Canadian Stage shares our work on four stages spread across our great city. The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Berkeley Street Theatre Complex bookend the vibrant St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood and run along what was once the shore of Lake Ontario. Our beautiful High Park Amphitheatre is nestled within the grassy hills and forests of our city’s most beloved park. And the Winter Garden Theatre is located in the heart of Toronto’s bustling downtown core. Canadian Stage is grateful to be able to tell our stories on this bountiful land that we all share. This sacred land has held story for thousands of years: stories that live in the fabric of who we are as a nation. Canadian Stage would like to acknowledge and thank the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of this territory: the Anishinaabe Nations (including the Mississaugas of the Credit), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat and Métis Nations. We give thanks to the Nations recorded and unrecorded, acknowledged and unacknowledged, who also share the responsibility for this territory. We honour the Dish With One Spoon Treaty and our responsibility to peaceably share and care for the resources that surround us. We are honoured to be in this meeting place called Tkaronto that many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people from across Turtle Island call home.

Director’s Note Chris Abraham

Welcome to Crow’s Theatre’s production of Rogers v. Rogers, adapted by Michael Healey from Alexandra Posadzki’s awardwinning book, Rogers v. Rogers: The Battle for Control of Canada’s Telecom Empire, winner of the 2025 National Business Book Award and drawn from her excellent reporting for The Globe and Mail. Canadian Stage is the second of four stops on our Rogers v. Rogers national tour, after its record-breaking premiere in Crow’s 2025.26 season. With Rogers v. Rogers, Michael once again takes non-fiction source material and sends it through the same sharp, satirical spin-cycle that defined The Master Plan, his Dora Award–winning adaptation of Josh O’Kane’s Sideways: The City Google Couldn’t Buy, which was also commissioned by Crow’s and premiered in our season. And while it’s based on real events, make no mistake: this is a satirical work of fiction—facts have been nudged, conversations invented, and reality adjusted wherever it proved inconvenient. After all the appropriate liberties with reality have been taken, Michael gets back to what really interests him: the fault lines of Canadian power— where public interest and private ambition collide. The runaway success of The Master Plan, and the unprecedented demand for Rogers v. Rogers has reaffirmed something we’ve come to understand at Crow’s: audiences are hungry for stories about our city—stories that let us see ourselves, and our politics, reflected. It might also be that there’s nothing Torontonians relish more than a front- row seat to a homegrown public disaster—especially when someone else is sorting through the wreckage.

In the interest of maintaining the highest possible standards of chaos management, we’re happy to welcome back the incomparable Tom Rooney, who many of you will remember from his remarkable work at both the Stratford Festival and Shaw Festival. Having Tom return to lead this tour-de-force one-person show is a gift. Rogers v. Rogers is part of a growing body of work supported through our signature new play development program: The Canadian Literature Adaptation Fund, which brings significant Canadian fiction and non-fiction to the stage. The work made possible through this fund has come to define much of what we do at Crow’s Theatre, with productions that are among our most critically acclaimed and commercially successful. A Fine Balance, Fifteen Dogs, The Master Plan, and Rogers v. Rogers demonstrate how powerfully audiences respond when celebrated Canadian literary and journalistic works are brought vividly to life onstage. This fall, we have announced a major fundraising campaign to grow the fund, alongside its renaming in honour of Margaret Atwood. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate Margaret’s extensive collection of writing, alongside her career-long championing of Canadian writers and their work. Thank you to Brendan, Monica and Canadian Stage for presenting this return engagement to Toronto. We are thrilled to share this work with new audiences in our city. Thank you for joining us at Rogers v. Rogers. Your being here proves that Canadians do, in fact, enjoy seeing their own stories placed under theatre lights.

Reframing the Story Josh O’Kane

Author and Globe and Mail culture reporter I’ve read millions of words of media commentary in my life, but none have stuck with me more than what my friend Mel told me after seeing Michael Healey’s The Master Plan: “I wish I could get all my news in theatre form.” Healey adapted his 2023 play from my second book, Sideways: The City Google Couldn’t Buy, which unpacked the ways in which a secretive Google side project called Sidewalk Labs failed at building a tech-laced lakefront community in Ontario. There’s a copy of Sideways on Mel’s shelf to this day. But a book can be a 10-hour-or-more commitment; a play usually packs its punches into a couple of hours. How could I be mad if she liked The Master Plan more? Like my friend Alexandra Posadzki, I’ve dedicated both my journalism career and 6

probably too much of my spare time trying to help Canadians understand how their country works. We do this by dismantling the artifice of powerful systems in pursuit of truth. Posadzki’s book Rogers v. Rogers: The Battle for Control of Canada's Telecom Empire is a sterling example of this work. It unpacks the absurdities that underpin one of our biggest corporate dynasties and how its decisions can undermine competitive markets. Whether by coincidence or not – let’s call it a coincidence – she’s also had her book adapted by Healey and Crow’s Theatre. Much like The Master Plan, the stage version of Rogers v. Rogers deviates from its source material in its pursuit of laughter, and, crucially, of big ideas. As journalists, Posadzki and I have to stick to the facts as we report them. Healey, one

of Canada’s great satirists, has far more flexibility than us in his creative affairs. This pair of plays can teach us as much about how power works in the 21st century as it does about the power of theatre to help us understand ourselves. Every non-fiction author has their little daydreams about having their books adapted to become a feature-length thriller or bingeable miniseries. So I can admit that when Crow’s first approached me in 2022 about adapting Sideways for the stage, I was pleasantly surprised but a little confused. This was a 107,000-word book about the public sector’s woefully inadequate power balance with Big Tech. It had dozens of characters across three countries. How could you condense all of that into an evening at the theatre? I took up the offer. It was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made, if one that came with some initially uncomfortable feelings. I’m writing this on my son’s first week of daycare and can’t help but notice the emotional parallels. Both situations require letting go. Sideways wasn’t my story – put most simply, it’s the work of a reporter reporting – but I had nonetheless spent five years unearthing the details of what actually happened when Toronto went up against the might of one of the most well-funded companies in the world.

them. And where I wrote Sideways to showcase Toronto as a breeding ground for Big Tech to push its digital might into the physical world, The Master Plan held a mirror up to the city and told a parallel story about a place with a chronic inability to get things done. The theatre can do far more than just find new audiences for detailed stories about current events. I learned first-hand, with Rogers v Rogers and The Master Plan, that it can help us better see ourselves. Rogers v. Rogers quickly reminds us that we exist in an economy of oligopolies. What we don’t often see are the insecurities and power struggles that entrench or threaten to dismantle – but mostly entrench – those oligopolies. By handing the great Tom Rooney every character to play, Healey and director Chris Abraham manage to lampoon Canada’s bright-red telecom giant while transmuting the truths of Posadzki’s book into an examination of the narrowness of choice Canadians have throughout our lives. So let go of your worries and preconceptions and enjoy the show. You’ll walk away thinking about more than your cell-phone bill.

Once I did let go, I was given an extraordinary lesson in the power of art. Healey took great care to get the facts right, with two caveats: he would deviate from the truth to make a joke or to make a point. I had a professional responsibility not to comment on the sheer silliness of some events that happened, and simply left those details hanging on the page; Healey took those details and ran with
