Happy New Year to all our readers at the Canberra Weekly. I hope you had a good Christmas.

A Prime Minister is meant to lead the country.

If anything demands a federal Royal Commission to ensure a whole-of-government response, it is the Bondi massacre of 15 innocent Australian Jewish citizens. What could be more serious than that?

After the massacre of 53 innocent Muslim Kiwis in Christchurch,

New Zealand, Labor PM Jacinda Ardern showed real compassion and leadership by calling a Royal Commission within 20 hours.

It is an interesting aside that some survivors of that atrocity have since called on Albanese to immediately establish a federal Royal Commission here, saying their Jewish Australian brothers and sisters deserve nothing less, and that the New Zealand Royal Commission helped immensely in the healing process for them.

Albanese, however, seems to have trouble even saying the words “antisemitism” or “Islamic extremism”.

It’s pathetic.

His weakness in failing to act decisively to stop hate speech and the increasingly aggressive acts of antisemitism on our streets over the past two years has allowed this evil hatred to fester and expand. His response has been to call for stricter

gun laws and a government inquiry into whether the security agencies could have done more.

But the real issue that needs addressing is the vile antisemitism in our community, and it needs to be confronted urgently. A Royal Commission would do this.

Now I must say, few things surprise me these days, but I have been amazed and saddened by how many ordinary Australians have either been complicit in antisemitic acts or, in many instances, have actively supported them. This includes chanting slogans such as “globalise the intifada” and “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” (that is, the elimination of Jews so that there are no Jews left in what was once Israel).

The federal Greens seem to go out of their way to demonise Israel and to stymie any attempts

to adequately address the issue of antisemitism in this country. If the Greens think I am wrong, they merely have to support a federal Royal Commission. Unfortunately, I just cannot see that happening.

Recent exposures of the goingson in several Labor branches in Sydney have also revealed a growing outbreak of antisemitism in certain sections of the ALP. I fear for, and feel desperately sorry for, great old ALP stalwarts like my friend, former Labor minister Mike Kelly. Thank God for people like him who are prepared to do battle with their own party on this issue.

I would hope this becomes a defining issue that forces Albo to either step up and hold a Royal Commission, or see him drummed out of politics. At this point in Australia’s history, we need a strong PM, not a weakling.

What About Me? The Brindabella electorate

When I was Member for Brindabella, a common refrain from Tuggeranong locals was that they felt left out of the infrastructure projects taking place around Canberra, hence the reference to the 2004 Shannon Noll song What About Me?, which goes on to say, “It isn’t fair”, and that’s exactly how many Brindabella voters feel.

I spoke to Greens MLA Laura Nuttall recently about what she hears when she speaks to locals around the

electorate and you can listen to the Bite-sized politics podcast to hear her views.

I was always of the opinion that Tuggeranong needed a bit of a destination project: a facility that would bring people from all over Canberra down south, and while they were here, they might get coffee from local cafes, get petrol, or grab a meal.

For many of us, the proposed new ice sports facility would hopefully perform that role. However, I, for one, am becoming increasingly sceptical that Tuggeranong will ever see it built.

The ice sports community first raised the need for a new facility around 2015. It became an ACT Labor election commitment in 2020, with plans for two international standard ice sheets for various ice sports, dedicated curling sheets and an indoor rock-climbing facility with capacity for up to 3600 spectators.

The developer selected by the government has argued that the $16.2 million in funding was not sufficient.

The developers have further argued for a change of location, which, at this point, the government has ruled out.

The timeline for completion is quite unclear and has been for a number of years. I remember asking about this in past Estimates Hearings and it seems we are no further along. I have been gone from the Assembly for well over a year and there has been little progress to report.

We also have promised road infrastructure projects that seem to take forever, the duplication of Athllon Drive between Drakeford Drive and Sulwood Drive being just one example: promised for years, but very little actual progress. The biggest changes I have noticed have been a succession of great big signs near the Sulwood/Athllon roundabout telling

me that duplication is coming.

Of course, in Tuggeranong, we also have our beautiful lake, which sadly suffers badly from bluegreen algae, and despite millions in government spending, it does not seem to be improving in terms of water quality.

To be fair, there have been some improvements in the foreshore paths over the past few years, as well as work done on the Tuggeranong Town Park playground, and the lengthy closure of Sulwood Drive to re-pave.

But the courtyard area linking the lake to South.Point (will always be Hyperdome in my mind) remains a bit of a hot concrete wasteland, with the need for quite large, established trees to provide a bit of shade. And more frequent weeding of the garden beds around the area wouldn’t go astray either.

We’re pressing pause for a little while. Flute will be closed over the holidays, bu we’ll be back baking, pouring and serving from 28 January 2026.

Mint marks 60 years of decimal currency with first 2026 coins

Julius Jungerth struck the first coin minted anywhere in the world this year.

The Royal Australian Mint has marked the 60th anniversary of Australia’s switch to decimal currency with the launch of its 2026 Mintmark Suite, drawing hundreds of coin enthusiasts to Canberra.

More than 500 people gathered at the Mint on New Year’s Day to witness the striking of the

first 2026 coin anywhere in the world.

That honour went to eight-year-old Julius Jungerth, from Melbourne, who minted the inaugural collectible coin celebrating six decades since Australia replaced pounds, shillings, and pence with dollars and cents.

“It’s really exciting to be the first person to make their coin today,” Julius said. “I can’t wait to show my friends when I get home.”

Australia’s decimal changeover on 14 February 1966 is regarded as one of the most successful currency transitions in history, aided by the famous “Dollar Bill” campaign and designs that are still used today.

The commemorative design unites the animals featured on the original 1966 coin designs — the feathertail glider (or sugar glider possum), frilled-neck lizard, echidna, lyrebird, platypus, emu, and kangaroo, as well as the Southern Cross — on a single coin.

Stuart Devlin AO CMG, a goldsmith and

silversmith, won a national design competition in 1964 to create Australia’s first decimal currency.

He designed all of Australia’s circulating coins (including the now withdrawn one- and two-cent pieces), except for the $2 coin.

Over his career, he designed coins for 36 countries, as well as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program, comprising eight gold, 16 silver, and 28 bronze coins, and the Order of Australia medals.

Mint CEO Emily Martin said today’s event was a fitting way to celebrate a milestone that shaped modern Australia.

“For many Australians, the changeover to decimal currency in 1966 was more than a new way to count — it was a symbol of progress and optimism, as well as striking a piece of our own identity,” Ms Martin said.

“This year’s Mintmark Suite celebrates that spirit of ingenuity and national pride that still shines through our coins today.”

Once minted, the first coin of 2026 was placed in a handcrafted display incorporating parquetry salvaged from the Mint’s heritagelisted floor during recent maintenance works, linking the anniversary to the building’s own history.

More than books – but less than a library?

by NICHOLAS FULLER Canberra prides itself on being Australia’s most highly educated city — yet its public library holdings

are shallower and narrower than they were a generation ago.

Public libraries, in city and government services minister Tara Cheyne’s words today, are now seen as

More than a place to borrow books, but is Canberra losing something vital in its public libraries?

“more than books and other items”; they are “about connection, learning, and community”.

“More than books and other items” — but if not books and other items, what, precisely, are libraries for?

Libraries ACT’s collection has more than 2.5 million physical items (including books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, and music) — but there are some astonishing gaps.

Writers who should be fundamental to a library collection are absent.

Libraries ACT do not hold any of George Bernard Shaw’s plays in print. (There are audiobooks of two productions, one set of study notes, and a Canberra Rep program.) There are two audiobooks of Noël Coward plays and a recent biography. For Brecht: a 1979 edition of The Threepenny Opera and an audiobook of The Life of Galileo. There are no plays

by Ben Jonson, Racine, Molière, Sheridan, Strindberg, Lorca, J. B. Priestley, or Tom Stoppard, and neither Chekhov nor Pirandello in English.

Poetry is likewise a wasteland: Shelley only on audiobook, and no volumes of Byron, Tennyson, or Browning.

No copies of Fielding’s Tom Jones, nor Tristram

Terrance Dicks’s Doctor Who novelisations, which helped introduce a generation of boys to reading, are now entirely on audio.

Popular twentieth-century writers have been culled.

Reginald Hill’s literary crime novels (the last of which appeared in 2010) are only held as audiobooks or DVDs, not in print. There are nearly 30 Ruth Rendells on audio — and five in print (including a book about cats). There are a dozen Simenons — four in large print, two in Italian, and four audiobooks. There are none of George Macdonald Fraser’s Flashman books, and Tom Sharpe is not represented at all. Yet there should be print copies of all these; there used to be.

Libraries ACT, in fact, no longer seems to centre a reading culture.

They once held works and editions going back to the 1940s and 1950s, an irreplaceable collection accumulated over half a century, freely available for anyone to borrow. In the late 1990s, as a teenager, I could read my way through the corpus (or corpses) of mid-century detective fiction. That would be impossible for a teenager today. At the turn of the millennium, Libraries ACT closed its stack collection and disposed of hundreds, if not thousands, of books.

In place of depth and continuity, libraries have become community facilities with dance and yoga spaces, recording studios, kitchens, and meeting rooms.

Libraries, it seems, are now justified by social outcomes — not by the preservation and transmission of written culture.

But libraries’ most important social outcomes are literacy, knowledge, culture, curiosity, imagination.

Their purpose is for ordinary people to read deeply and widely, not just the popular writers of the day but to develop their own taste, and to educate themselves far beyond the syllabus, using public resources.

The collapse of Canberra’s second-hand bookshop ecosystem has also been a blow. Once they abounded: in Mawson, Hawker, Curtin, Ainslie, Chifley, Kingston, Civic, and Fyshwick. But Gaslight, Beyond Q, Winch Books, Barry’s Books, Miriam Brown’s, Beaky’s, and Kanga Books (to name but a few) have all closed and disappeared.

This month, the ANU became a university campus without a bookshop when Harry Hartog closed there. Since Alexander Fax Booksellers shut their Mawson shop to move online last month, the number of second-hand bookshops in Canberra can now

be counted on the fingers of one hand: Canty’s in Fyshwick, Book Lore in Lyneham, Lifeline’s Book Lovers Lane, and a sprinkling of op shops.

We have seen the impact of that absence.

Canberra school students’ literacy levels are worse than they were two decades ago, the ABC reported in 2023: a third of 15-year-olds fell below the national proficient standard for reading.

And yet this is Canberra, the nation’s education capital, the city with Australia’s highest proportion of graduates.

If we are to be an educated city, then public libraries with rich collections are a fundamental civic good — a legacy handed down over generations.

As Roger Chao wrote in an AIMN article this month: “The mission is to hold and share our cumulative inheritance of knowledge and imagination in a way that is as generous, as democratic, as truthful and as humane as we can make it. … [A library] is a place where the dead speak, where the living listen and answer back, and where the not-yet-born are quietly being equipped, whether they know it or not, to join the conversation.”

Canberra’s favourite reads in 2025 most borrowed non-fiction title of the year, ranking fifth.

Crime and mystery were popular, particularly books

by Dervla McTiernan and Richard Osman.

Young adult readers gravitated toward fantasy, dystopian fiction, and graphic novels, led by Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping and Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

Canberrans borrowed more than 1.4 million items from Libraries ACT in 2025. A mix of literary fiction, crime, and cookbooks dominated this year’s reading habits.

The most borrowed title across all formats was Orbital by Samantha Harvey. Winner of the 2024 Booker Prize, it follows six astronauts over a single day aboard a space station.

Local crime writer Chris Hammer’s The Valley — a mystery set in a remote mountain community — claimed second place overall and topped the ACT author category. Hammer placed three more titles in the top five ACT author list.

Summer drownings rise amid pleas for water safety

by MAEVE BANNISTER, AAP A man has died in the latest beach drowning and searches for a two others missing in the water have been called off, as authorities plead for people to be sensible over summer.

The death follows five drownings across Australian beaches since New Year’s Eve. ACT and NSW Police along with multiple emergency service agencies were called to Greenpatch Beach at the southern shore of Jervis Bay on NSW’s south coast just before 5pm on Saturday 3 January.

There had been reports of multiple people struggling to stay afloat in rough conditions.

A 34-year-old NSW man was brought back to the beach and responders started CPR but he was declared dead at the scene. ACT Policing will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Paramedics attended to three other people but none required further medical attention.

A search for a 16-year-old boy, who went missing after a boat carrying him and two other men capsized near Barrenjoey Headland on Sydney’s northern beaches, has ended.

A 47-year-old man was pulled from the water and treated by paramedics, but he died at the scene, while a 45-year-old man was winched to safety by helicopter.

Rescue crews have also called off a search for a 22-year-old man, who encountered trouble while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney on New Year’s Day. Patrols will continue at the two areas for the missing pair.

NSW Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said 10 people have drowned in the state this summer and a majority of those incidents were avoidable.

“The thing that really frustrates emergency services is being put in a position where they try and make conditions safe, and then some people

make a decision to do otherwise,” he said on Sunday.

“It really has to be a partnership, and we’re imploring people to do the right thing: be sensible, swim between the flags, swim at patrolled locations, know your swimming ability, and don’t take unnecessary risks.”

Royal Lifesaving Australia reports the national summer drowning toll, which counts the number of deaths since 1 December 2025, is 29 as of Saturday 3 January.

This is less than on the same date last year when 46 people had drowned.

Last summer, 139 people lost their lives to drowning across Australia between 1 December 2024 and 28 February 2025, the equivalent of at least one drowning death every day.

Authorities are urging the public to make water safety a priority by preparing before they leave home and remaining vigilant around the water.

Rough conditions up and down the east coast have required surf lifesavers to perform hundreds of rescues across the nation’s beaches since Christmas Day. Over the New Year period, the risk of drowning is three times greater than at any other time of the year.

Canberra’s most popular baby names for 2025 Evelyn (girl) and Oliver were the most popular ACT baby names in 2025, according to birth registration data from Access Canberra.

Top 10 girl names: 1 Evelyn =6 Isla 2 Hazel =6 Matila 3 Grace =6 Olivia =4 Charlotte 9 Amelia =4 Lily 10 Eleanor Evelyn topped the list for the first time after appearing in the top 10 six times before. Hazel and Grace rounded out the top three, and Charlotte and Lily tied for fourth place.

Lily returned to the top 10 after last appearing in 2012.

Olivia, which tied for sixth place with Isla and Matilda, has appeared in every top 10 list since 1998, except 2016. Last year’s number one, Amelia, slipped to ninth, but remained in the top 10.

Snakes Alive! 2026 One of Canberra’s favourite annual events, Snakes Alive!, returns from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 January 2026 at the Banksia Centre, Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Presented by the ACT Herpetological Association, the strictly ticketed event features live displays and handling of snakes, lizards and turtles, with frogs also on show. Each one-hour session includes a venomous snake display or python feeding. Sessions run daily at 10–11am, 11:30am–12:30pm, 1–2pm and 2:30–3:30pm. Easy homemade icy poles for summer Melon icy poles Serves: 4 Ingredients: • 200g chopped melon, peel and seeds removed (try seedless watermelon, honeydew or rockmelon) • 50ml coconut water • 1 tbsp honey

Pine-o-coco popsicle Serves: 8 Ingredients: • 4 cups chopped fresh pineapple • 2/3 cup coconut milk • 4 ½ tbsp lime juice Method In a blender, puree all ingredients.

Pour mixture into moulds and freeze for an hour (until they get ‘slushy’).

Insert sticks and freeze for 7 hours until firm.

Method Blitz the coconut water, melon and honey together in a blender.

Pop into ice block moulds with a stick and freeze for at least four hours, or ideally overnight.

Frozen banana popsicles Serves: 16 Ingredients: • 4 large bananas • cup thick vanilla custard • 2 cups vanilla ice-cream (about 350g) • A few drops yellow food colouring, optional

Method Peel, chop and freeze the bananas for 3-4 hours until frozen. Place bananas in a food processor or blender until chopped. Add the custard and ice cream and process until smooth. Add food colouring if you want.

Divide mixture evenly among moulds. Insert sticks.

Freeze 8 hours or overnight.

Chocolate -covered watermelon wedges Another refreshing treat to help deal with the heat, this time with a little something extra sweet.

Ingredients: • Watermelon cut into wedges • 1 cup block chocolate, chopped • Sea salt, to taste

Holding the rind, dip each wedge into the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off.

Sprinkle with salt immediately, then return to the wax paper to set. Repeat with remaining wedges.

Serve immediately or store in the freezer until ready to serve.

Method: Line a baking sheet or large plate with wax paper. Arrange the watermelon wedges so they don’t touch, pat dry with paper towel, then freeze for 30 minutes.

While the watermelon chills, melt the chocolate using a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, stirring constantly until smooth.

Country and hip-hop stars to headline Multicultural Festival Country music icon Troy Cassar-Daley and hiphop phenomenon L-FRESH the Lion have been announced as headline acts for the 2026 National Multicultural Festival.

Cassar-Daley, a proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man, is one of the most decorated artists in Australian country music. His career spans decades, with numerous gold and platinum records and 31 songs reaching number one on the charts. His heartfelt music style explores “the everyday triumphs, struggles, and joys of Australians from the city to the outback”.

He will perform on Sunday afternoon, supported

by Canberra artist Tahalianna Soward-Mahanga, a proud Wiradjuri and Tongan singer known for her appearances on The Voice.

“I love this festival, it always makes me feel very proud to play as a person who is a product of multiculturalism, being Indigenous and Maltese means bringing different worlds together, and doing that with

music makes it very special,” Cassar-Daley said.

Hip-hop artist L-FRESH the Lion will take the stage on Friday night. Born in Sydney to Punjabi-Sikh parents, he has built a reputation for blending sharp lyricism with themes of identity, culture and resilience to create a raw, uplifting sound. He has toured with Nas and shared stages with artists such as Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Hilltop Hoods, and Sir Elton John.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to the Canberra Multicultural Festival,” L-FRESH the Lion said.

“It’s been a long time since I last performed there, and coming back to share this moment with the community means a lot. I can’t wait to put on a special show for everyone.”

Beyond the headline acts, the festival’s program spans music, dance, comedy, workshops and family activities.

Among the highlights is Fields of Belonging: Celebrating Multiculturalism in Sports, a panel discussion exploring how sport brings communities

together, featuring players from the Raiders, the Brumbies and Cricket Australia.

Music lovers can also look forward to performances by Queen of Hearts, a show-stopping all-female mariachi band known for its contemporary take on traditional Mexican music, and the MusicACT Takeover, which showcases local artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds blending tradition with modern sounds.

Families and children will be well catered for, with a dedicated range of interactive experiences.

Patch Theatre’s Glow and Tell will offer a light-filled performance for children aged 4–8, exploring themes of family and culture through storytelling and glowing UV visuals. Kids aged 4–12 can also join the Rice and Peas Jamaican Dancehall Party, led by Culture Queenz, while the CMAG Family Sanctuary at the Canberra Museum and Gallery will provide a calmer space with crafts, puppetry, face-painting and more.

Food remains a major drawcard of the festival, with cooking demonstrations from home cooks and some of Canberra’s most respected chefs, alongside hundreds of multicultural food stalls.

It may not be for everyone, but in a relatively quiet time of the year in our city, it’s great to have an event that creates some noise and drums up business for locals.

Royal Canberra Show (20-22 February) There’s a bit of something for everyone at the Show, with rides, games, animals, entertainment, show bags, food and drinks and plenty more! A great one for families or anyone looking to have some fun with friends.

I’ve always loved the feeling of a fresh start, a new calendar, clean pages, that hopeful sense that anything is possible.

But if I’m honest, there have been years I’ve looked at my resolutions by February and felt a mix of guilt, fatigue,

and that creeping dread about going back to work. Sound familiar?

After the slower pace of holidays, the idea of returning to early alarms, full inboxes, and endless to-do lists can feel overwhelming. You’re not alone if you’re finding it hard to switch gears.

What is ‘oatzempic’?

Does it actually work for weight loss?

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok or Instagram lately, you may have seen people blending oats with water or juice and calling it “oatzempic.”

The name is a nod to Ozempic, a prescription medication used primarily for type 2 diabetes that also suppresses appetite. Videos of the oatzempic drink usually promise easy weight loss, effortless fullness and a “natural alternative” to medication.

But is oatzempic supported by science? The short answer is no.

Let’s unpack why.

What exactly is oatzempic?

There is no standard recipe for oatzempic, but most videos show people blending one to two tablespoons of rolled oats with a glass of water. Others add lemon or lime juice, cinnamon or soak the oats first.

The suggested benefit is that drinking the mixture will create a sense of fullness and reduce appetite.

Some TikTok videos recommend to have oatzempic instead of breakfast. Others say to drink it as a mid-afternoon snack to prevent overeating later in the day.

What happens when you eat oatzempic?

Many users on social media report feeling fuller after drinking oatzempic which is not surprising.

Oats are rich in beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre that forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water. This slows down digestion which helps you to feel full.

There is good evidence that diets rich in viscous soluble fibre (like that from oats) modestly improve appetite control, reduce post-meal blood glucose (blood sugar) spikes and help regulate cholesterol.

Oats aren’t the only source of viscous soluble fibre though. Foods such as apples, citrus fruits, flaxseeds, barley, psyllium husk and legumes (beans, lentils) also provide soluble fibres that form gels in the gut and have similar effects of making us feel full, as well as improving overall health.

So, the claim that oats can help people feel full is well-founded. But feeling full is not the same as achieving meaningful or sustainable weight loss.

Long-term weight management requires balanced nutrition and physical activity – rather than relying solely on feeling full.

Has oatzempic been tested for weight loss?

No. There are no scientific studies that look at the “oatzempic drink” for weight loss, appetite control

or other health outcomes. There is no official recipe, no recommended amount, and no longterm research.

What we do know is that oats and other highfibre foods (for example, brown rice, nuts and seeds, berries, broccoli and Brussel sprouts) have been studied for decades. Research shows they can help you feel a little fuller, improve your blood glucose control and support heart health.

But, these benefits occur when oats are part of a healthy, balanced diet, not when consumed as a standalone “magic drink”.

Could oatzempic still be helpful for some people?

Yes. A drink that helps you feel fuller could slow down eating and better support portion control.

For those who often skip breakfast or grab food on the run, an oats-based drink may be a more nutritious option than not eating at all. But these benefits come from fibre and hydration.

You’d get a greater nutritional benefit by making a simple smoothie with oats, a banana or berries, a spoonful of nut or seed butter and a splash of milk or yoghurt. This combination adds protein, potassium, healthy fats and a range of vitamins and minerals, offering a more balanced and nourishing option for your health.

Are there any risks?

For most people, drinking oatzempic in small amounts is safe. But there are some important considerations: • It’s not a complete meal. Oatzempic is low in protein, healthy fats and several essential micronutrients. If it regularly replaces meals, it could lead to nutrient gaps or even under-eating.

• Sudden fibre increases can cause discomfort. For those not used to high-fibre diets, a rapid increase can trigger bloating or gastrointestinal symptoms – especially if fluid intake is inadequate.

What actually works for sustainable weight management?

Research supports a combination of strategies for long-term, sustainable weight management: Cooking healthy meals at home that focus on adequate protein, healthy fats, unprocessed carbohydrates and fibre; reducing intake of added sugar and processed foods and drinks; drinking enough water; consistent physical activity; and good sleep and stress management.

Weaker housing market tipped for early 2026

by LLOYD JONES, AAP The housing market is tipped to start weaker in 2026 with confidence dented by fears the Reserve Bank’s next move will be a rate hike, a leading property data provider says.

Cotality’s national Home Value Index recorded the smallest gain in five months, with values rising 0.7 per cent in December.

Sydney and Melbourne were the biggest drag on the growth outcome, with values sliding -0.1 per cent, while Canberra had the smallest increase at 0.2 per cent.

That marked the first month-on-month decline since January 2025.

Every other capital and rest-of-state region recorded a rise in values through December, although most saw some momentum leave the market.

Tim Lawless, Cotality’s research director, said the

softening hinted at a weaker start to 2026.

But an ongoing undersupply of housing would be enough to keep upward pressure on prices, he said.

The slowdown in the growth rate, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, was a clear sign of “a pretty substantial dent in confidence on the back of high inflation and this really hawkish stance from the RBA”, he said.

But increasing building costs and a tight labour market for construction trades would continue to keep housing supply far below what the country requires and therefore drive house prices up.

“In 2026 I think we will be encountering the same sort of barriers to getting more stock into the marketplace,” Mr Lawless said.

“A ‘higher for longer’ setting on interest rates, alongside a resurgence in cost-of-living pressures and worsening affordability pressures, looks to have taken some heat out of the market.”

Despite the softer December outcome, the

Home Value Index surged 8.6 per cent higher in 2025, adding about $71,400 to the national median dwelling value.

It was the strongest calendar year gain in home values since 2021, when the market rose 24.5 per cent amid emergency low interest rates and recordhigh purchasing activity.

Every capital city and rest-of-state region recorded an increase in dwelling values over the year, bookended by Darwin, up 18.9 per cent and Melbourne with a milder 4.8 per cent gain.

Regional markets were more resilient to a slowdown, but not immune.

The monthly pace of growth across the combined regional markets of Australia slowed from 1.2 per cent in November to 1.0 per cent in December.

Despite the easing the monthly pace of gains was double the combined capital city growth trend, where values rose by 0.5 per cent in December.
