The Medium Project Stream 2024 distributed a total of $260,000 to 9 Indigenous youth-led projects and initiatives. Creation received 40 proposals from 7 Provinces and Territories, representing a funding request of $1,159,600.
Projects funded through the Medium Project Stream 2024 focused on providing Indigenous youth with opportunities to deepen their connections to culture while also supporting them in building meaningful relationships with other youth and with Elders. Grantees reported that their funding primarily supported them in creating welcoming environments that facilitated relationship building. They also used grant funds to enhance their programming and provide honoraria to program participants and collaborators. Seeing youth actively participating in their programming and excited to engage with each other and with Elders made grantees feel like their projects were a success. Grantees also shared that the intergenerational connections fostered as part of their projects encouraged relationship building amongst other community members and contributed to fostering a stronger sense of community overall. This enhanced sense of community also led to increased community support and collaboration on grantee projects, which helped youth leaders overcome challenges with scheduling, transportation, and inflation. In the end, grantees in the Medium Project Stream saw success in strengthening connections to culture, in fostering intergenerational relationships, building community, and strengthening youth leadership. As a result, grantees also reported an increase in overall youth empowerment and youth engagement

Don’t be afraid to take up space with your culture and your voice When we worked on this project, I saw how powerful it was for Inuit youth to share stories, songs, and performances on stage. Even if it feels scary at first, your community and your culture give you strength, and people are proud to see you shine.
—Advice from Medium Project Stream 2024 Grantee
Working on the Safe Water Studios Language Project has shown me that language is more than words. It is the heartbeat of our stories, the bridge between generations, and a way to carry our cultures forward. When we gather, listen, and share, we are not just learning a language, we are keeping our communities connected.
