Romeo &Juliet
Written by William Shakespeare

Canadian Stage has four homes spread across our great city. The Bluma Appel and the Berkeley Street Complex bookend the vibrant St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood and run along what was once the shore of Lake Ontario. Our beautiful High Park Amphitheatre is nestled within the grassy mounds and forests of our city’s most beloved park. Our most recent addition, the Winter Garden Theatre, is located right in the bustling downtown core. Canadian Stage is grateful to be able to tell our stories on this bountiful land that we all share. This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: the Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Director’s Note
Marie Farsi
Romeo and Juliet has come to symbolize idealized, all-consuming love. In shaping this production for the park, I was drawn to what lies beneath the romantic lens through which this story is so often viewed. I wanted to create a world where the actors, the creative team, and I could excavate the play’s darker core—its tensions, its violence, its complex and contradictory characters—while still crafting a sensual, mythic atmosphere that honours the poetry of Shakespeare’s language.
I chose to set the play in Southern Italy during the interwar period (1930s–1940s), a time of deep political unrest, rising authoritarianism, rigid gender roles, and stark economic divisions. It was a world clinging to moral order while chaos simmered beneath the surface. In this landscape, cycles of violence and vengeance are passed down like inheritance. It is a deeply patriarchal, pious society governed by bloodlines, honour, and superstition— an Italy of vendetta.
Rather than modernizing the play, this historical frame sharpens its resonance. The past echoes eerily in the present, drawing out the play’s timeless tensions. Shakespeare himself imagined Italy as a heightened, metaphorical landscape—less concerned with accuracy than with emotional and dramatic possibility. In the same spirit, I’ve taken liberties, inspired particularly by the South: where the sun crushes the piazzas, emotions run high, and the lines between danger and desire blur. It’s a place where beauty and decay live side by side, where walls remember the grandeur of a lost civilization.
This show is for everyone—for those new to Shakespeare and for lifelong lovers of his work. At its heart, it’s a story of young people trying to forge their own path in a world that won’t make space for them. I invite you to watch with abandon and delight—and to rediscover the play you thought you knew.
