The Small Project Stream 2023 distributed a total of $130,500 in funding to nine Indigenous youth-led projects and initiatives. Creation received 20 proposals from seven provinces and territories, representing a funding request of $302,210.

Grantee projects funded through the Small Project Stream 2023 focused on supporting youth in strengthening connections to their cultures. Youth leaders included cultural teachings into language learning programs, land-based excursions, and arts-based activities. Grantees also worked to create safe and inclusive programming spaces that supported youth in building relationships with other youth and in strengthening connections with community. Throughout their projects, youth leaders faced scheduling challenges because of factors like participant availability, other commitments, and other community events. Grantees highlighted flexibility and communication as essential tools for navigating challenges, and for maintaining connections with participants during periods without programming. Many grantees also reported that they saw these challenges as learning opportunities, and that overcoming them supported them in strengthening their leadership, communication, and project management skills. Both youth leaders and youth participants also gained cultural and traditional knowledge, which supported them in feeling more connected to their cultures. In the end, grantees in the Small Project Stream saw success in strengthening youth understanding of cultural practices and teachings, building relationships with other youth, enhancing youth leadership, deepening connections to community, and increasing overall youth empowerment
