Academic EXCELLENCE Our academic standards are high and we encourage every pupil to achieve their very best. Canford has an excellent record in external examination results at both GCSE and A Level and fully recognises the importance of these to the next stage of education and the world of work. Curriculum study is supplemented with a broad range of intellectual opportunities, such as membership of academic societies, the annual Festival of Ideas, external essay competitions run by the Financial Times and Oxbridge colleges and the National Maths Olympiad.

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
When Isabella Woodward decided to enter this year’s essay competition from Newnham College, Cambridge, she knew she would be competing against strong entries from Year 12 pupils from schools across the country. So she was thrilled to receive the news that she had been placed 3rd and was invited to Newnham to receive her award. Izzy entered the Biological Sciences category, where she was asked to ‘Nominate a living woman biologist for a Nobel prize, and justify your choice.’ Izzy wrote passionately in support of professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz for her seminal work on embryonic stem cells and embryonic development. Magdalena has dedicated her life to providing groundbreaking understanding of cells which will radically enhance the way modern medicine works, especially in IVF treatment, and the examples Izzy gave were both detailed and justified.
“I was so excited to learn that my essay had received a prize. It was fascinating exploring the professor’s work and feel she definitely deserves a Nobel prize!”

LIFE SKILLS
LIFE SKILLS
PREPARING FOR LIFE BEYOND CANFORD We can’t predict what the future will hold for young people in the world of work, but we can equip them with as many skills as possible to give them the best chance of success, whatever their chosen path.
IVY HOUSE
Extraordinary Leaders, Extraordinary Lives We offer the Ivy House Award programme at Canford - a new, innovative programme of personal and professional development for emerging talent. • 14 Canford staff facilitators • 140 Lower Sixth pupils • 2 term project - leading to The Ivy House Award
“The Award encourages people to think about themselves and their future in a way that they have never been able to before.” STUART DALGLEISH, HR DIRECTOR – CENTRICA
Presentation Skills Teamwork Social Responsibility Leadership Creativity Inclusivity Digital Literacy
INTERVIEW SKILLS There are numerous opportunities for Canford pupils to develop their interview skills. Prospective teaching staff invited to interview meet not only relevant current staff but also current pupils, which gives a more rounded insight and pupil perspective on a candidate and also enables pupils to learn about the interview process and how to make objective assessments as an interviewer. If pupils want to join one of our Partnership trips or become a Pupil Leader, they take part in a formal application and interview process which further develops their skills.
“Having the ability to conduct yourself in a confident, informed way is a very valuable skill. A positive interview can indeed shape your whole future.” MICHAEL DOHERTY, HEAD OF CAREERS
CCF

BUSINESS ENTERPRISE
PRIZE WINNING DESIGN
Each year Business Enterprise pupil groups create business plans with the aim of donating profits to chosen charities. Adam Mowe from Investec and Klara Lorenz from the London School of Economics listened to pitches and gave feedback. They were so impressed that they gave each group starter funds. Canfordians have also been working with students from the Hun School, USA to develop a sustainable bottled water brand.
Five Fourth Form girls entered the annual Bournemouth Soroptimist International STEM Challenge where students work in teams to produce innovative designs which sustainably solve problems caused by aspects of poverty. The Canford project to design and present ideas for a new electric assisted water carrier took six months to develop, with the high quality proposal winning first prize in the regional heat.

When Chalke Valley History Festival Director James Holland approached Will to create a new version of ‘Downlands’, a Public Information film shot in 1947, he was excited to rise to the challenge.
Nick was recently shortlisted in The Outdoor Photographer of the Year Awards and has worked internationally for Avis, Nikon, Infiniti and Land Rover.
“I am so grateful to the Festival team for giving me the freedom to make the film how I saw best. I am delighted that my film was enjoyed as a modern interpretation of an iconic classic in the history of the Second World War.”
“At Canford I have been able to develop my skills through shooting lots of films of school life and trying new styles of film-making. Everyone at Canford has been so supportive and encouraging and for that I will always be very grateful.”
PUPIL PODCAST Want to know what it’s really like to be a boarder? Or what the value is of studying Latin? Or which staff have hidden talents? Then you need to tune in to ‘This Canford Life’ – Canford’s new podcast. This is the brainchild of Lower Sixth Pupil Leader Hamish Johnson, who will select the topics and panellists for a series of broadcasts through the 2019-20 academic year. Listen via Apple Podcasts or Canford YouTube.
A school does not sit in isolation. We want our pupils to think globally, to explore cultures and continents and to use this in their learning. Visiting speakers with stories to tell of experiences around the world are complemented with a celebration of cultural events and talks by international pupils on the political, social or historical side of life in their home country. We have had a partnership link with the Goodwill Children’s Home in Tamil Nadu for over 20 years, and more recently have established educational links with schools in Princeton, USA and in Rajasthan, India.

SAGAR JOINT PROJECT Canford and Sagar pupils have been working together to investigate different topics during 2019. Each group has collaborated on the similarities and differences regarding how humans impact each country. They have worked together to share their research and have filmed some of their practical work before concluding with a presentation.
“I found getting to know the other students from India and learning about their school and backgrounds really interesting. ”

“As a Rugby scholar, Canford offers me multiple sports sessions throughout the week which is great after a long day in the classroom. I have access to so many resources that have helped me to develop my sporting ability, whether that be experienced teachers that are easy to talk to or specialised gym programs that help me get stronger. I have continued my club Rugby and have progressed to a higher level joining the Bath Academy. An installation of lights, costumes, props and memorabilia with work from our talented art scholars created in response to the building, was on display, with ‘access all areas’ allowing the Canford community to walk around the stage, through the dressing rooms and into the Jarman Studio hidden in the depths of the building. The celebration included unseen alternative stage designs for past productions, photographs of current teachers performing on stage when they were pupils here and an original musical number produced by an all teaching staff cast.

By promoting professional fulfilment and wholeheartedly investing in staff development, our pupils benefit from an engaged body of staff, committed to excellence and with a sense of community and purpose. The weekly staff development programme is a mix of academic, cultural and social activities designed to stimulate and challenge. In our recruitment, we of course look for staff who are highly skilled in their particular areas, and many have other hidden talents!
