Canadian Stage shares our work on four stages spread across our great city. The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Berkeley Street Theatre Complex bookend the vibrant St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood and run along what was once the shore of Lake Ontario. Our beautiful High Park Amphitheatre is nestled within the grassy hills and forests of our city’s most beloved park. And the Winter Garden Theatre is located in the heart of Toronto’s bustling downtown core. Canadian Stage is grateful to be able to tell our stories on this bountiful land that we all share. This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: the Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Director’s Note Gregory Prest

“Ask somebody to love you; takes a lot of nerve” – Paul Simon For me, Twelfth Night is Shakespeare’s great play about the madness of love - the slippery slope of the intoxicating state of obsessive romantic infatuation, the racing thoughts, the idealization of another person, the desperate hope that our feelings might somehow be returned, and how all of this manifests itself in our behaviour in that glorious, vulnerable, humiliating, all too human limbo. Shakespeare called this play Twelfth Night which was one of the most important holidays in the Elizabethan calendar. The celebration marked the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas, culminating on the eve of the Feast of Epiphany. It was a period of licensed festivity - a temporary suspension of ordinary rules and hierarchies. Houses hosted feasts, masques, dancing, music, games, drinking, practical jokes, and amateur theatricals. For a brief period, the world was allowed to turn upside down and many of the customs involved the reversal of status. Servants could mock masters. Young people could mock elders. Women disguised themselves as men; men disguised themselves as women. Identity became fluid. The normal social order was suspended. While the actual play does not take place during this festival, the spirit of it is alive and well in the upended, anarchic, beautiful, freeing, subversive, and strange making experience of plummeting to the bottom of love with a capital L. The world turns upside down. This play and our production is another attempt to beautifully understand ourselves, laugh at ourselves, and forgive ourselves. I think of Twelfth Night as a comedy in a minor key. Unlike many of Shakespeare’s comedies, not every wound heals completely. The clown - not the lovers - has the final word, reminding us that storms continue, time moves forward, and joy is never entirely separate from sadness. Love can transform us. It can rescue us. It can also confuse us and leave us shipwrecked. Welcome to Illyria.
