Well done Captain, Roosters and we have a new Greens leader

CO

NTRIBU

TO

with BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

Well done to heroic Indian airplane Captain Smit Machchhar, whose great courage saved the lives of his 182 passengers and crew on an early morning flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. His crazed radical Islamist co-pilot, it seems, tried to kill him with a small axe and crash the plane, but the Captain managed to open the cabin

door so that some of the passengers could charge in and subdue the attacker. If I was a hijacker, the last plane I’d try to hijack would be a plane full of Israelis, as nearly all of them have had military training. In this case, the heroic plumber who subdued the co-pilot was also a fan of airline disaster movies and knew how to at least steady the plane. (He pulled the control stick back.) A great effort by all concerned. Congrats also to the Roosters for winning an engrossing NRL grand final 19 to 18. Great effort by the Knights, who came from 7th to get there and who, through dogged defence and a never-say-die attitude, almost won the match. But the Roosters were too strong and had most of the

ball and won a tight game. I would also single out Easts winger Mark Nawaqanitawase, a big, strong, freakishly talented young bloke who is off to the Wallabies next year and who will help raise our chances in the Rugby World Cup next year. Greens senator David Shoebridge also won a party room ballot for leader 7 to 4 against Mehreen Faruqi. An interesting statistic and proof of how hypocritical the Greens can be is the fact that both contenders are millionaires with significant property portfolios in very good prime real estate spots. Woollahra, where David lives, is a very nice, salubrious address. David is probably less rabid than Mehreen, but not by much. It’s also interesting that he and his family are

in the top 1 per cent of rich Australians and, guess what, he wants to target that 1 per cent so they can pay their way more in taxes. Here’s a suggestion, David: Why not also let some homeless families occupy your two rented Sydney properties, rent-free? You and your family don’t seem to need the money. And Mehreen, even though you lost the leadership contest, you too are well off and you too could do the same with two of your rental properties. As Dr Yuri Zhivago said to the house commissar upon returning to his Moscow mansion after WWI finished, which was now occupied by about 10 families: “Yes Comrade, it is a much fairer arrangement.” It’s also interesting the Greens had a chance to put their money where their mouth was and abide by their DEI principles and elect a woman of colour who was also a Muslim to boot, but chose instead a middle-aged, privileged, European white guy.

440 pairs of shoes highlight Australia’s foster care crisis by BERNIE RYAN A national coalition of child and family organisations, carers and advocates brought 440 pairs of children’s shoes to Australian Parliament House recently. They were calling for practical national reforms to strengthen foster and kinship care and ensure children can access stable, supported family-based care. Each pair of different-sized shoes represented approximately 100 of the more than 44,000 children and young people living in outof-home care across Australia. Those who spoke at the event included Suzanne Greenwood, Families Australia Chief Executive Officer; Sarah Witty MP; Kate Chaney MP; Dr Lisa J. Griffiths, National Foster Care Sustainability Group Chair and OzChild Chief Executive Officer; and Kelly Jebb, PeakCare Chief Executive Officer, foster carer and member

of the National Foster Care Sustainability Group. “This is a crisis in plain sight,” says Ms Greenwood. The group reports that whilst the number of children entering care remains steady, the number of new and active foster carers has declined by 21 per cent since 2017, increasing the urgency of growing and sustaining Australia’s community of foster and kinship carers. The sector warns that without coordinated national action, more children who cannot safely live at home will be left without access to stable, family-based care, placing greater pressure on already stretched carers and increasing reliance on residential care. Call for practical national reforms Families Australia and the National Foster Care Sustainability Group (NFCSG) are calling for practical reforms, including a portable Passport to Care, better access to health and therapeutic

services, reduced financial pressure on carers, and fairer workplace leave arrangements for foster and kinship carers.

Dad was lonely in the house by himself. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help. Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, but now he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. Household chores are no longer a burden, with weekly apartment cleaning and linen changes included. Plus, the pressure of home maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing the things he loves again. I know Dad eats well every day, with breakfast and two home-cooked meals provided. For added peace of mind, there’s someone onsite 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. Now when we talk, it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier. The Grange is not aged care, and personal care services are not provided.

With meals, weekly cleaning and linen changes included, Home Care Package funding can be directed towards Clinical Care and Independent Support services.

news Local foster carers Bev and David have cared for hundreds of children over more than 40 years, for anywhere from one night to becoming lifelong family members. “The oldest of the children whom we are still involved with is now in their fifties,” says Bev. Bev believes that the out-of-home care system needs significant reform if children and society are to continue to benefit from the rich contribution that stable, family-based care provides. “If we are looking after these children, they won’t be a financial drain on someone else, or on the unemployment lists for life,” she says. Bev says that it is not a child’s fault that they need care. “The children who come into care, it’s not because they’re naughty,” she says. “It’s because they’re a victim of the circumstances adults have put them in. “They may have behaviours that act out, but they can always be addressed.” To give more children maximum opportunity to grow up as happy, healthy individuals, Bev reiterates the action called for outside Parliament House.

canberradaily.com.au

Particularly, more timely access to health and specialist care for children, and changes to national employment standards which recognise the important role that foster carers play. Bev says there is a misconception that foster carers are paid for all the care they provide and that all the financial needs of children in their care are met by ‘the government’. “You don’t get ‘paid’ for this,” she says. Bev explains that whilst foster carers are provided with a fortnightly payment, this is a subsidy for carers, which is only a partial offset for the needs of the children in their care. “Everything else has to be budgeted for and foster and kinship carers all contribute a lot of their own time, effort and money,” she says. “This is a contribution to the community and providing this sort of care is something you do because you have a commitment to making sure that children are safe.” As cost-of-living pressures continue to escalate across Australia, the number of families willing and able to care for children is becoming increasingly disproportionate to the need. Where employment standards are concerned, Bev points out that other forms of community

service receive formal workplace leave recognition, whereas foster care is overlooked. “Those who provide a community service, like our SES, volunteer fire brigade people, lifesavers ... they are recognised for their contribution,” Bev says. “They will often be given time off work without losing pay. And so, they should be.” Ms Greenwood agrees. “If we want more Australians to open their homes to children who need safety, stability and healing, we have to remove the barriers that make caring harder than it needs to be,” she says. Reflecting on the 440 pairs of shoes and who they uniquely represent, Kelly Jebb says, “Forty-four thousand isn’t just a statistic. It’s forty-four thousand actual kids, in actual bedrooms, wondering if this is the place they get to stay.” “We need more people willing to open their homes. But we also need to stop making it so hard for the ones who already have.” For more information, visit futureoffostercare. org.au

Shane Rattenbury appointed CEO of Lifeline Canberra by NICHOLAS FULLER Five months after retiring from politics, former ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury has been appointed CEO of Lifeline Canberra. From next Monday, Mr Rattenbury will be responsible for both the ACT’s 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention charity and Lifeline Narrm in Melbourne. “I’ve always wanted to work with and support the community,” Mr Rattenbury said. “When I left politics, I knew I wanted to step into a new role where I was able to continue to support the community and make an impact – and Lifeline is exactly that organisation. “It is a trusted organisation in the community. It’s one that people

know they can go to at those times of need. To be able to help be part of this, make sure it’s successful, make sure it’s strong and there where it’s needed, is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to do.” Mr Rattenbury has had what he calls “a long connection with Lifeline” for more than a dozen years. As the Territory and Municipal Services Minister, he helped to organise Lifeline’s first Canberra Fun Run and Half Marathon, held on Majura Parkway in 2014. As mental health minister, he worked closely with Lifeline to make sure the community was supported during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has spoken at Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk, a dawn vigil and community walk held every year on

“I’ve known Carrie for a long time,” Mr Rattenbury said. “She’s left a terrific legacy as the former leader. She’s built an organisation that has excellent foundations and is very well regarded in the community. I’m really a fan of Carrie’s. I feel like I’ve got some big shoes to step into, but I’m sure Carrie will be there as a supporter. She’s already given me some great background, and I look forward to keeping in touch with her.” Mr Rattenbury says his vision is to make sure Lifeline answers as many calls to its hotline (13 11 14) as possible. The number of people reaching out to Lifeline increased by 61 per cent over the last year, and, although volunteers take almost 100 calls each day, some calls go unanswered. At least one Canberran dies by suicide every week – and Lifeline believes these deaths can be prevented. Mr Rattenbury encouraged people in difficulty to reach out to friends, family, or Lifeline.

World Suicide Prevention Day. And he once sang Daryl Braithwaite’s ‘The Horses’ onstage at a Lifeline charity ball. “Lifeline is such an important part of the Canberra community,” Mr Rattenbury said. “There are lots of people out there who have moments where they’re really struggling, where they’re really in need of support, and Lifeline is always there for people. Being able to be part of that team, to help deliver that service, but also think about how we evolve Lifeline to continue to meet emerging community needs, is an exciting opportunity.” Mr Rattenbury succeeds CarrieAnn Leeson, who left Lifeline this June after 12 years to become CEO of the National Australia Day Council.

“Never feel alone,” he said. “There is always someone out there who loves you; who cares about you; who wants to help you out. So don’t think that you

can’t reach out. Don’t think there is no-one out there for you.” The next stage is to think about what services Lifeline can offer in the future,

Mr Rattenbury said. “In a context where more and more people in the community are reporting feeling lonely and isolated, where people are struggling with a range of life pressures, how can Lifeline support the community in those times of need?” Mr Rattenbury was one of the longestserving ministers in the history of the ACT Legislative Assembly. In his 18-year career, he was AttorneyGeneral and the ACT’s first mental health minister. He says his time in the Assembly has given him a good knowledge of Canberra – the community Lifeline operates in; experience in governance and policy; and relationships with community service providers. But he does not miss politics. “I have not missed it for the last few months, and I’m not going to miss it,” Mr Rattenbury said. “But I’ll be flat out here. There’s so much to do with Lifeline that my life will be very full and

very fulfilling.” The ACT Greens congratulated Mr Rattenbury on his appointment. Acting Greens leader Andrew Braddock MLA said: “Shane served the Canberra community for almost two decades in the Legislative Assembly, as ACT Greens Leader, as Attorney-General, and as the ACT’s first dedicated Minister for Mental Health. Throughout that time he was a tireless advocate for compassionate, evidence-based policy and for a community that looks after its people. “Lifeline Canberra is a vital part of our community, and we know Shane will bring the same care, integrity and commitment to this new role. We thank him for his continued service to the ACT and wish him every success.” If you are experiencing crisis, Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14. Let super intelligence run free

T

by DEJAN HINIC AND GABRIEL MOENS

he most important policy debate of the coming decade will concern artificial intelligence (AI). Specifically, it will need to address the question whether the development of AI should be advanced through regulation or whether innovation should be allowed to proceed under existing legal frameworks and market discipline. That debate recently acquired two prominent champions. In Washington, President Donald Trump adopted Executive Order 14434, entitled Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence (SI), to replace the common reference to AI with SI because “The capabilities of today’s frontier systems … should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people”. He also convened leading figures from the artificial intelligence industry and reiterated his preference for self-regulation over restrictive government intervention. The participants included representatives from major AI firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, xAI and Nvidia. The resulting White House Accord on Super Intelligence was voluntary in nature, focusing on internal governance, auditing and oversight rather than statutory mandates. Trump described the arrangement as morally binding while rejecting demands for comprehensive new restrictions on AI development. In contrast, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, advocated stronger guardrails and expanded oversight mechanisms for advanced AI systems. In a Press Conference held on Thursday 24 September, in New York, Albanese argued that, although AI had the potential to improve lives, strengthen economic productivity and support the acceleration of medical breakthroughs, humans need to control the technology. He said: “AI is changing the world. It is bringing enormous economic opportunity for growth, for productivity benefits, for breakthroughs in health, in innovation and other areas of science. But AI also poses significant risks and that’s why we need guardrails to protect our way of life. We want to make sure that we shape AI rather than AI shaping us.” Accordingly, Australia has developed safety standards and governance frameworks intended to guide the deployment of artificial intelligence

14

across the economy. Both positions, although they are clearly opposed to each other, are intellectually defensible. However, we argue that only selfregulation is likely to produce prosperity. The reason for this opinion stems from our belief that too many policymakers approach AI (or SI) as though it were primarily a problem to be managed rather than an opportunity to be seized. The language surrounding AI is dominated by risk, threat, danger and control. Far less attention is devoted to what advanced machine intelligence could achieve, especially as a data retrieval technology that could provide answers to any issue that bedevils modern societies. Indeed, artificial intelligence is not merely another software product. It is a general-purpose technology with the potential to influence scientific research, medicine, engineering, logistics, manufacturing and education simultaneously. Artificial intelligence has thus become a strategic asset. Its significance extends beyond commercial applications into defence, intelligence, scientific capability and national competitiveness. When a technology has the capacity to improve performance across an entire economy, policymakers should begin with a presumption in favour of development rather than restriction. This is where the advocates of regulation make their first mistake. They assume that because AI may become extraordinarily powerful, governments must therefore become extraordinarily involved. Yet power alone has never been a compelling argument for regulation. The more important question is whether regulators possess the expertise necessary to improve outcomes. There is little evidence that they do. The frontier of AI is being advanced by specialists operating in a field that changes at remarkable speed. Entire technical paradigms evolve within a matter of years. New architectures emerge, unexpected capabilities appear, and research priorities shift continuously. By the time a parliamentary committee completes an inquiry, the underlying technology may already have changed substantially. This is because regulatory frameworks are often developed through consultation processes that may take years. The notion that lawmakers can thus confidently establish detailed rules for systems they neither design nor fully understand rests on a level of institutional confidence that is difficult to justify. AI models can improve multiple times during the

same period. This creates a structural problem. Regulation is static. Innovation is dynamic. Whenever the two collide, innovation usually wins. Either the regulation becomes irrelevant, or it becomes an obstacle. Another reason for preferring self-regulation is that complex bureaucratic compliance requirements make competition more expensive. Every additional reporting requirement, certification regime and approval process imposes costs that favour those with the deepest pockets. The entrepreneurial start-up developing a breakthrough application is usually less capable of navigating regulatory bureaucracy than the multinational technology giant. This matters because genuine innovation rarely emerges from government departments or regulatory bodies. It emerges from individuals and small teams pursuing ideas that initially appear uncertain, risky or unconventional. The next transformative advance in artificial intelligence is unlikely to be scheduled by a government office. It is far more likely to come from an organisation experimenting beyond the boundaries of current assumptions. Heavy regulation narrows those possibilities. There is also a tendency among proponents of stricter controls to underestimate the capacity of AI companies to behave responsibly. The popular narrative suggests that technology firms will inevitably behave recklessly unless governments compel them to act responsibly. This view ignores the economic realities facing the companies involved. The organisations building advanced AI systems depend upon trust. Customers, investors and business partners all have an interest in ensuring that these systems operate reliably. A significant safety failure would expose companies to legal liability, reputational damage and commercial losses. Firms at the frontier of AI development already devote enormous resources to testing, evaluation and security because their own interests require them to do so. The White House Accord reflects this reality. Although voluntary, it commits participating companies to internal controls, monitoring systems, independent evaluation and board-level oversight. Critics object that the arrangement lacks legal force. That criticism misses the essential point. The Accord demonstrates that governance mechanisms can emerge through industry initiative rather than through statutory compulsion. The world has entered what is effectively a competition over computational capability, research talent and technological leadership. Whether policymakers find that competition comfortable is largely irrelevant. It exists canberradaily.com.au

regardless. Trump’s instinct appears to reflect this strategic reality. His Administration’s emphasis on maintaining American leadership recognises that AI development does not occur in a vacuum. Decisions made in Washington influence the relative position of the United States in a contest that includes major powers and emerging technology centres around the world. Australia occupies a particularly interesting position within this debate because it has traditionally benefited from technological innovation developed elsewhere. The country has world-class researchers and strong institutions, but it is not currently a frontier AI power on the scale of the United States. That creates a temptation toward regulation. When a nation is primarily a consumer rather than a creator of transformative technologies, the perceived costs of restriction appear manageable. The danger is that regulatory enthusiasm becomes a substitute for technological ambition. Governance becomes the objective rather than a means to an objective. Australia should be careful not to fall into that trap. None of this means that AI (or SI) should exist beyond the law. Existing legal principles remain

canberradaily.com.au

applicable. Fraud remains unlawful. Intellectual property remains protected. Contracts remain enforceable. National security concerns remain legitimate. Courts, regulators and governments already possess substantial powers to address specific harms as they arise. The validity of this point was even acknowledged in the White House Accord, confirming that “Over time, it may make sense to codify these steps into laws or regulations.” Regardless, what is unnecessary is the construction of an entirely new bureaucratic architecture based largely on fears about hypothetical future developments. The challenge facing policymakers is not to design a perfect system of control. It is to avoid suppressing one of the most promising technologies ever developed. That requires intellectual humility. It requires recognising the limits of governmental foresight. Most importantly, it requires acknowledging that the future prosperity generated by artificial intelligence may depend less on the wisdom of regulators than on the freedom of innovators. The debate between Washington and Canberra ultimately reflects two different visions of progress. One assumes that technological advancement should proceed only under close supervision. The

other assumes that discovery is most productive when experimentation is allowed to flourish. History has generally favoured the latter approach. If AI fulfils even a fraction of its promise, future generations will look back on this moment as a turning point. The question will not be whether regulators acted cautiously enough. The question will be whether societies had the confidence to embrace a technology capable of transforming the human condition. On that question, the argument for freedom is considerably stronger than the argument for restraint. Dejan Hinic is a financial and investment expert operating from Belgrade, Serbia. Limitless Strength & Wellness combines training, recovery and community at its Fyshwick facility.

More than a gym: Finding your strength at Limitless For many people, the hardest part of joining a gym isn’t the workout itself. It’s walking through the door for the first time. At Limitless Strength & Wellness, creating a place where people feel comfortable doing exactly that is at the heart of the business. Located on Whyalla Street in Fyshwick, Limitless combines strength and conditioning, personal training and sporting performance with a range of recovery and wellness services, all within a community-focused environment. The philosophy is straightforward: fitness should be for everybody. Whether someone is stepping into a gym for the first time, trying to become stronger and healthier or working towards their next sporting goal, the focus is on providing the coaching and support they need to progress. Rather than leaving members to figure things out for themselves, experienced coaches work directly with clients, with training and programming able to be tailored to individual goals and abilities. The facility offers small-group strength classes, sweat sessions (conditioning), one-on-one personal training, corporate and strength and conditioning for sporting groups.

20

8 October 2026

But training is only one part of the equation. Limitless has put recovery alongside strength and fitness, with infrared sauna, cold water therapy and compression therapy available at the Fyshwick facility. Physiotherapy & Chiropractor Massage therapy, dietitian services and an Evolt 360 body scanner also form part of its broader approach to health. It means someone can complete a strength or conditioning session and also have access to services designed to support their recovery, rather than treating the two as entirely separate parts of their routine. That combination reflects the Limitless philosophy that improving health and performance is about more than what happens during a workout. Just as important, however, is the environment in which that work happens. Limitless places a strong emphasis on community, aiming to create a gym without egos or unnecessary pressure. Instead, members train alongside people with different backgrounds, abilities and goals, supported by coaches and a community that wants to see them improve. It’s an approach intended to make the gym accessible to someone starting from scratch

while still providing the coaching and facilities needed by experienced athletes looking to improve their performance. There are flexible membership options depending on how people want to train, including combinations of strength classes, conditioning, recovery, personal training and open gym access. For those unsure whether it is the right environment for them, there’s no need to commit straight away. Limitless encourages prospective members to experience the facility first, with a free class and recovery session currently available and no joining fees or lock-in contracts. Ultimately, Limitless Strength & Wellness is built around a simple idea: getting stronger and healthier is easier when you have good people around you. Whether the goal is lifting more, moving better, improving sporting performance or simply feeling healthier, the team wants members to have the coaching, recovery and community to help them get there. Limitless Strength & Wellness is at 20 Whyalla Street, Fyshwick. To book a trial, contact Cindy on 0417 888 993 or visit limitlesscanberra. com.au

The three questions every business must answer in 2026

Pandr helps businesses find the right balance between people, AI and automation.

Most businesses do not have a people problem or a technology problem. They have work sitting in the wrong place. Business owners are carrying tasks they should no longer be doing. Good employees are buried in repetitive administration. New software is being added without fixing the underlying workflow. AI is being discussed everywhere, but very few businesses have a practical plan for where it should actually be used. At Pandr, we believe every business needs to answer three questions. First, what can and should be automated using AI? The best opportunities are usually high-volume, repetitive and rules-based tasks. Think data entry, reporting, follow-ups, document handling, scheduling and moving information between systems. Second, what needs a person, and when should they step in? Technology is useful, but people still matter when work requires judgement, accountability, 24

8 October 2026

relationships, empathy or the ability to manage exceptions. Third, of the work that needs people, what can be done offshore? If a task needs a capable person but does not require that person to be sitting inside your Australian office, it may be delivered by a dedicated offshore teammate for a fraction of the cost. This is not about replacing people or chasing every new AI trend. It is about designing the work properly, then choosing the right combination of people, AI and automation to deliver it. For gym owners, fitness brands, studios and growing service businesses, getting these decisions right can free up time, improve service and create room to grow without continually adding local overhead. Pandr is offering businesses a free People + AI assessment to help identify the hidden opportunities inside their operations. Scan the QR code to get started. canberradaily.com.au

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 23)

You’ll filter yourself out of kindness. Maybe you steer the conversation to areas you know the other person will feel good about. Not everyone can do this as graciously as you. You’ll be reminded that sometimes love is accepting another person’s rough edges without taking offense.

Small gestures convey affection – like changing your plans or letting them have the last piece of pie. Love is sometimes putting the other person first. “Sometimes” is the operative word. Because if you’re always putting the other person first, you might lose the “you” who’s giving the love.

There are times you can understand a person’s joys and sorrows without articulating them. Those times are becoming more frequent as you get to know a person. The process itself is an act of love and is especially fulfilling when the person you are learning understands it as such. You treat people well whether they are your friends or strangers. You treat people well when you don’t have to. Treating people well is your default setting. It seems like a pretty basic tenet of human decency, yet you see it violated daily – one of the many reasons you are so needed everywhere.

You will enjoy the burst of energy that comes when it’s clear that people believe in you. This week they demonstrate this more than once by supporting you in word, action and even with their wallet. Can you blame them? What you stand for and work toward is so easy to get behind. When things are working just fine, why would a person want to rearrange them? Once something works, you have enough security to play with it. When the machine is broken, you repair it. When it runs, you start wondering what else it can do. This week, it sends you to change everything up. Some people raise the standard by what they do. Others raise it by changing what everyone around them can do. Being the best person on the team and making the team better are two different talents. This week you’ll score points and you also create openings for others to score. This week’s challenge involves a friendship that operates in an outgrown power arrangement. One person pursues, one accommodates; one decides, one follows; one has status, money or access the other wants. You’ll see the arrangement more clearly and change your participation in it. Pluto makes the question of group dynamics especially interesting. You now recognise that being influential doesn’t require being in charge. You accomplish more through backing someone else’s idea or just working quietly with your head down on the thing you want to work on. You’ve been asking a number of “why” questions like: Why does this person get to me? Why am I afraid of that particular outcome? Pluto turning direct will have you testing theories and putting what you learn to good use. You’ll stop asking why and start figuring out how to make the wanted changes.

The art of framing animals by GEORGIA CURRY Some people go to the Royal Canberra Show for carnival rides, but multimedia artist Brenda Runnegar goes there to photograph unsuspecting farm animals for her art. Even though this Border Leicester sheep (pictured) is already dressed in, well, sheep’s clothing, Brenda Photoshops in 18th century fashion as part of her exhibition, Animal Portraits. “I started taking photos of animals – which is no easy task – and I went to the Bungendore show, the Royal Canberra Show, and the Braidwood Show,” Brenda said. “I have an old book of 18th century American folk art paintings of portraits with people in very ornate collars and brooches, I’ve had it for ages but they’re just so inspirational these characters.” Traditionally, 18th century American folk art depicts rural daily life in the early American colonies – now it has a modern anthropomorphic twist.

Using Photoshop, Brenda scans the circa-1794 paintings (now well past copyright) and adds her own animal headshots. “Looking at the pictures, I just got inspired to do it and it seemed appropriate when I started playing around with it,” said Brenda, who’s been creating art (painting, sculpture, photography and textiles) for 40+ years. “I take the photos and I cut off their heads digitally and try them in different outfits and different poses until I think it clicks.” Surprisingly, the animals – especially the dogs – suit their outfits perfectly (one domestic canine looks like he’s smiling but he’s just panting). Brenda also depicts pet cats in period costume but they definitely don’t smile (it’s a cat’s prerogative). “That’s their nature,” Brenda said, who features her own Siamese cat, Taj, in the exhibition (the only portrait that has colour to show off Taj’s blue eyes). “I’ve also used a white kitten from a friend of

mine, it seemed appropriate to pair her with a beautiful dress and handbag.” Animal Portraits comprises a series of 11 framed composite digital works representing pets and favourite animals as majestic figures in historical paintings. The exhibition is at Belconnen Arts Centre from 16 October to 29 November.

by BERNIE RYAN Bookshops across Canberra will come alive on Saturday 10 October for Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD), with author events, children’s activities, special offers and community celebrations taking place across the region. The Australian Booksellers Association’s (ABA) annual national celebration invites Australians to visit their local bookshop, connect with their community and discover something new to read. To help you find the bookstores you may not yet have come to love, the new Canberra Bookshop Trail is officially launching on Love Your Bookshop Day. It will bring together 23 bookshops across Canberra and surrounding areas. Visitors to bookstores will be able to pick up a physical trail map and make their way around stores, including Paperchain, The Book Cow, Impact Comics, Asia Bookroom, the National Library of Australia Bookshop and more. It is designed to encourage Canberrans to

discover and support local booksellers and explore some shops they may not have visited before. LYBD celebrates the unique role booksellers play in helping readers discover not only their next favourite book, but the people and conversations that come with it. Owner of the popular The Book Cow in Kingston Peter Arnaudo said that they have a full weekend of activity planned to celebrate LYBD. These include a book launch, mini ‘book rave’ in Green Square, magician and face painting, story time and even a scavenger hunt and the opportunity to find ‘Wally’ in-store. “We’ll have a scavenger hunt up and down Jardine Street where you’ve got to find your favourite book character,” he said. “The Gruff [Gruffalo] will be hidden in different shop windows. Inside The Book Cow is more fun, Mr Arnaudo added. “In the shop we’ll also have a ‘Find Wally’ game where Wally will be hidden somewhere.”

Love Your Bookshop Day returns

Owner of The Book Cow, Peter Arnaudo, holds the Canberra Bookshop Trail Map.

“There’ll be a golden ticket to 12 months’ worth of audio books as well, hidden somewhere in the shop.” Mr Arnaudo said that as Canberrans love their books, he is confident the weekend will be a huge success. “The 10th of October is a great opportunity for people to come out and visit brick-and-mortar bookshops in their local community because all bookshops, really, are about community,” he said. This week Michael Popple reviews three impressive crime fiction novels with unusual protagonists. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog, unseenlibrary.com

King’s Ransom by Matthew Reilly Pan Macmillan Australia, $34.99

When the world’s richest man is held hostage, five of the best private detectives in America are summoned to solve the kidnapper’s sinister riddles. Amongst the investigators is Sam Speedman, a brilliant detective with a unique personality who jumps at this challenge. However, Sam soon discovers that he is up against a criminal mastermind, one who might be even smarter than him. Legendary Australian author Matthew Reilly unleashes another high-octane and utterly addictive novel with King’s Ransom. The awesome sequel to The Detective, King’s Ransom is an outrageously over-the-top thriller that you will not be able to stop reading. Highly recommended!

We Chase Shadows by Richard Osman Viking, $34.99 After their exciting first case, the unlikely team of Amy, Rosie and Steve have formed the We Solve Murders detective agency. Hired to investigate the seemingly unmotivated slaying of a bodyguard in Italy, the team begin looking for an elusive killer with big ambitions. But when danger hits close to home the case becomes personal, forcing them to embark on a worldwide hunt for justice. This is another exceptional book from comedian Richard Osman. Blending a complex mystery with Osman’s distinctive British humour, We Chase Shadows is a captivating novel that will keep you guessing until the end.

Scion by James Islington Text Publishing, $34.99 In the far future, eliminating the ultra-wealthy is big business and genetically enhanced assassin Azure is the best there is. However, her next job may be her hardest as Azure is employed to protect, not to kill. Blackmailed into guarding a mysterious client, Azure finds herself being hunted by an implacable enemy, who is determined to destroy them no matter the cost. James Islington dives into the cyberpunk fiction genre with this exciting techno-thriller. Featuring a great story, Scion brings together intense action and a futuristic setting for a brilliant, fast-paced read. An excellent novel from one of Australia’s best fantasy authors.

Acclaimed David Williamson play returns to Canberra after 26 years by NICHOLAS FULLER Opening this week, Mockingbird is staging one of leading Australian playwright David Williamson’s most acclaimed plays for the first Canberra performance in 26 years. Face to Face, directed by Céline Oudin, runs at the Belconnen Arts Centre from 7 to 17 October. Canberra last saw the play in March 2000 on the original production’s national tour. Considered “one of Williamson’s most important and innovative plays” by critic John Shand, Face to Face is the first play in Williamson’s ‘Jack Manning trilogy’, exploring community conferencing –bringing together the victims and perpetrators of a crime to attempt some kind of reconciliation. When Glen, a young construction worker, is sacked, he rams his boss’s Mercedes. Instead of going to court, he takes part in a community conference with his boss, workmates, family, and other affected people.

“At the beginning, it seems to be quite straightforward: a so-called simple incident where the perpetrator is supposed to acknowledge his responsibility and the wrong he’s done, and eventually apologise to his victim,” Oudin says. “But as the play goes on, and as Jack asks more and more questions … secrets are revealed, you realise that the other characters present in the room are not all that clean either themselves, and they have to confront their own mistakes and wrongdoings.” Williamson became interested in restorative justice when the founders of Transformative Justice Australia contacted him in 1995. He trained as a conference convener to better understand the process, and based the play on four real conferences. When the play premiered at the Ensemble Theatre in 1999, Sydney Morning Herald critic Bryce Hallett praised it as “a fascinating and, at times, engrossing work – a 90-minute documentary drama which puts store in a method of justice founded on conciliation, concern and emotional honesty”. A subsequent

Melbourne production starred Guy Pearce, while the play was adapted into an award-winning film in 2011. Sachin R Nayak plays Jack Manning, the conference facilitator: detective, psychologist, and counsellor all in one, observing body language and how people react. “It’s like an onion … he’s literally peeling one layer after the other to find out the actual truth. He understands a lot of things people are hiding.” The cast sit in a row of chairs ‘face to face’ with the spectators. The audience becomes almost another participant in the conference, as if they are in the room physically, “witnessing the conversation, and all the different stakes, tensions and relationships between the characters”, Oudin explains. Despite the play’s serious themes, the audience will “have a really good time”, Oudin says. Williamson is a perennial favourite; this is the second Williamson play performed in Canberra this year: Canberra Rep produced Travelling North in June. Face to Face, Mockingbird Theatrics, The Studio, Belconnen Arts Centre, 7–17 October. Tickets: belcoarts.com.au/face-to-face/

Ageing oil magnate Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise) wakes in his classic mansion with his much loved, but clearly sick and dying pet cat. In collusion with U.S. President Compson (John Goodman), Digger’s company Rockwell United drills across Alaska and Greenland. Soon, Digger’s drilling team informs him that they have dislodged a massive ice shelf which is heading to Europe, and he quickly starts a strategy to reframe the impending disaster. This dark satire riffs heavily on Dr. Strangelove (1964), swapping in the same environmental anxieties as Don’t Look Up (2021), with visual splashings of the surrealist dystopian Brazil (1985). The acting is loud, broad and boorish, and

almost unbearable to a certain point when the movie starts to level up and continue its big swing. While its director insists the opposite, critics may find the story preachy, pointing blame toward a political side, especially due to the lead character’s narcissistic and deluded worldview. While exploring the political and commercial machinations behind a worldthreatening environmental disaster, the movie does make a point about what is worth more than oil in the face of the end of the world. Verdict: An amazing cross-media experience that keeps on levelling up to an unnerving finale. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Dendy Cinemas.

Why can friends so easily discard us?

CO

NTRIBU

TO

with DR VIVIENNE LEWIS

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

One of the most painful experiences in life is realising that someone you considered a close friend no longer seems interested in the friendship. Many people describe feeling confused, hurt and bewildered by how quickly a friendship can appear to disappear. Unlike romantic breakups, friendship endings often happen

quietly, without explanation, leaving us wondering what went wrong. The truth is that friends do not always “discard” us in the way it feels. Often, friendships fade because people’s lives change. Careers become demanding, children arrive, relationships take priority, or people simply move in different directions. The friend who was your closest confidant at school may have very little in common with you as an adult. That said, some friendships do end more abruptly. Friendships are often built on convenience, proximity and shared interests. When those things disappear, some people make little effort to maintain the connection, and that feels personal. Part of the pain comes from the

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD YOUR TEETH PROFESIONALLY CLEANED?

assumptions we make. Many of us believe that if we care deeply about someone, they must feel the same way about us. Unfortunately, friendships are not always equally valued. One person may see the relationship as a lifelong bond, while the other sees it as a friendship for a particular stage of life. Neither person is necessarily wrong, but the mismatch can be heartbreaking. Social media has not helped. Seeing a former friend spending time with others and posting happy photos can quickly make us feel excluded or replaced. Remember that what we see online often fuels our insecurities more than it reflects reality. What hurts most is that friendship loss is rarely acknowledged. There are no sympathy cards when a friendship ends. No accepted period of mourning. Yet the grief can be every bit as significant as the end of a romantic relationship. In some cases, it can be even harder because there is no clear ending and no opportunity for closure.

If you find yourself feeling discarded, try not to immediately assume that you are unworthy or unlikeable. Most friendship losses are not a reflection of your value as a person. More often, they reflect changing circumstances, priorities, personalities or life stages. One of the most helpful things you can do is pay attention to your self-talk. It is easy to tell yourself, “I wasn’t important to them,” or “There must be something wrong with me.” These thoughts feel true when we are hurting, but that does not mean they are accurate. Instead, try reminding yourself that: Not every friendship is meant to last forever; This friendship ending does not erase the good times we shared; People can care about me and still move in a different direction. While losing a friend can be deeply painful, it does not mean you have been discarded. Sometimes it simply means that one chapter has ended, making room for the next.

Walking for Aunt Liv: Annie turns grief into action by BERNIE RYAN On Sunday 11 October, at just 20 years old, Canberra student Annie Turchini is preparing to walk around Lake Burley Griffin for the second year in a row, joining others in the Canberra Walk4BrainCancer Canberra. The Arts/Law ANU student will be walking in memory of her beloved ‘Aunt Liv’, who died from glioblastoma in February 2023. Walk4BrainCancer (W4BC) is the flagship fundraising initiative of Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, helping fund research aimed at accelerating progress against brain cancer and

bringing new discoveries closer to patients. The W4BC Canberra event has a fundraising target of $80,000 and will bring the local community together at Upper Commonwealth Place, with participants walking around Lake Burley Griffin before a BBQ, music and family entertainment. Annie’s aunt, Olivia ‘Liv’ Moore, wife of Matthew and mum to Milly and Max, died the day before she would have turned 45 and only ten months after her diagnosis. Aunt Liv was Annie’s mum Elle’s younger sister and the middle of three sisters, including her Aunt Laura.

Annie Turchini holds a photo of her Aunt Liv, Uncle Matthew and cousins Milly and Max.

“Glioblastoma is one of the most, if not the most aggressive form of brain cancer and it’s completely ripped my family apart,” Annie says. “I know that so many other people across Australia deal with such similar struggles and I want to be part of the movement to help find a cure, continue research and help us continue to care for and support families and people struggling with the disease. “She was like a second mother to me because she and my mum were so close.” A lifelong PE teacher who dedicated her career to health, fitness and helping others, Annie says that her Aunt Liv was one of her biggest influences, and taught her lessons about love, kindness, determination and strength. “She was the most beautiful woman and one of my biggest role models,” she says. Now, Annie is turning her grief into action. Returning to W4BC Canberra, Annie is aiming to raise at least $2,000 for brain cancer research, driven by the hope that research can give future patients and their families more time, more treatment options and, ultimately, better outcomes. Annie says that as much as her aunt’s death has devastated their close family, it has also strengthened their family bond

in other ways. She says that her uncle Matthew and cousins have relocated to live closer to the rest of the family in the northern suburbs of Sydney. That sense of community is also something Annie has found through W4BC, connecting with others who understand the impact of brain cancer and loss while giving her a tangible way to contribute to research that could help families in the future. “I think walking with other people who have experienced this, who understand this, who have witnessed the heartbreak of seeing someone they love lose themselves to such a killer disease and then continue to honour them in such a similar way and fight for a disease that has no cure ... is really heartwarming,” she says. “Community is everything. We will love and honour Aunt Liv forever, and she will always be my biggest inspiration.” Annie invites others to support the community who are working to prevent the grief and sadness in other families that her family has known, via her personal donation page: my.walk4braincancer. com.au/walk4braincancercanberra-2026/ annie-turchini
