Family That Shines: Todd Family Meet Izabell “Izzy” Rae, a 9 year old cancer warrior from Eagle Point, OR! Izzy was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when she was just 4 years old. She is currently two years off treatment and doing amazing! She loves music and dancing and her favorite items to watch are Pitch Perfect and Dancing with the

Stars, and her favorite song is Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars because it makes her feel happy. She has also found a new passion, volleyball, which she was able to play for the first time this year!

Candlelighters For Children With Cancer publishes CandlelightersConnections four times a year to provide news and other information to our childhood cancer community in Oregon and SW Washington.

Candlelighters has been a tremendous support system and always helped us anytime and in any way they could including but not limited to helping us pay a deposit for an apartment closer to the hospital while we were doing treatment/chemotherapy twice a week.

They are our family!” says Courtney.

“You never think it will ever be your child until it does. Candlelighters is an amazing organization who have helped in so many ways and continue to do so even after therapy is completed.”

Candlelighters offers programs and services to the WHOLE family when a child is diagnosed with cancer and will continuing serving the family through remission and beyond. We create opportunities for families to join with one another, help break up the monotony of treatment in the hospital, assist with paying bills, and more.

Meet 2018 RFAC Committee Chair Eric Gross Welcome Eric Gross! The committee is comprised of current and past cyclists who work tirelessly to make RFAC special every year. This will be Eric’s third year riding with RFAC. “RFAC allows me to make lemonade out of lemons. I am given the opportunity to help children who are bravely fighting cancer while pursuing an activity that I love. I have also been blessed with some world class friends who have joined me on RFAC which makes the work that much more fulfilling. RFAC is quite simply people banding together to do good for others.”

Eric is married to his wife Kerry, also a Candlelighters Volunteer, and will be celebrating their 32nd anniversary in 2018! They have two children: Matt, a senior at Oregon State University, and Lindsey, a Washington State University graduate who has recently married and now lives in Portland. When asked about his favorite part of RFAC, Eric replied, “Without a doubt, our “Ride Out” we have with the Honored Children during Cycle Oregon, is my favorite moment. To see these children who are fighting cancer get the opportunity to have a normal moment is worth everything and more.”

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: Callahan Law Office Last year, Callahan Law Office joined our Cancer Warrior initiative and supported Candlelighters inaugural Cancer Warrior Breakfast. Being a father and US Army Veteran deployed 4 times for medical support and combat missions to Kuwait, Haiti, Kosovo and Afghanistan as a Military Police Officer, he was inspired by the organization’s mission to support every member of the family when a child was diagnosed with cancer.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Deacon Corp The Deacon Charitable Foundation first gave Candlelighters a grant of $3,000 in December 2009, and there have been many Employee Matching Grants since then. Since 2015, the Portland Office has been adopting families for our Candy Cane Lane Program which helps families in need during the holiday season.

“Cancer has touched most everyone in our office in one way or another, but this past year, more closely than ever. Having that personal tie to this disease and imagining what that’s like as a child made this last Candy Cane Lane event our most successful to date. To be able to help ease the burden of Christmas on these families even just a little bit was very important to our employees and evident by the number of gifts and donations received.”

In 2006, The Deacon Charitable Foundation was created to allow Deacon Construction’s corporate giving to be more impactful in the communities where Deacon employees live and work and has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal for their innovative approach. Focus areas come directly from employees and supporting children and families has always

been a top focus and one that aligns well with the mission of Candlelighters. Deacon Construction corporate giving structure is rare within the industry: a 2:1 dollar match for employee giving, a $20 per hour match for volunteerism, 8 hours per year for participation in community service projects, and recognition of “Deacon Community Go-Givers” which provides exceptional employee volunteers with funding they may direct to their community nonprofit of choice.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Rob & Gina Smith Meet Rob and Gina Smith. The Smith Family exemplifies volunteerism. They’ve donated at least one night a month serving dinners at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for the past 6+ years, volunteered with Ride For A Child and Oaks Park Day, adopted families for Candy Cane Lane, and offered support and kindness to families experiencing childhood cancer. “The time volunteers spend helping families going through childhood cancer is instrumental in helping them cope with the day to day grind of treatment.

Candlelighters was truly a blessing for my family in our darkest hours. We would be honored to come alongside anyone standing on the sidelines and encourage them to give to this wonderful cause.”

“We were introduced to Candlelighters when our 3-yr. old son went through cancer treatment at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in 2002. He is now 18 (yeah!). Early in our journey, Candlelighters reached out to us with financial support and encouraged us to get to know other families by

attending the numerous Candlelighters events including Family Camp, hospital dinners, Oaks Park and more. Candlelighters volunteers Mark and Jenny Lambert, Denise Hartung, and Scott and Robin Bonesteele were instrumental in supporting our family during the difficult days of treatment.

As our family emerges from the cancer journey, we both made it a priority to give back to the charity that was instrumental in getting us through childhood cancer.”

Rob and Gina have 3 children: Hunter 18, Hannah 13, and Faith 9. Rob works for Portland

General Electric and Gina works for the Battle Ground School District and is completing her bachelor’s degree in teaching. “We are uniquely equipped by living through the experience of childhood cancer. During the journey we made and lost numerous friends. Candlelighters was instrumental in helping us accept a hand up for the first time in our lives and gave us a unique perspective that we humbly continue to leverage toward helping others going through the same life changing trials.”

D.I.Y. FUNDRAISER SPOTLIGHT: 10 Barrel Brewing Co. Pizza, beer, and out-of-this-world gorgonzola nachos made an incredible night of raising funds for Candlelighters at 10 Barrel Brewing Co! In fact, Candlelighters friends, families, and board members joined together with 10 Barrel patrons and raised $1,610.55 for families impacted by childhood cancer. 10 Barrel Manager Emily Balen shared, “Candlelighters mission of caring for the whole family was something that really stood out to us as something we thought everyone dealing with pediatric cancer should have access to. We wanted to do our part to

enable more families to have access to this wonderful benefit that Candlelighters provides.”

Per Balen, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. have raised $375,000 to date for local charities in Bend, Boise, Portland, and Denver through their “Charity of the Month” program.

CANDLELIGHTERS CHAPTERS’ NEWS Portland Chapter Candy Cane Lane Some of our families in need had the opportunity to come together and celebrate Candy Cane Lane. We had crafts, a lunch donated by Subway, treats and milkshakes, hugs from Santa himself, and the opportunity for families to visit with one another.

2017 was our biggest Candy Cane Lane event to date, serving 178 kiddos from 60 families with a child in treatment! Thank you to the 24 individual donors and 7 corporate partners who filled wish lists and to Westside: A Jesus Church for graciously donating their event space.

Additionally, 36 volunteers made that day go seamlessly, and we are grateful for your time!

Time of Remembrance

Our 8th annual Time of Remembrance was held on December 15, at DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton Portland. Time of Remembrance brings families together to celebrate children who have passed away and honor our families who are on the journey that is grief and bereavement, through music, refreshments, activities, family and friendship. Our hope is that this day will help families move into, and through, the holidays, with a bit more peace. This year’s guest speaker was Melinda Laus, who gave a heartfelt and meaningful message about grief and celebrating even through the holidays.

ZooLights was amazing and filled with holiday spirit with 300+ family members attending!

It was a magical night full of sparkling lights, smiles, and bundled up families. Our families experienced a special night riding the train, visiting the animals, and seeing the magic of ZooLights.

Central Oregon Chapter Holiday Party The annual Holiday Party was a huge success! Central Oregon Candlelighters families had an incredible evening of food, music, shooting pool, games, entertainment, and all the

magic that the holidays bring.

Kids and families opened gifts and it truly was a lovely evening that our families spent connecting with each other.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Beginnings and endings are always dramatic and occasionally traumatic.”

— Kilroy J. Oldster, Dead Toad Scrolls The most obvious ending and beginning is when the clock strikes midnight on a new year. Celebrations take place and it’s a positive way to close out the end of a year and focus on a new year. Candlelighters is saying farewell to some long time board members and welcoming some new faces.

Board Members Farewell When 2017 came to end, Candlelighters bade farewell to three board members who had served their terms. We honor and recognize Mark Carnese, who served 9+ years in various roles including as President of the Board.

13 years ago, Kirsten met some amazing families battling cancer. For several years she also served on our board and encouraged her husband Mark to get involved. During Mark’s tenure, he stewarded the organization from an all-volunteer to a staff model.

We thank Sarie Crothers who supported Candlelighters as an in-hospital volunteer

and sponsored many Candlelighters events through her employer Washington Trust.

We thank Lisa Sorenson who served six years as a board member and launched a new charitable giving program through her employer Premier Property Group.

Through her leadership, Candlelighters was one of the first beneficiaries. Lisa was also instrumental in the growth of the SUPERHERO 5k serving on the committee, orchestrating the awards at the event, and recruiting friends and work colleagues to join her team. Since 2014, Lisa has help raised over $5,000 for the 5k.
