Russian and Arabic. (He was not too keen to be far from his mother so a long term international placement was unlikely to be taken up.)

“The academic rigour is second to none, lessons are dynamic, challenging, and positive.

You are encouraged to be enquiring and ask questions. The teachers are incredibly patient and attentive. I have delved far deeper into my subjects than I could have imagined possible. I have developed new interests eg Heretics and have explored new subjects. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the John O’Gaunt Debating Society and taking part in new sports. My horizons and mindset have been broadened considerably.”

At the end of his Lower Sixth year, Michael set up an overseas trip which included a congressional internship with the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Following on from this he went to the Stanford Humanities Institute at Stanford University being involved with their MIT LaunchX, spent time with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a business development programme and concluded with a Cabinet 9

Relations Internship with the Office of the Governor of Massachusetts. He was also invited to deliver a speech to youth delegates at the UN Youth Assembly on the subject of global equality to a conference of UNDP officials. He received an academic scholarship for both of the universityrelated programmes and raised some money himself to cover his flights. A sizeable proportion of his visit was funded by a Dr Michael Toosey grant from Canford, (set up by an OC wishing to support pupils on bursaries.) Not exactly an average 17 year old’s summer holiday!

“I have made great friends at Canford and the support network that surrounds us as pupils is fantastic and makes all aspects of life less daunting.”

Whilst at Canford, Michael worked with the Development Office as a Pupil Leader for Philanthropy and helped to set up Canford’s first whole school fundraising event in aid of the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries. Michael spent the week between finishing his A Levels and Speech Day in the South Sudan volunteering for IOM (International Organisation for Migration). Just two days after Speech Day, Michael was back at Canford again taking part in the telethon, calling OCs to talk about news and life at Canford as well as inviting OCs to support the Martin Marriott Foundation.

“Receiving a bursary to attend Canford has been a life changing experience and has made such a difference to me. It is not just about the two years Sixth Form education that I have received, it has changed my whole perspective and opened up an incredibly valuable network.

I fully support what the school is doing to support young people like myself and I am keen to give back and help whenever I am able to.”

Fizzie Fizzie came to Canford on an arts scholarship with significant bursary support.

Following a serious accident, Fizzie’s father is unable to work so her family is financially supported solely by her mother, meaning that a bursary was essential for a place at Canford. As a boarder, Canford quickly became home from home and her life has felt very settled and stable. She was always keen to return after the holidays. Fizzie has dyslexia so smaller classes and additional learning support have been very important for her progress. Attending the school has given her opportunities to take part in things she would not have had the chance to at a different school for example, the CCF trip to Norway, a visit to Rome and taking part in the Argentina partnership trip to an orphanage at the end of her Lower Sixth year.

“The Art department has been amazing in both resources on offer and teachers who have endless ideas when helping with my work. I developed a love of Classical Civilisations - something I had never encountered before Canford. I have taken part in dance and learnt the cello and played Lacrosse representing Canford’s 1st team.

I received round the clock support when needed which has been invaluable.”

“Canford is small enough to know everyone and you really do feel that you are part of a meaningful community.”

As a Pupil Leader for Philanthropy Fizzie was enthusiastic and instrumental in bringing together the first whole school fundraising event – a Colour Run in aid of the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries.

She was challenged by a few contemporaries who asked why they should raise money for bursaries and her brave response was – “if it wasn’t for a bursary, I wouldn’t be here!”

BURSARIES

FUTURE BURSARY RECIPIENTS Finding the right pupils for our bursary programme is vital. Once a place has been offered at Canford any pupil may apply for a Bursary, some may be Scholars, others may not be. The level that we award varies according to individual circumstance and families have to demonstrate a genuine need. Canford works closely with partnership organisations and has developed excellent relationships in order to identify and select pupils who will benefit from a bursary. Our partners include The Bourne Academy, HMC European, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy and the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation (Royal SpringBoard).

Royal SpringBoard is the UK’s largest boarding school bursary charity, providing life-transforming opportunites for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in 90 independent and state boarding schools. The charity seeks to select suitable pupils from econmically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds who would benefit from a

A Mother’s Perspective “I have always been keen for my boys to get a good start in life and a good education, but also to learn how to behave well, engage positively with other people and seek out a good career for themselves. For me to instil this was difficult to achieve on my own given our local environment. To help improve their life skills I sent them to East Side Young Leaders’ Academy which offers after school and Saturday activities. It was here that I found out about SpringBoard and the possibility of a bursary place at a boarding school. I knew that a boarding education could help them to escape the cycle, increase their aspirations and place them on a good footing for the future.

They worked hard but I did have to push them as they weren’t initially keen and could not see the benefits.

When the possibility of a place became available we visited Canford and stayed overnight. It was so quiet and dark and we were not at all sure that we liked it. However, I knew in my heart that this would be a brilliant opportunity for my son if he could just get used to it. It was a real culture shock but I persuaded him that this was the right thing to do. Now at the end of the Christmas holidays, after just two years at Canford, my son is bored at home and can’t wait to get back on the train to school!

Whilst ensuring that such children will be academically able to thrive, we do not see just the most able or talented, but those who stand to gain most from, and contribute to a boarding education. Once at Canford, there is subtle but additional pastoral care in place for bursary pupils to ensure that their transition to Canford is smooth and enables them to thrive. In addition, Royal SpringBoard provide support to pupils in their home environment during holiday periods.

Canford has been a Royal SpringBoard partner since 2016 when we welcomed the first bursary recipient into the Shells.

We now have four Royal SpringBoard pupils at Canford.

It was hard when he first went as he was away for long periods of time and I missed him and also the help he would provide for me at home but I have got used to it now and my heart is at peace as I know he is in a good place but I still look forward to the holidays.

I have seen a lot of changes in my son. The first change that was evident was his lifestyle choices. He was not interested at all in sport and exercise before and in fact to start with when he went to Canford, I was concerned that he was not eating enough! However, I was reassured by his Housemaster that he was eating plenty of good healthy food but was also taking part in so much exercise and also using the gym. Having watched his peers at Canford, he was keen to join in and is now a keen sportsman. Another change that I noticed early on was the effect that he is having on his friends when he returns home. None of his friends had ever heard of boarding school and had no idea what it was like. They all ask when he’ll be back and they are so keen to know what he has been doing and what his plans are. It is really evident that he is helping them to understand what is achievable and what other opportunities there are outside of their community. He is becoming a role model within our local community which works to inspire others but also places some responsibility on him to work hard, do well and make the most of this opportunity.”

THE COLOUR RUN To raise awareness of the Martin Marriott Foundation amongst Canfordians we decided to organise a fun, whole school fundraising event. As Development Director, I am fortunate enough to be assigned three Pupil Leaders and their first task was to ask other pupils what type of event they would like to take part in. Without hesitation, the majority wanted to do a Colour Run. For those not in the know, this is a fun run where at intervals, coloured powder is thrown over you! At the end, this results in runners being completely multi-coloured.

The Pupil Leaders did research on where to source the materials, created advertising and encouraged pupils to take part by promoting the event in assembly. We decided that we could open up the run to parents and other members of the Canford Community which coincided nicely with some ‘at home’ events.

The photographs speak for themselves and a great time was had by all! Over 200 people took part and the event raised £1,261 for the MMF and Cancer Research.

THE CANFORD ONLINE AUCTION

DR MICHAEL TOOSEY AWARDS

The Canford online auction is now in its third year. In the Christmas Term we ask members of the Canford Community to donate prizes, experiences and money can’t buy opportunities for us to auction online. The auction provided another opportunity for Pupil Leaders to get involved and to understand the organisation behind this type of activity.

Dr Michael Toosey was a charismatic man who had very fond memories of Canford. He was most generous in donating a significant sum of money to enable Canfordians in receipt of a bursary to access all that Canford has to offer by providing additional financial assistance for activities that might be financially unobtainable.

We are very grateful to some donors who every year have offered an auction prize. Special thanks goes to our Pupil Leaders and regular donors, Jeremy de Halpert F65, Martin Clunes, Glen Elie, Fi Boyle, Charlotte Williams B05, Chris Scudds, Charles Fulton, LoveLove Films, Charlie Williamson L00, Keith Hay and our regular sponsor, PKF Francis Clark.

The total amount raised this year was £13,760 surpassing previous years. Celia Sawyer, current Canford parent, who attended the King’s High School, now The Bourne Academy, offered her villa in Barbados for a week to be auctioned and for proceeds to be given to The Bourne Foundation. This lot alone raised £3,200 and we were delighted to be able to facilitate this for our partner school.

THE FUNDRAISING BOARD The Fundraising Board is a small group who meet 3-4 times a year to discuss fundraising at Canford. They are very much a sounding board for how we conduct our activities and provide useful discussion and feedback. Those involved are parents and OCs and special thanks are offered to Stephen Allen, Barry Coupe F70, Ben Davies S88, Mike Jeffries, Nigel Still and Andrew Featherstone for their support over the past few years together with new members David Smith and Russell Lucas-Rowe S81 who joined in the Christmas Term of 2019.

THE 2019 TELETHON For the first time in five years, Canford recent leavers took part in a telethon during the first two weeks of July. Eleven Old Canfordians finished their Canford education, enjoying Speech Day and the Summer Ball on Friday 28th June and then started work for Canford just 3 days later on Monday 1st July! They were joined by two other OCs from 2017/18 and began telephoning OCs to talk with them about their time at Canford, share their memories and to also ask if they would be willing to make a donation to the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries at Canford. A number of the OCs making the telephone calls had been in receipt of significant bursaries themselves and were very pleased to be able to work for Canford and give back so soon after leaving.

The conversations that they had with other OCs were fascinating and many of our callers were offered advice from OCs only too willing to help and in return eager hear all about what Canford is like in 2019! The callers worked hard but were rewarded by the enlightening conversations they had and also the generosity of OCs willing to make either a oneoff or regular donations.

Over 500 OCs were contacted and with gifts, large and small, the telethon collectively raised more than £70,000 which will provide valuable support to the Martin Marriott Foundation for transformational bursaries at Canford.The atmosphere amongst the callers was very lively and they thoroughly enjoyed their time talking with OCs.

Everyone I spoke to was incredibly encouraging and willing to talk about career plans and give advice or tips when I brought up my application for Law - several offered me work experience and were more than happy for me to get in touch personally or ask them for more advice at any time. Reunite

AND REMINISCE Launching Canford Global Connect just one year ago, has set us on a path to help Old Canfordians find each other and connect online. This can bring benefits of renewed friendship, business and networking opportunities and also the possibilities of helping and supporting other OCs. Whilst this is a really effective and practical tool, nothing can quite replace the magic of meeting up face to face.

In the last three years we have been holding reunion lunches, mostly on request but from September 2019, we have planned reunions at ten year intervals for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50+ years and these events will be a regular fixture each year.

Reunions are a real pleasure to organise and all OCs who return are so pleased that they made the effort and in some cases ‘plucked up the courage’ to come back. Some travel from overseas to attend. Everyone enjoys these occasions and the chatter and laughter can be almost deafening in John o’Gaunt’s as old stories are told, memories are renewed and friendships are regained and restored.

Fifty Years of CO-EDUCATION

Celebrating Fifty Years of Co-education has included asking OCs for memories of their time at Canford. Some have been shared on social media in our #Fiftyfor50 campaign covering 50 weeks of memories which has generated a lot of interest.

On 19th April we will be welcoming OCs to Canford for the OC Arts family day where they can take part in music, drama and art workshops as well as catching up with other OCs and enjoying the Canford grounds. Celebrations will conclude at the OC London Drinks Party to be held at Coq d’Argent on Thursday 11th June.

SUNDAY 19TH APRIL 2020: OC DAY OF CREATIVE ARTS Bring your family back to Canford for the day to celebrate 50 years of co-education. There are a host of free activities for you to take part in:

Rusty Musicians’ Orchestra Whether you last played your instrument when you were still at school, or whether you are still keenly involved in making ensemble music, this workshop is for you. Children who can read music also welcome.

Stage Fighting (10+) Challenge yourself and your nemesis to a duel! Learn to inflict and receive mortal wounds in absolute safety during our practical stage fighting workshop.

Drawing workshop (10+) Practice your drawing and try new techniques to broaden your range of styles and increase your skill level.

Creative Storytelling (open to all) Come and enjoy creative storytelling in the theatre foyer. Suitable for all ages, but staged in particular with young families in mind, sit back and allow yourselves to be transported to somewhere far, far away!

‘Come and Sing!’ (10+) This rousing session will give you the chance to join with members of Canford’s Chapel Choir to sing a couple of exciting favourites from their repertoire.

Cyanotype Printing workshop (10+) Using natural materials gathered from the site, and photographic images you will be able to create unique prints to take home that reflect some of the flora found at Canford.

Stage Make-up (10+) Join us in the backstage dressing rooms to discover the secrets of stage make up. Participants will be given the opportunity to try out some simple but effective techniques and learn the tricks of the trade.

Drumming Extravaganza (open to all) Open to all ages and all abilities, this is an opportunity to make some noise! You are guaranteed to enjoy putting together a performance that will raise the roof of the Gisborough Hall!

A children’s arts and crafts workshop for all ages will run across all time slots and the swimming pool will be open for family swimming from 11am until 2pm.

The BBQ will start at 2.30pm and garden style games will be available on the lawn.

This new initiative, supported by the Old Canfordian Society will serve as an effective communication tool for Canford events and will enable you to find out ‘who’s going’ - something that we are constantly asked about!

If you are considering changing your career path and need advice, looking for a new job or seeking to recruit someone for your organisation, this network will be invaluable. Already we have many OCs who have offered to help by giving advice or being a mentor. Thank you!

CANFORD Friends of Canford School ran a full programme of events during 2019. As always, these events provided parents and other members of the Canford Community with the opportunity to enjoy some of the school’s unique facilities and activities, get to know other parents and feel involved in school life. Learning Real tennis and having the chance to shoot on the Rifle Range were just 2 of the regular highlights of the year as was the Spring Lunch where we were inspired by the life story of local, young businesswoman, Sonnaz Nooranvary, who is one of the expert restorers on the BBC2’s The Repair Shop.

The extra funds raised from these events were provided as grants to a number of school projects and partnerships. These were applied for by Canford staff and pupil leaders and those chosen demonstrated a high impact on social, environmental or educational purpose, a potential legacy and benefit to the wider community.The new projects funded by Friends of Canford this year were a Pop-up Theatre Space and a Moveable Paintball Range. We also continued our support for City Reach and the Serious Fun on Saturday programme at Canford for children from 3 local primary schools.

Joining Friends of Canford is one of the best things you can do when your teenager joins the school. Everyone is welcome to sign up for the events on the school website. I want to thank and pay tribute to all of the committee members this year.

Unlike other Canford sports, rowers hardly ever have home matches. Most weekends during the racing season involve trips to the Tideway in London, Dorney Lake or other rowing venues around the country.

The Friends of Canford Rowing was formed as a way of supporting the current pupil rowers and providing that home atmosphere wherever they were racing.

Every weekend during racing season, the FCR turn up with a gazebo, hot food, brownies and a huge amount of enthusiasm. Rowing reports are sent out afterwards so parents unable to attend are kept informed.

CANFORD MUSIC Volante! Yet another busy year in the Music School, with each year seeming to surpass the previous.

THE AUTUMN TERM - traditional set pieces followed with the ‘Evensong’ at Winchester Cathedral, the magical Christmas Concert and sublime Carol Concert at Wimborne Minster.

THE 2019 SPRING TERM welcomed the annual residence

by the Britten Sinfonia and a masterclass by pianist Libby Burgess, followed shortly by the effervescent Jazz Concert, this time without last year’s snow storm! This was swiftly followed by the quintessential trip to St John’s Smith Square, London where the Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, String Orchestra and Choir all played and sang in the historic hall.

FINALLY THE SUMMER TERM! ‘A Plethora of Pianists’

performed by the talented Canford piano teachers and music staff, celebrating the recently refurbished Steinway piano.To complete the year was the Summer Concert and a rousing selection of music from the choirs, orchestras and bands!

A special mention to Ben Davies. Ben originally helped establish FCM and has been Chair for the last six years. His performance over the years will be difficult to follow! Finally, this coming year is celebrating 50 years of co-education at Canford and a number of musical events can be found in the school diary. Events are regularly supported by Friends of Canford Music (FCM), our aim is to support the department both in publicity and in warmly welcoming you to events, often with a beverage and programme!

This year, the OCS has focussed on developing our alumni services to become more agile and inclusive to all Old Canfordians. This included supporting the introduction of a new online alumni service – Canford Global Connect - and we are delighted to see OCs from 1948 through to 2019 joining. This is a very effective way for OCs to re-connect and keep in touch with each other and all that is going on at Canford, as well as a vehicle to post jobs at your organisation, offer work experience or find a mentor.

The annual Careers Symposium was held in March and we are most grateful to the OCs and parents who give up their time to support Canfordians in their career development decisions. We look forward to more OCs contributing to the next symposium and would like to encourage any OC not able to attend but who would be willing to offer advice or mentoring to use Canford Global Connect to do this.

Our thanks go to the Development Office team who continue to work very closely with the OCS and have organised a number of reunions for OCs. Each year events are now being organised for a year-group to celebrate their decennial anniversary of leaving Canford.

At the AGM held in November, Robin Wright retired as OCS President and was thanked for his enthusiasm and commitment to the OCS through many years of service. I was pleased to be elected and look forward to working with the committee and Development Office for the benefit of all Old Canfordians.

Perhaps you have a good-quality but unused instrument gathering dust and would like to donate it, thereby helping more young people to make even more music?

In 2020, we will continue to celebrate the anniversary of 50 Years of Co-education and we hope that many OCs will join us at Canford for the OC Family Arts Day on 19th April. There will be a variety of activities to take part in, not only for artists, and it will be an opportunity to see the how the school is developing and catch up with friends. We are very much looking forward to the OC London Drinks Party on 11th June which will conclude the celebrations for 50 Years of Co-education at Canford.

VOLUNTEERS Many Old Canfordians, parents, friends and staff give up their own time to volunteer in many ways to support the Canford Community, by helping out at events, attending the Careers Symposium, helping with school trips, talking to pupils, mentoring Canfordians and OCs, being a Governor to mention just a few.

Careers Symposium 2019 CREATE YOUR OWN PATH The theme of this year’s Careers Symposium, held on Friday 22nd March, was ‘Create Your Own Path’ which tied in with an overarching aim across the school to help pupils develop their interpersonal and communication skills, in both an academic and business context.

Now in its 16th year, the annual Symposium offers pupils in the Lower Sixth the opportunity to start preparing for their life after Canford, explore career pathways and entry into the world of work. Each year, over 70 volunteers from the Canford Community, alumni and parents, representing a vast number of industries, share their skills and personal experiences and advise, guide and inform pupils about their own working lives.

This year, Lower Sixth pupils were asked to consider what their real passions are and what they enjoy to assist them in pursuing their interests and an eventual career. The pre-lunch workshop entitled ‘Networking for your Dream Career’, facilitated by Canford parents Simon Phillips and Anna Herrington, helped them explore how they might best present themselves in person and through different media, to reflect these interests and helped them prepare themselves for the 1-2-1 networking session later in the day. It was a very interactive morning session which was enjoyed by both pupils and volunteers.
