sponsored Springout Festival

Springout 2026: Five weeks to be

S

yourself

pringOUT 2026 is the biggest Pride season Canberra has seen. Festival Director Danny Corvini explains why, and where to start. There’s an old rule in festival-land that every season should be a little bit bigger and better than the last one. This year, SpringOUT will do just that. This year’s festival runs for five weeks instead of four, from Friday 23 October to Tuesday 1 December. Across that stretch, you’ll find some 41 events, and that’s before we add the 17 queer sporting events packed into the Sport Your Pride program from 13 to 15 November! That’s even longer than the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! How a festival grows The SpringOUT committee itself produces just five (albeit huge!) events each season. Everything else on the program comes from our community partners: sporting clubs, galleries, venues, health organisations, artists and performers and the many small groups with an idea and the energy to make it happen. SpringOUT is a festival that Canberra puts on for itself, and that’s why the festival can look different from year to year, apart from a couple of well-known events. This year, that energy arrived early. We usually open with Fair Day, but the National Portrait Gallery invited us to join forces as it planned to bring drag

superstar Courtney Act to Canberra a week earlier for the unveiling of her new portrait and some spin-off events – and voilà, we got a new start date! (Who could say no to Courtney?) With the festival now a week longer, other community organisers jumped at the opportunity too, so SpringOUT 2026 will now begin in Queanbeyan on Friday 23 October with The Place That Shapes Us exhibition, most likely the first time Canberra’s Pride festival has started over the border. But it’s the next day, Saturday 24 YaYa, Canberra’s first female club DJ and former October, that might Heaven nightclub resident, will bring the iconic be the best single venue’s spirit back to life at One Night in Heaven Whether snapshot of what 3 on 27 November. you’re SpringOUT is all about. Laughs, sport and live music Sport Your Pride takes over from 13 to 15 November, with 17 events celebrating queer sports and the clubs that make room for everyone. The SpringOUT Comedy Gala at The Street Theatre on Thursday 19 November has become one of the season’s hottest tickets, so this year we’ve added a second show. Choose the 6pm or 8.15pm session, hosted by Holly Hazlewood, with a line-up of the best queer comedians from Canberra and Sydney. The following night, Pride-Day Night Shopping returns to Westfield Belconnen for a second year. And on Saturday 21 November, we welcome back Loud & Proud at Dissent, our live music night featuring all trans and nonbinary artists. One more night in Heaven This week’s Canberra Weekly cover star, YaYa, was Canberra’s first female club DJ and a resident at Heaven canberradaily.com.au

nightclub, the city’s first out-and-proud commercial gay and lesbian club. “When Heaven Nightclub opened above Garema Place in April 1993, it didn’t just give Canberra’s LGBTQIA+ community a venue – it gave us a home,” she recalls. “A neon-lit refuge where gay men, lesbians, trans folk, drag queens, drag kings, goths, ravers, artists and misfits collided in one glorious, creative, energy-filled swirl.” YaYa’s hands-in-the-air handbag house sets made her one of the scene’s best-loved figures until Heaven’s final night on New Year’s Day 2001. For YaYa, Heaven was always about freedom: “For a few hours, everyone on that dancefloor could be exactly who they wanted to be.” Thirty-odd years on, that’s still what the Heaven parties are all about. On Friday 27 November, YaYa is curating One Night in Heaven 3 at Fiction nightclub in the city, bringing back the original Heaven DJs alongside drag queens, go-go

dancers and the biggest dancefloor bangers of the ‘90s and 2000s. Expect three generations of clubbers sharing one dancefloor. Whether you danced there in the ‘90s or not, YaYa has an invitation for you: “For one night, walk through the doors and be catapulted straight back to Heaven.” Look after our venues A serious note among the glitter: queer spaces are fragile. In the weeks before this festival, Canberra lost two bars that hosted LGBTIQA+ events, Shadows and Queenies. When venues close, communities lose places to meet, to perform and to feel safe. That’s why I’m so grateful to have ChiChiz, our new official venue partner, which is hosting after-parties for Fair Day, Sport Your Pride and the festival finale on Saturday 28 November. Please support every venue, bar, gallery and theatre that opens its doors to us this season. Buy a ticket, buy a drink, bring a friend. That’s how they stay open.

Ending together After five weeks of celebration, the festival closes on a reflective note. On Tuesday 1 December, World AIDS Day, Meridian hosts an early-morning gathering at the AIDS Garden of Reflection at the National Arboretum from 8.30am. It’s a chance to stand in solidarity with people living with HIV, remember those we’ve lost, and recommit to ending stigma. Registration is free. It’s a reminder that Pride has always held both joy and grief. The freedom to be ourselves was hard-won by those who came before us, and until equality is universal, it’s a fight that we must continue. The full program is in this issue of Canberra Weekly and online at springout.com.au. Pick an event, or five, and come and be yourself with us. Happy SpringOUT, Canberra. Danny Corvini is Festival Director of SpringOUT, Canberra’s LGBTIQA+ Pride Festival.

The secret to a long and happy life? Just ask 102-year-old Margarita

Margarita Lopez celebrates her 102nd birthday with her daughter, Angela Gonzalez. Photo: Lisa Samaras

The secrets to a long and happy life are often the simplest, and one local woman might know a thing or two about them.

Margarita Lopez, a resident at Arcare Aged Care in Wright, celebrated her 102nd birthday on Saturday 17 October, surrounded by the love of a family spanning five generations. Although her official paperwork from Uruguay lists her birthday as 3 November, the date her birth was registered, her family knows she was born on 17 October 1924. Margarita’s family includes two children, Angela, 71, and Eduardo, 67, five grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. For 17 years, she lived with her daughter, Angela Gonzalez, before moving into Arcare in January this year. Her late husband, Antonio, also enjoyed a long life, passing away in 2015 at the age of 94. Despite not speaking English, Margarita has formed close connections with the staff who care for her, proving that a smile can sometimes say more than words. “She is a wonderful and charming woman,”

“Dad isn’t ready for aged care”

says Pema Gyeltshen, a Personal Support Worker at Arcare who looks after her. “All the carers absolutely love her. She’s even been teaching me some Spanish words.” According to Angela, her mother’s longevity comes down to a healthy upbringing, moderation and a positive outlook. Growing up in Uruguay, Margarita drank fresh goat’s milk, which she believes helped give her a strong foundation for life. These days, she enjoys a little bit of everything, particularly traditional favourites such as ravioli and tortilla paella. She has never smoked and still enjoys the occasional small glass of sweet Moscatto wine. But perhaps her greatest secret is her attitude towards life. “She is always happy,” Angela shares. “She has always met every single day with a positive attitude.” After more than a century of family memories, shared meals and everyday joys, Margarita continues to show that happiness can be found in life’s simplest pleasures. ¡Feliz Cumpleaños, Margarita!

Dad was lonely in the house by himself. He was still independent but needed a little domestic help. Then we found The Grange Deakin Serviced Apartments. After a little encouragement Dad moved in and within days couldn’t stop thanking me. Dad has his own apartment, but now he’s surrounded by company and regular social activities. Household chores are no longer a burden, with weekly apartment cleaning and linen changes included. Plus, the pressure of home maintenance is gone. Dad’s now out doing the things he loves again. I know Dad eats well every day, with breakfast and two home-cooked meals provided. For added peace of mind, there’s someone onsite 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. Now when we talk, it’s without the worry and nagging. Dad couldn’t be happier. The Grange is not aged care, and personal care services are not provided.

With meals, weekly cleaning and linen changes included, Home Care Package funding can be directed towards Clinical Care and Independent Support services.

Trump betrays Ukraine

CO

NTRIBU

TO

with BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

I never thought I’d ever be involved in a demonstration outside the US embassy, as I always had faith in the US as the bastion of the free world. As John F. Kennedy said at his inauguration as President in January 1961, “The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans – born in this century, tempered by war (WW2), disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage – and unwilling to witness

12

22 October 2026

or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed.” Sadly, the current president, Donald Trump, has betrayed that trust with his inexplicable attitude to Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. His recent efforts to ease sanctions on Russia and appease Putin reward an evil dictator committed to destroying human rights and waging a war of blatant aggression against a free people. Now, in my view, Trump has done many good things. He has highlighted the net zero nonsense, supported the only democratic state in the Middle East, Israel, and stood up to wokeism and political correctness, to name a few. However, all his fine achievements are rendered irrelevant due to his stubborn refusal to help the brave Ukrainian people and their heroic, inspirational President Volodymyr

Zelenskyy. To allow Russia to sell diesel and also to restrict Ukrainian access to Starlink, which allows Ukraine to target Russian assets and gives early warning of Russian attacks, was criminal. I don’t know what Putin has over him, but as Putin seems to enjoy taunting and humiliating him by breaking whatever agreement Trump gets Putin to agree to, it seems crazy to continue to pander to him. Just last week, within a day or so of Trump trumpeting a two-month ceasefire on attacks on energy sources in Russia and Ukraine, Putin launched strikes on Ukrainian energy assets. Trump’s actions also put US military lives at risk and have already led to several deaths of US service personnel in the Middle East. Russia shares detailed targeting knowledge, otherwise unavailable to the IRGC, with Iran to help it target US assets in the area and, as a result, kill US service personnel. That’s treason in my book.

Trump’s support of Putin therefore not only hurts US allies but kills members of the US military. Presidents Kennedy and Ronald Reagan would be turning in their graves! If Trump had fully supported Ukraine from the start, that war might now be over. I believe there is a need for all US allies to tell Trump in blunt terms that, for the sake of the West, he needs to fully support Ukraine. The new US Senate and House of Representatives after the November elections also need to force him to support Ukraine. Recent history shows he is susceptible to pressure, and if US allies show an aggressive and united front, then there is a good chance he will come to heel. And yes, even Albo can play a role here – after all, Ukraine is shedding her blood for Australian freedom as well as Europe’s freedom. We can and must do more to help.

Who gives away a car for their first birthday? The Shed does! by BERNIE RYAN To celebrate their first year of trading, most businesses might decorate with balloons, offer special discounts, or give away small promotional gifts on the day. This, however, was not going to fly on the first anniversary of the increasingly popular second-hand store, The Shed, on Dairy Road, Fyshwick. So, what did owner Adam Charif do instead? He gave away a car. Yes, in the lead-up to the anniversary, Adam asked people to write in as to why they needed his muchloved Toyota Corolla. “It was my personal car for years … a great car,” Adam said. “I knew a lot of people in Canberra didn’t have access to a good quality vehicle, so I thought, what better way to celebrate our anniversary.” The Shed received around 100 nominations from people across the community whose lives

14

had become incredibly restricted without reliable transport. Adam said that the selection process was very difficult. “I wish I had twenty cars … there were some beautiful stories, some very sad stories. It was heartbreaking,” he said. The recipient of Adam’s generosity, single mum and youth worker Karen, says she is still in shock. “When Adam threw me the keys, I paused for a moment and thought, ‘Oh, I’m holding keys to a car! Oh, this is my car!’” Karen says. “It feels ridiculously overwhelming; It’s such a beautiful thing … I’m really super, super grateful.” Car Care Queanbeyan, which has serviced the car for years, also donated two services to accompany the car giveaway. “It is so good to be reminded that there are still good people in the world,” says Karen. As surprisingly generous as this gesture may appear, regular visitors to The Shed will not be

surprised at all. Not only are The Shed prices very reasonable, but children’s toys, clothes, shoes and baby equipment are always free. “It is very important to me that kids have access to good quality clothes and shoes, and toys, as unfortunately I didn’t have any of that as a child, and it is sort of a soft spot for me,” he says. Do you have something you no longer need? Adam knows exactly what to do with it. Invest it in the life of someone else. The Shed is located at 4/1 Dairy Rd, Fyshwick. Local healthcare focus: Convenient and comprehensive, healthcare in the heart of Bruce From everyday GP appointments to skin cancer checks and chronic disease support, Ochre Medical Centre Bruce brings a broad range of healthcare services together in one convenient location. Finding time for healthcare can be difficult when work, study, family and everyday commitments compete for attention. Health concerns rarely arrive at a convenient moment, and it is easy to put off a check-up or delay booking an appointment. Having a medical centre that offers convenient appointments, accessible parking and a broad range of services can make it easier to prioritise your health. Located in Building 28 at the University of Canberra, Ochre Medical Centre Bruce provides general practice and a range of additional medical services for the local community. With same-day GP appointments often available and extended opening hours across seven days, the practice aims to make care easier to access when health concerns arise. “We know it isn’t always easy to fit healthcare into a busy week. Having a range of services, extended opening hours and convenient parking helps make it easier for people in Bruce and the surrounding community to access the care they need,” says Maria Haider, Practice Manager at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce.

More services, one convenient location Ochre Medical Centre Bruce offers a wide range of services, including general practice, women’s health, chronic disease management, allergy services, cardiology, antenatal care, sexual health, sports medicine, vaccinations and minor procedures. Having these services under one roof means patients can often address several health needs with a team that already knows their history. Rather than moving between different providers, patients can build an ongoing relationship with their GP and the wider practice team, which supports continuity of care over time. The practice also provides access to pathology services, making it simpler to complete tests requested by your doctor. Convenience extends beyond the consulting room. The centre offers free on-site parking for one hour, helping patients fit appointments around other commitments. Its location at the University of Canberra also makes it accessible to people living, working or studying in Bruce and the wider Belconnen area.

With early weekday openings and appointments available on Saturdays and Sundays, the practice provides options for people who find it difficult to attend during traditional business hours. Support for ongoing health conditions For people living with long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease or arthritis, regular care can make a real difference to day-to-day

wellbeing. The practice’s nurses, who are trained in chronic disease management, work alongside GPs to support patients with ongoing monitoring, health education and regular reviews. GPs can work with patients to develop a care plan suited to their needs and goals, and coordinate care with other health professionals where appropriate. Patients can ask their GP whether they may be eligible for Medicaresupported chronic condition care.

and service. Patients are encouraged to contact reception to confirm costs before attending. To find out more about the

doctors, services and appointment availability, visit ochrehealth.com. au/medical-centre-bruce or call (02) 6180 8500.

Looking after your skin Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and finding changes early can give patients more treatment options. The Ochre Skin Cancer Clinic at Bruce provides dedicated skin health services for the local community. Skin checks can help identify suspicious spots, moles or other changes that may need further investigation. The clinic offers skin examinations using a dermatoscope and digital imaging to help doctors assess skin lesions and monitor changes over time. Depending on the findings, further assessment or treatment may include a biopsy, cryotherapy, prescription treatment or surgical removal. The appropriate approach will depend on each patient’s circumstances and clinical assessment.

Between appointments, it is worth getting to know your own skin and looking out for spots that are new, changing in size, shape or colour, or that look different from others. Patients who notice a change can discuss their concerns with the clinic’s doctors and find out which services are suitable for their needs. Healthcare that fits your life Whether you need a routine GP appointment, support managing an ongoing condition, a vaccination or a skin check, Ochre Medical Centre Bruce offers a broad range of services in a convenient location. The practice operates as a mixedbilling clinic, with consultation fees and Medicare rebates varying according to the appointment

Why more Canberrans are choosing op shops first by VINNIES CANBERRA/GOULBURN For a growing number of Canberrans, the op shop is no longer the alternative. It’s the first stop. Driven by cost-of-living pressures, sustainability and the growing popularity of pre-loved fashion and homewares, more people are turning to op shops before buying new. From students and young families to professionals, downsizers and retirees, Canberrans are embracing second-hand shopping as a smart way to save money, reduce waste and uncover unique finds. Whether it’s a winter coat, a statement outfit, furniture for a first home, books, toys or home décor, op shops offer value and individuality while giving quality items another life. Increasingly, shoppers are discovering that buying pre-loved is not just good for their budget. It’s good for the community too. When you shop at Vinnies, the value doesn’t end at the checkout. Every purchase helps keep usable goods in circulation while generating funds that support Vinnies’ work with people experiencing

hardship across the region. Across its network of 28 Vinnies Shops throughout the ACT and surrounding regions, customers are seeking out everything from affordable everyday essentials to quality brands and one-of-a-kind treasures. “People are often surprised by the quality and variety of items they can find in our shops,” said Jason Hitchick, Retail Operations Manager at Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn. “We’re seeing a real shift in the way people think about op shopping. People are coming to us for affordability, but also for quality, sustainability and the thrill of finding something unique. Every purchase has an impact that goes well beyond the item itself, helping support people experiencing hardship across our region.” That is part of what makes shopping at Vinnies different. A purchase in a Vinnies shop creates benefits far beyond the customer who takes an item home. It helps fund practical support for local people while extending the life of quality goods that might

otherwise end up in landfill. In 2025-26, Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn responded to more than 20,000 requests for assistance and delivered over 50,000 meals through frontline services including Roadhouse and Blue Door. That commitment to making the most of donated goods extends beyond Vinnies Shops. Through Andrew Barber’s team at Goodies Junction and the Vinnies Distribution Centre, donated items are reused, repurposed and redirected to where they can do the most good. Andrew Barber, Manager of Goodies Junction, said more Canberrans are recognising the environmental and community benefits of choosing pre-loved goods. “Goodies Junction is built on the idea that quality items still have value. Every item that can be reused, repurposed or resold helps keep valuable resources in circulation and creates positive outcomes for people and the environment.” Vinnies is encouraging Canberrans to make one simple change to their shopping habits: before buying new, try your local Vinnies first. You might save money. You might discover something unexpected. And every time you choose pre-loved, you’re giving an item another life while helping support people experiencing hardship in our community.

Canberra mum’s daughter inspires award-winning designs

Mimi Blankets founder Monika Mironov with daughter Sofia. Image supplied.

What began as one Canberra mother’s determination to make life easier for her daughter has become an internationally recognised adaptive product, with Mimi Blankets celebrating two wins at the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards. On Friday 9 October, Mimi Blankets founder Monika Mironov attended the awards ceremony

Recognising that other wheelchair users, parents and carers experienced similar frustrations, Monika set out to develop a blanket specifically for people seated in wheelchairs and mobility strollers. Over two years, the Mimi Blanket was refined through prototyping and feedback from parents, carers, therapists and the wider disability community. Unlike conventional blankets, Mimi Blankets feature an integrated attachment system that secures the blanket to wheelchair or mobility stroller frames, helping prevent slipping and fabric becoming caught in wheels. The design also features an adjustable frontaccess neck opening, wheelchair-optimised dimensions and a detachable hood. Monika also acknowledged the customers, families and supporters who helped transform her original idea into something much bigger. “To every person and family who has trusted us, shared their experiences, recommended Mimi Blankets or supported our little business – thank you,” she said. “You helped turn one mum’s solution into something so much bigger.” For more info, visit mimiblankets.com.au

at the International Convention Centre Sydney alongside her family, including daughter Sofia, whose everyday needs inspired the award-winning design. The Mimi Blanket received two awards recognised across separate design disciplines: Product Design – Sport and Lifestyle, and Fashion and Textiles. For Monika, however, the most meaningful part of the evening wasn’t the awards themselves. It was having Sofia there to celebrate. “That was the best part,” she says. Mimi Blankets was born from Monika’s experience as a mother and carer to Sofia, who has profound disabilities and uses a wheelchair. “I remember those cold Canberra walks, constantly stopping to pick up her blanket, tuck it back in and make sure it wasn’t getting caught in her wheelchair,” Monika recalled. “I kept thinking, surely there has to be a better way. There wasn’t. So, I decided to create one.”

Four teammates. Ten challenges. One powerful reason.

Y

ou could spend another team day around a boardroom table, workshopping strengths and weaknesses OR you could discover them in action – finding out who keeps their cool, who spots the solution and whose competitive streak takes everyone by surprise. On Thursday 12 November, Canberra’s Amazing Raise invites you to put your team to the test at Brindabella Park, Canberra Airport. Canberra Hospitals Foundation’s popular Big Wig Challenge has evolved into a team event with a clear invitation: Rise to the Challenge. Raise for Canberra. Teams of four will tackle ten airport-themed challenges, combining teamwork, problem-solving and friendly rivalry while raising funds to support local patients and families. Expect plenty of laughs, opportunities to discover hidden talents and a thrilling zipline finale from the roof of Brindabella Business Park. A team day with a powerful purpose Behind the challenges is a cause that connects workplaces across our region: enhancing the hospitals and health services our families, friends and colleagues rely on. Life can change out of the blue. An accident, an unexpected diagnosis or a sudden illness can turn an ordinary day into one a family will never forget. Community generosity helps Canberra Hospitals Foundation make those experiences more comfortable, connected and hopeful. Through Giving Comfort, Powering Research, Shaping Tomorrow and Building Community, supporters help strengthen care across our public health services.

canberradaily.com.au

That support takes many forms: robotic rehabilitation technology helping patients work towards greater independence; relaxing spaces where parents can rest close to their premature or unwell baby; research supporting best care across emergency and cancer treatments; and therapeutic programs, including therapy dog visits, bringing comfort during difficult hospital stays. Entering Canberra’s Amazing Raise is a chance to help make that support possible - while giving your own team a shared experience to remember. Who’s on the passenger manifest? Longtime Foundation partners Canberra Airport, Icon Water, Workday, Mix 106.3FM and Canberra Weekly are returning to take on the challenge. Rural Funds Management is joining for the first time and faces friendly competition from law firms Proctor Legal and Snedden Hall & Gallop Lawyers, who will partner up with RSM to fill their team. For Snedden Hall & Gallop, participating is a way to give back to the community that supports their business. For Director Tom Lindenmayer, the cause is also deeply personal. Family friend Christopher Rogers needed frequent hospital care throughout his life before passing away in June, aged 12. His parents have spoken warmly about the support Canberra Hospitals Foundation provided along the way. That connection brings home the purpose behind the challenges: supporting patients and families when they need it most. The team is looking forward to connecting with like-minded Canberra businesses and discovering a little more about their own colleagues. Their teammate to watch? Ellen Teys – because, as the team puts it, “there’s nothing quite like the competitive

streak that comes from a litigation lawyer”. Susan Proctor of Proctor Legal sees the difference community support makes through her role as Foundation Chair. “As Chair of Canberra Hospitals Foundation, it is a privilege to be able to raise monies that directly support healthcare workers, patients and research across our public health services, that every family across Canberra relies on at some point and to take part in some friendly competition at the same time,” she said. Assemble your crew Whether your colleagues bring sharp thinking, creative solutions, calm leadership or boundless enthusiasm, this is their chance to put those strengths to work for Canberra. Participation is capped at 20 teams of four. Each team commits to a minimum fundraising target of $8,000, with fundraising pages, ideas and support provided by Canberra Hospitals Foundation. Four colleagues from your workplace could help make a difference for countless others. Bring your team together, choose your name (and theme song) and claim your place on the departure board. You’ll leave with shared memories – and the knowledge that your efforts will help local patients and families through some of their toughest days. I’m Good: More Canberrans are rethinking alcohol For a number of Canberrans, drinking less is about little changes that add up to feeling better. A recent survey found that one in three Canberrans are planning to cut back or cut out alcohol, reflecting a broader shift in attitudes towards drinking and wellbeing. More and more people are discovering that cutting back on alcohol is a positive change that supports their everyday life. It can start with small decisions such as skipping a drink during the week, selecting an alcohol-free option at a social event, or simply questioning habits that have become automatic. Brendan from Belconnen knows that feeling. After an injury forced him to step back from activities he

loved, he began reassessing his relationship with alcohol. Now, more than a year after cutting out alcohol, he says the benefits have extended well beyond physical health. “I think the biggest thing with cutting out alcohol was knowing people can see me flourish, (I’m) feeling good, lighter, more buoyant, healthier,” Brendan says. If you want to make a change but aren’t sure where to start, explore practical tips, tools and stories from Canberrans who are drinking less at imgood.org.au I’m Good is an initiative of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), supported by the ACT Government through the Healthy Canberra Grants program.

Canberra sporting groups raise money for life-saving defibrillators by NICHOLAS FULLER Canberra sporting groups are being challenged to raise $3,000 to install publicly accessible defibrillators, as part of a campaign launched today on World Restart a Heart Day. “For sporting groups, there’s a heightened risk of cardiac arrest for people doing sport,” Ivan Slavich, CEO of GoodLoop Mutual (formerly Service One Mutual), says. “That’s why we want to have them at playing fields and courts, etc.” Automated external defibrillators cost $3,500; Community Bank Canberra and Region (part of Bendigo Bank) will contribute the remaining $500 for every AED. To launch the campaign, an AED was installed today at Stromlo Forest Park. Women’s mountain bike group Dirt Maidens had raised $3,500 in four days. “As a registered nurse, and a mum of a child with a heart condition, we notice the defibs everywhere we go,” Claire McDonnell, a member of the group, posted on Facebook. “Now there’s one at a place where we ride regularly. Now there’s one for anyone else out there who may need one.” Canberra has already become the first city in the world with a 24/7 unlocked AED in every suburb, thanks to StreetBeat – a community program run in partnership between GoodLoop and St John Ambulance ACT, supported by Community Bank Canberra and Region (part of Bendigo Bank). So far, they have rolled out 77 AEDs in Canberra and five in NSW (Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong, and two in Cooma). GoodLoop Mutual will pay for the cost of replacing batteries and pads; St John Ambulance will monitor and track the AEDs in case they get used,

stolen or vandalised, Mr Slavich said. “A lot of people don’t understand the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest,” Mr Slavich said. “A heart attack is plumbing, and generally older people that have got clogged arteries. Cardiac arrest can hit any age, and often hits people doing sport.” Learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use an AED can save a life, the ACT Ambulance Service advises. David Dutton, chief officer of the ACT Ambulance Service, said: “While our paramedics provide exceptional emergency care every day, survival from cardiac arrest often depends on what happens before an ambulance arrives. The actions of those first on scene can make all the difference.” You can help restart a heart by following three simple steps, he advises: 1. CALL Triple Zero (000) immediately, and follow the emergency call taker’s instructions. 2. Begin chest compressions: place your hands in the centre of the person’s chest and PUSH hard and fast. The advised rate is 100 to 120 beats per minute. “One of the most powerful things about CPR is that anyone can do it,” Mr Dutton said. “You do not need to be a healthcare professional to save a life.” • SHOCK: Use an AED if one is available. Turn the device on and follow the voice prompts. To support the StreetBeat cause, visit streetbeat.life

ACT Children’s Week

GIVIT is working with an organisation that provides programs and support services for workers and their families in the building, construction and related industries. They are currently seeking support for a young father who was injured at work. This dad has been waiting for confirmation of claim acceptance from the insurer before being compensated. Any support for their basic needs is urgently needed, so GIVIT is requesting grocery vouchers to help ease their financial hardship at this time. Generous Canberrans can donate grocery vouchers or fund the purchase of this item. 100% of your financial donation will be used to purchase what’s needed. To help, please visit: GIVIT.org.au/what’s-needed, search: Location State: ‘ACT’, Keywords: ‘grocery voucher’ and Suburb: ‘Wanniassa, 2903’.

On the hunt for: inspiration for the new season. You’ll gather bits and pieces from those you admire and pin them on the “mood board” of your psyche titled “Who I Want to Be Next.” It’s an attitude, a place to invest your stellar work ethic and some guidelines for your social life, too.

On the hunt for: fulfilling selfexpression. You’ve tried things that worked and more that didn’t, but you still haven’t quite found what you’re looking for. Just know your emotion and creativity are never wasted. Each new endeavour shows you something different about yourself. On the hunt for: closeness you can feel. Because even though you may be well aware of your various bonds, you don’t always feel them in the way you want to. Being openhearted and willing to share yourself, even the vulnerable parts, is a courage that attracts just what you need.

On the hunt for: an investment worthy of you. You can see how you’ve settled in some way. You didn’t know what was possible. There are opportunities you will only know by seeing more of the world, meeting more people and asking questions. It’s a little scary but let that be part of the fun. On the hunt for: a break from forbearance. There is grief you’ve incorporated into loving. Much of the time life occupies you, but when busyness stops, there’s the grief, center stage. You welcome that love continues. If you were caught in a dizzying distraction – could you welcome that, too? On the hunt for: new signatures. The clothes, scents, phrases and gestures that once felt “so you” are ready for an update. Experiment with a new way of communicating. You’ll stumble onto something that feels even more like you than the old trademarks did.

On the hunt for: your own time. You keep appointments involving other people because someone is waiting for you. It’s harder to keep agreements with yourself, but your private plans deserve the same status. Protect the hours with no purpose beyond whatever you feel like doing. On the hunt for: the bygone endeavour or relationship. You’ll hear a song from another chapter of life or drive past the exit you used to take. Maybe this is about the version of you that’s still back there. Have you outgrown it, or have you simply been busy with other things? On the hunt for: an assertiveness that suits you. You can skip the power poses. Find your own way of taking up room, stating what you want and directing the action. You’ll know you’ve found it when people respond how you hoped they would, and you still sound like yourself.

More than just movement at Canberra’s Youth Dance Festival

F

by VINCENT SAMARAS

or many young people, dance is much more than learning the moves and performing on stage. It’s a chance to express themselves, build confidence and make lasting friendships. Those benefits will be on full display when more than 700 students from 27 schools across Canberra and the surrounding region take part in Ausdance ACT’s Youth Dance Festival (YDF) from 27 to 29 October. Now in its fifth decade, the festival has become a much-loved fixture on Canberra’s arts calendar, giving students the opportunity to showcase their creativity in a professional theatre environment. This year’s theme, The Metaverse, invites young performers to explore the increasingly blurred boundaries between the physical and digital worlds. While technology and social media will help shape this year’s performances, the festival is also about getting young people moving, working together and having fun.

canberradaily.com.au

Creative Director Dr Cathy Adamek says the event gives young people a taste of professional theatre while encouraging creativity and collaboration. “Dance is an incredible way of being able to match physical exercise with personal and collective expression,” Cathy says. “That’s something we want everybody to be able to access and everybody to be able to participate in.” YDF welcomes students of all abilities and experience levels, with the focus on creating something together rather than achieving technical perfection. Cathy believes audiences increasingly want to see authentic performances that reflect the diversity of the community. “People don’t want to see sort of airbrush perfection. They want to see real people being represented on stage and screen,” she says. Beyond the physical benefits, Cathy says dance teaches young people valuable skills they can carry into other parts of their lives.

Students are responsible for developing choreography, interpreting the theme and contributing ideas about costumes and lighting, with support from their teachers and professional mentors. “That ability to collaborate, negotiate, problem solve ... to me, that’s almost like a gold standard for learning.” Cathy says getting young people moving and spending time together has become even more important since COVID-19, when many became used to staying home and spending more time online. That connection with the online world is also at the heart of this year’s Metaverse theme, which asks students to think about how technology shapes their lives, both positively and negatively. And with each school bringing its own interpretation of the theme to the stage, Cathy says audiences can expect to see some exceptionally personal and creative performances. “It’s incredibly moving because what it does is it allows young people to kind of express their authentic selves, and that’s because it’s co-creative,” she says. “We’re not sitting there dictating the choreography. We’re not dictating really anything other than this theme that we encourage them to work through.” For Cathy, the friendships and memories created through the festival can be just as important as the performances themselves. She hopes the experience inspires students to pursue careers in theatre, as others have done before them, whether on stage or behind the scenes. But she wants them to experience the special connection that comes from creating something together and sharing it with an audience. “There’s just nothing that can compete with that feeling of sharing what you’ve made with an audience,” she says. “And I think that kind of electricity is something that you know is so special.” Ausdance ACT’s Youth Dance Festival runs from 27 to 29 October at The Playhouse, Canberra Theatre Centre. All proceeds go to the volunteerrun Street Cat Alliance and President Vanessa Parton said the coffee cart was a big hit. “We’ve only had it operational one day and it was amazing; everyone loved it,” Vanessa said. “You can actually just sit and have a coffee and enjoy the space and watch the kittens play, but it’s not buying time per se to spend time with cats like you do in a kitten cafe.” Felines and frothy cappuccinos sound fun, but there’s a serious side to this self-funded venture: homeless cats need forever homes. Tell Me Something True by Michael Robotham

Letterwing, $34.99 Michael Robotham’s first Australian-based crime novel, Tell Me Something True, is a powerful story about family and community and the enduring impact of a crime. When Arlo Hackett returns to his small rural hometown after twelve years in prison, he is not expecting to be welcomed back. His brother was charged with a terrible crime, and Arlo was found guilty by association. His return reopens old wounds and forces Arlo to confront what really happened all those years ago. Beautifully written, Tell Me Something True is a compelling novel that will stick with you long after you finish it.

Please Enjoy Your Stay by Tara Goedjen Macmillan, $34.99 Tara Goedjen’s debut adult novel, Please Enjoy Your Stay, also deals with an old crime that continues to reverberate down the years. When they were teenagers, Mia’s beloved cousin was murdered during their stay at an infamous castle in the Austrian Alps. As the only witness, Mia’s testimony put the killer behind bars. Now, a decade later, the murderer is appealing his conviction, and a popular true crime podcast starts covering the case. The podcaster also resurfaces old accusations that Mia’s aunt, a controversial writer, was involved in the murder. In order to clear her aunt, Mia returns undercover to Austria and the castle. An enjoyable mystery.

Penitent by A. W. Hammond Echo, $34.99 A. W. Hammond tackles a range of issues around morality and sacred duty in his latest novel, Penitent. Instead, he decides to take justice into his own hands and track the killer down. The myths and realities of being an only child with C

W

R

DR VIVIENNE LEWIS

CO

NTRIBU

TO

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Spoiled. Selfish. Lonely. For decades, these have been some of the stereotypes attached to only children. Yet research tells a very different story. Like children from any family structure, only children can thrive when they grow up feeling loved, supported, and connected. The number of children in a family is often far less important than the relationships within it. Being an only child is simply one way of growing up. Like any family structure, it comes with both advantages and challenges. What matters most is not the number of siblings in a household, but the quality of the relationships and environment in which a child is raised. One of the most common misconceptions is that only children are lonely. While some may wish

for a sibling at times, many only children develop rich friendships, strong relationships with cousins, and close connections with adults. In fact, being comfortable spending time alone can become a real strength. Learning how to entertain yourself, think independently, and enjoy your own company are valuable life skills. Only children often receive more one-on-one attention from their parents. This can provide opportunities for conversation, learning, and emotional support. Parents may have more time and resources to devote to a single child, and children can benefit from this attention. However, it can also mean that expectations feel high. Some only children report feeling pressure to achieve or feeling responsible for meeting their parents’ hopes and dreams. Research has consistently found that only children are no more likely to be selfish or maladjusted than children with siblings. In fact, many studies show little difference between only children and those from larger families when it comes to personality, emotional wellbeing, or social skills. The old stereotypes simply don’t hold up when examined scientifically.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD YOUR TEETH PROFESIONALLY CLEANED?

Of course, siblings can teach important lessons. They provide daily opportunities to negotiate, compromise, share, and resolve conflict. Only children may need to learn some of these skills in different settings, such as school, sport, work, or friendships. The good news is that children are remarkably adaptable and can learn social skills in many environments. As only children become adults, they often describe having particularly close relationships with their parents. There can also be unique challenges later in life. As adults, only children may find themselves carrying much of the responsibility for ageing parents without siblings to share the practical and emotional load. This can feel overwhelming at times and highlights the importance of building strong support networks. Perhaps the most important message is that there is no perfect family structure. Some children thrive in large, noisy households. Others flourish in smaller families. What children need most is love, security, guidance, and a sense of belonging.

Where Canberrans find connection with others in an increasingly isolated world by BERNIE RYAN New data from Beyond Blue’s Australia’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Check 2024 reveals a decline in Australians’ sense of community – a shift that is associated with rising rates of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Only 33% of respondents rated their sense of being part of a community as excellent or very good – down from 37% in 2022. Meanwhile, more people now rate their sense of community as poor or fair (30% in 2024, up from 28% in 2022). Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman AO said that while the way Australians

talk about and seek support for mental health has improved over time, one thing has remained unchanged: community plays a major role in shaping our mental health. “It’s in our communities where we develop the social networks that help us all navigate hard times, Ms Harman said. “It’s in our communities where we establish our identities and experience belonging.” The impact of the erosion of the social fabric which once strengthened us is tangible and observable. Lifeline Canberra recently accepted its 1 millionth call since 1971, with a 60%

increase in calls to the service, compared to the previous financial year. Gemma Cromwell, an interior designer from Belconnen, said it’s so important to ‘put ourselves out there’ to create meaningful relationships and build a support network. “You can’t just rely on family members or your partner to provide your support network,” she said. Ms Cromwell stresses that there are numerous opportunities to meet people who are also seeking to do the same thing. Those she has used herself include the Meetup app, Facebook groups, walking and hiking groups, and mentor walks. A group that Ms Cromwell is currently active in is Social Girls of Canberra, where women in Canberra ‘host events and unite ladies from all walks of life to create long lasting connections’. Where else do Canberrans find and nurture meaningful connection? Andrew Kimber from Canberra Jazz Orchestra said that joining the ‘Musicians’ side in the Reclink Community Cup, where a team of local musicians plays a team of media professionals, has made a significant difference in his life. “It creates an outlet and allows us to rally together and become really good friends,” he said. Mr Kimber said that apart from the physical outlet and camaraderie, being involved with Reclink has had a positive impact on his mental health in other ways. “I was always a skinny guy growing up and I think because of that I had never really worn shorts and definitely never wore a singlet top,” he said. “I really don’t give a crap now!” Where else can we find opportunities in Canberra to ‘be’ with others again and start reaping rewards? Thankfully, Canberra provides ample opportunities to do so. The various ways across interests and age groups are too plentiful to list. However, examples can be found on mycommunitydirectory.com.

Gemma Cromwell says that it is important to not only meet people, but follow up to create and nurture friendships. Photo: Bernie Ryan

au, and at community centres and neighbourhood hubs like Woden Community Service, Northside Community Service and the Griffin Centre. There are organisations specifically focused on fostering friendship and connection, such as Running for Resilience, Blokes Walk and Talk, Tough Guy Book Club and Women’s Adventure ACT. For those who would like to help others, there are a multitude of organisations that need support, such as Lifeline, Roundabout Canberra, Fearless Women and more. Alternatively, you can contact Volunteering ACT. There are groups for older Canberrans, sporting opportunities galore, mothers’ groups, disability and carer support groups, and gardening, religious, historical, political and multicultural groups for those ready to expand their support networks. “In a time of rising loneliness, economic pressure, and social fragmentation, it’s important we all continue to play a role in supporting mental health, simply by showing up for each other,” said Ms Harman. This includes showing up for ourselves. Beyond Blue’s free 24/7 Support Service is available on 1300 22 4636 or beyondblue.org.au/getsupport

Buying your first home in Canberra with the 5% Deposit Scheme: A Guide from State Financial Services

Faizal Deva, director and licensed mortgage broker at State Financial Services.

For many aspiring homeowners, saving a 20% deposit can be a major obstacle. The Australian Government 5% Deposit Scheme offers eligible first-home buyers the opportunity to purchase a home with as little as a 5% deposit. At State Financial Services, we help Canberra first-home buyers explore pathways to home ownership

and understand whether the scheme is right for them. What is the Australian Government 5% Deposit Scheme? The scheme helps eligible Australians purchase a home without saving a 20% deposit. The Australian Government guarantees part of the home loan, allowing participating lenders to offer loans with deposits as low as 5%. A key benefit is avoiding lenders mortgage insurance (LMI), which is generally required when borrowing with less than a 20% deposit and can cost thousands of dollars. For example, a $700,000 Canberra property would ordinarily require a $140,000 deposit to avoid LMI. Under the scheme, an eligible buyer may need just $35,000.

real estate

Why the scheme is appealing to Canberra buyers Canberra’s strong employment market, infrastructure and education facilities make it an attractive place to buy, but saving a large deposit can be challenging. The scheme allows eligible buyers to enter the property market sooner and potentially start building equity earlier. Who may be eligible? The scheme supports eligible firsthome buyers and people who have not owned property or land in Australia in the past 10 years. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents, have a minimum 5% deposit and intend to live in the property. Property price caps and participating lender requirements apply. There are no income caps or limits on available places. Professional advice can help clarify eligibility and the application process. Remember the additional costs Buying a home involves more than

a deposit. Additional expenses may include conveyancing fees, building and pest inspections, loan establishment fees, insurance, moving costs and ongoing property expenses. Maintaining a financial buffer can help cover unexpected costs. How State Financial Services can help At State Financial Services, we help clients understand their borrowing capacity, assess scheme eligibility and compare lending options. Our goal is to simplify the home loan process and help buyers make informed decisions. If you’re considering buying your first home in Canberra, the scheme could help you achieve your goals sooner. Contact State Financial Services on 0403 135 300 or contact@ statefinacial.com.au to learn more about the scheme and take the next step towards home ownership.

More than a home, it’s a community Family owned and operated for over 35 years, The Grange retirement village enjoys an unbeatable location in the ACT. Set among the leafy, tree‑lined streets of Deakin and just 300 metres from local shops, the village is also close to medical facilities and essential services. Enjoy a low‑maintenance lifestyle within a warm, welcoming community, supported by a range of quality facilities including an indoor heated pool and spa, library, hairdressing salon, community gardens, onsite dining, and a pet‑friendly environment. 24‑hour onsite emergency support provides added peace of mind. A trained staff member is always onsite to offer calm assistance, basic first aid, and to contact emergency services if required, remaining with you until help arrives.

Our spacious independent living homes feature: • Modern kitchens with stone benchtops and stainless‑steel appliances • Open plan living and dining areas • Most homes opening onto a generous balcony or courtyard • Contemporary bathrooms • Internal laundry • Heating and cooling for year‑round comfort. For future peace of mind, The Grange also offers one‑bedroom serviced apartments located onsite. Should a resident’s needs change, they may choose to move from an independent home into a serviced apartment, where assistance is provided with cleaning, all meals prepared onsite, and heavy laundry such as washing and changing bedding and towels. Personal care is not provided; however residents are welcome to continue with their own preferred personal care provider if required.

“We thought we might be giving something up by moving from a house into an apartment. Instead, we gained an easier lifestyle, more amenity and a wonderful new community.” – Trish & Andrew, Downsizers from Chifley After almost 30 years across Griffith, Hughes and Chifley, Trish and Andrew expected moving to an apartment to take some getting used to. Instead, they felt settled almost immediately. Everyday life is simpler now. Trish walks to the shops, appointments, restaurants and catch-ups with friends, and they hardly use the car. Andrew trains at the on-site gym, and with a bookable office for meetings, working from home still leaves their north-facing apartment feeling like home. And when the family visits, there’s more to share than ever: the pool, the private cinema and the gardens are all right outside their door. For Trish and Andrew, downsizing turned out to be an upgrade.

Now sh wing Street Fighter (M)

In an alternate 1987, Ryu (Andrew Koji) succumbs to his darker impulses during the first World Warrior tournament, driving away his adoptive brother, Ken Masters (Noah Centineo). Six years later, M. Bison (David Dastmalchian) organises a second tournament to draw Ryu out of hiding to take his power. Enter undercover Interpol agent Chun Li (Callina Liang), who gets to work recruiting Ken, Ryu and plenty of other fighters for her cause against M. Bison. Set at the time of the release of the Street Fighter II arcade video game, the movie replicates the look of an early 1990s movie: dark shadows contrasted against bright neon colours on closedoff sets shot with the same anamorphic lenses used on Blade Runner (1982) and the early Godzilla movies, with an 50

accompanying 90s soundtrack. The visuals, fighting styles, poses, costumes and storylines are all incredibly gameand extended-media accurate, leaning heavily into what the fanbase might be looking for. The story and plot, however, are incredibly overstuffed, along with its character list, which gravely affects the movie’s pacing, leaving little room for characterisation, anticipation and payoff. The humour is also very juvenile, especially when contrasted with the grim and genuine animated-manga flashback sequences. While there is a lack of recognisable movie stars to provide a focus, the movie instead features cameos from popular professional fighting video-game streamers, UFC fighters, WWE wrestlers, internet artists and personalities that may connect with younger, modern audiences. Verdict: An assault on the senses that belies its anticipated nostalgic experience. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Palace Cinemas.
