ad’s are getting a space of their own at South.Point this Father’s Day, with food, tastings and a little well-earned time out on the menu at Dad’s Den. Taking over Centre Court from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, Dad’s Den is part of South.Point’s Father’s Day celebrations, giving families another way to spend the weekend together while offering Dad a few treats of his own. South.Point Marketing Manager Carole Arulantu said the idea follows a similar activation held for Mother’s Day and was designed to give

dads their own version of a little pampering. “We are doing a similar thing to what we did for Mother’s Day, which is just giving dads a little bit of a timeout, a little bit of, in their way, a pamper package as well,” she said. Shoppers who spend $50 at participating South.Point retailers can receive a ticket to enter the 18+ Dad’s Den, where complimentary whiskey and rum tastings from Canberra Distillery will be joined by chicken sliders, mini beef pies and sausage rolls from The Coffee Club. “Of course, it’s never complete without a good sausage roll,” Carole said.

Eligible shoppers will also have the chance to enter a competition to win a Cheetah Walk experience at the National Zoo and Aquarium. While Dad enjoys some downtime, the kids can get creative nearby, with a separate area in Centre Court offering craft activities where they can make something special to give him for Father’s Day. Carole described Dad’s Den as a “short, sharp and sweet” experience that gives dads a chance to enjoy some time to themselves while still being part of a family day out. The celebrations don’t have to end when Dad leaves the den, with Carole encouraging families to make a day of their visit to South.Point. Families can start with breakfast, take the kids for a train or car ride and let them burn off some energy at one of the centre’s three playgrounds. There’s also the option to stop for coffee and cake, catch a movie or grab dinner to take home at the end of the day. “There’s heaps of quality time that you can spend with a family at South.Point,” Carole said. That focus on spending time together is particularly important for the shopping centre as households continue to navigate cost-of-living pressures. Carole said occasions such as Father’s Day have traditionally been associated with buying Dad a big present or splashing out, but that isn’t canberradaily.com.au

always possible for families. “It’s the cost of living that’s stopping a lot of families from actually going out there and spending money.” Dad’s Den is intended to offer something extra for families who are already spending time together, whether they are heading out for breakfast, meeting for lunch or simply enjoying a day at the centre. “So this is a little experience for Dad,” Carole said. “They get that special something which otherwise they may not even think about.” But Carole said celebrating Father’s Day doesn’t have to be about how much a family spends. For her, the most important part is making time for the people closest to you. “Just because the cost of living is so high, let’s not forget what the most important thing is for us at South.Point, which is family,” she said. That time together can be as simple as going for a walk, sharing a meal or finding something the whole family can enjoy. “We can walk to a destination, walk around the lake, walk around South.Point.” Whether Father’s Day means treating Dad at Dad’s Den, sharing breakfast or lunch, catching a movie or simply spending some uninterrupted time together, South.Point hopes families use canberradaily.com.au
the occasion to celebrate the dads and father figures in their lives. Dad’s Den will run at South.Point Tuggeranong from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September. Dad’s Den is strictly 18+. Terms and conditions apply to entry and the Cheetah Walk competition. Special thanks to our partners:

Leanne vs Goliath: Every Underdog Has Their Day
with NICOLE LAWDER
FORMER ACT MLA AND DEPUTY OPPOSITION LEADER
Smith & Kell’s “Goliath” is, at its heart, a song about the little battler squaring up to something much bigger than themselves and refusing to blink. It’s been on high rotation in my head this week, because it’s exactly the energy I got sitting down with Leanne Foresti, who ran as an independent for Ginninderra in the 2024 ACT election. Leanne isn’t your typical candidate. She and her husband run a concrete remediation business, and it was watching the skills and labour crisis
chew through small operators like hers that got her writing letters to federal and local ministers in the first place. A meeting with Andrew Leigh, a conversation with the Master Builders Association and later she found herself talking to Thomas Emerson, who was then working for Senator David Pocock. “It was the first time I ever really felt that I had been heard,” she told me. That feeling was enough to tip her from letter-writer to volunteer, and then, at Emerson’s suggestion, into the race itself as a lead candidate with Independents for Canberra. Ginninderra in 2024 was no soft landing. Sitting government ministers, sitting members, and around 32 other hopefuls on the ballot. Leanne jokes about coming out the other side with a bit of PTSD, and about the particular indignity of your own face staring
back at you from a corflute on every second corner. But she’s also cleareyed about what the experience gave her: resilience, and confirmation she was chasing the right issues. Those issues keep coming back to training. Leanne pointed out that not one of CIT’s top six fee-free enrolments is construction-related, in the middle of a housing and infrastructure crisis where the ACT is already competing with New South Wales and Victoria for tradies. CIT’s completion rate sits around 50 per cent, against roughly 80 per cent for carpentry apprentices through RTOs like MBA ACT. Add in the highest workers’ compensation rates and payroll tax in the country, and it’s little wonder so many subbies have quietly relocated across the border taking their revenue with them. So will she run again in 2028?
Leanne’s answer was a careful yes-but. She’d like to put her hand up under the banner of Voices of Belconnen and Gungahlin, part of that “voices of” communityindependent tradition we’ve already seen with Voices of Bean and Voices of Canberra – groups that select and endorse their own candidates through an open, transparent community process, rather than running as a party. Which brings me back to Goliath. Politics loves to frame these contests as David versus a giant, but talking to Leanne, it felt less like she was trying to slay anything, and more like she just wants a seat at the table where the decisions about small business, training and construction actually get made. Sometimes the underdog doesn’t need to win the whole fight – just get heard.

Appalling treatment of veterans by Albanese government with C

BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD CO
NTRIB
O UT
FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
One of the most satisfying and decent things I was able to do as an ACT Housing Minister was in 1996. My two wonderful senior housing bureaucrats, Commissioner Sue Birtles and General Manager Peter Guild, at one of our regular Monday catch-ups made me aware of a problem. A Current Affair were filming a story at 1pm that day at our flats opposite the Russian embassy in Kingston, where an exWorld War One digger, aged 96, had just been told his pension payment towards his rent was going up from $46 pw to $92 because some idiot had ruled that his TPI pension should be treated as income. I was ropeable, and once Sue, Peter and I
80
realised it was within my power as minister to cancel that ruling, I duly did so. Between 9:30am and 1pm, we ascertained that we had four old WWI diggers on TPI pensions as tenants, so I immediately rescinded their payments from their TPI pensions and directed Housing to find out ASAP how many ex-diggers (WWI to Vietnam) we had on TPI pensions in ACT Housing so I could rescind their payments as well. At 1pm, Sue, Peter and I duly turned up at the flats, and I told the old digger the good news. The A Current Affair journo seemed very upset I spoiled her story, but I assured her, as Minister, the buck stopped with me and that I found it appalling anyone could think of penalising an old digger by having his TPI pension classed as income. I told the reporter that there was nothing finer than putting your body on the line for your country and wearing the uniform of the RAN, Australian Army or RAAF, and we as a country must look after our military veterans. Several weeks later, upon finding out we had 273
ex-diggers affected, I exempted them too during a media announcement on 24 April 1996 outside the War Memorial. I recall becoming quite emotional when making the announcement, as I felt I really was doing a good and honourable thing. Accordingly, I was sickened to see the current federal government restrict benefits granted to our wounded veterans to $5,000 of treatment. The minister, Matt Keogh’s behaviour was disgraceful, and he should be sacked. What has he ever done to benefit Australia, as opposed to these wounded heroes whose sacrifices have ensured we remain a free people? It is disgusting to compare, as the veterans’ representatives have, the money wasted on bringing back ISIS brides, who left this country to help their evil husbands slaughter and mutilate helpless Yazidis and other groups in the Middle East, and keep slaves themselves. A country and government are truly losing their way when they treat their decent, law-abiding military veterans like dirt and treat brutal, barbaric murderers and their accomplices as treasured citizens. Keeping this minister really sullies your government, Albo. Do the honourable thing or, better still, Minister, have the decency to resign yourself.

‘Did I stuff up?’ Ryan’s unlikely laundromat gamble
Photo Wilson Au Yeung
by BERNIE RYAN
Belconnen Laundromat owner Ryan Nguyen hopes to turn the humble laundromat into a place for community and connection.
“Did I stuff up buying a lowest-rated laundromat?” This is a comment on the Belconnen Laundromat’s new Instagram page by its 27-year-old new owner and Belconnen resident Ryan Nguyen. It would seem a reasonable question from this first-time business owner, who left his home and family in Hanoi, Vietnam at the age of 14 to move to Australia and live with his Aunt Lisa and her family. Ryan is the eldest of two boys and says that his mum Mai Phan, a physics teacher, and dad Son Nguyen, a banker, wanted more opportunities for him. “My family wanted me to come
here at such a young age to have a better education and a new place to experience life and grow,” he says. Is owning a laundromat what they expected? Ryan laughs and says, “At first, Mum was like, ‘What on earth are you going to do? Why open up a business?’” “But she knows that I always want to do something, and she always supports me.” Ryan’s mum, who is currently visiting for three months, also knows that owning a business will neither be his first challenge nor likely his first achievement. After high school in Liverpool, this determined yet humble young man completed a degree in civil engineering at the University of

Technology Sydney, during which he lived with friends in a share house. Connection and community are obviously important to Ryan. “In Vietnam, we lived in a very traditional household with three generations,” he says. “My grandparents, mum, dad, myself and my younger brother Quang Anh.” Ryan moved to Canberra in 2020 and his brother now also lives in Canberra, and of course, like his visiting Mum, “helps in the laundromat”. Ryan reflects on growing up in Hanoi, where society is inherently community-based. Neighbourhoods had shared spaces like playgrounds where children played together and parents gathered to chat. “We always had a little playground in our neighbourhood, and all the kids would come with chalks, and the mums and the dads would be in
another corner ... we would just be playing around in the playground,” he said. So, to Ryan’s mum’s question for her high-achieving son, “What on earth?” And why a laundromat? Ryan’s drivers extend far beyond taking dirty clothes and making them clean. Ryan laments the human cost of much of our societal evolution, which is one of the things that inspired him to become a civil engineer. Civil engineers design physical structures that connect people, like bridges and roads. Ryan’s hope is that by breathing life into an underperforming, low-rated, humble laundromat, he might also rebuild community and social connection in Belconnen and beyond. “It is my passion as a civil engineer to create public places for people to do that, so I think a laundromat … it’s similar to my day
job; a place for people to meet up or a meeting space,” he says. “People go online nowadays but online is not really great for having that fundamental need of communication. “People really yearn to have like a meeting space, a community.” Additionally, though, there is no pressure in a laundromat to interact, says Ryan. He adds that waiting for one’s washing to finish provides people with a place to decompress, read or just be still against the therapeutic hum of a washer and dryer. “People don’t come here to use their phones and scroll on social media, he says. “They also just slow down.” Spend only a few minutes on the Belconnen Laundromat’s Instagram page and Ryan’s entrepreneurship, genuine warmth and infectious personality are evident in his increasingly viral posts.
It’s no wonder they are gaining the traction that they are. It is refreshing. His heartfelt nod to his home, Vietnam, where he first experienced community, family and connection, is also palpable. But above all, Ryan’s passion for helping us all rediscover the joy of human interaction, stillness and being present in a world where sadly little of this comes naturally anymore, is clearly his north star. “It feels good in my heart, and I can do it for free,” he says. Everyone from Ryan’s mum to his newest customer would have to agree. No, Ryan, you are definitely not ‘stuffing up’. You can find the Belconnen Laundromat at 3/68 Josephson Street, Belconnen or check out @ belcolaundromat on Instagram to follow Ryan’s journey.

Ernest Gimson’s lost vision for a Canberra of domes and piazzas by NICHOLAS FULLER
Parliament House overlooking the water. Image: The Curious Compendium of Architectural What-Ifs.
Canberra might have resembled an Italian city: Parliament, like a Venetian palazzo, rising on Kurrajong Hill, its golden domes reflected in the waters of a lake. A cathedral grandissimone dominating the town. Pale stone and Tuscan terracotta roofs as red as Siena.
Romanesque arches. Campaniles and colonnades. Bustling piazzas with fountains and cafés. A university like Bologna’s antipodean cousin. This was British architect Ernest Gimson’s unrealised plan for Canberra. “A city brimming with Mediterranean warmth, Arts and Crafts charm and Neo-Byzantine grandeur, yet with a distinctly Australian character,” says Daniel Coughlin, who has created what may be the first historically informed, photorealistic reconstruction of Gimson’s lost vision for the Australian capital, and published it on his Curious Compendium of Architectural What-Ifs – a speculative architecture and urban history YouTube channel, featured by Newsweek. “What immediately fascinated me was the jawdropping contrast between Gimson’s proposal and the Canberra that exists today,” Coughlin said. “More than anything, I was struck by the beauty of his vision, as well as how humane and sustainable it would be.” In 1911, a decade after federation, the
Commonwealth government invited designers and architects from around the world to submit their proposals for the national capital. Gimson’s was one of the 46 shortlisted designs – but did not reach the final round of three. Today, we live in Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin’s city. A British architect and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, Gimson was championed by William Morris, while architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described him as “the greatest of the English artist-craftsmen”. Coughlin based his recreation of Gimson’s Canberra on the architectural plan, architect Alfred Hoare Powell’s watercolours, and a written description in the Australian archives, and used AI and editing tools to turn the surviving material into images and a video. Coughlin suggests that cost may have counted against Gimson’s proposal: building an entire capital through traditional craft techniques, finely detailed masonry, and bespoke joinery would have been expensive and slow. But on balance, Coughlin thinks Gimson’s Canberra could have been better to live in. Read the full article on canberradaily.com.au or scan the QR code.

Fifth-generation Binalong dad wins national ‘Sports Dad’ award by BERNIE RYAN Just in time for Father’s Day, Ben Spencer, a 37-yearold full-time Transgrid employee, local business owner, fifth-generation Binalong NSW community member, and dad, has been announced the winner of the Community Sports Dad of the Year. Mr Spencer was chosen from a field of hundreds for his extensive and ongoing commitment to Binalong, a small NSW town of 550 people one hour north-west of Canberra. Mr Spencer’s decades-long and ongoing multiple contributions are too extensive to list in full. Notably, however, he is president of the Binalong Swimming Club and coaches local children three afternoons a week during swimming season and attends competitions on weekends. He is president of the Binalong Brahmans Football Club where he does everything from mowing fields to general club jobs. Mr Spencer also founded Spencer Swim Safe, a not-for-profit organisation created to provide essential
learn-to-swim & life-saving skills in remote Australian and international communities. Mr Spencer is a proud Dad to Ian, 9, and Harry, 7, who attend Binalong Public School, which has just 38 students from kindergarten to Year 6. Renee Arabin, the Principal at Binalong Public School, nominated Mr Spencer, whom she has known for over 20 years. “Ben shows our kids and the wider community what it means to give service to others. He cares and invests in our kids and our community, now and in the future,” she says. Mr Spencer will receive a Philips Water Station valued at $1,299 and can choose a sporting organisation to receive a $5,000 Rebel Sport voucher to use on new equipment or uniforms. “It is a huge privilege to accept this award,” he says. “I am hoping to divide the $5,000 between the Swimming Club in Binalong, the Yass Magpie Junior Rugby League and the football team at Binalong

Public School.” In winning this award, Mr Spencer is delighted that it will shine more well-deserved light on the community of Binalong who have, “…always punched above their weight” when it comes to helping their community or others. On the extraordinary efforts that led to winning this award, Mr Spencer said that he does it, “…just because someone needs to, I guess, and to keep the community spirit going.” Mr Spencer says that he is also accepting the award on behalf of numerous other dads in his community, who he believes deserve this award just as much. “Happy Father’s Day to all of you, you who do so much in the sporting world as well,” he says.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
This week brings tests of love and friendship. The ‘test’ could be a text, an invitation, a crisis, a vulnerable confession or even a subtle bid for attention. As with any test, timing matters. It’s not only about giving the right answer but about giving it before the other person has to wonder if you care.

A situation you deal with every day is starting to feel even more humbling. And though this is not how things will be, instead of waiting for the change, assume that there is a serious upside to this exact configuration – something you can leverage to a greater advantage. Forces like weather and gravity apply not only to the physical world but also to emotional realms. That’s why your talent for lifting people’s spirits is invaluable. You make people laugh when they need it most. You rescue awkward moments. You put problems into perspective.
It is normal for humans to protect their own egos, as it would be hard to function without one. It is not advantageous to protect the ego at all costs, though there are those who seem intent on it. If you can avoid them, you’ll also be avoiding the inevitable chaos that surrounds such an agenda. This week, your mystery is working for you; the best part is that you don’t even feel the need to share any more than ‘just enough’. Once you see how well it works, you may never go back to explanations. Let them leave room for imagination to fill in with what they want to be there. The difference between getting what you want by next week and getting it next year (or never) can be summed up in one word: awareness. Your powers of observation provide a distinct advantage, especially when you’re noticing other people’s problems and needs. The more successful you become, the more options you have. Ironically, the happiest people often feel the least urgency to chase them all. They know their greatest sense of belonging comes from within. Deep contentment that comes with trusting your own company. It’s the ideal time for getting the word out about what you do. People need it, but they won’t know this until they hear about you. Talk, advertise, ask for testimonials and referrals. By drumming up some business, you stand to improve many lives, including your own. The best relationships don’t have you asking, ‘Do you love me?’ – because the answer keeps appearing in a hundred different forms. Someone is making plans with you already included. It’s a simple gesture with a potent message. You live in the world and also in someone’s heart.

HX Expeditions: A base camp for adventure HX has been expedition cruising since 1896 and today leads more polar expeditions than anyone else*. Over 130 years, we’ve refined the best way to explore. Our hybrid-powered ships, MS Fridtjof Nansen and MS Roald Amundsen, were purpose-built for all-inclusive discovery, designed to immerse you in Antarctica from every angle and make the most of every moment. ON THE WATER: Up close to the action The core of our expedition experience lies in the fleet of equipment we carry on board. On any given morning, you might hop into a Zodiac boat that launches from the ship to find a pod of humpback whales surfacing just metres away, while another group heads out by kayak to paddle through a corridor of sculpted icebergs. The groups swap, so everyone gets to do everything. You’ll also explore alongside scientists, taking part in real research such as collecting whale biopsies that help track population health, or photographing tail flukes for Happywhale, a global, citizen science identification database that tracks individual whales across the ocean and sends you an update if yours is spotted again. 28

ON LAND: Boots on the ice Stepping onto the Antarctic continent is something most people only dream of. Zodiacs land you ashore, where you might don snowshoes and hike to a historic research base, or visit a colony of gentoo penguins, known for collecting – and stealing – pebbles to build their nests. Wherever you go, you’ll be accompanied by a team of experts who know the continent better than anyone: historians, ornithologists, geologists, and marine biologists who bring what you’re seeing to life as you see it. With HX, you also have a greater chance of camping overnight on Antarctic ice, thanks to the volume of equipment we carry. You can sleep in a tent or a bivvy bag, the latter meaning there’s nothing between you and the elements, just the sound of cracking ice and wildlife calls lulling you to sleep. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you’re home. ON BOARD: Comfort meets discovery Adventure is best when you have the space to take it all in. On board, there are plenty of places to relax between excursions: a choice of three restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining, an infinity pool, sauna, indoor and outdoor gyms, and a bar where you can swap stories over
HX Expeditions takes travellers closer to the wonders of Antarctica.
cocktails as icebergs drift past the window. The heart of the ship is the state-of-the-art Science Centre, where what you see in the field comes into focus through lectures and handson sessions. You might examine phytoplankton from water samples collected out in a Zodiac, watching them glow under a microscope, or hear a penguinologist explain how species adapt their breeding cycles to shifting ice conditions, and what that tells us about our changing climate. Sailing on hybrid-powered ships means quieter, more sustainable voyages, and a better chance of witnessing wildlife undisturbed, whether that’s spotting whales from the deck or hearing a wall of ice crack away from a glacier before you even see it. Stabilised hull technology provides smoother crossings through the Drake Passage, the (in)famous open ocean between South America and Antarctica, so you arrive rested and ready to explore. For over a century, HX has been taking curious travellers to the places most people only read about. Antarctica is the pinnacle of that legacy, and there’s never been a better time to see it for yourself. Quark Expeditions: Explore More Forget ordinary sightseeing. Touch down by helicopter on the vast Greenland Ice Sheet. Paddle a kayak through Antarctica’s icy bays. Mountain bike the rugged terrain of South Greenland. Cruise by Zodiac alongside towering glaciers and vast penguin colonies in South Georgia. Heli-trek across the snowfields of the Antarctic Peninsula. These are the kinds of experiences Quark Expeditions has been pioneering since 1991, when it became the first company to bring travellers to the North Pole. Thirty-five years later, the award-winning polar operator continues to expand how travellers experience the Arctic and Antarctica. “What makes the polar regions so powerful is that no two experiences are ever the same,” said Sam Seward, President of Quark Expeditions. “We give travellers even more opportunities to engage with these destinations through exploration, learning, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences, while staying true to the spirit of adventure that has defined Quark
Expeditions for more than 35 years.” More ways to explore Quark Expeditions’ new Guided Photography Program has been designed to help guests capture stronger images in one of the world’s most challenging photographic environments. Available on select departures, the small-group experience combines expert coaching, premium Zodiac access, extended shooting time and daily image reviews. The best of both poles The Antarctic features five remarkable regions: the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Patagonia and the rarely visited Emperor Penguin colony at Snow Hill Island. Beyond the reach of traditional expedition ships, Snow Hill Island is accessible only by helicopter from Ultramarine, revealing one of Antarctica’s most exclusive wildlife experiences. The Arctic spans five regions – Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, the Canadian Arctic and Atlantic Canada – where dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife and diverse cultures shape
every journey. New for 2028 is the 20-day Canadian Arctic: Wildlife, Helicopters, and the Northwest Passage itinerary, Quark’s most immersive Northwest Passage voyage yet. With more than 70 departures across both polar regions, the journey is no longer just about where you go – it’s about how you experience it, what you learn, and how deeply you engage with the destination. Queanbeyan represents! by GEORGIA CURRY Monday night, 24 August, at Queanbeyan’s Tourist Hotel was rowdy, with 60 cheering “Quangers” – including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor – watching local singer Jerikye Williams audition on The Voice. It was a proud hometown watch party for the Queanbeyan High School graduate, who strutted his stuff on national TV singing ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Chuck Berry. His “blind audition” turned two chairs. Jerikye did Queanbeyan proud (2620!), wearing a custom-made multicoloured suit, slick ‘50s hairdo and grabbing the attention of celebrity judges Ronan Keating and Kate Miller-Heidke. canberradaily.com.au
The quietly spoken 24-year-old also wore a guitar strap decorated with Indigenous art to reflect his Wiradjuri heritage. You may have seen Jerikye around town because he sports a distinctive Elvis quiff hairdo, and DJs at Civic’s 88mph bar (plus the occasional Elvis tribute act). It’s safe to say that performing on national telly and doing an impromptu jam with megastar Richard Marx was a career highlight. “I grew up with all the ‘80s stuff and ‘90s and as a DJ I played [Richard Marx’s] music all the time,” Jerikye said. “Ronan Keating was on stage too, but he didn’t know the words but that was okay.” In the wings stood his proud mum and uncle, who Jerikkye said
“were more excited than I was at the end of it”. There were no nerves on the night, despite the live 400-strong studio audience and a national TV audience of 1.65 million. “All I know is that I didn’t have any nerves on stage, but I had a lot of nerves waiting to go on stage,” he said. “What was making me more nervous was just the waiting and the anticipation to get on stage and rock out. Once I did get on stage, I was totally fine. “ Filming of The Voice has already wrapped and the next round is the knockouts – but Jerikye is sworn to secrecy. “AII I can honestly say it’s probably one of the best things I’ve done and I’ve made a lot of good friends out of it,” he said. “The people that have been on the show were just awesome to be around. Producers were awesome.
Queanbeyan musician Jerikye Williams successfully auditions on Channel 7’s The Voice.
Coaches were awesome. It was just one of the most welcoming, grooviest, coolest experiences.” The Voice Australia airs on Channel 7 at 7:30pm on Monday and Tuesday nights. 3 September 2026

Keating’s brutal theatrics by GEORGIA CURRY Former PM Paul Keating once described Malcolm Fraser as “an Easter Island statue with an arse full of razor blades”, which is why hit comedy “The Gospel According to Paul” has racked up 200 shows. There’s no shortage of fodder from Keating’s razor-sharp wit in the ‘90s, when he used personal insults and “colourful” metaphors as devastating political weapons. It’s been 30 years since Keating was PM but judging by the long-running (six years) Gospel According to Paul, we can’t get enough. In fact, Australia’s 24th Prime Minister has spawned Keating! The Musical (still showing at Melbourne Comedy Festival), a 94-page book of political barbs: Paul Keating’s Book of Insults, and a YouTube channel dedicated to his sharptongued put-downs. Keating may be 82 but his scathing, disembowelling insults never get old. Writer and star of The Gospel According
to Paul, Jonathan Biggins, has received many glowing reviews but the best one was from Keating himself, who’s seen the show three times. “When he first saw the show, his first comment was ‘thank you for being so generous’,” Jonathan said. “I think he thought it might have been a hatchet job but it’s not,” When Jonathan thought it was his final season, he was summonsed to Keating’s office. “It was just before what we thought was the last season of the Opera House – I mean, this thing, you can’t kill it, it just keeps coming back,” he said. “I was summoned to Mr Keating’s office and I said, ‘Can I bring my producer along?’ And he said ‘No, just you’ and I was there for two hours. I think he just wanted to re-insure the legacy, I don’t think he had an objective. “He talked me through his legacy and what he did in government and then we spent a lot of time looking at some of his collection of French decorative arts, which is quite extraordinary.”
Comedian Jonathan Biggins stars in the one-man hit satire, The Gospel According to Paul, at The Playhouse 15-20 September.
Keating had no editorial control over the play and Jonathan admits “It was unauthorised in that regard”. “He sort of gave it the tick of approval and then he brought his family along, Annita came along one night with their daughter so yes, it’s been given the seal of approval by the Keating family.” The Gospel According to Paul is on at The Playhouse 15-20 September. This week, Michael Popple reviews distinctive crime fiction reads from three impressive Australian authors. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com
The Wreck by Riley James Allen & Unwin, $34.99
In September 1977, a plane vanishes over the Bass Strait after sending a chilling final radio transmission. Twenty years later, an expedition journeys to a remote Tasmanian island, hoping to find the missing plane. However, after a storm leaves them stranded, the researchers must contend with a sinister presence lurking in the shadows. The Wreck is a haunting novel that cleverly dives into the mysteries of the ‘Bass Strait Triangle’. Featuring a compelling story loaded with secrets, twists and a desperate battle for survival, this is an amazing read that will make an excellent last-minute gift for Father’s Day.
The Doubles by Jacob K. Gallagher Hachette Australia, $34.99 In rural New South Wales, something dark is stirring as the Veil between the mortal realm and the Outside is wearing thin. After several children are killed, Envoy Kring of the Higher Powers is sent to investigate. Teaming up with local magical law enforcement officer Dries, Kring needs to find whatever is behind the deaths before even greater chaos is unleashed. Canberran author Jacob Gallagher has a fantastic debut with The Doubles. An outstanding Australian urban fantasy, The Doubles features an addictive mixture of unique fantasy fiction elements and a slick mystery that you won’t be able to stop reading.
The Reckoning by Vikki Petraitis Simon & Schuster Australia, $34.99 When two convicted rapists are released on appeal, they return to their hometown of Deception Bay to a hero’s welcome. However, their homecoming is short lived, when dozens of people at the celebratory lunch become violently ill. It falls to Detective Antigone Pollard, the women who arrested the men, to investigate. However, Antigone finds herself distracted by a dangerous situation that hits close to home. Vikkie Petraitis continues to expertly showcase the shocking issues affecting women in rural Victoria. The third book from Petraitis set in Deception Bay, The Reckoning is a particularly hard-hitting crime fiction read guaranteed to stick in the mind. 42

Why speech can become unclear, even when you can hear the sound “I can hear perfectly well – everyone just seems to mumble.”
by Michelle Richards, Director & Accredited Hearing Specialist — Michelle Richards Hearing, Dickson
It is one of the most common things I hear in the clinic. Perhaps you can hear that someone is speaking from the next room, but you cannot quite make out what they are saying. You hear your partner’s voice, but find yourself asking them to repeat. The television is certainly loud enough, yet dialogue seems increasingly unclear. Restaurants, family gatherings and group conversations have become particularly difficult. This can be confusing because it doesn’t necessarily feel like hearing loss. You can hear. The difficulty is understanding. And there is an important difference. Hearing sound is only the beginning Speech is an extraordinarily complex signal. Some speech sounds carry considerably more energy than others. Vowels tend to be stronger and easier to hear, while many of the softer consonants that give words their clarity – such as s, f, th, t and k – are higher
in frequency and can become more difficult to detect or distinguish when hearing changes. You may therefore hear the voice without receiving all of the information contained within it. This is why simply making something louder doesn’t always make it clearer. It can also explain a complaint I frequently hear: “If I turn the television up enough to understand the dialogue, everything else is too loud.” The volume isn’t necessarily the whole problem. Clarity is. Why is it so much worse in background noise? Background noise places much greater demands on our auditory system. The brain must separate the voice we want to hear from competing voices and sounds, then use the auditory information available to piece the message together. When some of those speech cues are no longer being heard clearly, that
task becomes considerably harder. You may notice yourself concentrating intensely, watching people’s faces, filling in missing words from context or simply smiling and nodding when you have lost track of the conversation. What can audiology testing reveal? A comprehensive hearing assessment should tell us much more than whether you can hear a series of beeps. Pure-tone audiometry is important because it helps us understand your hearing sensitivity across different frequencies. But that is only one part of understanding how somebody hears in everyday life. Depending on your individual needs, assessment may also include speech testing to examine how accurately you recognise words, testing at different presentation levels, assessment of middle-ear function, and other measures where clinically appropriate. Just as importantly, your hearing specialist should ask about your actual experience. An audiogram provides valuable clinical information. Your experience provides valuable information too. The two should be considered together. What should you ask your hearing specialist? You have every right to understand your own hearing. After an assessment, you should feel comfortable asking: What does my hearing test actually show? Does it explain the difficulties I am experiencing? How well am I recognising speech? Are some speech sounds likely to be harder for me than others? Why do I struggle more in background noise? Are both ears performing similarly? What are my options – including options other than hearing aids, if appropriate? If you are recommending hearing aids, why are you recommending this particular technology for me? A good hearing consultation should leave you better informed, not simply handed an audiogram or presented with a product. The relationship matters too
Hearing care is rarely a single appointment. If hearing devices become appropriate, successful outcomes depend on much more than choosing a hearing aid from a brochure. They can involve careful fitting, verification, fine-tuning, follow-up appointments, counselling, realistic expectations and adjustments as your needs change. That makes the relationship with your hearing specialist important. You should feel heard. You should be able to ask questions without feeling rushed. You should understand what has been found and why particular recommendations are being made. And your hearing specialist should understand something about you – your work, family, social life, priorities and the situations in which you most want to hear better. Because ultimately, we don’t treat an audiogram. We help a person communicate. “But my hearing isn’t that bad…” Perhaps not. And having your hearing assessed doesn’t mean you will automatically need hearing aids. Sometimes an assessment provides reassurance. Sometimes it identifies a hearing change worth monitoring. Sometimes it reveals why particular listening situations have become difficult. And sometimes it opens the door to solutions that can make communication considerably easier. The important thing is understanding what is happening. So, if you find yourself saying: “I can hear you – I just can’t understand you…” …it may be worth finding out why. Who checks in on Dad?
CO
NTRIBU
TO
with DR VIVIENNE LEWIS
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA
Father’s Day is usually a celebration of what dads do for everyone else. The family barbecue gets fired up, cards are exchanged, and the obligatory socks make another appearance. Children thank their fathers for years of lifts to sport, helping with homework, assembling bicycles, fixing things and dispensing advice that may or may not have been requested. But Father’s Day can also be a useful reminder to
ask a simple question: Who checks in on Dad? Many men carry an enormous amount of responsibility while talking very little about how they are coping. For generations, many boys grew up learning that being a good man meant being dependable, capable and strong. They learnt to solve problems, support their families and keep going, even when life was difficult. While these qualities can be admirable, they can also come at a cost. Many men become experts at looking like they are coping. They continue going to work, paying the bills, mowing the lawn and helping everyone else while quietly struggling with stress, anxiety, loneliness, grief or depression and often, the people around them have no idea. Research consistently shows that men are less likely than women to
seek professional help for mental health difficulties. They are also less likely to talk openly about emotional struggles with friends and family. Instead, distress may show up in different ways, such as irritability, anger, withdrawal, working longer hours, increased alcohol use, which can be signs that something deeper is going on. The challenge is that many men don’t necessarily recognise these signs in themselves. They may view stress, exhaustion or low mood as something they simply need to push through. Others worry that speaking up will burden their family or make them appear weak. One of the biggest myths about men’s mental health is that men don’t want support. Most do. They simply don’t always know how to ask for it. Many men also prefer side-by-side conversations rather than face-to-face emotional discussions. They might talk while driving, walking the dog,
watching sport or working on a project together. The conversation may not begin with feelings, but connection often grows through shared activity. This Father’s Day, alongside the gifts and celebrations, perhaps we can take a moment to genuinely check in with the fathers and father figures in our lives. Ask, “how are you going?” And then listen. Every dad deserves the opportunity to be seen as a person, not just as a provider or problem solver. Connection is one of the most powerful protective factors for mental wellbeing. A phone call, a conversation, a shared meal or simply spending time together can make a real difference. So this Father’s Day, by all means buy the socks, but perhaps the greatest gift you can give is your attention. Because sometimes the person who spends the most time looking after everyone else needs someone to ask how they’re doing.

Tucked away in a modern Belconnen suburb, lives a 94-year-old Japanese poet who incongruously writes ancient 1,300-year-old traditional Japanese poetry on her iPhone each day. Saeko Ogi has quietly lived in Canberra since 1972 writing countless verses of tanka poetry - a traditionally form of short Japanese poetry. Ironically, she never intended to settle here, nor did she intend to write poetry. After a private school invited her to teach Japanese here in 1972, she crossed the ocean – a widow with her 14-year-old daughter – to
start a new life. “It was a progressive school with lots of new ideas,” Saeko said. “At that time, Japanese was not taught at any schools in Canberra as yet, they were very keen to have a teacher from Japan. “I stayed mainly because of my daughter, she seemed to fit in at an Australian school better, she was given more freedom, more selfdecision than in Japan.” Her poetry flowed as soon as she arrived, even though she’d never written tanka while growing up in Japan. “I started writing tanka after arriving here in 1972, perhaps all the different circumstances lured me to it, sensing different nature

and also the feeling of loneliness,” she said. “I lost my husband in 1971 and I faced my life at the big corner to turn ... I was going to accept any changes in order to start a new life.” By definition, tanka poetry focuses on personal emotions, love, gratitude, and deep human reflections. The shores of Lake Ginninderra are her daily inspiration. “I often find my ideas coming up in mind when I go out for walk,” she said. “Being in a natural setting makes your mind freer and relaxed. Perhaps [I write] one tanka a day on average. I jot it down in my iPhone and copy it in my tanka note on my PC.” Saeko is a prolific writer and widely published, but here’s a small sample of her work: the winter solstice sun is hesitant to appear
in the dimness echoes the first ringing of my iPhone “rooster” Saeko taught Japanese at local schools (and also Australian adults through the Australia Japan Society) until 1996. “Then I had decided to stay on and here I am, I find myself still here,” she said. “Canberra was a capital of Australia, Tokyo was a capital as well. However, Canberra was much more spacious with such a small population. It was a peaceful and quiet place.” In a fitting tribute to our resident Japanese poet, Belconnen Arts Centre has just launched an exhibition, Rock at the Roadside (named after one of her many published anthologies). Thirteen artists have come together to celebrate her poems – including the former wife of PM Paul Keating, Annita Keating

I am working on a tanka anthology called Ties in Tanka so I appreciate that Tanka’s power of connecting people.” When not writing poetry,
Saeko loves watercolour painting, knitting, playing piano, Sudoku, and mahjong (both Australian and Japanese rules). Canberra’s sister city Nara may be a world away in Japan but our sister poet is right here in Belco. The exhibition, Rock at the Roadside, is on at Belconnen Arts Centre until 11 October.

Reliable Residential and Commercial Roofing Solutions in Canberra
Hudson Young has admitted he is attracted to the prospect of joining PNG’s list of star-studded recruits, labelling a move to the Chiefs as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”. Speaking before being awarded the True Blue Medal at NSW’s State of Origin dinner, Young confirmed on Monday night it was a contest between two for his signature. The 28-year-old has received a three-year offer from Canberra worth $1.1 million a season and remains open to the prospect of taking it up for 2028 and beyond. But he will first tour PNG once off the crutches later this month following his Achilles rupture, making clear he would only leave the Raiders to join the NRL’s 19th franchise. “I have no interest in playing for another NRL club,” Young said. “Sticky (coach Ricky Stuart) and I have spoken about that. It’s more the opportunity of the PNG thing. “He has been open, and I have been transparent with him on how I feel and what I want to do. Just sus it all out first and go from there. “My mindset is pretty open. It’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity. I just want to make sure I am comfortable with the decision I make.” Young has been granted permission by the Raiders to tour PNG and meet with the Chiefs before November 1, in a move that could also give the Raiders certainty in the market. To this point, no established NRL player has toured PNG and not taken up a deal, with Ivan Cleary suggesting last month it was impossible to compete if players were happy with the set up. 3 September 2026
