n accident. A frightening diagnosis. A premature birth. No family knows when it may need the care of Canberra’s hospitals. On Thursday 27 August, CAN GIVE DAY will give the community 12 hours to help make local healthcare even better – with every donation doubled. Dinner was being prepared and the children were playing when Archer stepped onto his little brother’s four-wheeled ride-on toy, slipped and landed heavily on his right arm. His parents fashioned a makeshift splint using wooden spoons and tape before rushing him to the Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital. “We were feeling so anxious because Archer was so quiet from the pain and shock, which is not normal for him,” his mum, Liz Biggs, recalls. Dr Sam Scanlan and the Emergency team made Archer comfortable, and kept his parents informed. Archer underwent surgery the following day, with two rods inserted to stabilise his arm. While he waited, staff gave Archer a virtual reality headset and game for distraction. “He loved it,” Liz says. During follow-up visits, nurses used icy poles, colouring activities and bubbles to comfort Archer when he was frightened about having his cast removed. “These little touches make hospital less scary and less boring for children,” Liz says. “Donating to Canberra Hospitals Foundation helps provide

a little spark for children – and their parents – during difficult times.” Sarah Phelan understands how quickly an ordinary day can change. Her daughter Mia, who is neurodivergent, fell from her dirt bike when she fell and suffered a cut beside her eye. In Emergency, the unfamiliar environment and prospect of having her wound cleaned were overwhelming. The doctor worked gently and patiently, while nurses found an iPad to distract Mia as her wound was clean and dressed. Stories like Archer’s and Mia’s are the reason behind CAN GIVE DAY 2026: when life changes out of the blue, Canberra gives. More than medicine Community generosity supports resources outside standard government funding. Canberra Hospitals Foundation raises funds for innovative equipment, local research, therapeutic programs and more comfortable environments across Canberra Health Services – for all areas, across all hospital campuses, from paediatric to palliative care. This year, CHF hopes to raise $200,000 in 12 hours for priority projects across Canberra’s health service. The wish list includes $30,000 for Smileyscope virtual reality headsets in Pathology, Paediatric Outpatients and Day Stay, and the Adolescent Ward – helping more children like Archer feel distracted and comforted during frightening or painful procedures. Funds raised will also support

Research in Emergency at Canberra Hospitals (REACH), helping clinicians turn the questions arising at the bedside into research that can improve Emergency care and the hospital experience that follows. Dr Tom Georgeson says every patient who comes through the Emergency Department deserves the best possible care, delivered quickly, safely and with confidence. As Director of Research, Dr Georgeson is involved in REACH’s work to improve patient experiences, including in the paediatric Emergency Department. What Canberra made possible CAN GIVE DAY 2025 funds are already improving care across homes, cancer services, neonatal care and specialist surgery.
Purpose-designed chairs are helping patients receiving treatment through the Canberra Hospital in the Home program to do so in greater comfort. “When you’re sitting through an infusion for hours, comfort matters. These chairs make it easier for staff to care for us and allow patients to truly relax – I’ve even dozed off in one. I’m grateful to everyone who supported CAN GIVE DAY last year and helped make those long days a little easier,” patient John Busch says. At the Canberra Region Cancer Centre, CAN GIVE DAY funding has transformed the Rapid Assessment Unit into a more welcoming and comfortable environment for cancer patients requiring timely specialist care. “The team are wonderful, so caring canberradaily.com.au

It supports patients to participate in their baby’s care, strengthening bonds and confidence. For Emily, whose daughter Tilly was born prematurely, that support was invaluable. “Being supported to take part in Tilly’s care helped me feel like I was in control of her wellbeing and made me feel like Tilly’s Mum – not just someone watching from the sidelines. I’ll give you shelter: Homelessness and housing in the ACT
with NICOLE LAWDER
FORMER ACT MLA AND DEPUTY OPPOSITION LEADER
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm” is a famous opening line from Bob Dylan’s “Shelter from the Storm” (1975). It feels especially pointed during Canberra’s cold winter months, when it is even more disturbing than usual to think of people sleeping rough in our city. Early August marked Homelessness

Awareness Week, although awareness sounds like a modest ambition when what’s really needed is action. The week highlights the impacts of homelessness and pushes for better housing and support solutions. We also just had Census night, which will eventually provide us with a clearer picture of homelessness in Canberra. In a city as ostensibly affluent as Canberra, it is confronting that homelessness persists, driven by anything from domestic and family violence to mental illness to financial pressures and much else besides. The flip side of homelessness is housing, paired with wraparound services. Canberra is fortunate to have
many wonderful homelessness services (a shoutout here to the Early Morning Centre, where I am proud to be an Ambassador). Which is why it was so disappointing to learn recently about the high vacancy rate in our public housing stock. Currently, 588 public housing dwellings sit empty, while more than 3,000 people languish on the public housing waiting list. I recently spoke with Independent MLA Thomas Emerson about this issue. He’s been vocal on it, together with a group of big-hearted locals who have raised the idea of community assistance to get vacant public housing properties ready for occupation, as he has been speaking about it and raised, with a group of wonderful locals, the possibility of community assistance to get some vacant public housing properties ready for occupation under a proposal to renovate (to start with) 20 homes by Christmas. Well done to real estate agent Jonny Warren, who has himself experienced homelessness, ACT Chair of Housing for All Australians (and former ACT Australian of the Year) Jo Farrell and
other big-hearted locals behind this idea. I love the initiative – although it troubles me that the community should have to step in to help the government fulfil its own basic obligations. This is a government that seems to find money readily enough for its favoured pet projects, yet apparently can’t get hundreds of vacant public housing properties fit for habitation. The ACT Government is the landlord of these homes and carries an ongoing duty to keep them liveable, both while tenants are in residence and after they leave. Something is clearly badly wrong. Is it a lack of priority? Poor process? Under-resourcing within the housing directorate? Probably only insiders know for certain. What we do know is that some people wait years on the public housing waitlist. Surely it’s time the government said to these vulnerable Canberrans, in the words of Bob Dylan, “I’ll give you shelter.” You can listen to my full conversation with Thomas Emerson, Member for Kurrajong in the ACT Legislative Assembly on the Bite-sized politics podcast on Spotify.

I vividly recall two incidents close to home involving sportswomen being hurt by men playing against them. One involved my eldest granddaughter Zoe, then about 17 or 18, playing in a mixed futsal comp in Wollongong, and a young male player in the opposing team being very aggressive (he should have been sent off before) and breaking her left foot. It took a year to heal and, thank God, she is now OK. The other incident involved me. I was playing at the then Bruce Stadium in an invitation team involving me, then Chief Minister Kate Carnell, the late Jim Murphy, Mal Meninga, Cosmos Chief, the late, great Steve Doszpot MLA, and several Cosmos players against the Australian national women’s soccer team, the Matildas. I vividly recall a small Matildas player running into me. She bounced off with a bloody nose, and I recall just being able to catch her fall before she hit the ground and lay her gently onto the turf. It was an accident, but I was a big rugby forward twice her size, and she was a star female athlete. Luckily, she was not permanently hurt. Imagine my horror to see news of Freya Golding, a big unit, playing in the Adelaide Footy League women’s community competition. The footage showed scenes where Freya had bumped female players to the ground and hurt one of them
in the process. The AFL, being super woke and politically correct, had ruled Freya could play despite protests from the other clubs. Freya had been an average player in the local men’s comp before that. I can’t quite fathom why a biological man would want to play in a female comp, even if he identifies as a woman. AFL experts tell me a women’s AFL team would struggle against a good under-13 boys’ side. Once puberty hits, boys become stronger than girls. Men are physically different and stronger than women. That’s just a fact which no amount of DEI nonsense can alter. I think it’s delusional and selfish in the extreme for a biological man to insist on playing in a women’s team. Even if they have had a sex change, they are still built like a man. We take inclusion too far. To start with, very few men identify as women. As one of the longestserving ACT Sports Ministers, I have always been supportive of all people playing sport, especially women and girls. But a duty of care is owed to all participants. In the South Australian case in question, the other teams in the comp are threatening to forfeit when they play the club with this person in the team. That is not fair on anyone, and it should not have had to come to this. The AFL needs to get a grip on itself and ban this person from playing in the women’s competition.

Canberra nurse tackles Sydney Marathon for Parkinson’s research by NICHOLAS FULLER
Hannah Lindsay is running to raise funds for research into Parkinson’s.
Two years ago, Canberra nurse Hannah Lindsay started running; later this month, she will take part in the gruelling Sydney Marathon, a 42-kilometre challenge, to raise money for research into Parkinson’s disease – a condition that her father and two uncles all have. Hannah is raising $2,220 for Shake It Up Australia, which funds research aimed at developing better treatments and ultimately finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The Sydney Marathon will be her third fundraising race for the foundation. “Parkinson’s isn’t talked about enough; it’s taken someone close to me being diagnosed to motivate me to do it,” Ms Lindsay said. “But I

wish it wasn’t that way. I don’t want people to wait until it’s something that’s personally impacting them. It’d be nice if we could be proactive and fund research. There are treatments available to slow symptoms – but it doesn’t stop forever. I don’t think anyone likes something being out there that doesn’t have a cure.” Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world. It involves the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in a part of the brain that controls movement. Although many people think it involves shakes and tremors, the condition can manifest without them. Symptoms can include slow movement, stiffness, and balance problems. It affects cognition, mobility, speech, swallowing, digestion, mood, sleep, and all five senses. No two people experience Parkinson’s the same way. Ten to 20 per cent of all people with Parkinson’s experience symptoms before they turn 50. Ms Lindsay’s father, David, aged 70, was diagnosed three years ago. He is one of nine siblings, and three of the brothers have Parkinson’s. He had always been fit and healthconscious, and remains active: he still runs and cycles; can do push-ups and pull-ups; and enjoys making woodwork and metalwork pieces for the garden. “He’s still trying his best to keep active,” Ms Lindsay said. “He’s doing a good job, and he just has to do things a little bit slower now.” Parkinson’s has affected his posture and mobility, and he has to consciously pick up his feet to reduce the risk of falling while running. Years before his diagnosis, Mr Lindsay lost his sense of smell – a symptom the Lindsays did not associate with Parkinson’s. “Had we known that could potentially be happening, perhaps he would have had his diagnosis sooner,” Ms Lindsay said. Ms Lindsay’s connection to Parkinson’s is also professional. While studying nursing at the
University of Canberra, she received the $1,500 Alan Richardson Scholarship, awarded to a student interested in the condition. During medical and aged-care placements, she met patients with Parkinson’s; she says her father’s diagnosis gave her a new understanding of what patients could be experiencing. “Having awareness helps nurses to provide better care.” The Sydney Marathon will be held on Sunday 30 August. Runners cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge, go through Centennial Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and finish at the Sydney Opera House. It will be Ms Lindsay’s first full marathon, and she says she’s feeling both excited and daunted. “If you ask my parents, they’ll say I never enjoyed running,” Ms Lindsay said. A friend persuaded her to join a park run in 2024. She began enjoying small improvements: five kilometres, then seven, 10… Now, in her day job as a graduate nurse doing shift work, she spends much of the working day on her feet. She runs once or twice during the week; completes a long run on Saturday; then plays hockey on Sunday. “I ran a half marathon this weekend just past; that was a really big deal to me a few months ago,” Ms Lindsay said. “To see where I am now and just running it casually is a bit mind-blowing to me.” Ms Lindsay expects the final kilometres of the marathon to be difficult, but says having her parents there to watch would help. “Doing something genuinely outside my comfort zone gives people something tangible to get behind,” Ms Lindsay said. “I’m not just asking people to donate; I’m taking on a pretty big challenge myself.” Support Hannah Lindsay’s fundraising here: sm26.grassrootz. com/shakeitup/hannah-lindsay For more information, or to donate, visit: shakeitup.org. au/hannah/

Encore and the secret behind Canberra’s big music success by BERNIE RYAN Canberra punches above its weight where producing award-winning artists is concerned, with nine ARIA wins from artists hailing from Canberra in the last five years alone. Is there something about Canberra, despite being considered a small regional destination, that helps our emerging artists defy the odds? There must be, as bands like Hands Like Houses, Genesis Owusu, SAFIA, Peking DUK, Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers and more continue to leave their Canberran footprints all over the world. Recently, I settled into a front row seat at Smith’s Alternative in Alinga Street for

a Friday night set. I had been invited by someone’s Mum in an email championing the passion, courage and resilience of her 18-year-old son Jono, who lost his dad almost two years ago, and the collective talent of him and his childhood friends Ryder, Gordon and Riley. Their band, Encore, were set to perform their third ever gig at Smith’s. To achieve success in the music industry in Australia, or anywhere, is no small feat. You need at least a few things working for you from the get-go. Musicians need a passion for their craft, a commitment to hard work, good music, places to perform, an audience,

and a way to let others know about it. Canberra Weekly is happy to do our bit on that last front. But what is becoming evident is that long-term friendships and belonging to a community committed to lifting you up are also intangible assets. Jono Nicholas (guitar and vocals), Ryder Darling (guitar and vocals), Gordon Lange (bass) and Riley Element (drums) have been friends for 12 years. Jono, Ryder and Gordon live on the same street in Queanbeyan. “We all met in Kindergarten,” says Jono. The band were emphatic in their unanimous response that being friends is a huge advantage to their music. On performing at Smith’s, the band says they are “eternally grateful” for the support. “I think Smith’s is important for us … it’s helped us build good relationships with the community in Canberra as an entry way into the music scene,” says Jono. Smith’s co-owner Nigel McRae is intentional in his choice to give new bands a space to perform. “If you’re going to be a live band you’ve got to have practice, live rehearsal in front of an audience and somewhere to get over your nerves and learn all the other stuff about being a musician besides just writing and playing songs,” he says. On top of the support of venues like Smith’s and the Canberra
community, the evidence for my hunch on the extra power of friendships is compelling. The members of Teen Jesus (Anna Ryan, Scarlett McKahey, Jaida Stephenson and Neve van Boxsel) are childhood friends. Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles from Peking Duk were childhood friends, as well as all three members of SAFIA (Ben Woolner, Michael Bell and Harry Sayers). The core members of Hands Like Houses were also close with Trenton Woodley and Joel Tyrrell, best friends since they were seven years old. ARIA award-winning Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have just taken off on yet another international tour of the UK and Europe. At one of their performances with Pearl Jam late in 2024, Eddie Vedder interrupted their set with a prepared speech in which he said, “This is proof that great friends make great music.” Jono, Ryder, Gordon and Riley, like other bands, will have their work cut out for them, but they have their talent, friendships, families and the unique brand of Canberra support that seems to be a recipe for success. I know this for a fact. A little over ten years ago, I sat and watched Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers play their first gig at Smith’s. And none of their rightly proud mums had to ask me to come and watch them. I was one. canberradaily.com.au

We bought a train by GEORGIA CURRY Trainspotting is one thing (watching trains at railway stations and writing down their serial numbers), but buying an actual train is quite another. Watson resident Simon Mitchell is an avid train enthusiast, but perhaps “fanatic” is a better word. “Who else buys a bloody Southern Aurora and restores 11 of the carriages to operation and runs rail tours?” Simon laughed. “Sprung, I’m a train nerd. Dad is the one that gave me the train spotting disease – it’s a disease like madness.” There’s a perfectly sane reason why Simon and Danielle bought a train. When the Canberra Railway Museum went into liquidation in 2016, two-thirds of its historic
assets were auctioned off. “We really wanted the Southern Aurora to be preserved,” Simon said. “They sold off things that were no longer economical to run, particularly the air-conditioned sleeping trains. “It’s very hard for a rail preservation society to make a go of that and so the carriages were destined to be turned into farm sheds.” Simon and Danielle tried to save as many carriages as possible (purchased for between $2,000 and $85,000 each) and started up a business to use the train as it was intended. “But that was a stupid thing for two people to do,” Simon said. “Absolutely stupid. We restored 11 back to operating condition and ran 29 tours in regional NSW over

five years, but we really struggled to promote the tours with the resources we had.” The last tour was in 2024 when Simon and Danielle had to give it away, selling it to Journey Beyond Rail, which runs The Ghan and Indian-Pacific. “That’s now part of their portfolio and to our great pleasure, they’ve continued to run and improve on our tours that we designed,” Simon said. If you think selling a 328-metre train would leave a gaping hole in Simon’s life, think again. He also owns a commercial bus and a commercial ferry. To be precise: a 1954 flexible Clipper bus called “Scarlet Rose” and a 40-foot Sydney ferry built in 1916. There’s another perfectly sane reason why. “The bus is part of a fleet in Katoomba and I can grab her if she doesn’t have a booking,” Simon said. “Our current plan is to have her in Canberra in November to take Canberra City Big Band to Captains Flat for the centenary of the village hall.” You see, when Simon’s not chasing trains, he’s an accomplished trombone player and president of Canberra City Band. As for Simon’s 110-year-old ferry, it lives at Batemans Bay. “I’ve been restoring her and maintaining her for the last 10 years,” Simon said. “She’s a small ferry and pretty typical of the turn of the century,
she’s an absolute classic.” The ferry sat high-and-dry, hidden in suburban Batemans Bay, for about eight years and then on Clyde River for another nine years. “She spent 17 years ashore and then we got her back in the water in 2014 and steamed her up to Sydney for her centenary and she’s been on the Clyde River ever since.” As for Simon’s rail obsession, he still has a O-Gauge railway model at home, a couple of locomotive lamps, and a builder’s plate from the Southern Aurora. He even built an 11-metre-long model of the Bradford (Exchange) Station, UK. “I’ve got to say that with chasing trains, it’s a lot easier to buy a ticket and go on the train and enjoy it,” Simon said. “I don’t miss the stress of running a working train – or the derailments.” Next on Simon’s train-spotting list is locomotive 3801, which rolls into Canberra Railway Station 5-6 September. It’s high on his watch list because it hasn’t visited Canberra since 1988, when it created history as the only steam locomotive to visit every mainland state and territory of Australia. “I’m pretty sure it’s Henry from Thomas the Tank Engine, the big green one,” he said. You’re never out of dreams, but there are times this week when they will seem inaccessibly tucked away in the drawers of your mind. It’s for the best. Your focus will be on the present. All your imagined futures and goals will be there waiting for you after you finish the business at hand.

This week features stellar opportunities and overrated ones, too. The best offers may come from humble sources. It’s more impor-tant to have the terms you want than it is to be unrewarded by powerful or glamorous entities. You don’t need to be seen a certain way to know your value. No matter how well you know someone, you can still look at them as though you’re seeing them for the first time. Because you challenge yourself to. Because you’re changing, they are, too, and you care to track the ways. Your curiosity keeps relationships fresh. This week, you’ll often be among people who just can’t predict what you’ll do next. That’s how you like it. You’re a magician, adept at directing attention in such a way to keep them mesmerised while doing what you need to do to create a little magic. You aim to delight and so you will. In movies, life’s turning points come with a soundtrack. Real life gives little warning, unless you’re the type to notice significant details. You are. Somebody reaches for the salt, starts the car, says something ordinary, and you feel it. The trajectory changes. You’ll love where it’s going.
It is said that what is not freely given is not worth having. But some people simply refuse to give freely or fairly, and waiting for just distribution gets you nowhere. Neither does pretending you don’t care or living with growing discomfort. Confront greed and stealth. Take what is justly yours. When your reaction seems out of kilter to what caused it, you’re likely reacting to history instead of the present – blaming a new person for what the old person did. How perfectly normal and human, even if unhelpful. This week awakens self-awareness that lets you to let go of the past. Skip the existential angst this week and, instead, focus on the next conversation, the next decision, the next step. The future will sort itself through a long chain of small and sound decisions. Make the next choice in a way you’ll respect tomorrow. Then make the next one the same way. When it feels like people are working at cross-purposes to your own, consider that they may just happen to be travelling the same road, coming from the opposite direction. It doesn’t mean you’re at an impasse. A small adjustment in timing or position lets everyone keep moving. There are many ways to resolve problems. Whether you work from the inside out by changing your thinking, or from the outside in by changing your habits, you’ll find your way through. Likely the most effective method will be a mix of both these styles. The only way to go wrong is not to go at all. The fictional story ends with a happy-ever-after. The real relationship will keep going past the happy ending and into wonderful days and ordinary ones – grocery runs, paying bills and rough patches. Keeping reasonable expectations of relationships is your ticket to contentment.

Nicholls Anzani Family Lawyers founders Timothy Nicholls and Ana Anzani.
Expertise and empathy at Nicholls Anzani Family Lawyers Separation and family disputes can bring some of the most difficult and uncertain periods in a person’s life. Having clear advice and the right support can make navigating that process a little less daunting. For Nicholls Anzani Family Lawyers, combining legal expertise with an understanding of each client’s individual circumstances is central to its approach. The specialist family law firm was established by founding partners Timothy Nicholls and Ana Anzani, who brought together their experience with the shared goal of achieving strong outcomes for families. From straightforward matters to complex disputes, the firm provides advice across a broad range of family law issues, including separation and divorce, parenting and children’s arrangements, property and financial settlements, international family law matters, family violence and restraining orders, financial agreements, surrogacy and adoption. While based in Canberra, the firm’s experience is sought by clients across Australia, 28

with the team specialising in the resolution of complex family law matters. Timothy is an Accredited Specialist in Family Law and was one of the highest-performing candidates in the 2021 cohort undertaking Specialist Accreditation in Family Law. One of his assessment pieces was subsequently selected for use in an Assessment Sample Kit for future candidates, demonstrating the standard required to achieve specialist accreditation. Both Timothy and Ana have also been recognised as ‘Leading’ Family Lawyers in Doyle’s Guide to the Australian Legal Market. Legal expertise, however, is only one part of supporting someone through a family law matter. Nicholls Anzani Family Lawyers understands that every family is different and takes the time to learn about each client’s circumstances before providing tailored advice about the way forward. Separation can be an incredibly stressful experience, and the firm aims to ensure clients understand the process, their options and the steps required to reach a positive and timely resolution.
Clients are supported by a team of lawyers and administrative staff, with an emphasis on attention to detail and proactive, practical and commercial advice. The team combines strong advocacy with empathy and understanding, particularly when dealing with highly personal or emotionally challenging circumstances. For people considering contacting a family lawyer for the first time, it is important to remember that seeking advice does not necessarily mean preparing for a courtroom battle. There are many circumstances in which someone may benefit from family law advice, and obtaining that advice early can provide greater clarity about their position and the options available to them. While clients need to be prepared for the possibility that a matter could ultimately require court proceedings, there can be different pathways towards resolution. The role of a family lawyer is to help identify the approach best suited to the individual circumstances of the client and their family. That process begins with understanding what has brought the client through the door. Relationships of any kind can be complicated, and people contacting a family lawyer are often doing so at a particularly challenging point in their lives. Timothy and Ana place an emphasis on discretion and sensitivity from the first conversation and throughout the matter. Once the team understands a client’s circumstances, it can develop a strategy and provide ongoing advice and support towards resolution. This individual approach is particularly important in complex family law matters, where there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. Nicholls Anzani Family Lawyers aims to combine its experience and expertise with tailored strategies designed around the needs and priorities of each client. For Timothy and Ana, the rewarding part of family law is helping people navigate difficult circumstances and find a way forward. by GEORGIA CURRY When you think of public servants, you probably don’t picture being killed by a desk or stealing stationery, but the Dept of Rock is a whole other beast. This is the after-hours version of the public service, where staid public servants step out from their cubicles and rage against the machine, musically speaking. Dept of Rock is a battle of the bands competition for Federal and ACT public servants – folk, ska, blues, punk, pop, rock, whatever – and entries are now open. If you need inspiration, take a look at last year’s winners, heavy metal band Machinery of Government (pictured). Underneath the make-up, piercings and tatts, are servants to the public. These musos spend their days working at various portfolios including the Australian Tax Office, Department of Home Affairs, and
Australian Bureau of Statistics. By night, however, these Dept of Rock champions plug in their amps and cover Judas Priest’s “Breaking the Law”, re-naming it “Taking It All”, about raiding the stationery cupboard. Please note: they did not actually steal from the stationery cupboard. Their energy-packed set included the lead singer showering the ecstatic crowd with post-it notes and pens. Need more inspiration? They also covered Motorhead’s “Killed by Death”, changing it to “Killed by Desk” (a dark homage to the office). Dept of Rock is open to all genres and all abilities – even this desk-bound journalist had a go as a lapsed public servant (bands need a majority of public servants, so I scraped in). Along with a couple of ex-public servants from the Department of Industry and Department of Veterans Affairs, we rocked out to AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, modified to “Dirty Deeds in Scope Creep” (that uncontrolled

Book talk
This week, Michael Popple highlights three outstanding new fantasy fiction releases. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com
A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett
The Deep and the Drowned by Ian Green
Hodderscape, $34.99 The Empire of Khanum finds itself on the brink of civil war following a brutal murder. Called in to investigate, unconventional detective Ana Dolabra and her assistant Dinios Kol attempt to find the truth behind the death. However, there is far more to this killing than meets the eye, as the duo uncover a conspiracy using a terrifying weapon. Robert Jackson Bennett continues to impress with his latest novel. Featuring an utterly addictive mixture of unique fantasy elements and a truly brilliant murder mystery, A Trade of Blood is just incredible, and is one of the best novels of 2026.
Head of Zeus, $15.99 In a world of sprawling seas haunted by gods and monsters, only the bold can seek riches and glory, and none are bolder than Captain Killian Heroneye. However, after running up too many debts, Killian is reluctantly forced to sail to the most dangerous of waters. With treachery and death all around, can Killian keep his ship afloat, especially when confronted with the sins of his past? The Deep and the Drowned is an exciting and ambitious dark fantasy novel filled with nautical adventure. An excellent and awesome book that serves as a great start to a compelling new series.
He Who Fights with Monsters: Outworlder by Travis Deverell Michael Joseph, $34.99 When Australian local Jason is summoned to an alternate dimension, things go bad quickly. Trapped in a world of magic and monsters, Jason needs to find a way to survive and preferably find some pants. The good news is that he has magic; the bad news is that his powers are evil and likely to get him into trouble. Fresh from the internet comes the paperback release of the first volume of the beloved He Who Fights with Monsters series. Written by Australian author Travis Deverell, better known as Shirtaloon, this book is an expansive LitRPG adventure guaranteed to keep you continuously entertained.

Now sh wing The End of Oak Street (M)
In a suburban cul-de-sac on Oak Street in 1982, a neighbourhood celebrates its annual ‘block party’. Aspiring novelist Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway) argues with her husband Greg (Ewan McGregor), while their children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) look on. During a storm, an eerie white light engulfs the neighbourhood, slowly giving rise to ancient fauna and flora. Produced by J.J. Abrams, the movie borrows heavily from Steven Spielberg’s visual signatures, such as a high-concept with split-diopter widescreen shots, all dripping with nostalgia from a nuclear family’s point of view. Set in Spielberg’s blockbuster heyday of the 80s, the movie looks to TV series of the ‘60s/‘70s, which poked fun at
38

the concept of the nuclear family by juxtaposing it against prehistoric settings like The Flintstones (1960-66), Gilligan’s Island (1965-67) and The Land of the Lost (1974-76). Dropping the humour, the movie is tonally inconsistent. Despite the family setting and theme, the movie has surprisingly creepy dinos and shocking sudden violence that is a step beyond what is expected from a Jurassic Park (1993-2025) movie. The movie’s creature design is, however, distinctive, keeping up with current understanding of what dinosaurs may have actually looked like while also showing us some never-before-seen ones. While it plays like an ‘80s movie, modern movie checklist boxes are ticked off towards the end, with J.J. Abrams’ penchant for mystery-box, inconsequential cop-outs rendering any potential thematic points moot. Verdict: A toothless, but entertaining nostalgic thrill-ride. How do you know if gambling is becoming a problem?
CO
NTRIBU
TO
with DR VIVIENNE LEWIS
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA
Gambling has been in the news a great deal recently, particularly around the exposure of children and young people to gambling advertising and the normalisation of betting in Australian sport. As a clinical psychologist, what concerns me is how easily gambling can move from something seen as harmless entertainment to something that affects a person’s mental health,
relationships and life. So, when should we worry? Many Australians gamble occasionally. Someone might have a bet on the horses, buy a lottery ticket, play the pokies when they’re out with friends or bet on their favourite sporting team. This doesn’t necessarily mean they have a gambling problem. Gambling harm is about the negative consequences gambling can have on the person gambling and those around them. And it isn’t just about losing money. A question I encourage people to ask is: What role is gambling playing in my life? It may be time to become concerned if you’re gambling more often or spending more than you intended, trying to win back money you’ve lost, hiding how much you gamble, borrowing
money to gamble, or thinking about gambling a lot. Another warning sign is when gambling stops being something you occasionally enjoy and becomes something you feel you need to do, perhaps to escape stress, sadness, loneliness or other difficult feelings. I’d also be concerned if gambling is affecting your sleep, mood, work, relationships or finances, or if people who care about you are starting to express concern. What about our children? For children and young people, prevention isn’t simply about saying, “Don’t gamble”. We need to help them understand why gambling carries risks. Talk openly about how gambling works. Gambling companies are businesses designed to make money, and, over time, the odds favour the gambling provider. Adults also need to think about what we model. If every sporting event involves discussions about odds, bets and wins, children can start to see gambling as simply part of
enjoying sport. We can also teach young people to recognise gambling advertising for what it is, advertising designed to encourage people to spend money. If you’re worried about someone Approach them with compassion rather than criticism. Shame rarely helps people change. You might say, “I’m a bit worried about you. How are you going?” Importantly, don’t just ask about the gambling; ask how they’re feeling. Gambling can become a way of coping with anxiety, depression, loneliness, boredom or stress and unfortunately gambling losses and their consequences can then make these difficulties even worse. Encourage the person to speak with their GP, psychologist or a specialist gambling support service. You can also seek support yourself if someone else’s gambling is affecting you. Perhaps the simplest question is: Is gambling adding something enjoyable to my life, or is it starting to take something away?

What winter reveals about your home with C
W
R
MARIA CERNE, INTERIOR DESIGNER CO
NTRIBU
TO
AT STUDIO BLACK INTERIORS, STUDIOBLACK.COM.AU
By August, the novelty of a Canberra winter has well and truly worn off. We know which room catches the last of the afternoon sun, where the cold settles and which spaces the family quietly abandons until spring. I find winter incredibly revealing. It strips a home back to how it truly feels and asks a simple question: does this space support the way you live? Start by noticing the rooms you naturally gravitate towards. Perhaps everyone gathers in one sunny corner of the living room while another, carefully
furnished space sits untouched. The direction a room faces, its connection to the kitchen and even the placement of a favourite chair can shape how often it is used. Materials also take on a different character in winter. Stone, concrete and tile can be striking, but without something warmer to balance them, a room may feel stark during Canberra’s colder months. I love pairing these harder surfaces with the natural warmth of timber, the softness of wool and richly textured fabrics. Window treatments can be transformative. Curtains that fall from ceiling to floor soften the architecture, frame the view and create a greater sense of enclosure. Layering sheer curtains with blinds allows sunlight to filter through during the day while providing privacy and insulation once evening arrives. Lighting becomes especially important at this time of year. LED ceiling lights may illuminate a room, but they rarely create atmosphere on their own. I prefer lighting that feels layered and intentional: a lamp beside a favourite chair, a wall light washing softly over artwork or a warm pool of light across a dining table. Before changing anything, take time to observe your home. Notice where you sit with your morning coffee, which light you switch on first and where you feel most at ease at the end of the day. Just as

importantly, consider the spaces you avoid and why. Not everything winter reveals requires a renovation. Moving a chair into the sunlight, introducing a generous rug or changing a window treatment may be enough to transform how a room feels. These observations can also guide larger decisions. If you are planning a renovation or new home, winter offers a valuable opportunity to define what comfort means to you. A well-designed home should feel beautiful in every season. Sometimes, it is during the coldest months that it speaks to us most clearly.
