The results are in, and as forecast, registered Jersey activity in Canada continued to expand in 2022. Totalling 11,891, this marks the fifth straight year of more than 11,000 registrations. A wider view of registration numbers sees a 10-year average growth rate of 3.01%, six times the industry average. It is good see the dairy industry in Canada continue to grow, and good to see Jerseys take a greater role in this growth, as a pragmatic addition for producers looking to cut costs and increase payments.
This issue includes the results of the 67th annual All Canadian competition. A culmination of a year on the Canadian Jersey show circuit, the All Canadian competition provides an even playing field where geography or time constraints may otherwise prevent exhibitors from competing alongside one another. Following close on the heels of the 2022 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the All Canadians are supported by our members and sponsors, and this year’s 189 entries are the most ever in the contest’s current format. Clearly this speaks to not only the return of shows and events, but the overall surge in Jersey numbers in Canada.
Looking forward, we are excited to be holding our Annual General Meeting in Levis, Quebec, in conjunction with the Jersey Quebec AGA. This unique opportunity will afford attendees 3 days of socializing, sightseeing and speakers – in both official languages. Only since the return of in-person events have we realized what we were missing during the

And that's it, the end of my career as Jersey Canada president and director. It has been an honour and an incredible experience to serve this organization for eight years. For the young ones who will read these lines, know that getting involved brings not only responsibilities but incredible opportunities.
Over the past eight years, I have had the chance to work with great people, both Jersey Canada staff and the majority of directors I have worked with. I will not deny that there have been more difficult times, but I have always tried to remain true to my principles and my convictions, and defend the interests of the region I represented while working to enact the values of the association.
From a personal point of view, my involvement at the national level allowed me to improve my English considerably and gave me the chance to visit our beautiful country by attending AGMs, often taking advantage of these trips to include a short vacation with my spouse or friends. I will have set foot in, made contacts and met people in seven of 10 Canadian provinces which, for me, represents a great wealth and is a great reward for the time and effort I have put forward.
While being a director offers a chance to travel and make new friends, it is a serious commitment that requires meetings with different committees and industry partners, managing human resources and budgets, planning events, and making decisions that will not always please everyone. Remember, the director with whom you do not agree on occasion is first and foremost a volunteer, a dairy farmer, a mother or a fa-
ther. The directors who represent you do their best to satisfy all members so let us be grateful for the work they do, because they have many other responsibilities besides in their own businesses and personal lives.
I thank deeply all those with whom I have worked or met in recent years, you are part of what will remain for me a very enriching experience, and one I will remember fondly.

PREMIER BREEDER
Presented to the holder of the Prefix winning the highest number of points won in individual female classes with a maximum of 7 animals considered for award calculation. Animals used for the award calculation do not necessarily have to be owned by the winner. Calculation of the Premier Breeder award is determined strictly by the prefix of the animal, which can be identified on the Certificate of Registration. •
Points are awarded as follows/ Les points sont attribués comme suit:
PREMIER EXHIBITOR
Presented to the exhibitor/owner (individual, partnership, or institution) having the highest number of points won in individual female classes by not more than 7 animals owned by the exhibitor. This does not limit the number of animals that may be shown. In the case of jointly-owned animals, joint ownership is considered as one exhibitor. No part of the points awarded counts toward the individual score of any of the joint owners.
PREMIER EXPOSANT

Can you tilt a Jersey on her side when pregnant to trim her feet? - Aimee P.
K: To tilt a pregnant Jersey/cow or not depends upon the hoof trimming technique being used. For example, my way of hoof trimming uses a hoof rack or trimming chute, where the three legs are standing on the chute floor with one leg being lifted and secured so that the hoof trimmer can work on that hoof, so tilting isn’t necessary. However, when using a tilting table, since the mechanism itself already tilts the animal, ideally the most comfortable way to trim their hooves is to make sure there is good cushioning inside the padded chute doors where the doors snugly or loosely hold the cow lying on her side.
How often should show calves have their hooves trimmed? – Jade D.
K: In my experience I find that show calve's hooves should be trimmed before the start of show season which is typically spring and later again during the fall. But this schedule is dependent on the animal itself, as show calves typically require touch ups in between this period unlike non-show calves.
Do you block every white line? Is it different if in a tie stall, pack or free stall?
–
Unique Valleystream Genetics
K: If a free stall or pack, a block can be a good idea since the cow walks on cement floors that could be wet, or they walk on different kinds of flooring. Whereas a tie stall, it depends on the bedding situation and the hoof problem, where sometimes a block is needed and sometimes not. This decision is best left to the hoof trimmer together with the cow owner.
Ask the Professional
Written by Kiyoshi Kamei
Kiyoshi Kamei has been trimming hooves for 40 years and is passionate about the trade. He focuses on inspiring the younger generation and educating the cattle community on the art of quality hoof trimming and care.
Your thoughts on trimming outside wall and inside? I have heard it’s not recommended, but sometimes it’s needed.
K: Ideally an experienced hoof trimmer should trim the hooves evenly every time, but sometimes either the outside or inside wall could be trimmed unevenly. So in my experience a hoof trimmer needs to be careful when trimming the outside and inside wall, because if you trim too much off either wall, the cow could be unbalanced when walking.
Any tips for if you find a sore cow, caught early but don’t want to be too aggressive or finding an ulcer? Is pressure the best method?
K: If you notice a sore cow and see that it has an ulcer during the early stages, the treatment could involve gently digging out the ulcer until fresh blood comes out. I believe digging out the ulcer is likely necessary or else the ulcer may continue to grow. After digging, then use hydrogen peroxide and when you see bubbling, this shows that the debris is coming out. After wiping the bubbling, use tetracycline powder into the clean ulcer area and put some cotton and bandage well.
How do you identify different white lines. Either bacterial or physical impact (rock, wrong step) is there a way at all?
K: A well-trimmed hoof would have a nice healthy white/creamy line as its name implies. However, with an infection caused by bacteria, the white line looks darker and is a little thinner. With physical impact caused by an object like a pebble, the white line starts as a bruise and the site is tender to pressure and without proper treatment it may turn into an ulcer. If the cow owner notices these symptoms early, consulting a hoof trimmer to determine the best course of action is best since every situation is unique.
Can you correct pedal bone once it has carried the wrong angle for a period of time?
K: Yes, you can correct a pedal bone once it has carried at the wrong angle for some time by regularly performing hoof trimming. The hoof trimmer will assess the severity of the wrong angle and trim accordingly. To avoid this situation, it would be best to check the cow’s feet before putting out to pasture for a long period of time.
How soon should a block cow be seen again? Is two weeks too early?
K: There is no time frame to leave the block on, it is better to observe instead. My suggestion is checking the treated hoof first and if it healed well and the area looks dry and clean, then leave the block on for another week to make sure of proper consistent healing. Then if the cow owner feels that the cow’s walking comfortably and the stride is back to normal, then the block can be removed.
How often does a Jersey need hoof trimming? How to tell if it needs to be done? – Samantha H.
K: With proper nutrition and good overall Jersey or cow health, a hoof grows on average 5-7mm a month, so a minimum of twice a year is recommended for hoof trimming, but of course if a hoof health issue arises, don’t hesitate to call your hoof trimmer since early detection prevents bigger problems later on. The way to tell if the cow needs their hooves trimmed is by observing how they walk such as if their stride length gets shorter, or their back hunches up. Good instincts by the cow owner are an important part of hoof health.

His dam is a VG-87 Matt that has been a true brood cow for the Unique herd in Alberta. The grandam is an EX-92-3E Governor that was shown not only as a heifer but was also named Grand in Morris in 2011 as a 2-yearold. Skyfall’s third dam is none other than Avonlea Mischief’s Magnolia-ET (EX-92 4E) who was the Jersey Canada Cow of the year in 2016. She was also nominated All-Canadian as a heifer and cow with her most notable show winning as the Intermediate Champion of the 2006 Royal Winter Fair. Rounding out the 4th generation of this pedigree is Avonlea Renaissance Mischief, who was nominated in milking form and as a heifer. This pedigree is deep with 9 generations of dams scoring Excellent or Very Good and it's a pedigree which has it all.
Sitting at 2066 LPI Skyfall is a breed leader. He is 866Kg of milk and to top it all over he is +14 for conformation. This makes him the only bull in the breed that is over 2000 LPI, over 800Kg of milk and over 14 for conformation. A bull that can do it all for you in one generation indeed!
To add to his profile, he is +12 for mammary system, +10 for feet and legs, and +10 for Dairy strength. Functionality is not lost with this bull as he is above average for herd life, mastitis resistance, milking speed and daughter fertility. He can truly do it all and is ready for you to use.
Skyfall brings a unique sire stack with outstanding traits that will make a profitable cow that looks great doing it! Whether it is the show ring you want to breed for or a barn full of great cows that have a will to milk, he is the bull you will not want to miss!

DFC Re-Launches Important Research Funding Program
Provided by/ fourni par: Dairy Farmers of Canada
Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is excited to announce renewed investment in DFC’s Dairy Production Research Funding Program, which helps to foster innovation, increase farm efficiency and sustainability, and enhance animal care, health and welfare. The Dairy Production Research Funding Program, which ran successfully from 1995 until 2010, was temporarily placed on hold until 2021 due to shifting priorities in Canada’s ever-evolving research funding environment. Now, thanks to new government-matching programs from agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), DFC’s investments in dairy research will reach even further.
DFC commits over $2 million annually towards research programs and priority areas; combining its investment with partner contributions last year increased that number upwards of $9 million. In 2022, recipients of DFC’s competitive research funding programs joined 45 ongoing projects, 34 institutions, more than 140 scientists and 130 students, and over 1,000 collaborations taking place on dairy farms across the country.
Other investments in research over the years have led to important advancements in dairy production, such as strengthening the animal assessment process in proAc-
tion®’s Animal Care module, and in onfarm best practices, such as demonstrating how frequent emptying or covering liquid manure storage tanks can help lower dairy’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
For this year’s Dairy Production Research Funding Program, DFC is primarily focused on investing in dairy farm sustainability as the sector commits to achieving net-zero GHG by 2050. This important program, along with DFC’s ongoing Nutrition Research Funding Program, support the organization’s 2022-2027 National Dairy Research Strategy.
The call for proposals for the Dairy Production Research Funding Program is now closed; select principal investigators will be notified in mid-February if they are invited to the next step of the selection process. DFC’s ProAction Animal Care Framework Consistent With National Standards, Says NFACC
An independent review by a credible third-party organization has reaffirmed that the proAction Animal Care module developed by Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) and implemented on Canadian dairy farms is consistent with national animal care standards.
In a letter to DFC this November, the National Farm Animal Care Council confirmed it has independently reviewed the content of the DFC’s proAction® program and found it to meet all requirements of Canada’s Animal Care Assessment Framework. This national framework was developed by consensus among multiple stakeholders and sets a credible process for developing animal care assessment programs.
“This declaration from NFACC serves as further recognition that the best management practices followed by Canadian dairy farmers under the proAction program are consistent with the highest standards of animal care,” says DFC President Pierre Lampron. “Under proAction, Canadian dairy farmers produce high-quality, nutritious milk in accordance with some of the world’s most stringent standards. proAction builds on robust federal and provincial regulations, instilling confidence that every drop of Canadian milk was produced with care.”
The Animal Care module of proAction is based on the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle, which is a science-based, nationally developed guideline containing both requirements and best practices for dairy cattle care and handling.
DFC recently issued its 2022 Progress Report on proAction, highlighting progress made by the dairy sector over the past year in the program’s six priority areas: milk quality, food safety, animal care, livestock traceability, biosecurity and the environment. It also draws links between proAction and DFC’s Net-Zero Strategy.

Written by/Écrit par Madison Smith
While working for the Gorrill family at Carim Dairy near Bulyea, Saskatchewan, we were experiencing a lot of trouble keeping the Jersey calves alive . The calf protocols were changed but nothing made a big difference in preventing them from getting sick. Housing was changed many times over the years, going from individual stalls to group housing, from being fed with bottles to purchasing an automatic calf feeder. Typically, the calves would get sick between day 5 to 14 but if we could get them through that 2-week critical period then they would be good. The sickness would start with dehydration and scours and occasionally they would develop respiratory infections. Electrolytes and a variety of different treatments didn’t seem to be working, including changing the amount of milk and frequency of feeding times. Whole milk and milk replacers were both used to see if that made a difference. At that time around 90% of the calves would get sick and 60% would die. The Jersey calves seems more sensitive compared to the calves that were crossed with Holsteins and the Jerseys would almost always be the only ones that got sick.
After a bit of researching, we came up with the idea to try coconut oil. The decision was made after looking at the fat profiles of milk and discovering that maybe the calves weren’t getting enough
energy through the whole milk or milk replacer. We started out with liquid coconut oil and added 2 tbsp to each of the bottles of milk replacer every feeding. We didn't start the addition of coconut oil until they were off colostrum. We eventually switched to solid coconut oil because it was more economical. We would use the same amount, and it would melt in the bottles prior to feeding.
After a few days it became noticeable that the coconut oil was making a big difference. We went from having to treat 90% of the calves to around 10%. The calves manure went from very watery to solid and the death rate dropped down to 2%. When the calves were on coconut oil and needed a treatment, they responded better to the medication. A custom milk replacer was ordered with coconut oil al-
"We have always strived to continually improve wherever we can on our farm. Improving animal care is a top priority for us. Since we began raising Jerseys, we have always been challenged with our calves in the first 21 days of their lives. If they get through that period, the challenge is over, and they are headed for success. We learned about the coconut oil presentation at the Jersey Canada 2022 annual meeting, and after lots of discussion, we tried it on our next calves. My mom quickly noticed a difference, they did not seem to hiccup or waver in their early days of life. We have continued to use it on all our Jersey calves for the first 21 days. We do still have some regular health issues but since we started using the coconut oil the calves seem to be able to handle that stress and not get pulled down by what's ailing them. Coconut oil is here to stay in our calf program!!"

ready mixed in and it worked just as well as manually adding it to the bottles.
The science behind the coconut oil and why it could help the calves is because it is a medium chain fatty acid. An important energy source in milk comes from fatty acids. These fatty acids are found in the milk in globules and are broken down by the calf to supply energy. There are short, medium, and long chain fatty acids, depending how long the carbon chain is.
Medium chain fatty acids are found in higher quantities in Jersey whole milk compared to Holstein whole milk. These medium chain fatty acids are more easily absorbed by the calf compared to the other fatty acids because they can be absorbed straight from the small intestine to the liver with the aid of saliva.
The long chain fatty acids require enzymes from the pancreas to be able to be broken down for energy. In a newborn calf the pancreas doesn’t make these enzymes until around two weeks of life. So, if the milk the calf is being fed is high in long chain fatty acids, they won’t be able to use it as an energy source.
Milk replacers are typically formulated using animal fat as the main source of fat. Animal fat has a high percentage of long chain fatty acids, so even if the calf is getting an adequate amount of milk replacer, they will still have trouble breaking down most of the fat. A bonus seems

to be that medium chain fatty acids also have antimicrobial properties and help with immune response of the calf, which explains why it responds to treatments better while on coconut oil.
The more medium chain fatty acids the calf has access to in the first two weeks of life the more it will have an advantage over calves that aren’t getting enough of those fatty acids. If you are having trouble keeping your calves healthy it could be beneficial to try adding coconut oil to Jersey calves’ diets.

Payneside Farms Experiencing Benefits
Written by/Écrit par Claire Swale, Marketing Content Manager, Select Sires
Doug and Jill Robinson are owners of Payneside Farms Inc in Finch, Ontario. Milking 100 Jerseys through two Robots in a freestall system, they installed CowManager 5 years ago.
"We were looking for a management tool that could make a difference to our farm and family" says Doug. "Now we wouldn't be without it".
“We quickly discovered just how much added information the system provided, heats were being detected quickly and accurately and we were identifying cows as they were getting sick, rather than when they were sick”.
costs. “It’s taken a lot of guesswork out of heat detection, clearly identifying cows in heat and giving us the optimum breeding window for inseminations” says Doug. “It’s a 24 hour service, catching every cow in heat, even when we don’t see the tell-tale visible signs- it’s saving us time and money”.
Doug is quick to recognize the benefits and the simplicity of the system. Since installing CowManager they have notably reduced their vet bills by utilising and trusting the Health Module. CowManager notifies “health alerts” typically 12 to 24 hours before cows
ings in the health and reproduction of their dairy herd.
Focused on the future of dairy farming and striving for efficiency and profitability, Payneside Farms continue to utilize CowManager, to create a farming system that best serves their animals, the industry and their family.
To learn more about CowManager® visit selectsires.com/products/cowmanager.
All the milking cows, dry cows, and heifers ready for breeding at Payneside have CowManager ear sensors in. The sensors measure ear temperature, combined with eating, rumination, and activity patterns, all this information is utilized in the Fertility, Health and Nutrition Modules the programme provides.
Real-time data collected through the ear sensors is relayed through a router and readily accessible through their computer, or through the app on their phones every minute of the day.
Since installing CowManager, they really appreciate the accuracy of the Fertility Module, and have seen pregnancy rates improve while reducing semen
display clinical symptoms, making treatment a lot easier and more successful. “With CowManager you catch sick cows earlier, we might treat a cow with aspirin or pro-biotics, but early intervention usually prevents the problem getting worse or the need for antibiotics, it also allows us to track and monitor their recovery”.
CowManager has been a great investment for the Robinson family at Payneside. As a family of four, they all have the app on their phones, allowing each of them to access the most current information and receive alerts. It’s freed up more time for them as a family and has allowed them to make valuable sav-

Remembering Charles Gurney
Written by Steve Gurney
Charlie was a very proud partner in Llolyn Farms from a young boy to their dispersal in 1999 and his subsequent retiring from the farming operation in 2019. He greatly enjoyed his involvement in the Jersey breed and all the friends and opportunities that arose from it. From his presidency of the Ontario Club in 1998 to his two trips to Brazil, one to judge and one to educate, to the World Jersey trip to Australia and New Zealand to their 50th anniversary sale at the farm to helping his children and all of his nieces and nephews show calves across Ontario at
local shows, 4-H events and the Royal. He was also well remembered as a 4-H leader for 29 years and was a strong role model during that time.
Charlie found enjoyment not only from Jerseys and leading and mentoring others but also in restoring antique John Deere tractors, trips to Florida with Gayle and the accomplishments of his extended family.
He will be greatly missed by all those he came into contact with over the years but we can take comfort in the fact that he left a lasting impression on us all.

When was your farm established?
Arjan and I first started Hoften Farms in 2016. Our first Farm Star prefix Jersey was born January 2014, and still milking in the herd today.
How many cows are you milking and what percentage Jersey?
40 cows, 90% are either pure or half Jersey. We have two pure Ayrshires in our herd as well.
What were some of the reasons you choose to milk Jerseys?
Components was reason #1. But after milking them we realized they not only are excellent at components but also have great longevity, are exceptionally efficient at converting feed to butterfat, have good feet and legs, and good reproduction. Their personality and strength of character also won us over. Jerseys are very maternal cows, with hearts of gold and we are in love with everything about them.
Where did you purchase your first Jerseys from?
Lone Pine Jerseys
Growth of Jerseys in Western Canada
After a record breaking 2021, registry activity in the 4 Western provinces saw 2008 animals registered in the Jersey Canada herdbook. This number is the 2nd highest Western total in the modern era, and continues a growth trend in the West which shows a 10-year Average Annual Growth Rate of 4.4%, 47% more than the national average and leading all regions. This growth is reflected in transfer activity as well, which shows a 27% AAGR over 10 years. Much of this growth can be attributed to young farmers who have either entered the industry through a new entrant program or recently started out on their own. We asked some of these farmers why they decided to milk jerseys.
Randy VanDoornik of Dairy Lane Farms
Saint Claude, Manitoba
When was your farm established? 1969
How many cows are you milking and what percentage Jersey?
100 cows total, 56 Jerseys and should be entirely Jerseys in 2-2.5 years
What were some of the reasons you choose to milk Jerseys?
We decided to switch to Jerseys mainly for the size of the animal. Our milk barn facility is quite old so, alley size and stall dimensions are too small for Holsteins. We were being penalized on our cattle assessments for hock scores. My theory is/was, if I can take a cow that produces on average slightly less (Jersey) and put it in a barn more suitable to its size and keep the level of cow comfort higher, it should be able to achieve the same production as a Holstein(which on average produces a little more) in a environment where the cow is slightly more uncomfortable.
Where did you purchase your first Jerseys from?
We purchased five of our first Jerseys from Chimewood Jerseys (Gerry and Anita Norrish) about five years ago to try them out. Early summer of 2022 we purchased almost all of Chimewood's milking cows. We have also made a handshake deal to purchase all of their youngstock as well. Gerry and Anita have been absolutely wonderful to work with throughout this deal.
When was your farm established?
In the 1980s in Ontario and relocated to Manitoba in 2017 where we started milking Jerseys.
How many cows are you milking and what percentage Jersey?
Milking +/- 120, 100% purebred registered Jerseys
What were some of the reasons you choose to milk Jerseys?
The main reason was in our barn, the stall lengths do not provide enough lounge room for Holsteins and alley ways are more narrow. The concrete is best suited for a small breed cow. So the easiest fix was to go milk Jerseys in Manitoba. Feed conversion into milk and butterfat is the best of most breeds. Eating 70 % of what a Holstein needs in a day is definite savings!
Where did you purchase your first Jerseys from?
From several farms across the USA. Some closer to home in Manitoba from Clanman Jerseys and the Dorlyn herd from Ontario.

Striving for Environmental Efficiency with Jerseys
By: Eric Baumann, M.SC., Director, Leeds-Grenville
size, high producing cows require less energy for maintenance per kg of milk, which reduces the carbon footprint for each kg milk. There are several factors that have influenced the increase in productivity, chiefly advances in genetics and management, which has shifted from pastoral based systems to the feeding of carefully balanced total-mixed rations.
As the effects of climate change generate headlines around the world, increasing attention is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining productivity. The dairy industry faces the delicate challenge of continuing to increase productivity while limiting resource consumption. Advancements in the dairy industry over the last 70 years have already drastically altered the environmental footprint associated with milk production. The carbon footprint (measured in CO2 equivalents) associated with the production of 1 billion kg of milk in 2007 was only 37% of the footprint to produce the same quantity of milk in 1944, and while the CO2 equivalents produced per cow doubled from 1944 to 2007, the CO2 equivalents per kg of milk produced have been reduced by over 60% (Capper et al., 2009).
The biggest driver for these improvements in environmental efficiency is the increase in milk yield per cow, which gives rise to the “dilution of maintenance”effect, namely that while energy required for maintenance is the same for low producing and high producing cows of similar
The Jersey breed has a distinct advantage for efficiency because a higher percentage of energy intake is used for production and less energy is lost for processes such as maintenance. Though milk yield for Jerseys is lower compared to Holsteins, energy intake is also significantly lower, and kg of energy- corrected milk (ECM) per kg of dry matter intake and kg of ECM per kg of liveweight are significantly higher for Jerseys (Kristensen et al., 2015). When examining the breed effect on the carbon footprint associated with cheese production, the three most important factors are body weight, milk yield and milk composition, with lower body weight, higher milk yield and higher components being favourable. In a comparison of Jerseys and Holsteins for cheese production which accounted for the different requirements of each breed in metrics such as the number of animals and land mass required, as well as amount
of waste produced, it was estimated that using Jerseys to produce cheese would reduce the carbon footprint by 20% (Capper and Cady, 2012). The efficiency advantage that the Jersey breed has could be due to anatomical differences, whereby the weight of the gastro-intestinal tract as a proportion of total bodyweight is higher in Jerseys than in Holsteins (Beecher et al., 2014). This indicates that a higher percentage of a Jersey cow’s bodyweight is tied to the digestive process and would explain why Jerseys are able to consume a higher percentage of their bodyweight in feed and could explain why Jersey need less energy for maintenance as a proportion of total energy requirement. Interestingly, the weight of the heart and lungs as a percentage of total bodyweight is also higher for Jerseys in a manner similar to that of high- performance athletes.
As we keep an eye on carbon emissions, it is important to be aware of strategies for further improvement, with continued increases in production and feed efficiency being obvious goals. A growing body of research suggests that Jerseys are a suitable choice in the search for environmentally friendly dairy cows due to their smaller frame size, higher milk component percentages and unique anatomy.

2022 Eastern Canada Field Report
By: Natasha Mckillop, Atlantic Extension Business Partner,
Canada
Greetings from the East Coast! I’m glad to say that 2022 was a great year and it brought with it many highlights!
First, I would like to say thank you to Jersey Canada and their crew for allowing me to help out at your 2022 National Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with your enthusiastic and talented team! It was also a great opportunity to connect with many Jersey breeders and enthusiasts from across the country!
In the Atlantic Region we are continuing to encourage growth and collaboration between dairy breed organizations. The New Brunswick Holstein Branch hosted our first ever jointbranch picnic, which had an open invitation to all dairy cattle breeders and industry members. The event, held in Sussex, New Brunswick, saw over 150 participants come together to celebrate the dairy industry with an afternoon of good food and fun!
This year also saw the return of Jerseys to Old Home Week (Charlottetown, PEI) after over 30 years of absence, much to the delight of spectators. We also had a very special addition to the dairy education area this year, with the acquisition of our very own Jersey ‘selfie cow’. She quickly became the star attraction, with many members of the public pausing to take their picture with her!
As your Holstein Canada partner in Field Service, I would like to take a moment to congratulate Jersey Canada on another strong year of registration and membership activity, and to also thank the members, breeders and enthusiasts that continue to support the Association, the breed, and the value of Jersey Canada services.
For this coming year I plan to continue to collaborate with Jersey Atlantic to cultivate growth and interest in the Jersey Breed in the Atlantic, support them in their upcoming activities and explore ways to best support our breeders within the region.
I’m extremely excited to see what lies ahead for 2023 and for the opportunity to continue to work with Jersey Canada to support and promote the Jersey Breed!
Until next time, Tasha
