Land-Based Youth Group
Funded projects in this stream focused on land-based learning, capacity building, cultural revitalization, and knowledge preservation and sharing. Providing Indigenous youth with employment opportunities was a priority for funded groups; nearly half of funding distributed was used for salaries, and all grantees hired at least 2 Indigenous youth, for a total of 39 youth employed through funded projects. Despite facing challenges with participant engagement at the outset of their projects, grantees successfully increased youth participation in their programming.
Youth leaders used flexibility to achieve their project outcomes –they adapted their initial project plans to make activities more accessible, and focused on outreach, collaboration and relationship building to increase their overall reach. Through their projects, grantees gained leadership skills, increased their cultural and ceremonial knowledge, and developed skills in knowledge sharing and communication.
Overall, the Large Projects Stream 2022 grant played an important role in supporting Indigenous youth leadership and empowerment through employment opportunities, as well as supporting youth and community wellness through community-building and connections to land and culture.
