The Eastbourne: Where Canberra Living Together

comes

O

ne of Canberra’s greatest pleasures is that very little here feels far away. We have the restaurants, institutions and calendar of a capital city, yet the ease of somewhere much smaller. Like many of life’s great satisfactions, we can put this down to good planning and good people. At The Eastbourne on Commonwealth Park, both of those come generously into play. One of the most significant residential releases to date from leading Australian developer Amalgamated Property Group, The Eastbourne is the kind of address that ups your daily step count in the right way. With the city close, the lake even closer, and some of our best-loved green spaces almost at the front door, there’s little need to reach for the car keys. Newly established pedestrian and bike paths connect residents directly with Lake Burley Griffin, Commonwealth Park and Kings Park, making nature feel less like somewhere to visit and more like part of the daily routine. A morning walk can follow the water’s edge before work, while weekends can begin outside rather than with a drive somewhere. And when Floriade fills Commonwealth Park each spring, it’s close enough to wander over on foot. Good planning, as it turns out, makes for remarkably easy living.

Here at ANZAC Park East, within the Parliamentary Triangle, Canberra’s scale becomes a luxury in its own right. ANZAC Parade and the Australian War Memorial connect the precinct to some of the city’s most significant civic and cultural landmarks, while views towards Mount Ainslie, the Carillon, the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House add another layer to the sense of place. There is plenty within reach, without ever feeling hemmed in by it. Closer to home, that sense of connection does some of its best work at street level. By now, you’ve surely followed your stomach to East Traders Hall. Sitting at The Eastbourne’s doorstep, Canberra’s newest dining destination brings world-class food, coffee, brews and a little extra bustle to the precinct. Lager House by Capital Brewing Co., WORLD by Chairman Group, Lava Coffee and Sliceria provide plenty of reasons for residents to stay local, with more openings to come. The need to venture far diminishes even further inside The Eastbourne, where the amenity has been designed to make life at once simpler and more luxurious. An indoor heated pool and spa sit alongside separate cardio and weights gyms, while a steam room and sauna offer a quieter space to switch gears. A workout suddenly does not require another stop on the way home, or a monthly membership, and a swim does

Residents at The Eastbourne have access to a range of amenities designed for modern living.

not require much thought beyond heading downstairs. Splash, steam or stretch, all within the precinct. And when life calls for something more practical, The Eastbourne is designed to make that easier too. Concierge services, a dedicated business lounge, cold storage for grocery deliveries and a secure parcel room are all designed around modern life and its various demands. In an age when deliveries arrive at odd hours, travel is frequent and schedules change constantly, there are inbuilt answers ready to step in. Add the ability to work from the business lounge or make a quick commute into the city and efficiency starts to feel like an indulgence of its own. Inside each residence, the

same philosophy of considered living continues with every home delivering a higher-than-usual standard of inclusions. Generous proportions, expansive doubleglazed windows, externally ducted rangehoods and 2.7-metre ceilings in living areas create a greater sense of space, while engineered timber floors, natural granite and premium Miele appliances bring a polished finish. There’s room to entertain, settle in and hold onto the rituals that make home feel like home. For downsizers, that means less maintenance without sacrificing space. For young families, it means room to grow with Commonwealth Park effectively extending the backyard beyond the front door. canberradaily.com.au

The Eastbourne puts residents at the heart of one of Canberra’s most enviable locations.

Considering a move? The timing of a purchase couldn’t be better. From 1 July 2026, the ACT Government abolished stamp duty for eligible first home buyers and owner-occupiers buying a new unit titled home, which includes The Eastbourne’s turn-key units. For investors, it’s also worth noting that the Federal Government’s proposed negative gearing reforms, taking effect from 1 July 2027, will retain negative gearing benefits for newly built homes purchased from the developer. This means The Eastbourne is unaffected by these proposed changes.* For all the amenities, services and potential savings, some of The Eastbourne’s greatest assets are the things that could never be added to a floor plan. It’s the landscape beyond: a neighbourhood connected to both urban energy and nature’s ease. Mornings might begin by the lake and end downstairs over dinner at canberradaily.com.au

East Traders Hall. Work can stay close to home, while weekends can open out into parkland, exhibitions and Canberra’s major seasonal events. For a capital city, Canberra can be wonderfully easy to live in. At The Eastbourne, that ease comes particularly close to home. Bipartisan footy

The Noise will take on The Limestones in the Reclink Community Cup on Sunday 13 September at Boomanulla Oval, Narrabundah.

Bipartisan agreement in ACT politics is rare, but Liberal Leader Mark Parton and Labor Minister Chris Steel are both playing on the same team in the annual charity footy match, the Reclink Community Cup. Watching rival politicians play nice is enticing

enough but throw in local journalists and musicians (plus a healthy dose of pranks) and you’ve got yourself a match. This is no ordinary AFL game. It’s media (The Noise) versus musos (The Limestones) and all bets are off. In fact, what starts out as an AFL game often spills into a music festival. Team captain of The Limestones and musician, Heya Gosper, said it didn’t matter who wins, “footy and charity wins on the day”. “I’m the pranks coordinator so I’m mostly focused on pranks and shenanigans,” she said. “I playfully subvert expectations on and off the field, have a good time and support charity.” If you’re wondering why Liberal Leader Mark Parton is on the media team, he used to work in commercial radio. As for MLA Chris Steel, he’s the sports Minister so he must lead by example. To maintain a level playing field, Independent MLA Thomas Emmerson will play for The Limestones. As an unbiased journalist, I can unequivocally say that the media team is looking promising

this year. Team captain and WIN TV journalist, Maddi Green, said that after two months of training: “I’m hoping for the noise but am I cliché in saying that it doesn’t matter who wins?” “We lost last year so we’re hoping to bounce back,” Maddi said. “When you’re on that field it doesn’t matter what the score is because the game has pranks, it has surprises. It’s all about music and raising awareness for charity; that’s the biggest thing.” Reclink Australia will be the real winner on the day, with all proceeds going toward providing structured sport and recreation programs helping to improve life outcomes for those experiencing disadvantage. It’s a charity footy match that turns into a music festival (or vice versa). Game day is Sunday 13 September at Boomanulla Oval, Narrabundah. Live music and entertainment starts at 11am (family activities, kids’ zone, BBQ, coffee van, canteen, licensed bar). Tickets: tickets.oztix.com.au/outlet/ event/13dc298b-1173-49c1ae7e-e9cf4e34126f

Australia’s first neighbourhood café at an aged care opens in Page by NICHOLAS FULLER

Little Italy Village Café in Page is bringing aged care residents and the wider community together.

Until last week, the Belconnen suburb of Page had no café. One opened on Friday 21 August – in an aged-care home. Little Italy Village Café opened at Villaggio Sant’ Antonio in what the aged-care provider believes is an Australian first: a public café on the outside of an aged-

care home, designed to serve both residents and the neighbourhood. “We’re really working hard to make it a place where residents can get to know the local community and vice versa,” Villaggio Sant’ Antonio CEO Giulia Jones said. The café promises buon cibo, buon caffè e buoni amici – cioè, per gli anglofoni, “good food, good coffee, and good friends”. Hundreds of people attended the opening. A ribbon strung between giant tomato tins was ceremonially cut; volunteers made more than 400 coffees; and an accordion player regaled the crowd. “We will become the coffee shop for Page, and the whole community will come here,” Ms Jones said. “I can’t wait. It’s very exciting.” Little Italy is the first site in the Foundation for Social Health’s new Third Spaces network, which aims to tackle loneliness by creating places where social connection can happen naturally. The foundation hopes such places will address

both the separation of older Australians from everyday community life and growing levels of loneliness in the wider population. One in three Australians – and 40 per cent of Canberrans – reports being lonely. “Loneliness isn’t something we can solve by simply telling lonely people to go out and make friends,” CEO Melanie Wilde said. “We need to create the conditions that make connection easier – places where people can show up regularly, encounter one another and gradually build relationships.” “Aged care is probably the first place people get lonely in the community because they’re separated in a way from the community because of their physical or mental needs,” Ms Jones said. “They don’t see young children very often. They don’t see families and prams and kids on bikes. And I want all of that to be accessible to the residents.” The café serves cakes, pies, chicken sausage rolls, and scones made on site, as well as an ‘Italian sanguice’ – a ciabatta roll with preserved meats, cheese, and olive oil. And, of course, coffee. Little Italy Village Café will open from 7am to 11am seven days a week. Opening hours could be longer if demand warrants it. The Villaggio is also considering using its kitchen to sell frozen family meals to the wider community.

ACT Inclusion Awards a light on those making a difference To some, Emma Myers is a Disability Rights Journalist in the Parliamentary Press Gallery for Powerd Media Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. To others, she is an award-winning screenwriter, public speaker and disability advocate. As one of last year’s winners of the ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards, she’s urging others to nominate themselves or others for 2026 and celebrate people working to improve experiences for people with disability. “I love the fact I cover stories that matter to my community as someone with lived experience, because it’s important for someone to truly understand what’s being written about us and pushed out to the public, and the decisions being made about our lives,” said Emma. “Covering it from a lived experience perspective, I believe, is vital to getting the correct information out.” She said her nomination last year came as a huge surprise. “My organisation nominated me; I was quite shocked – thrilled, but shocked when I received the

email! Because honestly, I’ve only been in Canberra two years,” she said. “Just to be nominated and recognised for my work in the community at a state government level was quite flattering.” She said people who were nominating a friend or thinking about nominating themselves should expect more than just accolades for their hard work. “ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards really highlight the work being done on the ground when it comes to advocacy in the community. It’s a great night out and you meet so many interesting individuals who are all there for the right reasons – they love what they do and they are passionate about making a difference,” she said. Small change, big difference: who will you nominate? For many past nominees and winners, the recognition has been meaningful. Not just because of the award itself, but because someone took the time to say: we see what you’re doing, and it matters. Right now, there are countless inclusion champions

Emma Myers was among the winners of the 2025 ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards.

making a difference across the ACT. They may be teachers, volunteers, colleagues, business owners, advocates, community leaders or people quietly creating change behind the scenes. The question is: who will tell their story? If you know someone who is helping build a Canberra where people with disability are empowered to participate fully, contribute their talents and feel part of community, now is the perfect time to recognise their efforts. Nominations for the ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards are closing soon. Visit act.gov.au and search “Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards” to learn more and submit a nomination.

BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD CO

FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

Continuing with the sporting theme from last week and women’s issues in sport, I was saddened to see the foolish and possibly criminal behaviour of several Sydney Swans AFL players after an allegedly grog- and cocaine-fuelled evening out following a game in Melbourne. The club management and senior player group acted decisively in suspending five of them from playing, thus seeing the Swans’ chances of winning the Grand Final dive. The club and coach decided that the good reputation of the club was more important than a possible premiership. They took strong, firm action

for the good name of the club and the good of the game. That’s leadership. It’s a pity our PM and his cronies can’t do the same with such issues as the farcical Melongate saga or their attitude to the dreadful treatment meted out by the ABC to Gina Rinehart. Well done to the Swans, and I was delighted to see a huge crowd turn up to support their women’s team and also to stand by the men’s team, whose innocent players have been let down badly by their erstwhile teammates. At a local level, I had a very pleasant day out at Viking Park and had a few drinks with one of the first players I coached in the Hawks Under-12s, in 1973 to be exact – the effervescent Peter Hartas, who now helps coach Vikings thirds after stints in the UK and elsewhere. Peter played juniors with such greats as dual international and local Canberra boy Michael O’Connor. Congrats to Tuggers (Vikings) for getting all their senior men’s and women’s sides into the grand final – a great effort by a great club, which

most other local clubs love to hate, but which has done so much for local rugby, from funding the Kookaburras and Vikings in the Australian competition to helping bail out less well-off local clubs. Tuggers will play a good Royals side in firsts, who convincingly beat Queanbeyan last week; Uni-Norths (the Owls) in seconds, who won a tight game against the Queanbeyan Whites as well; and, in third grade, an experienced Wests third-grade side. In fourths, they’re up against Royals, and in colts, the Gungahlin Eagles. In the women’s, the ‘Viqueens’ play the very strong, undefeated Gungahlin Eagles side. The weather forecast is for a fine day. I will not attempt to pick who wins, as anything can happen on grand final day, nor will I say who I want to win, as I’ve had, over the last 60 years, associations with most of the clubs concerned, either personally or through my children. As they say in the classics, “rugby will be the winner on the day”! Good luck to all involved, and thanks to all officials and non-playing club staff for their often unsung efforts off the field.

ANU tech could detect Alzheimer’s 15 years before symptoms by NICHOLAS FULLER

16

27 August 2026

Canberra researchers are developing a portable technology that could help detect Alzheimer’s disease up to 15 years before symptoms appear and pancreatic cancer in its early stages. Dr Shankar Dutt, a physicist and nanobiotechnologist at the Australian National University’s Research School of Physics, is leading work on solid-state nanopore sensors that turn the behaviour of individual molecules into electrical signals, so researchers can detect proteins at extremely low concentrations. At the moment, conventional pathology methods can detect many molecules at once, but struggle when the concentration of a target protein becomes extremely low. Nanopore sensing can go much further because it detects individual molecules. “There are around 10,000 proteins in blood – it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, but even harder than that,” Dr Dutt said. “You are essentially looking for a drop of blood in an ocean.” For his work, Dr Dutt received the Symal Innovation Award at the 2026 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards NSW/ACT earlier this month. Much of Dr Dutt’s team’s research is focused on Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Dementia is now Australia’s leading cause of death, accounting for more than 17,500 deaths in

2024, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics; as the population grows older, deaths from dementia have risen by 39 per cent over the last decade. Current treatments work best in the disease’s early stages, but diagnosis often only comes after people are already losing their memory, Dr Dutt said. “By the time we are there, the disease has already progressed; there is no coming back,” Dr Dutt said. “There is a big need to detect Alzheimer’s in the early stage, so that we can take these drugs or even change our lifestyle to slow down the progression of disease.” As nerve cells in the brain break down, they release proteins, but the blood-brain barrier means only tiny concentrations reach the bloodstream. They can be detected by a spinal tap – but, as Dr Dutt put it, “that’s not very nice, and you can’t do it regularly”. Preliminary results indicate Dr Dutt’s technology can detect proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease 15 years before symptoms appear. The researchers are also studying why these proteins begin behaving abnormally and clumping in the brain. “If we can fully understand what’s going on, then we can find a cure,” Dr Dutt said. SkinMedics on Cohen Street

t’s been nearly six months since our Clinic Director, Dr Damien Bezzina, officially opened our doors to the Canberra and regional community. We would like to say a massive thank you to all our incredible patients, both new and old, for your support and for trusting us to take care of your skin health. As a medical skin cancer clinic, we exist to provide our wonderful patients with timely, expert skin cancer care. Our mission has always been simple: we look after your skin through advanced skin cancer detection, proactive prevention strategies and expert procedural work for skin cancer and lumps and bumps. Now in the second half of 2026, we wanted to let you know about some exciting additions to our skin cancer clinic work. Whilst our core focus has been, and will continue to be, medical and procedural skin cancer services, along with our lumps and bumps procedures, we are adding to our aesthetic services. This is a very exciting time for the clinic team, especially as we welcome Aesthetic Nurse Kieu to the team. Skin rehab is a term we like. Think of it as physical therapy, but exclusively for your skin. It’s about well-

ageing, focusing on the skin barrier and achieving a refreshed ‘you’. We don’t do plastic! We make you feel like you again, with subtle changes that make you feel and look a million dollars! We achieve this through our collaborative, doctorled plans and expert aesthetic nurse treatments. Our treatments don’t include harsh chemicals, acid peels or aggressive agents. For us, it’s about bucking the skincare product trend of ‘actives’ and getting back to fabulous, hand-picked skincare products and treatments to achieve a beautiful you! Perimenopausal and menopausal skin and male skin health are our areas of expertise, with great success in the art of subtle treatments and skincare for the middle-aged person. Dr Bezzina ensures every treatment is about your specific skin needs, whether it’s treatments or products! Yes, we did say male skin health! Thankfully, more men are seeking help in achieving and maintaining healthy, great-looking skin. However, we understand that some men don’t find ‘beauty’ clinics a place for them, and that’s why our medical clinic can help break down barriers to access. We’re not about glitz or an overly fussy clinic. It’s comfortable for men and women alike!

Aesthetic Nurse Kieu plays a vital role at SkinMedics.

Our fabulous Aesthetic Nurse Kieu is a key player, a registered nurse, qualified beauty therapist and aspiring skin clinician providing an expert level of treatment, from state-of-the-art laser to facials, microdermabrasion and much more! Kieu is here to help. We have the only current model of the multiwavelength Lumenis Stellar M22 Laser in the ACT. It’s not simply dual-wavelength like most other lasers, giving it a unique edge. It’s a multi-modality machine treating fine lines, pigmentation and facial veins and, most impressively, offering the Photo-Fabulous skin resurfacing protocol. Prepare to look fabulous! Nurse Kieu assesses exactly what your skin needs, and every treatment plan is reviewed by Dr Bezzina. He’s never far away should there be any questions. The aesthetic side of our business in no way compromises the skin cancer, dermatology and procedural work we offer. It complements it at every stage, and we will never stop protecting your skin and looking out for you. Skin cancer, lumps and bumps procedures, and skin checks never come second best at our clinic. We don’t chase the latest trends; we focus on preserving the health, strength and safety of your skin as you grow older. We can handle both medical and aesthetic needs. Progress, not perfection! ‘I Got You’: How Josh’s legacy is driving Canberra’s Trek of All Trades by BERNIE RYAN

Josh Clarke died unexpectedly by suicide in April 2021. Photo supplied

‘I Got You’ was one of the things that Josh Clarke’s friends and family would often hear from him when they needed support. According to his mum, Leesa Mountford, Josh was committed to

being there for those he loved and had no problem letting them know that he always had their backs. “Josh was a happy larrikin that wanted to make people happy,” Leesa says. “He was a big mental health advocate; he was always looking out for his mates. “He loved his family, loved his sisters, loved his mum.” However, on Sunday 11 April 2021, a day when Josh had insisted he wanted to go to work as a labourer in the new construction job that he loved, he instead took his life. His bosses had told Josh that he did not have to work and suggested he take the day off. But according to Leesa, Josh insisted on going in, telling them, “No, no, no. I’m turning up.” Leesa said that the connection to the building and construction industry was the first career move that really resonated with Josh.

“It brought Josh joy,” she says. “I don’t know if he would use that word, but it definitely gave him purpose.” This, amongst other things, had family, friends and employers believing that Josh was in a great place at the time he died. Josh was 25 years old. His sudden and tragic death was a horrific shock to all, including his two sisters, Mackenzie and Taylor. Reflecting on her deeply painful experience as a mother, and the ‘agony of the system and aftermath of the loss’ of Josh, Leesa feels so much for other parents. “I have this conversation with a lot of people when kids, when our teenagers, make wrong choices, that you hear people saying, ‘Where are the parents?’” Leesa says. “It’s not always that black and white. Sometimes the parents have tried everything, and they feel helpless.”

news Leesa encourages people concerned about or affected by suicide to keep reaching out for professional help, but also to support organisations like I Got You, StandBy Support, and Roses in The Ocean. “My advice would be to reach out because there are a lot of parents going through things when their children may just be going through a moment where they’re making wrong choices,” she says. Toward the end of 2021, Leesa and Josh’s family felt it important to honour Josh’s commitment to others and their mental health, using his own words, ‘I Got You’. To this end, they started creating online T-shirts and merchandise based on Josh’s own handwriting. By 2025, it became evident that there was an even greater need and the I Got You organisation was officially launched to build suicide awareness and empower the community in Josh’s memory.

Leesa says that I Got You is a “nonclinical” organisation with a strong “peer focus” centred around connection, “…so that people don’t feel that they are isolated”. The organisation facilitates regular ‘Tradie Tune-ups’ and ‘Tradie Toolbox Talks’, amongst other things, and an annual fundraising gala to support these activities, alongside small grants. I Got You recently received a Suicide Prevention Australia LiFE Award for the Trek of All Trades (Communities in Action category). On Sunday 20 September, I Got You invites Canberrans to the 2026 Trek of All Trades (a drive, not a walk). The team invites you to bring your crew, workplace, family or mates to be part of a community event built around connection, conversation and suicide prevention across the construction industry. Kamberra Winery Function Centre Car Park, Northbourne Avenue, at 8:30am and finishes at Black Mountain Peninsula. Registration is $20 per vehicle and includes an I Got You flag for your vehicle, an I Got You sticker and a ‘sausage sanger’ at the end of the Trek. Leesa says, “It’s really just a way of bringing the community together, checking in on each other, and bringing people together to connect and meet new people.” “But the meaning behind the trek is about remembering the lives that we have lost to suicide and supporting each other, because we’ve all been touched by suicide.” “It’s tough.” But for others, Leesa has a message born out of the lived experience no parent ever wants to share. “Don’t give up, and don’t give up hope,” she says. “Hope’s a big thing. Just look for your people.

Lean on your people.” You may be able to connect with people who understand what you are experiencing too, on 20 September. To register for Trek of All Trades, visit igotyou.org.au. If this story raises concerns for you or someone you know, support is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Canberra’s resident superhero by GEORGIA CURRY When kids meet their superhero, they usually want to be just like them when they grow up. But then life happens and they end up working a nine-to-five – but not Canberra’s Spider-Man. CBR Spidey (we can’t reveal his true identity) is living his childhood dream, donning a mask and assuming the character every weekend on the streets of Civic. All we can tell you is that he’s about the same age as Peter Parker in the Spider-Man movies, he grew up in Queanbeyan, and he does good-Samaritan work with sick kids in his day job. CBR Spidey, an ANU graduate who studied a Bachelor of

International Security (true story), is probably the most photographed person in Canberra, posing for hundreds of selfies with late-night revellers. His motivation is not to save the day, but to make people’s day. “I met Spider-Man as a kid when I was six years old at an amusement park in Wollongong and it’s come full circle; it had a larger impact on my life than I realised,” CBR Spidey said. “I just really love Spider-Man and I enjoy bringing joy and happiness to people as well. It was this full circle moment where the photos that I’m taking with kids, I’m essentially recreating of myself.” Late last year, CBR Spidey splurged on a quality Spider-Man suit and fell in love with it (he now

has three high-quality suits from the three live-action movie portrayals). This is now his dress code for a night out at either Mooseheads, Hopscotch, outside Civic Maccas, the Kingo or last weekend’s Raiders match (he even wears red on Canberra’s red light rail). I first spotted the web-slinger on the dance floor at Smith’s Alternative. “On an average night I’ll spend a couple of hours at a spot or do some laps and I can be surrounded by crowds of people asking for a photo,” he said. “I guess a guy dressed in a red and blue suit in the middle of the city is going to stand out.” Fittingly, it was on 1 August (International Spider-Man Day) that CBR Spidey realised this was his calling. “I had the privilege to advertise the new [Spider-Man] movie at Limelight Cinemas on that day and on the drive home afterwards, I had the massive revelation that I am who I wanted to be when I grew up,” he said. “I’ve really found my lane and it sounds really silly but I just accepted my passion – or obsession depending on who you ask – and I’m just running with it. Having worked at the hospital for so long, my first thought was to visit paediatric inpatients to make their day and it’s grown from there”. The most common question

he gets asked: can he really spin a web? (Yes, he has replica web shooters that actually do work.) He also gets asked if he can do a backflip (not yet) or if he can replicate the famous upside down kiss with onscreen love interest Mary Jane (no, there’s nothing in Civic to hang from). “Something as simple as getting into the Spidey pose can blow people’s minds,” he said. Like the Marvel character, who lives in Manhattan, CBR Spidey lives in the city, but despite the close proximity, it takes him an hour to get home because he keeps getting mobbed for photos. His lair/apartment is dotted with collectible Spider-Man figurines, mugs, key chains, a Velcro wallet and mobile phone cover. “Even under the mask, I smile for every photo that gets taken,” he said. “I guess I’ve known my lane for a long time, but I just didn’t know how to express it. I’ve grown a lot more confident being Spidey and being out in public. His personality has become second nature to me. “The anonymity adds to the fun of it. That’s another question people ask me: ‘Can you take your mask off?’ And I’m like, ‘No, it defeats the whole purpose of the mask.’” Follow @cbrspidey on Instagram to have your photo featured. canberradaily.com.au

GIVIT donation of the week: Curtains GIVIT is working with an organisation that supports and advocates for women impacted by domestic violence, homelessness, institutions and substance dependency. They are currently seeking support for a young mother who is rebuilding her life after a long period of homelessness and domestic violence. The mother has been doing her best to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of her children while navigating trauma and the challenges of life after family violence. The family is finally moving into a new home but requires support with household essentials. With very limited resources, GIVIT is requesting curtains to help the mother create a safe and comfortable home for her children. 27 AUGUST — 2 SEPTEMBER

Different environments bring out different sides of you. You’re one person at the carnival and another at the library. Since who you are depends, at least in part, on where you are, you may plan to spend more time in a place that, maybe, introduces you to a vers-ion of yourself you don’t often see.

STARS BY HOLIDAY MATHIS

Does it feel like too much work to keep a tally of every interaction?Unless you’re at work, it seems unnecessary to give too much attention to relationships. Maturity allows you to view them from a long perspective. Your capacity for love is so vast, it just feels good to put it out there. People show appreciation in different ways. Some say it, and some bring help or attention. You have favourably impacted others, and their efforts of respect will come in various forms, so look out with a generous interpretation and you may be moved by the quirky way they show up.

A job that was fun in the early stages may have lost its lustre and yet you continue on – most likely because someone needs you now. The responsibility will become fulfilling once more. Push through the tedium because there’s something on the other side that will fortify you. You care less about impressing other people than about becoming the kind of person you admire. This week’s challenge seems unassuming enough – maybe even a little boring. But hidden in its mundane package is an opportunity to make noble choices and do yourself proud. You needed something and found a way to make it happen. Your need was the first proof that others might want it, too – their response confirms the demand. What began as a personal solution could become a valuable service. You have the mind and follow-through to make it happen. A missing piece of information is a space where your imagination can run amok. Determine if you really need to know or simply would rather know. Avoid wasting time chasing the unnecessary when you could be placing your attention on what really makes a difference to you and yours. Do you suspect you’re working on the wrong things? Some items on your to-do list may not align with what’s ideal. Since you’re so intuitive, the fastest way to know what matters is to notice what keeps interrupting your thoughts. There’s an important reason it keeps coming up. You can’t help how you feel, but managing those feelings is a skill you’re determined to master. You’ll make progress this week. Every feeling that comes up is an opportunity to practice awareness. You’ll name emotions and meet them with curiosity to whatever extent you are able.

Diesel is ready to play what you request at The Q Theatre on 25 September. Photo: Jesse Lizotte

Diesel says we’ve forgotten something fundamental – now he’s bringing it to Queanbeyan

M

by BERNIE RYAN

ark Lizotte, who we know and love as the artist Diesel, is a fierce advocate of community and human connection. The six-time ARIA award winner, who arrived in Australia from the United States when he was seven years old, and who remains the only artist to win three consecutive Best Male Artist ARIAs in 1993, ’94 and ’95, believes we need much more connection – and we need it yesterday. Speaking with him last week via Zoom, it’s hard to believe that this authentic, enthusiastic, and still vibrantly prolific musician and adopted Australian is sixty years old. Thankfully, however, he is. For amidst a world of streamed music and increasing generations who barely know what a ‘gig’ is, Diesel still remembers what it was like to create and perform music in a musical ‘golden

28

27 August 2026

era’, which celebrated, supported and indeed nurtured Australian artists and their music. Artists he is still working hard to secure a future for through his ongoing commitment to songwriting (he is currently working on his 17th album), live performance (in his upcoming solely regional By Request tour), and targeted advocacy. The day before our interview, Diesel visited Australian Parliament House to speak on a range of issues aimed at supporting the live music industry at a “…grass roots level.” When it comes to the communities created by live music in once predominantly single owneroperators like pubs and other small venues, Diesel laments how much we have strayed from our human desire to be a part of something, together. “To feel that connection we have experienced since we all stood around a fire. It’s crazy that we

have forgotten it,” he says. True to his word, this quintessential Australian music legend has found a way to help us remember what it feels like to be truly present in a musical experience with both him and others. Uniquely, Diesel’s By Request tour places the setlist firmly in the hands of the audience, where fans are invited to submit the songs they want to hear before each performance, including cover songs. And Diesel does his best to perform them. Drawing from a catalogue that spans more than four decades, the result is an intimate, unpredictable and deeply personal evening where every show takes on a life of its own. Along with the acclaim the tour earned during its first chapter earlier this year, it is an experience that appears to be surpassing even Diesel’s own expectations. When guests select the songs they want to hear, they are also encouraged to leave a note as to why. This is the part that really impacts Diesel. “I love reading why particular songs are important to people,” he says. “Things like when their car broke down and they only had one cassette and listened to a certain song over and over,” he says. There was one note, however, that just “…blew my socks off,” Diesel says. And that was from Felicity. You can watch Diesel share with Bernie why Felicity’s story is so meaningful to him on canberradaily.com.au. Listening to Diesel, it’s not hard to feel what keeps him going. Again, Diesel reiterates it’s the connection. “It’s a really cathartic thing to be able to play music in front of people,” he says. “I get to let a lot of stuff out. I get to have like a therapy session on stage and connect with people and there’s a connection with every song that I play. “Sharing it with other people, it’s a rare thing that I get to do, and I don’t take it for granted at all.” I did not think for one second that he did. If you are lucky enough to be within cooee of a By Request show this spring, word is that you’ll feel like you are sitting on Diesel’s couch with a group of friends listening to stories, enjoying your favourite songs, finger snapping, reminiscing, clapping and singing along. Yes, for one night, you are part of Diesel’s community. And who knows, you might just remember how good it feels to belong to one. By Request is at the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre on 25 September. Tickets (and song requests!) via dieselmusic.com.au canberradaily.com.au

Former Moulin Rouge dancer, Kym Degenhart, works in Queanbeyan teaching cabaret dancing from her showgirl days.

Queanbeyan’s Moulin Rouge by GEORGIA CURRY Queanbeyan has a slice of Paris tucked away in its refined suburbs, with a former Moulin Rouge dancer re-living her high kicks in High Street. East Queanbeyan is a long way from Paris’ 18th arrondissement, but somehow showgirl Kym Degenhart found her way here from the City of Light. For someone who’d never planned to be a dancer (she studied journalism), Kym has had a remarkable dance career, including two years at the famed Moulin Rouge. You’ve seen the movie, now here’s the real-life version. “It’s really tough,” Kym said. “My audition went for four hours. They generally try and do a two-hour call before they make any cuts so it gives you time to settle the nerves 32

27 August 2026

and start to showcase your ability instead of panicking about learning the steps. “I came out of that audition with bleeding blisters.” Kym was only 21 when she entered the famous, historic cabaret that runs two shows a night, 365 days a year. She and 60 other dancers (14 different nationalities) performed six days a week, starting on the can-can line that’s a 12-minute marathon in a way”. “Over 700 shows I clocked up in my time there,” Kym said. The Moulin Rouge may look glamorous, but backstage the reality was gruelling. Each night Kym arrived at 8pm to do her makeup, body paint and check her dance positions for the two shows that last one hour and

45 minutes each (during which Kym was in 10 dances, each with a different costume). “We would climb a minimum of 638 stairs backstage every night because our dressing rooms were upstairs,” Kym said. “So for every single change between routines, we had to go up and down the stairs. The contract (written in French) that Kym signed was strict. Not only must Moulin Rouge dancers be a certain height, they must also maintain a certain weight and measurements. There were perks, however, such as free entry and drinks in VIP nightclubs in Paris and getting to meet Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz. On a rare day off, Kym would explore the city because – unlike

sleepy Queanbeyan – Paris is open 24 hours. “Because you’re performing until 1am in the morning, you wouldn’t go to sleep until about 3am and you’d sleep through till about midday,” she said. “It definitely is like night shift.” These days, Kym works not far from the Molonglo River, a long way from the River Seine in Paris. The nearby low-level bridge is far from Pont Alexandre III, her favourite Parisian bridge where she’d watch the lights of Eiffel Tower. “It’s a conversation starter that’s for sure,” Kym said. “It wasn’t ever really my plan to be a dancer so that’s probably the most ironic part of it all, but I’m so grateful to be paid to do something that I absolutely love.” After high-kicking and cartwheeling with the Moulin Rouge, Kym wound up in Queanbeyan through work, originally brought to Canberra to be a principal of a dance studio and later teaching at Canberra high schools. Today, she has her own dance studio: Bom Funk. “I’ve been here for 13 years now and I never thought I’d end up here out of all places,” Kym said. “We’ve created a little showgirl company – High Kix Cabaret – which gives local dancers the opportunity to learn, perform and experience this style of dance.” Out of Moulin Rouge’s 1000+ costumes of feathers, rhinestones and sequins and 800 pairs of shoes, Kym has only a jar full of tiny souvenirs. “If we were dancing on the stage and could see a bead – like when we were in a split on the ground in can-can – we’d try and pick up the beads,” she said. Apparently there’s a saying that floats around the entertainment industry: “Once a Moulin Rouge Girl, Always a Moulin Rouge Girl.” For more info about High Kix: bomfunk.com.au

Drives A Bit Funny by Stephen Corby

Whispering Death by Patricia Skehan

Harper Collins, $34.99 Prolific journalist Stephen Corby has written on numerous topics for various publications, but in recent years has largely focused on motoring. Drives A Bit Funny is an amusing account of his obsession with cars and driving. Part memoir and part just entertaining stories, it is a dazzling collection of observations about cars and other things, including the shrinking of Tim Tams. From memories about the battered Land Rover that he learnt to drive in, to tales about international car launches, to reflections on the current dismal state of the ute, it is a laugh-a-page read. Cyclists, however, should miss the section on lube and Lycra. Good fun. Highly recommended.

Hachette, $34.99 Dads who like popular military history will enjoy Patricia Skehan’s Whispering Death. In 2012, former World War II Beaufighter pilot Lerryn Mutton arrived on the doorstep of history writer Patricia Skehan armed with twenty boxes of official documents and photographs and asked her to write his wartime story. Intrigued, Patricia recorded Mutton’s memories of his wartime experiences and those of his navigators and ground crew. Drawing on those recordings, and Mutton’s documents, Patricia has produced a loosely structured account of Australian Beaufighter squadrons during World War II, and other related topics. An interesting compilation of stories unencumbered by deep analysis.

King of Beasts by Tony Park Macmillan, $34.99 Tony Park is a terrific adventure writer, and his African-based novels are always a reading highlight. His latest, King of Beasts, is another enjoyable tale that once again features former mercenary Sonja Kurtz. The story revolves around the kidnapping of Sonja’s daughter in Ukraine and the return of a Russian terrorist to South Africa to shoot a white lion in a sanctioned hunt and to settle some old scores. Spurred into action, Sonja finds herself engaged in a deadly hunting game. Combining brisk action with an exciting plot and vivid descriptions of African wildlife and the problems that it faces, King of Beasts is a great read.

Now sh wing Tony (MA15+)

In 1975, 19-year-old Anthony “Tony” Bourdain (Dominic Sessa) applies for a writing fellowship at Vassar College. After informing his family and old high school crush Nancy (Emilia Jones), who is spending the summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts, that he has already gotten it, Tony is soon let down by the board. Trapped in his lie, Tony impulsively heads to Provincetown and quickly finds more trouble in Chef Jose’s (Antonio Banderas) seafood restaurant. After his 1999 New Yorker tell-all piece about the kitchen habits of New York City restaurants and a bestselling memoir, Anthony Bourdain became a prominent media personality, capturing the hearts and stomachs of millions. Bourdain took audiences into all corners of the world to fully explore micro-cultures 34

through his grounded, unpretentious food adventures. While his untimely death was confusing, shocking, and saddening, the movie serves as a prequel to the man many grew to know and love. Avoiding the modern-day habit of listing a blow-by-blow of facts like a Wikipedia article, the biography instead narrows its focus to a formative period in Bourdain’s life that ultimately put him on his culinary path. The rambunctious Tony has a tumultuous summer, seduced by the restaurant scene through its hard days, wild nights, and the opportunity to find his purpose. Lead Dominic Sessa turns in a star performance, taking an uncontrollable character who frustratingly cannot get out of his own way and making the audience not only care, but cheer for him to overcome and succeed. Verdict: An addictive coming-ofage story for old and new fans. . - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Dendy Cinemas. canberradaily.com.au

Why people stay in situations that make them miserable wi C

DR VIVIENNE LEWIS

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve said to yourself, “I know I’m unhappy, so why can’t I leave?” People ask this about relationships, jobs, friendships and all sorts of situations that are emotionally draining or mentally exhausting. Friends often become frustrated watching someone stay in something so clearly making them unhappy, yet the reality is that

leaving is rarely simple. One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that leaving difficult situations should be easy. There are many psychological reasons people stay even when they are miserable and I’ll talk about them now. Firstly, the brain generally prefers familiarity over uncertainty, even when the familiar situation is unhealthy. We are wired to seek predictability because it feels safer. The unknown, on the other hand, activates fear and anxiety. People often start asking themselves questions like: What if I regret leaving? What if I can’t cope financially? What if things get worse? These fears can keep people emotionally stuck for years. Another is that anxiety also encourages avoidance. The more overwhelmed someone feels, the harder it can become to make decisions or act. Rather than confronting the fear of change, people often stay where they are because it feels emotionally safer in the short term. There is also something psychologists call “loss aversion.” Human beings tend to focus more heavily on what they might lose than what they might gain. Even when a person knows they are unhappy, they may worry more about losing financial security, routines, family stability or relationships than about the

possibility of future happiness. Guilt and shame can also play a major role. Many people feel guilty about upsetting others or worry they will be judged for leaving a relationship, changing careers or walking away from long-term commitments. People often remain stuck because they keep waiting for the “right time” to leave. But the perfect time rarely arrives. Over time, people can become so emotionally exhausted that they stop trusting themselves and simply continue functioning in survival mode. Many people also confuse being used to something with being happy. For friends and family, this can be difficult to watch. It is common to become frustrated and wonder why someone does not “just leave.” But judgment rarely helps. Most people already know they are unhappy. What they often need instead is support, patience and understanding while they work through their fears and build confidence in their ability to cope with change. Sometimes the hardest part is not recognising that something is wrong. It is believing you can create something better.
