Classic Cruise puts fun in the driver’s seat for Camp Quality

H

undreds of classic cars, exotic vehicles and motorcycles will take to Canberra’s roads next weekend, but for the team behind Classic Cruise, the most important people watching will be the kids waving to them.

Returning for its 11th year on Sunday 13 September, the Classic Cruise brings together some of Canberra’s coolest cars, colourful characters and some superheroes to raise money for Camp Quality and support children and families impacted by cancer.

The event began in 2016 when a group of local Camp Quality supporters wanted to create a fundraiser that could involve the wider Canberra community.

GoodLoop CEO Ivan Slavich said the idea grew from the team’s involvement in Camp Quality’s Escapade, a motoring fundraiser.

“We wanted to do a peer-to-peer fundraiser to get everybody in Canberra involved to help raise money for kids impacted by cancer, and we thought a good way of doing it is by doing the Classic Cruise,” Ivan said.

The first Classic Cruise attracted around 40 cars, but OPC IT Principal Brett Norton said the event had grown considerably since then.

“Now we’re on the 11th year. We’re expecting over 400 vehicles,” Brett said.

The action begins at the National Arboretum Canberra from 8am, before the convoy sets off at 10am and travels through Canberra towards Tidbinbilla and the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex.

The vehicles will then return to the Questacon car park for a Show ’n’ Shine featuring food, entertainment and displays. But some of the most excited spectators will be waiting along the route.

Around 60 Camp Quality children and family members will travel by a Murrays bus to the Cotter area, where they will watch and wave as the convoy passes before joining the festivities at Questacon.

“It’s actually turned into an activity for the kids who are impacted by cancer,” Ivan said.

For participant Cathy Norton, seeing firsthand what the organisation’s programs mean to families is what keeps the team motivated.

“When you see in real life where the money goes and the effect that the programs that Camp Quality runs have on the families, just a bit of respite, a bit of relief, putting laughter and fun back into what is a pretty tough time for them, you can’t help but be moved and motivated to want to help them do more,” Cathy said.

Camp Quality supports children facing their own cancer diagnosis, as well as siblings and children whose parents or carers have cancer, through programs including camps, family experiences, hospital support and educational programs.

“They have sibling camps, they have camps for the kids, they have family camps where they can all get away together, and just sort of have some noncancer-focused time together,” Cathy said.

This year, the Classic Cruise is aiming to raise $250,000, with more than $132,000 already raised in the lead-up to the event.

It is a considerable evolution from the first Classic Cruise, and Cathy said the event had become something the community genuinely gets behind.

“We focus all our energy on this, and it’s become quite well known now, which is really lovely because it means everybody gets really behind the fundraising,” she said.

Eleven years on, Classic Cruise has grown from a few dozen cars into a colourful Canberra tradition, all with a serious purpose beneath the fun.

As OPCIT Principal Brett Norton put it, Camp Quality’s motto remains at the heart of it all: “Laughter is the best medicine.”

The Canberra Classic Cruise will take place on Sunday 13 September, with vehicles gathering at the National Arboretum Canberra from 8am before departing at 10am. The cruise will finish at the Questacon car park, where the Show ’n’ Shine, food and family activities will begin from around 11.30am.

Wanted: ball kids

Be a ball kid at the Workday Canberra International Tournament in January 2027.

Pro tennis legends like Rafa and Federer would be nothing without the ball kids who retrieve their wayward serves, and Tennis ACT is recruiting for the upcoming tennis season.

If you’re aged between 10 and 16, you could score the best courtside seat and get up close and personal to elite tennis greats.

Ball kid manager Harrison Frater said that despite the young age of ball kids – mostly aspiring tennis players – they were often more mature than some pro tennis players.

“The kids can be so much more composed than the players are if something’s not going their way,” Harrison said.

“It’s quite the irony that the kids can really handle themselves in a pressure environment, making sure that the balls are getting to the right places and servicing the player at the right times.

“Young tennis players can watch a match unfold and know that players need to keep their calm similar to the ball kids.”

Thanks to Covid, ball kids no longer have to fetch sweaty towels for players, however they occasionally have to remove the odd Bogong moth or grasshopper from the court if necessary.

Above all, ball kids must not be noticed or heard.

“Learning the importance of nonverbal communication is something that kids at that age haven’t quite properly learned in a real-life scenario,” Harrison said.

Concentrating for 45 minutes straight per shift is a big ask for young kids, particularly on a stinking hot day during a high-stress game.

“They stick to the job at hand, but obviously deep down they think how cool it is to be up close and personal with some of the top 200 tennis players in the world,” Harrison said.

There are perks to this volunteer job, such as a designated ball-kids hub to watch movies on beanbags in between shifts, plus a uniform to keep.

Last summer, Tennis ACT had a record 110 ball kids for the Workday Canberra International and they’re hoping for more in January 2027.

As an extra incentive, two Canberra ball kids will be selected to attend the Australian Open in Melbourne (where it’s highly competitive with thousands of ball kid applications).

Several weeks ago saw the historic One Nation (ON) win in a traditional Labor seat in WA (Secret Harbour).

The two-party-preferred vote was 57% to 43%.

The LNP came third, and I’ve seen two different stories as to how their preferences went. One said they went 50/50 to Labor and One Nation. The other version had them largely going to One Nation. Now, as the Green preferences went (as usual) about 90% to the ALP and

the two-party-preferred vote was 57% to ON and 43% to the ALP, I think the latter must be true, which is good for ON in future elections.

Over the last week, I have been told by various ordinary workers in the ACT, tradies, bus drivers and other hands-on workers, that they are very impressed with Pauline Hanson and ON. She goes out of her way to say hello and talk to ordinary workers, always the sign of a good politician. John Howard excelled at it, as did the late, great Bob Hawke and Margaret Thatcher in the UK. I’m not sure about some of her picks. You must do proper vetting of candidates, Pauline, but some recent picks appear to be beauties.

Albo and his colleagues’ attempts to smear ON as racist, dangerous and divisive is so much hogwash. If anything, it is the

current ALP government and their Green allies who are dangerous and divisive. ON are on a roll. For every attack on Pauline by Albo and co, she and ON just go from strength to strength.

My advice to the LNP is to roll with the flow. Your strengths are your track record of sound economic management, defence and security credentials and track record of good government at both federal and state level. And at the end of the day, who cares if, at the next Victorian election (November this year), NSW election (March next year) or federal election (2028), ON gets more votes and seats than you? You are all more or less on the same page and you are all Australian patriots. One Nation will almost certainly throw up a few duds, but also some exceptional candidates who will enhance our

state and federal parliaments and who should prove to be so much better, because of their real-life experience, than the current crop of ALP/Green members.

All right-wing parties, as I have said before, need to complement each other and not attack each other and ensure they get their preferences right. As right-wing action group Advance have put it, you can’t go too far wrong by putting the ALP last in every electorate and go from there. If you do it right, these three ALP governments are there for the taking, although I would be a bit sad to see Chris Minns go, as he is a good premier, and I’d happily settle for the ALP to lose federally and in Victoria and win in NSW. As Meat Loaf said, “Two out of three ain’t bad.”

Sarah describes her OzChild caseworker as one of the family’s ‘cheerleaders’ and biggest supporters.

“OzChild have taken the load when we are tired or navigating the big feelings foster care brings,” she says.

Her advice to prospective carers is to keep an open mind.

“I don’t think anybody becomes a foster carer thinking they have all the answers,” she says. “Just be open-minded, get as much information as you can, and talk to other people who are caring.

“If you can meet the child where they are at and be willing to go outside your comfort zone, the gifts foster care provides will absolutely shine brighter than the hard days.”

For Sarah, fostering ended up being much more than she expected.

“Foster care may not be what you think it’s going to be, in a good way. You think you’re signing up to change a child’s life...but a child will come into your

care and change yours.”

Book Doof: A rave for readers

by GEORGIA CURRY You may have heard of “bush doofs” (outdoor rave parties), but what about “Book Doof”, a rave for readers without the dancing?

It’s coming to Canberra for the first time and judging by the viral movement in Melbourne (hundreds turned out at Victorian State Library and another is planned for Federation Square), books and beats are big.

It’s like a rave – dim lighting, heavy bass and a community centred around shared energy – but with a book in hand not a glow-stick.

It seems that Millennials and Gen Z are over digital devices and looking for a low-pressure, zero-obligation way to connect.

Enter 40-year-old Ying Yeung from Downer, who’s bringing the Melbourne phenomenon to Canberra.

“It’s part of the social reading trend that I’m seeing everywhere – there’s Tough Guy Book Club, there’s silent reading, there’s bejewelling (decorating the cover of your books), there’s a lot

going on that is variations of reading,” Ying said.

“I realised there was so much power and potential in books to connect people and with more people than ever feeling lonely, literacy rates going down, there are some really powerful things we can do by reintroducing books and getting together to read.”

Already, Book Doof has the support of the Canberra Writers Festival and some of Canberra’s national institutions have expressed interest in hosting an event.

“It started in Melbourne late last year with a couple of people around a table, and between then and now, it has gone from strength to strength,” Ying said. “[Founder Grant Krupp] has sold out 300-person venues.

“It’s a very rapid rise, everyone wants to be at one, but we’re going to have our own Canberra flavour.”

Canberra’s Book Doof will have a curated reading playlist of ambient electronic dance music; however, live DJs are planned for future events.

Direct from Melbourne, Canberra’s very first “Book Doof” will be launched at Gang Gang Cafe on 20 September.

Canberrans should prepare for ‘very intense’ thunderstorms

by NICHOLAS FULLER Canberra’s storm season began this month, running until the end of April, and the ACT is likely to experience “very intense thunderstorms”, the ACT State Emergency Service warns.

“Launch of the storm season means it’s time to prepare Canberra – and we want you to chat, plan, act,” ACTSES Chief Officer Steve Forbes said.

Storms can strike with little warning, bringing torrential rain, damaging winds, hailstones and lightning that can cause flash flooding, damage buildings, and bring down trees and powerlines.

“Power outages, blocked roads, and loss of phone or internet services can leave you isolated or without access to help,” Dr Marisa Paterson, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, said.

“They can come with no notice, and they can do really big damage to you, your family, and your property and your precious things,” Mr Forbes said.

“So now it’s time to prepare, to think about what a severe storm might do to your place. How will your place hold up in a severe thunderstorm?

“Chat amongst your family; chat amongst your neighbours; chat amongst your workplace. Come up with a plan. How are you going to react when we put out storm warnings? What actions do you need to take around your house?”

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting hot, dry weather and unstable atmospheric conditions.

“Some of the most intense storms in Canberra have happened in our driest years,” Mr Forbes said.

The January 2020 hailstorm, for instance, known as ‘Hailgeddon’, struck while bushfires blazed around the region and caused $600 million in damage. It smashed skylights and dented the roof of the Shine Dome; killed hundreds of flying foxes; and dented 44,500 cars.

ACTSES recommends that people go onto the ESA website and make an emergency plan. They should clear gutters and downpipes, which makes

the house less flammable in a bushfire and stops water flowing back into the house during storms; fix roof leaks; trim trees; secure outdoor furniture and trampolines to the ground; and make sure home and contents insurance is up to date.

Householders should prepare properties before storms, while property owners are responsible for permanent repairs.

“Make sure you’re dealing with those niggling issues around the house,” Mr Forbes said.

“Our SES volunteers are always at the ready to make temporary repairs should you get storm damage. If you do need help from the SES, our fantastic volunteers are always there, ready to help to make temporary safe measures around your house.”

The Bureau of Meteorology is introducing a seven-day storm outlook, which Mr Forbes said would help people plan travel and outdoor activities ahead of potentially severe weather.

ACTSES has nearly 400 volunteers, and plans to recruit more later this year.

The service is also exercising response arrangements with ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service and City Services.

Thankfully, Ella is not forgetting that Canberra is on the music map and will be performing her last show of the tour at Smith’s Alternative on Saturday 10 October.

Those familiar with the pop charts of the late 1990s to early 2000s will remember Ella as the teenager from Violet Town, Victoria, who, along with her older brother Jesse, formed the band Killing Heidi, responsible for the smash hit, “Weir”.

In 2000, when only 17, Ella and Jesse took home four Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards.

Rights Association (APRA) Songwriter of the Year Award.

Twenty-five years later, Ella has returned to her first musical love, country, and has been living and working between Nashville and Melbourne.

“Yes, I’ve gone country – how original,” she says.

“But I actually haven’t really jumped on the bandwagon. I’ve been into it for a long, long time.”

Ella credits her parents as significant creative influences on her.

During her upcoming tour, Ella will feature a collection of deeply raw and confessional personal works from her newest album, Cowboy Man, using her music to lay bare some of her most challenging personal experiences.

The standout track for raw honesty is “When the Shit Went Down”, which Ella describes as an involuntary outpouring of emotion that served a therapeutic purpose after her parents died within two weeks of each other in 2022.

and emotional moments during the show, people don’t need to be afraid of leaving under a cloud of sadness, as there is also much fun to be had.

“While some of the songs will definitely try and make you cry, the least I can do is try and make you laugh on the side,” she said.

On concluding her tour in Canberra, Ella said that she insisted they make it to Canberra.

“So, this is a special one.

“I’m so looking forward to it, and I hope to see you at Smith’s.”

Plans for Tuggeranong ice sports facility cancelled

by NICHOLAS FULLER The ACT Government has abandoned plans for a longawaited new ice sports facility in Tuggeranong.

Weeks after acknowledging the project had taken longer than expected, the government announced on Monday 7 September that it had failed to reach an agreement with the proponents Pelligra Group and Cruachan Investments.

“The ACT Government came to the table ready and willing to make this project a reality, with the funding secured and a strong desire to see it built,” Chris Steel, Minister for Sport and Recreation, said.

“However, it was critical that the Government’s significant investment delivered strong outcomes for the ACT community, and we simply could not reach an agreement that met those requirements.”

ACT Labor pledged to build the facility in 2016, and expected construction to begin by 2020.

In 2019, it selected Pelligra and Cruachan as the preferred delivery partner to build and operate the facility, intended for Greenway, and entered into a non-binding agreement with them in 2022. The government committed more than $16 million – at the time, the biggest commitment by any government to ice sports in Australian history.

But COVID-19, legal and governance documentation, and environmental approvals delayed the project. By 2025, the proponents were raising concerns about the Tuggeranong site and project costs, and proposed it be built elsewhere.

unviable. Submitted in January, it sought more than double the original level of government assistance requested. The government said it carried unacceptable risks and did not represent value for money.

“I understand this news will be deeply disappointing for members of the ice sports community and others who championed this proposal,” Mr Steel said. “We recognise the importance of these facilities, and the Government will continue to engage with stakeholders on the future provision of ice sports in the ACT.” The government said the requirement for an ice-skating rink suitable for national competitions remains at the Phillip ice skating centre site.

Mr Steel said that the $16 million earmarked for the rink would instead be spent on other sport and recreation infrastructure in Tuggeranong.

“I want to assure Tuggeranong residents that this funding is staying local,” Mr Steel said.

ACT sporting clubs can share their infrastructure needs with the government through a survey; the government will consider Tuggeranong clubs’ feedback as a priority.

Labor backbencher Taimus Werner-Gibbings said he was “extremely angry and deeply disappointed” by the announcement. He tabled a petition earlier this year urging the ACT Government and its private development partners to deliver on their commitment.

the ACT Government and would-be developers Cruachan Investments and Pelligra Holdings have ended their partnership,” Mr WernerGibbings said.

“Tuggeranong deserves a venue with a centre of gravity that draws people here. While the Arena would have provided a permanent, state-of-the-art home for the ACT’s ice sports community, it would also have represented economic development and opportunity for Tuggeranong.”

Mr Werner-Gibbings said he would call on the government to urgently commit to delivering sporting infrastructure in Tuggeranong. In his opinion, the program should expand significant drawcard facilities; renew sport infrastructure in high schools and colleges; and upgrade community sporting facilities. This week, he intends to give Mr Steel a preliminary list of short and medium-term options based on conversations with Tuggeranong citizens and sports clubs.

“Tuggeranong is sick of waiting for our fair share,” Mr WernerGibbings said. “The Government must outline its plan; commit to a timeline; and get on with delivering the sports infrastructure our community needs and deserves…

“While this news is a dark day for Tuggeranong, the candle of opportunity is burning. The Tuggeranong Ice Sports Facility proposal in our community may

be finished, but the need for investment in us is not.”

The ACT Ice Sports Federation was profoundly disappointed, but would keep working with government and other potential partners, spokesman Sandi Logan said.

“We’ve worked this long to get so very close to our objective, and we are not going to be silenced – or sullen – about this not-unexpected development,” Mr Logan said.

“Now it’s back to basics: ensure the Phillip Ice Rink continues to operate and improve its participants’ and spectators’ experience, and to the extent Geocon as the lessees have the capacity to maintain their excellent management of what is an ageing facility, we will support them 100 per cent in their operation.

“We will also have discussions with the new Sports Minister about a way forward and the options available to us, because while the elite level of some ice sports in the nation’s capital is catered for through, in the case of ice hockey, the Canberra Brave, the wider community of figure skating, ice dance, broomball, junior, senior and recreational ice hockey, and the new sport of curling about to start, still need a modern, safe and family friendly arena in order to grow and aspire to national and international standards.”

My favourite thing to do is science with Dr V (Dr Vanessa De Kauwe).

She is the founder of the Science Pirates and the class that I do is called Science Alliance after the Star Wars Alliance. Our science class is associated with Inspiring Australia, which promotes science engagement programs.

We have just finished making a well with a pulley system out of wood. First we made a model out of cardboard, then we used power

tools to cut wood and sand it smooth.

We used a drill to make the holes for the axle shaft that goes through the sides. When all the sides were glued together, we fitted the axle shaft through the side pieces and connected a second axle with a rubber band. When the wheel turned, we could wind up a piece of string just like a bucket gets wound up in a well.

Earlier this year we made hologram cages and we could project holograms from our phones into the hologram cage. I took some amazing photos of beetles, butterflies and an elephant. Right now we are learning about earth sciences and the ages of the earth. This is extending from last year when we made fossils and buried them in the garden. Last week we made a volcano and found out how volcanic islands come up from the sea.

Last year we studied cells and looked at them through a magnifying glass. I love this photo of Dr V and my friend Tessa together. Dr V makes us all laugh a lot. She is amazing and makes learning science a lot of fun.

Dr V believes in us and helps us use

power tools properly to make cool things. I think that I learn a lot more when I do the whole thing myself and I have time to think about how everything works. Science Alliance is a lot of fun when the class works together cooperatively.

Co-owner of Smith’s Alternative Nigel McRae wants to share what he has learned to help grow Canberra’s live music scene.

igel McRae is on a mission to improve Canberra, specifically through “the music industry,” he says.

Co-owner of one of Canberra’s favourite live performance venues, Smith’s Alternative, Mr McRae says he was inspired to achieve more for Canberra’s live music scene by the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas.

Despite the relatively small population of Austin, Texas, at 1 million, it has built a massive global reputation.

“Why can’t we do that?” he says.

If anyone has the insight, skills and experience required, Mr McRae, who has been involved for decades as a performer, promoter, gig reviewer and venue operator, is well placed to pull it off.

Despite the worldwide ongoing plight of venues to stay solvent since COVID-19, Smith’s Alternative is still standing, well beyond its ten years of being owned and operated by Mr McRae and his partner Beth Tully.

“We are not only surviving, but … thriving,” he says.

Whilst other venues have sadly come and gone around them, Smith’s has expanded to boast two more venue spaces and has over 10,000 regular patrons on its database.

Whilst many venue owners might be tempted to celebrate and hold their success cards close to their chest, this is not how the folk at Smith’s roll.

Mr McRae feels that what has helped Smith’s can be duplicated for the benefit of all, and it is necessary.

“I’ve got one venue, but I can’t do it on my own,” he says.

“We need more venues … Civic needs to become a place where people want to go.”

To spend time with Nigel McRae in the eclectic, welcoming, cross-genre and ‘all human beings welcome’ space that Smith’s has become is to realise quickly that this generosity of spirit is not an afterthought.

It is key to why and how Smith’s is what it is.

The Smith’s business model is built on a radical rejection of what Mr McRae says is ‘modern, predatory capitalism’ in favour of ethics, subsequent community trust, and catering to diverse performance genres and demographics.

Human beings are not simply “units to be exploited”, he says.

“We are also not exclusive in any way except to say that no one’s welcome here who makes anyone else unwelcome.”

What tips does Mr McRae hope will assist other

venue operators?

1. The ‘Restaurant Sitting’ model – Instead of trying to keep the same crowd in a venue for hours, rotate the audience.

“Two two-hour gigs... and you’ve doubled your capacity for the evening. It’s like sittings in a restaurant,” Mr McRae says.

2. The permaculture philosophy of space – Ensure that every element of your venue serves multiple functions.

“I operate on a permaculture sort of philosophy that every element in the system has to serve at least three or four functions,” he says.

3. High-impact presentation on a modest budget – Spend your targeted resources on proper staging, acoustics, and decent lighting.

“Music, like any art form, needs to be properly presented,” Mr McRae says.

4. Cater to broad demographics – Avoid the financial trap of catering strictly to a narrow “young and cool” demographic.

“I’m not saying we don’t have them as an audience; we do, because we love what they bring,” he says.

5. Master the basics – Avoid running an “amateur affair”.

Focus on clear communication and absolute punctuality – if a show is scheduled to start at a certain time, it should start on time.

6. Embody business ethics to build Goodwill – Mr McRae has no time for tactics like creating fake ticket scarcity or using psychological ‘$39 instead of $40’ pricing.

“I don’t want to treat my customers like they’re stupid,” he says.

Does the Government have a role to play?

Although Mr McRae believes there are many things venues can do to adapt to the challenges in their industry, there is still a role for government.

“The number one thing that the government could do to restore not just the music industry, but to restore a whole aspect of community life in this country, is get rid of the pokies,” he says.

Mr McRae argues that clubs used to put effort into building community by hosting live bands, showing movies, and organising social activities.

Mr McRae is on a daily mission to replicate the vibrant, music-city success that Austin, Texas, achieved.

He and Ms Tully have intentionally crafted a winning recipe that serves artists, patrons and the community alike.

Rare glimpse of celebrated artist

by GEORGIA CURRY It’s the people that artist David Hockney didn’t paint that make him stand out (he once turned down a request from the Queen); instead sketching portraits of friends, lovers and artists.

Which is probably why the National Gallery of Australia holds more than 1,000 of his works (the most of an international artist) – 50 of which are now on display.

Canberra had great foresight because back in the ‘70s (before our gallery was even built), the NGA’s inaugural director began buying Hockney’s work and storing it at a Fyshwick storage depot.

What the NGA didn’t foresee with this latest Hockney exhibition is that the artist passed away in June, only adding to its value.

To give you an idea of Hockney’s significance, Paris has just held a major retrospective exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Museum (for which the NGA loaned a significant piece to).

Now Canberra is showcasing 50 of his portraits spanning 30 years, for free.

Hockney wasn’t interested in fame or celebrity – he never made portraits as commissions – yet he became one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

NGA director Dr Nick Mitzevich said the gallery had been collecting Hockney for more than 50 years.

“These prints give you a great insight into how intimacy and relationships are an important part of Hockney’s practice,” he said.

“As we celebrate Hockney now after passing away in June this spring, just one month shy of his 89th birthday, today is an important moment to reflect on such an important contribution that Hockney made to art.”

Until now, the NGA hasn’t explored the importance of portraits to Hockney’s life and art.

Disney’s Frozen comes to The Q

by NICHOLAS FULLER For years, Charlotte Morphett was Chloe Stevenson’s drama teacher and mentor. Now the pair are performing together as sisters Elsa and Anna in Free-Rain Theatre Company’s production of Frozen, a Broadway musical based on the Disney movie, running at The Q from 15 September to 11 October.

When the animated movie was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2018, it aimed at a more adult audience, taking “a deeper dive into the princesses’ psyches”.

That relationship is the work’s emotional centre; although the sisters spend much of the story apart, Morphett says their long real-life connection helps when they do share the stage.

“Most musicals are about romantic relationships,” Morphett says. “This is an intimate relationship, but it’s so far from a romantic part.

It’s trying to find those tiny little moments when we do have scenes together: how can we play with that type of intimacy?

“A lot of people who have come to watch rehearsals have said that there’s this genuine connection in the acting. You can only attribute that to the fact that we’ve known each other for so long.”

Morphett was Stevenson’s drama and performing arts teacher in high school, and codirected her in Free-Rain’s production of & Juliet earlier this year.

“She’s been my mentor – I’ve always looked up to Charli,” Stevenson says. “Most of my theatre performance knowledge would have come from Charli’s teaching – I’m so grateful for that.”

Now the two women have developed a genuine friendship.

The musical has a dozen more songs than the movie, deepening the characters.

Morphett says, like the best of Disney, this is a show for young and old.

“It’s a show for the entire family – even if you don’t have kids,” Morphett says. “It’s still a show that you can come and enjoy. It’s funny;

it’s sentimental; there are some really beautiful character relationships that you get to dive into.

It’s a show that everyone’s going to enjoy.”

The Killing Rules is a deeply compelling teen horror with some real bite behind it. Combining high school drama with an action-packed tale of mystery and monsters, this was an outrageous treat for older teenage readers.

Going through Shiloh’s possessions with Shiloh’s friend Luce (Arsema Thomas), the pair find her scrapbook of planned future adventures. Luce then convinces Jax to go with her to the plank walk on Mount Kwan in Thailand in honour of her sister and to conquer her fears.

The first Fall (2022) was a simple and effective thriller with a simple high concept: two adventurers stuck together on a 610-metre TV broadcasting tower in the middle of nowhere. The pair had to endure a lack of water and food, bearing the unrelenting sun and vultures while 30

trying to figure out a way down.

With that director now producing its overall franchise, Australian Spierig brothers (Winchester, 2018) pick up the directorial reins, taking the adventure this time up a 1219-metre-tall mountain.

The computer graphics are surprisingly noticeable and the stunts implausible, with the core reasoning of Jax undergoing the adventure in the first place completely illogical. The movie, however, plays like an adventure video game like the Uncharted (2007-2022) series, complete with melodramatic cutscenes in between practical problem-solving scenarios to ascend to the next level.

Verdict: A fun, pulpy ride that has shifted tone to enhance its own mythology à la the Fast and the Furious (2001-2028) franchise.

People sometimes say to me, “You must make a lot of money from your books!” The truth is, I don’t. Writing books is certainly not something I do for the money.

By the time you consider the hours spent writing, researching, editing and rewriting, I can assure you there are much easier ways to make a living! So why have I written five of them?

For me, writing has always been about sharing psychology in a way that might help someone. As a clinical psychologist, researcher and educator, I have been fortunate to learn an enormous amount from the people I have worked with, the research I have conducted and the students I have taught. Books

give me a way of taking some of that knowledge beyond the consulting room or university and making it available to anyone who might find it useful.

Each of my books has grown out of the questions, struggles and conversations I encounter in my work.

While they cover different topics and are written for different audiences, they share a common purpose: making psychology understandable, practical and useful in everyday life.

No Body’s Perfect is a helper’s guide to promoting positive body image in children and young people.

It was written for the adults around them, because the way we talk about bodies matters. One simple lesson is to become aware of our own body talk.

Children notice when adults criticise their weight, announce they have been bad for eating something or constantly discuss dieting. We can instead help children understand that their worth is about much more than appearance.

My clinical work with people experiencing eating disorders led to Eating Disorders: A Practitioner’s

Guide. Although primarily for health professionals, there is an important lesson for everyone: eating disorders are serious psychological illnesses, not diets gone too far or choices people make. If someone is struggling, listen, take their distress seriously and encourage professional support rather than becoming the food police.

Embracing You focuses on something many of us find surprisingly difficult: accepting ourselves as we are rather than constantly chasing an imaginary improved version. Notice how often your thoughts contain should, must or not enough. Then ask yourself, “According to whom?”.

My latest book, It’s Not Just You, grew from my Canberra Weekly columns and covers the very human problems we encounter: relationships, grief, ageing, anxiety, work stress, and coping when life doesn’t go to plan.

That is ultimately why I write. If something I have learnt through psychology can help someone understand themselves better, support someone they love, or simply feel a little less alone in what they are experiencing, then writing the book has been worthwhile. Lifeline Canberra marks World Suicide Prevention Day

by NICHOLAS FULLER One Canberran dies by suicide every week. Across Australia, 3,000 people die by suicide every year – nine every day.

On World Suicide Prevention Day (Thursday 10 September), Lifeline Canberra will hold its annual Out of the Shadows walk to remember those lost to suicide and support people experiencing emotional distress or mental illness.

“It’s a day that we can honour, reflect, and remember those that we’ve lost by suicide in the community – whether that’s family, friends, neighbours, colleagues,” Lifeline interim CEO Adam Miller said.

Every death by suicide impacts 150 people, Mr Miller said.

Mr Miller said there was no single explanation for why someone reached a suicidal crisis.

“It could be relationship breakdowns; it could be financial crisis. There’s a lot of underlying influences.”

Even national and international events – COVID lockdowns, overseas conflict – could impact people.

Mr Miller urged someone thinking about suicide to ring Lifeline’s 24hour crisis support service, 13 11 14.

“The hardest part is to take that first step: to pick up the phone and ring somebody,” Mr Miller said. “But I hear from people who have done that – and that one call has saved their life.

“We don’t judge what level somebody’s crisis is. If they’re in a crisis, that’s important to them. Pick up the phone and ring Lifeline.”

Lifeline receives around 3,000 phone calls nationally each day, as well as another 1,000 contacts

through text and webchat.

Although suicide deaths had fallen in the ACT in the most recent figures, demand for crisis support remains extraordinarily high.

Eight of the 10 busiest days in Lifeline’s six-decade history occurred in the past two years. In the last 12 months to the end of June, more than 36,000 Canberrans reached out to Lifeline – a 60 per cent increase over the year before.

Mr Miller said changes in normal behaviour could be a warning that someone was struggling.

People spend more time with work colleagues than with family, so they may notice someone has become withdrawn or behaving differently before relatives do.

“Don’t be afraid to ask somebody you know if you notice something’s wrong, or that they’ve not been themselves,” Mr Miller said.

The public can support Lifeline by attending or volunteering at events throughout the year; supporting community fundraising activities; and buying from Lifeline’s bookshop at the Fyshwick Markets. $26 covered the cost of one crisis-support call.

For Mr Miller, the most important thing is that people did not wait until a crisis became overwhelming before reaching out.

“The biggest thing is to talk to your friends and family,” Mr Miller said. “Don’t be afraid to ask somebody that you know if you notice something’s wrong with somebody, or that they’ve not been themselves. They’re probably just waiting for somebody to ask that they can talk to about it. Then refer them through to Lifeline. We’re here for every Canberran.”

Canberra turns blue for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

by NICHOLAS FULLER Canberra landmarks, including the National Carillon, Questacon, and Old Parliament House, turned blue last week to raise awareness of prostate cancer, as local advocates urge men to speak to their GPs about testing.

The Prostate Cancer Support Group – ACT Region is marking Prostate Cancer Awareness Month throughout September.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia: every year, around 29,000 men are diagnosed each year, or 79 new cases every single day – and nearly 4,000 Australian men die every year from it.

“One in five men are likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime,” the Group’s president, Greg McRoberts, said. “That’s one in five dads, brothers, husbands, nephews, and mates.

“Our goal this September is to make sure more people in our community understand the importance of early detection and support.”

At the moment, only 36 per cent of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at Stage 1 when the disease is easiest to treat, Mr McGregor said.

New clinical guidelines for early detection of prostate cancer, released in August, recommend that men aged 50 to 69 have a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test every two years.

Men at higher risk may be advised to begin two-yearly testing from the age of 45.
