Welcome to 2022, as we move towards new opportunities, continued growth and being able to have face to face contact with family, neighbors and attend functions whether personal or business. While preparing for our yearly audit and Annual General Meeting, I had the opportunity to review our past achievements. Congratulations first to Canadian Jersey owners! Another year celebrating increased registrations and transfers, while welcoming more new Jersey owners into the fold. It is important to recognize the steady growth we have experienced since 2016. Digging deeper, I noted that the largest growth in registrations has been in the Western provinces, where we may have fewer farms, but herds are much larger. It is fitting that we are in Saskatchewan for our Annual Meeting, which provides us the opportunity to celebrate this increase in the regional Jersey population. I would also like to acknowledge that during 2021 we saw a few of our established Jersey members retiring, with their herds dispersed throughout the country. We wish these members continued success in their future endeavors, and will be watching as the new owners of these animals move towards their own goals with the addition of established genetics. Change is inevitable, and with this in mind I would take this opportunity to wish our National Fieldman since 2006, Jean Marc Pellerin, all the best in future and thank him in for his hard work, plus friendship, during his time with Jersey
Canada. We welcome Louanne Marquis and Larry Sheardown to our extension team in Québec and Ontario respectively, along with Toby Kleinsasser and Darren Isaac who have been contracted for the West. When you have the opportunity, I would encourage all of you to welcome our new reps into the Jersey family. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Jersey Canada staff. They have experienced many changes in the past two years, but have continued to provide support, customer service and a friendly voice to anyone who has called or come to the office. We as staff would also like to thank the Board of Directors for their support and guidance in keeping the association on track. May 2022 continue to see growth and success for the Jersey breed in Canada. ••• Bienvenue en 2022, alors que nous nous dirigeons vers de nouvelles opportunités, une croissance continue et la possibilité d'avoir un contact face à face avec la famille, les voisins et d'assister à des fonctions personnelles ou professionnelles. Lors de la préparation de notre audit annuel et de notre assemblée générale annuelle, j'ai eu l'occasion de revoir nos réalisations passées. Félicitations d'abord aux propriétaires de Jerseys canadiens ! Une autre année célébrant l'augmentation des enregistrements et des transferts, tout en accueillant plus de nouveau propriétaires de Jersey dans nos rangs. Il est important de reconnaître la croissance constante que nous avons connue depuis 2016. En creusant plus profondément, j'ai remarqué que la plus forte croissance des enregistrements s'est produite dans les provinces de l'Ouest, où nous avons peut-être moins de fermes, mais les troupeaux sont beaucoup plus grands. Il est tout à fait approprié que nous soyons en Saskatchewan pour notre

assemblée annuelle, qui nous donne l'occasion de célébrer cette augmentation de la population régionale de Jersey. Je tiens également à souligner qu'en 2021, nous avons vu quelques-uns de nos membres établis de Jersey prendre leur retraite, leurs troupeaux étant dispersés dans tout le pays. Nous souhaitons à ses membres un succès continu dans leurs projets futurs et nous observerons les nouveaux propriétaires de ces animaux progresser vers leurs propres objectifs avec l'ajout d'une génétique établie. Le changement est inévitable, et dans cet esprit, je voudrais profiter de cette occasion pour souhaiter à notre conseiller national depuis 2006, JeanMarc Pellerin, tout le meilleur à l'avenir et le remercier pour son travail acharné, ainsi que son amitié, pendant son temps avec Jersey Canada. Nous accueillons Louanne Marquis et Larry Sheardown dans notre équipe au Québec et en Ontario respectivement, ainsi que Toby Kleinsasser et Darren Isaac qui ont été engagés pour l'Ouest. Lorsque vous en aurez l'occasion, je vous encourage tous à accueillir nos nouveaux représentants dans la famille Jersey. As I write my final message as president, I ponder my history with the organization and what being a part this Jersey fraternity has brought me. I have grown up within it my entire life, and it has allowed me great opportunities to travel, making so many great lifelong connections and friends along the way. Whether it was through Jersey Canada youth exchanges, WJCB exchanges, 4-H, showing, jobs or as a Jersey Canada board member, it was all made possible by great family support and the Jersey cow. The sharing of thoughts and ideas with breeders across this country and abroad has been incredibly beneficial to me as a dairy farmer and a person. In the past eight years I have learned so much from fellow board members and staff along the way. We have had smooth sailing and choppy seas, but nevertheless navigated our way through to continue the on-going success of Jersey Canada, a breed organization that continues to accelerate forward. The amount of large commercial herds across the country that have incorporated Jerseys into their farm plan is increasing and Jersey Canada registrations and membership continue to see steady growth year after year. This is showing us that, without a doubt, the Jersey breed will be very much a player in the future of the dairy industry in Canada. With a new strategic plan and a focus on customer service, extension and a progressive, diverse and driven board of directors, Jersey Canada is positioned for what we see as an expansion of the breed in this country as milk pricing, consumer trends, feed efficiency, sustainability, and the environment are at the forefront. Congratulations to the recipients of all the 2022 Jersey Canada Awards and Scholarships! You are an impressive
bunch and great ambassadors for the industry and the breed. I hope to see many of your smiling faces in Saskatchewan come April. Come to the ‘Dead Sea of Canada,’ soak away your troubles and enjoy the Land of the Living Skies as we celebrate the Jersey cow! I will close with the great quote from George Bernard Shaw: "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything" All the best, Joanne ••• Comme j’écris mon dernier message comme présidente, je pense à mon passé avec l’organisation et ce que prendre part à la fraternité Jersey m’a apporté. J’y ai grandi pendant toute ma vie et ça m’a offert de grandes occasions de voyager, de me faire des connexions durables et des amis au fil du temps. Que ce soit par les échanges jeunesse de Jersey Canada, les échanges du WJCB, le 4-H, les expositions, les emplois ou en tant que membre du conseil d’administration de Jersey Canada, tout fut possible grâce à la vache Jersey et l’appui phénoménal de ma famille. Le partage de pensées et d’idée avec des éleveurs de partout au pays et d’ailleurs m’a été incroyablement bénéfique en tant que productrice de lait et en tant que personne. Au cours des huit dernières années, j’en ai appris tellement des autres membres du conseil et du personnel. Nous avons eu des périodes de bons vents et des périodes de tempête mais nous avons passé au travers pour perpétuer le succès de Jersey Canada, une organisation de race qui continue à prendre de la vitesse. Le nombre de grands troupeaux commerciaux au pays qui ont incorporé des Jerseys à leur troupeau est
en croissance et les enregistrements et cartes de membres de Jersey Canada continuent leur ascension constante année après année. Ceci nous démontre que, sans aucun doute, la race Jersey sera un joueur dans l’avenir de l’industrie laitière au Canada. Avec le nouveau plan stratégique et la concentration sur le service au client, le service-conseil et un conseil d’administration progressif, diversifié et engagé, Jersey Canada est bien ancré pour ce que l’on voit comme une expansion de la race dans ce pays alors que le prix du lait, les tendances des consommateurs, l’efficacité alimentaire, la durabilité et l’environnement sont à l’avant-plan. Félicitations aux récipiendaires de tous les prix et bourses d’études 2022 de Jersey Canada! Vous êtes un groupe impressionnants et de grands ambassadeurs pour l’industrie et la race. J’espère voir plusieurs de vos sourires en Saskatchewan en avril. Venez à la ‘mer morte du Canada’ noyer vos problèmes et profiter de l’endroit ‘où le temps et l’espace se rejoignent’ alors que nous célébrerons la vache Jersey! I can’t express how proud we are at Jersey Canada of all you hard working breeders that keep registering year after year. You sure know how to keep us busy! This year, we saw so many more registrations come in early, taking advantage of our lower price for early registration. In 2018 when I first started, we saw 8,467 in the 0-3 months category (83%), 1,062 in the 3-6 months (10%), 570 in the 6-18 months (6%) and 59 over 18 months (1%). Compare that to 2021, with 9,523 in the 0-3 months category (86%), 969 in the 3-6 months category (9%), 562 in the 6-18 months (5%) and 52 in the over 18 months (1%). That is a 3 % increase in the 0-3 months and a 1% decrease in the next 2 categories, which means people are registering early and saving money! Some of this change is due to our
reminder program: sign up and we will send you an email to remind you to send your registrations. But most of the hard work is done by breeders who see the benefits not only of registering their animals, but also saving themselves extra work and hard-earned cash by registering their calves early. These are awarded each year to recognize outstanding interest, knowledge and achievement in the Jersey breed, as well as agriculture in general.
Elles sont décernées chaque année pour reconnaître les accomplissements, l’intérêt et la connaissance de la race Jersey et de l’agriculture en général.
Emily Deklein Mossley, Ontario Emily is in her second year of studies in the Science of Agriculture program at the University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario. Emily has been involved with Jerseys since she began 4-H nine years ago. In that time she has been crowned Jersey Princess in the Jersey Canada Youth Ambassador program, worked for Jersey Ontario on the Ontario Invitational Sale, and assisted many breeders in barns and at shows. Emily has shown her 4-H projects at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair attended shows across Ontario, leading to wins in the All On-
Emily est en deuxième année de ses études au programme de Sciences de l’Agriculture de l’université de Guelph, à Guelph, Ontario. Émilie connait les Jerseys depuis qu’elle a commencé chez les 4-H il y a neuf ans. This scholarship will benefit achieving my academic goals as it will help me to focus more on being a full-time student, learning about the information needed in all of my courses, without worrying about having a full-time job to make money for school.”

Morgan Anderson Ridgetown, Ontario Originally showing Holsteins in 4-H, Morgan was introduced to the Jersey breed when Bruce Sayles from Bridon Farms asked if she would like to show a Jersey for her 4-H calf. Four years later, Morgan has shown Jerseys at local fairs and rallies, and at both the Royal, including in 2017 where she was awarded the Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award, and the 2021 Jersey Canada National Show. Morgan is in her second year at the University of Guelph, pursuing a Food & Agriculture degree. “Growing up, I’ve always known I wanted to be a part of the agriculture industry. I developed a passion at a young age, because of where, how and who raised me. Her involvement with 4-H goes back more than a decade, attending leadership camps in Canada and the U.S.. Her academic accomplishments include an Ontario Principal’s Award for Leadership and acting as her graduating class’ co-valedictorian. Morgan continues to volunteer her time while she works towards her degree. “I chose to pursue a career in agriculture because of the abundance of opportunities that agriculture has to offer. There are many jobs related to agriculture, whether it be in an office helping farmers finance their farm, operating a drone and taking pictures of agriculture fields, or simply being a herdsman for the pig farm down the road. Myriam Ouellet Saint-Pierre-de-Lamy, Bas Saint-Laurent, Québec Myriam grew up on a Jersey / Holstein dairy farm, Ferme Ciboulette, owned by her parents Julie Gagnon and Sylvain Ouellet. Buying their first Jerseys in 2008, Ferme Ciboulette now milks 70 Jerseys and 50 Holsteins. Myriam and her parents are well known to Québec breeders, participating in shows, sales and open houses. They run a well-managed and award-winning farm, including finishing 3rd for the National Order of Agricultural Merit in 2014. Myriam and Ferme Ciboulette have shown Jerseys at local, regional, provincial and national shows, and won awards in the All Canadians and Tout Quebec competitions. “At these shows I exhibit and help prepare our Jerseys as they are definitely my favorite of both
breeds on the farm. I like being able to show off the fine qualities of the Jersey breed in the show ring. I love their curious and endearing temperament.” Her on-farm interests extend to her studies, and she is currently enrolled in a 4-year Agroeconomics degree at the University of Laval. A passion for numbers and problem-solving passed on
by her parents led her to this program, and after graduation she plans to work as an agroeconomist in an agricultural environment in the vicinity of the Capitale-Nationale or Bas-Saint-Laurent. Last summer, as part of her degree, she interned with Ferme du Sillon in Saint-Alexandre de Kamouraska, QC, gaining valuable experience with another respected Jersey breeder. “I would like to work in the field of advisory services for farmers, because I like finding solutions, helping people and working as a team. Numbers and agriculture are two passions which are linked together in my future career, and which suit me very well. There are many jobs in my field of study and my career outlook is interesting.”

Myriam et la Ferme Ciboulette ont présenté des Jerseys aux expositions locales, régionales, provinciales et nationales, remportant des prix dans les compétitions Tout Canadien et Tout Québec. « À ces expositions, je présente et aide à préparer nos Jerseys car elles sont sans aucun doute mes préférées des
deux races sur la ferme. J’aime pouvoir démonter les belles qualités de la race Jersey dans l’arène d’exposition. J’adore leur tempérament curieux et attachant. » Ses intérêts sur la ferme s’étendent à ses études. Elle est présentement inscrite dans un programme de 4 ans en agroéconomie à l’université Laval. Une passion pour les chiffres et la résolution
de problèmes, que lui ont transmis ses parents, l’on mené vers ce programme. Après ses études, elle planifie travailler comme agroéconomiste dans un environnement agricole dans la région de la Capitale-Nationale ou du Bas-Saint-Laurent. L’été dernier, faisant partie de son programme d’étude, elle a fait un stage à la Ferme du Sillon, à Saint-Alexandre de Kamouraska, QC, obtenant de l’expérience précieuse d’un autre éleveur respecté de Jerseys. « J’aimerais travailler dans le domaine de service-conseil pour les agriculteurs car j’aime trouver des solutions, aider les gens et le travail d’équipe. Les chiffres et l’agriculture sont deux passions qui sont liées à mon futur travail et qui me vont très bien. Des emplois dans mon domaine d’étude sont nombreux et ma perspective de carrière est intéressante. »

Born in a Barn; or Don’t Run With Pitchforks By Deanna Doctor I always knew I wanted to be a mother and that I always wanted a family, but like many things that I've done in my life, I never put too much thought into it. When I found myself pregnant with my first child, I was into year four of owning a restaurant, and all I remember thinking is "how do you raise a baby around all the deep fryers? Seems a little dangerous, no?” It had never even occurred to me that I could put my unborn child into a daycare or have a babysitter, I just knew that I wanted to raise them like I was raised; at home surrounded by my wild brother and sisters and busy mom and dad. Fast forward some months later, the stars aligned and my husband, my pregnant self, and my parents all moved to PEI to get back into the world of dairy. My daughter Olivia was born in November and three days later she had her first day of work in the barn. In the last five years all three of my kids have spent the first month of their lives in the barn with me, sleeping in a crib in the office during milking, or if fussy they would ride along on the milk cart as their Pepe and I moved it down the alley. As the babies grow, different challenges have arisen. They have become very accustomed to walks from our house over to the farm. The farmyard is also their Nana and Pepe's home. We all know what a beautiful place a grandparent’s home can be. Less rules and more treats can make for a very tempting opportunity to break out of the house and walk over unsupervised. Thankfully it is just a walk across the cow pasture, but we have had to remind the older two, many times, that you cannot just leave the house to go to the barn or Nana's. And that is just one of our many rules. It is incredible the number of rules you have when toddlers roam free around a farm. They know very well; at the sound of a dump truck or tractor they are to stand on the grass and start waving. We have all instilled this into their
brains on the off chance they are alone in the yard when someone pulls up. You really need to be prepared for anything. We have also been teaching that we do not run with pitchforks. They have gotten broken pitchforks, and my husband has sanded the wooden end down and ground the tips, so they are not sharp. They also know to stand in the centre alley when we are feeding out of the feed cart, and to not jump across the gutter between two cows to come talk to me during milking. I may be a little too liberal on what my kids are allowed to do on the farm, but it is very monkey-see monkey-do. They each have their own shovels and wheelbarrows to help clean the feeding allies, of which they are each given a section to do, and I expect them to be cleaned. Their sense of pride and responsibility when completing a job is pretty incredible. They have a few cows that they are allowed to wash and put milkers on, they help push piles of straw for bedding and (my personal favourite) they empty the water buckets for the calves and refill them after feeding. Raising them constantly in the barn with me also has some very funny sides to it. Olivia being in kindergarten, we were discussing words that start with ‘P’, and placenta was one of the first words she could think of. I like to think this conversation stayed at home, but I cannot guarantee she didn't recommend placenta as the ‘P’ word in class the next day. If Jackson can find a Ziplock bag laying around the house, I promise you that he will put it on his hand, lower his voice an octave and say "yaaa, I just need to breed this cow later," and will walk off looking for his coveralls. Olivia has learned to ride her bike with no training wheels in the barn, Jack has become the master of running around with his wheelbarrow, and Rizzo is exceptional at keeping everyone on their toes. As much as I like to pat myself on the back, thinking I am so great at balancing running a farm and raising my kids, I do

know that I am incredibly lucky. Not only do I usually have the option of sending the kids to Nana's when we have too much work to do or the kids are cranky, my husband is also more than willing to drop them off in the barn if they want to come over, and to pick them up early if I know it will be a long day. Raising kids on the farm really does take a village, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Née dans une grange; ou Ne pas courir avec une fourche Par Deanna Doctor J’ai toujours su que je voulais être mère et j’ai toujours voulu une famille. Mais, comme plusieurs choses que j’ai faites dans ma vie, je n’y ai pas accordé trop d’importance. Lorsque j’étais enceinte de mon première enfant, j’en étais à ma quatrième année en tant que propriétaire de restaurant. Je me souviens de m’être demandé « mais comment élève-t-on un enfant près d’une friteuse? Ça semble dangereux, non? » Ça ne m’avait pas effleuré l’esprit que je pourrais confier mon enfant à naître
à une garderie ou à une gardienne. Je savais que je voulais les élever comme je l’avais été – à la maison, entourée de mes frères et sœurs, avec un père et une mère occupés. Quelques mois plus tard, les planètes se sont alignées et mon mari, parents et moi-même enceinte, avons déménagés à l’ÎPE pour retourner dans le monde de la production laitière. Ma fille Olivia est née en novembre et trois jours plus tard, elle était à son premier jour de travail dans l’étable. Au cours des cinq dernières années, mes trois enfants ont passé le premier mois de leur vie dans l’étable avec moi, dormant dans une couchette dans le bureau pendant la traite, ou, s’ils étaient grincheux, se promenant sur le chariot alors que leur Pepe et moi le déplacions dans l’allée. À mesure que les bébés grandissaient, différents défis se sont pointés. Ils se sont habitués à la marche entre la maison et la ferme. La cour de la ferme est également la maison de leur Nana et Pepe. Heureusement ce n’est qu’une marche à travers le pâturage des vaches, mais nous avons dû rappeler plusieurs fois aux deux plus vieux qu’ils ne pouvaient pas juste quitter la maison pour aller à l’étable ou chez Nana. Et ce n’est qu’une de nos nombreuses règles. C’est incroyable le nombre de règles que vous avez lorsque de jeunes enfants se promènent librement sur la ferme. Ils le savent très bien – au son d’un camion ou d’un tracteur, ils doivent se tenir sur l’herbe et commencer à faire signe de la main. Nous avons inscrit cette règle dans leur cerveau au cas où ils seraient seuls dans la cour quand quelqu’un arrive. Vous devez être prêt à tout. Nous leur avons aussi appris à ne pas courir avec une fourche. Ils ont reçu des fourches brisées dont mon mari a sablé le man-
che et coupé les bouts pour qu’ils soient moins pointus. Ils doivent aussi se tenir au centre de l’allée lorsque nous soignons avec le chariot et de ne pas sauter le dalot entre deux vaches pour venir nous parler pendant la traite. Je suis peut-être un peu trop libérale sur ce qui est permis à mes enfants de faire sur la ferme, mais ils nous imitent beaucoup. Ils ont chacun leur pelle et leur brouette pour aider à nettoyer les mangeoires. Ils ont chacun leur section et je m’attends à ce qu’ils le fassent. La fierté et la responsabilité qu’ils ressentent lorsqu’un travail est complété est incroyable. Ils ont droit de laver et mettre les trayeuses sur certaines vaches et ils aident à pousser les piles de pailles pour la litière et (personnellement, ma tâche préférée) ils vident les seaux d’eau des veaux et les remplissent après les repas. Les élever continuellement dans l’étable avec moi peut aussi être assez comique. Olivia est maintenant au Jardin et nous nous discutions de mots qui commencent par ‘P’ et placenta fut le premier mot auquel elle a pensé. J’aime à penser que cette conversation est restée à la maison mais je ne peux garantir qu’elle n’a pas recommandé placenta comme mot en ‘P’ dans la classe le lendemain. Si Jackson trouve un sac Ziplock qui traîne dans la maison, je peux vous promettre qu’il le mettra sur sa main, baissera sa voix d’une octave et dira ‘ouais, je n’ai qu’à saillir cette vache maintenant’ et partira trouver sa combinaison. Olivia a appris à aller en vélo sans petites roues dans l’étable. Jack est maître dans la course avec sa brouette et Rizzo est exceptionnelle pour nous garder vigilants. Même si je voudrais me féliciter, pensant que je suis si bonne à gérer une ferme et élever des enfants en même temps, je sais que je suis extrêmement chanceuse. Non seulement j’ai l’option d’envoyer les enfants chez Nana lorsqu’on a trop de travail à faire ou que les enfants sont irritables, mais mon mari est aussi toujours partant pour les amener à l’étable s’ils veulent y aller ou d’aller les chercher plus tôt si ce sera une longue journée. Élever des enfants sur la ferme prend vraiment tout un village et je ne voudrais pas faire autrement.

In this article, Part 3 in our 'Perspectives in Crossbreeding' series, we speak finally to the breeders for their insights and opinions. This series, sparked by resolutions presented at the 2021 Jersey Canada AGM, is intended to provide readers with education and information regarding breeding decisions; including crossbreeding, JX and bracket animal genetics.

GARY BOWERS – LENCREST JERSEYS, QC About the Farm "Maureen and I began a 1st generation farm in 1995 milking 18 Jerseys in Coaticook, Quebec. Today we are milking in partnership with our daughter, Melissa, and son-in-law Phil Aitken. Lencrest cows are milked on two sites. The original site milks 55 cows in an older tie-stall barn and the second site milks 120 Jerseys on two Lely robots. 100% of the cows are registered but not all are 100% pure. Production runs at 7800 kgs and tank tests of 5.4 fat and 4.0 protein. 98% of the herd is GP or better." Breeding Strategy We breed for productivity, eg. kgs of fat, A2A2, strong mammary. We prefer bulls that are +1000 milk +75 Fat +8 conformation. We are using 80 % genomic sires and also keeping an eye on polled bulls. Breeding Tools We are using elevate for genomic testing, some flushing, and some sexed semen. Information Management In regard to purity, we make sure we can register at Jersey Canada. Negative Traits & Haplotypes Yes, we check haplotypes. We are not afraid to use a positive bull for genetic gain. We make sure not to use him on other carriers. Bracket Sires We use bracket sires for genetic gain. Our goal is to have two-year-olds milking 30 to 35 kg with good components. Perspectives on Purity We review all available bulls, but our goal is that our Jerseys are efficient, productive and eligible for registration at Jersey Canada.

All Jerseys are purebred. • 5ME 6 EX 16 VG 4GP • 7395 kgs 442kg F 290 kg P 245-275-258 • January 2022 milk test 24.9 kgs 6.31F 4.10 P Breeding Strategy We do our best to keep a balanced approach with a high regard for type. For production we strive for strong deviations while maintaining positive numbers for milk. We pay close attention to rumps as well. Jerseys can function and be reproductive with high pins but they are not appealing to the eye. Udder texture is our highest udder trait we pick for. After that we like a balance of strong, high, and wide attachments. Breeding Tools We use all the available tools of the industry but make all of decisions (mating, culling, picking donors, etc.) with the combination of information from each tool rather than allow one tool to dominate our approach. We also rely on our cow sense, pedigree knowledge and day to day experience with an animal to help decipher a cow’s potential in parallel with the information provided by the breed tools. Information Management & Bracket Sires Since the bracket genetics have come into play we have avoided bulls with brackets in their pedigree. We usually look all bulls up on the Jersey Canada Website to double check the information the AI companies provide us. We are still in the early days of these bulls being incorporated into our national herd book. Over time it will become increasingly difficult to avoid animals derived from bracket genetics because they will be further and further back in a pedigree. Arguably far enough back that the impurity will be bred out of the pedigree, but we will never change that it is present at some level. Negative Traits & Haplotypes We currently avoid bulls with known haplotypes but we are having discussions with our current genetic advisor as to how to integrate bulls with haplotypes into our program if they are of interest to us. We want to avoid any negative impacts while keeping in mind we are in the genetics business as well. Some customers, either nationally or internationally, have an expectation when it comes to these haplotypes in a pedigree. Regarding negative traits: Daughter fertility is our number one focus on healthy traits. All other traits are managed/mated on individual cases. Ideally, we prefer to not use a bull with health trait. On type traits; udder texture, median suspensory and udder depth are three traits we don’t compromise on. These traits are key to long living and productive cows. All other negatives are managed on a cow-by-cow bases and again, ideally we don’t want any negative traits but there always has to be a compromise. Perspectives on Purity This is a tough question. We are in the purebred business, so the knee jerk reaction is pure or bust! However, this is easier said than done. I recently read a conversation that appeared on social media that brought some perspective to the impact the JX has had on the breed. If you are looking to use the top indexing bulls in North America, you will find there is a very high percentage of those bulls that are JX. So, the impact of the other breed in their pedigree is yielding favorable genetics that appeal to AI and are being heavily used to create future generations of bull dams and bulls. JX being allowed on the paternal side of a pedigree has enabled this to happen. A JX female has limited impact compared to a bull being put in stud. This is where the great divide starts in the breed. A breeder must decide which direction to take. In my opinion, with the high relevance of JX within the top indexing bulls, it is showing us the true genetic impact the other breeds are having on the Jersey breed. So, the question might be did the Jersey breed need this influence to be relevant in today’s modern dairy environment? I personally feel we did not. The Jersey breed pre JX was flourishing worldwide on its own merits. Did we all want a few more liters of milk? Sure, but it was coming regardless. Have we used a bull with JX in a pedigree? Probably only because it was discovered after we used him. Will we use a bull with JX in a pedigree right now? No. Will we use a bull in the future

Ensuite, nous aimons un équilibre d’attaches solides, hautes et larges Outils d'élevage Nous utilisons tous les outils disponibles de l’industrie mais nous prenons nos propres décisions (accouplement, réforme, donneuses, etc.) avec le total des informations recueillies de chacun des outils plutôt que de permettre à un outil de dominer notre approche. Nous nous fions aussi à notre sens des vaches, nos connaissances de la généalogie et de notre expérience quotidienne avec un animal pour nous aider à déchiffrer le potentiel d’une vache parallèlement avec l’information fournie par les outils de la race. Gestion de l'information & Taureaux avec parenthèse Depuis que la génétique entre parenthèses est arrivée dans le jeu, nous évitons les taureaux qui ont des parenthèses dans leur lignée. Habituellement, nous étudions les taureaux sur le site internet de Jersey Canada pour contrevérifier l’information fournie par les compagnies d’IA. C’est encore récent que ces taureaux soient inclus dans notre livre généalogique national. Au fil du temps, ce sera de plus en plus difficile d’éviter les animaux dérivés de la génétique avec parenthèses car ils seront de plus en plus loin dans la généalogie. Sans doute, une fois l’impureté rendue si loin dans la généalogie, elle sera perdue dans la lignée, mais nous ne changerons jamais ce qui est présent à un certain niveau. Traits négatifs et haplotypes Nous évitons présentement les taureaux qui ont des haplotypes connus, mais nous avons des discussions avec notre conseiller génétique actuel à savoir comment intégrer des taureaux avec des haplotypes dans notre programme s’ils nous intéressent. Nous voulons éviter tout impact négatif tout en gardant en tête que nous sommes aussi dans une entreprise de génétique. Certains clients, soit domestique ou international, ont des attentes lorsqu’on parle de ces haplotypes dans une généalogie. Au sujet des traits négatifs : la fertilité des filles est notre priorité sur les traits de santé. Tous les traits sont gérables/accouplés en cas par cas. Idéalement, nous préférons ne pas utiliser un taureau avec un trait de santé. Pour les traits de conformation : la texture du pis, le suspenseur médian et la profondeur du pis sont trois traits sur lesquels nous ne faisons pas de compromis. Ces traits sont la clé de vaches productives, vivant longtemps. Tous les autres négatifs sont gérés sur une base individuelle et, encore une fois, idéalement, nous ne voulons pas de traits négatifs, mais il y a toujours un compromis Perspectives sur la pureté C’est une question difficile. Nous sommes dans une entreprise de pur-sang donc ma réaction instinctive serait pur ou rien! Par contre, c’est plus facile à dire qu’à faire. J’ai récemment lu une conversation qui est apparue sur les médias sociaux qui a apporté de la perspective au sujet de l’impact qu’a eu le JX sur la race. Si vous voulez les taureaux aux meilleurs index en Amérique du Nord, vous trouverez qu’il y a un haut pourcentage de ces taureaux qui sont JX. Donc, l’impact des autres races dans leur généalogie apporte une génétique favorable qui plait à l’IA et ils ont utilisés abondamment pour créer de futures générations de taureaux

with JX? Yet to be decided. As for now we are managing our genetics to avoid JX bloodlines. If, as a breeder, we are looking to shake up our genetics, there are other great populations of Jerseys worldwide. We have used bulls from other purebred breeding programs to diversify our genetics. With the bulls going to stud only from top indexing genetics in North America, it is concerning that purebred genetics are being passed over and deemed inferior because they can’t achieve the same high index as the JX genetics. Another driver for us as Canadian breeders is our national Jersey herd is very small when compared to our contemporaries south of the border. Studs therefore keep that market in high regard when considering bulls for stud. In conclusion, I feel JX has changed the breed, and I’m not convinced in a positive way, but that’s my opinion. It is more than likely here to stay, and we as breeders have choices, doing what is best for our own breeding programs. The freedom to make this choice is what makes our work interesting and each of our programs unique. RÉMI GUAY – FDL JERSEYS, QC About the Farm • FDL Jerseys was established in 2009 and at the time, milked around 15 cows, 50% Jersey and 50% Holsteins. In 2015 we bought neighbouring Ferme Leblond Inc. We increased the land to 300 acres and now milk 75 cows - shipping 100kg of fat on an everyday basis. In 2017 we switched to milking 100% purebred Jersey. • We bred FDL Barcelona, the former #1 genomic LPI sire; FDL Premier Belle VG87, the former #3 GLPI cow; and FDL Minister S Blessing, the former #1 conformation cow. • CDN Lactanet December 2021 FDL ranks at #5 on LPI listing and #9 Pro$ listing. • Lactanet results 2021: milk 7882kg @ 5.51% fat and 4.0% protein BCA 264-265-268 Breeding Strategy Good type with high production and low maintenance – easy marketable animals. Breeding Tools We use sexed semen on top 20% and conventional semen on the rest of the herd. There is no embryo transfer at present. We use genomic sires on all the heifers and incorporate breed leading proven sires within the herd. Information Management We are using Jersey bulls that can be registered in Canada. We prefer modern purebred Jersey cattle without being a traditional breed purist. We are not using crossbreeding as part of our breeding program. We aim to have 100% Jersey breed purity. Bracket Sires We use the best available bulls that allow progeny to be registered as purebred animals in Canada. Perspectives on Purity The FDL philosophy is to breed a modern Jersey cow with good solid type. She must be capable of consistently producing high solids for many lactations and reproduce easily, year after year. The Jersey cow is the most efficient dairy cow, and the breed needs to remain this way. The Jersey breed also needs to keep improving traits such as lactation persistency, year after year. All these traits are more important than the percentage of purity listed on the registration certificate. I like my Jersey cows to look like a modern Jersey animal and perform like a Jersey animal, offering high type and production, annual reproduction, high components, ease of management, good feet and legs, great udders, be animal welfare friendly, and remain healthy, lactation after lactation. TYLER HENDRIKS – HENDRIKS DAIRIES LTD., ON About the Farm • Total Head 210/ 95 milking. 90% Purebred • Production: 34 kg 5.1 F 3.95P 305M - 10683M 489F 404P • 12 Month BCA 373-316-371 • Pregnancy Rate - 36% Breeding Strategy Our breeding strategy is to make our herd the most profitable and sustainable it can be. We aim with every generation to improve combined fat and protein (CFP), Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and Productive Life (PL) over the last, and if there is a different trait that emerges that impacts our profitability/sustainability we will pivot our program to include it.

Avec les taureaux destinés à la reproduction provenant des meilleurs index génétiques en Amérique du Nord, c’est dérangeant de voir que de la génétique pur-sang est ignorée parce qu’elle est jugée inférieure parce qu’elle ne peut atteindre d’aussi hauts index que la génétique JX. Un autre moteur pour nous en tant qu’éleveurs canadiens est que notre cheptel national Jersey est très petit comparativement à nos collègues du sud de la frontière. Ces taureaux modifient le marché lorsqu’on considère des taureaux pour la reproduction. En conclusion, je crois que le JX a changé la race, mais je ne suis pas convaincu que ce fut positif – mais c’est mon opinion. Il est très probable que ce soit là pour rester et, en tant qu’éleveurs, nous avons des choix et nous faisons ce qui est le mieux pour notre propre programme d’élevage. Taureaux avec parenthèse Nous utilisons les meilleurs taureaux disponibles qui permettent que leur progéniture soit enregistrée comme pur-sang au Canada. Perspectives sur la pureté La philosophie de FDL est d’élever une vache Jersey moderne avec une bonne conformation solide. Elle doit être capable de produire de façon constante de hauts niveaux de solides pendant plusieurs lactations et se reproduire aisément, année après année. La vache Jersey est la vache laitière la plus efficace et la race doit rester telle quelle. La race Jersey doit aussi continuer à améliorer des traits comme la persistance de lactation, année après année. Tous ces traits sont plus importants que le pourcentage de pureté qui est inscrit sur le certificat d’enregistrement.

Breeding Tools Our farm uses genotesting to identify top and bottom females within our herd. With our team we then identify who will be bred using sexed semen and who gets bred to beef. Using DairyComp Herd Management Software and DHI testing we can track our progress to make sure that we are following the right path for our operation. We can confirm that top JPI and net merit (NM$) do in fact give the most CFP and also have the lowest average days open. We can also track our progress generation over generation to ensure we have enough emphasis on certain traits or determine if we need to increase our selection intensity. Information Management We use all genotested young sires to do our mating and assess sires every proof round. Sire info is sorted with Ian Vandenberg from GENEX Canada to find bulls that fit our goals. Bulls selected typically are top 10 JPI, and we try to use no more than two bulls, buying in larger lots of sexed semen. Negative Traits & Haplotypes We always monitor negative traits and haplotypes that are a threat to profitability, and these are all reviewed with each proof update. For some traits, such as Predicted Transmitting Ability for Type (PTAT), we are fine with having negative sires since our on-farm numbers show no correlation to CFP or productive life in our herd. Bracket Sires We do use bracketed sires. We will use the best bulls that fit our mating program whether purebred or bracketed, so long as BBR (Breed Base Representation) is greater than 94. Perspectives on Purity When looking at purity, I view anything higher than 94 BBR or higher being pure. The generation count is less scientific/accurate and I have seen loopholes within the generation counts. BBR gives a scientific hard number on how close to base breed (Jersey) the animal is. All bulls currently in use in our program are 94+. If bracketed sires had not been included in the herdbook, our herd and the breed’s forward progress would be much slower. The Jersey breed needed genetics available which could improve CFP, DPR and PL in one mating. Before, bulls would have one of those three and you would have to flip-flop generations to push forward, which is not a sustainable and attractive outlook to Jerseys compared to Holsteins. NICK ISENSCHMID – SUNNY FARM, AB About the Farm • Total herd 130 80 grade Holsteins 50 milking jerseys and 55 young stock Jersey • All Jerseys are purebred • 24 liters @ 6.1 fat • 7 ME 5E 30VG 8GP Breeding Strategy We try to breed for consistency by picking similar bulls every time to make a long-term change rather than flip flopping between traits. Usually, we like to get high type without sacrificing production. Breeding Tools We use a lot of sexed semen to grow our herd, and this year are trying to do a fair amount of embryo work, which works well because we have the grade recipes to use. Currently we do some genomic testing and are planning to increase the amount. Information Management In regard to purity, we don’t find any issue with using {6} bulls, as their calves will be fully pure when used on our cows. Negative Traits & Haplotypes We do keep an eye on haplotypes, but we aren’t afraid to use these bulls as it’s easy to manage them with genomic testing, and you can make an informed decision and not have to gamble on whether it’ll be a terminal cross or have a huge impact on those calves. Bracket Sires We’ve used Godric and Chief and had really nice calves off both. I think these bulls are too good and interesting to not use. However, we make sure the females themselves aren’t bracket animals and are purebred, thus making it easy to stay purebred and fully registered.

Perspectives on Purity I think it’s important to track and keep in mind, but I think some of these (5) and (6) bulls can be a valuable asset to our breed; bringing in new lines we wouldn’t have had before. And with modern tools at our disposal it makes it easy to utilize these bulls and minimize risk of getting away from a “pure” animal. At the same time, we recognize that other breeders have different goals so we believe the present rules of purity in our Canadian herdbook is a reasonable compromise and provide enough choices for every breeder. Breeding Tools We have been using more sexed semen each year, but still feel a need to use a large amount of conventional semen as we have a market for breeder bulls and some bulls for AI. We also do not have good luck using sexed semen on our flushes – so we still use a larger amount of conventional semen than other breeders may. We test approximately 30-40 animals each year via genomic sampling. This is primarily for some individuals that we have purchased of greater genomic values. All bulls registered in Canada require a parentage test – so we use genomic testing as a method of parentage testing to satisfy the Jersey Canada registration requirements. We are starting to look into having an A2 herd, so we are also testing for this. We have an extensive flush program in which we are flushing 4-5 donors every 8-12 weeks. We have established an excellent market for our embryos world-wide (embryos have been exported to over 36 countries). We also implant a large number of embryos so that we have more females to market within North America. Information Management We primarily select the bulls that we use based on cow family. We do not believe that we must be the first people to try a bull. We are happy to wait and see how the offspring of a bull look before we “jump on the bandwagon”. When we use young sires, we still rely on cow families,
but pay attention to his genomic numbers for fat and protein deviation, daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), and overall type traits. Negative Traits & Haplotypes We look at all traits, but are not deterred from using a bull, based solely on negative traits. We try to look at the bigger picture and use the breakdown of his genomic traits as some of the “tools in the toolbox”. We also look at JNS and JH1, but manage it based on the individual, and will not rule a bull out based on the bull’s status. Bracket Sires We will not use a bull that is not purebred Jersey. We are steadfast in the belief that we will not use a JX bull and will only look at a bracket bull if his parentage is based in Jersey bloodlines. It is our desire to milk purebred Jersey cows. It is our belief that JX bulls, even after 6 generations, still have non-Jersey blood in their immediate parentage. So, we do not believe that they are “purebred” to our personal standards. It is much like the analogy, that once you put 3 drops of black paint into a white paint can, you can never truly have “white” paint again. Perspectives on Purity We are proud of the fact that almost 100% of our herd has PROVEN traceability directly to the Jersey Island herd book, and that is what we consider “purity”.

Donc, nous ne croyons pas qu’ils sont ‘pur-sang’ selon nos normes personnelles. Jersey Moos Remembering Gord Striker Written by Ann Striker On December 8th, 2021, our beloved Gord Striker passed away peacefully at his home with Ann at his side. Quiet, kind and gentle, Gord will be fondly remembered as a farmer with a huge heart who loved his family, his cows, John Deere tractors, attending cow shows & 4H events with his granddaughters and anything that had to do with Jerseys. He loved ice cream (chocolate), fresh curd, new cheese, cold milk from the tank, oyster soup and visits with friends and farmers who shared his passions. He always enjoyed talking to breeders, going on farm and herd tours and AGM's across the province. He enjoyed yearly trips to the Royal Winter Fair, whether it was to watch his granddaughter's show calves
En souvenir de Gord Striker Écrit par Ann Striker Le 8 décembre 2021, notre bien-aimé Gord Striker est décédé paisiblement chez lui, Ann à ses côtés. Calme, gentil et doux, on se souviendra tendrement de Gord comme d’un agriculteur avec un grand cœur, qui aimait sa famille, ses vaches, les tracteurs John Deere, qui aimait assister à des expositions de vaches et de 4-H avec ses petites-filles et tout ce qui se rapportait aux Jerseys. Il aimait la crème glacée (au chocolat), les curds fraîches, le nouveau fromage, le lait froid du réservoir, la soupe aux huitres et les visites avec les amis et agriculteurs qui partageaient ses passions. Il aimait toujours parler aux éleveurs, aller à des visites de ferme et aux AGA partout
en province. Il aimait ses voyages annuels à la Foire Royal d’hiver, que ce soit pour regarder sa petite-fille présenter des veaux ou pour y passer quelques années comme veilleur de nuit pour RJ Farms. Quelques années après s’être joint au club Jersey local, il est devenu administrateur pour l’Ontario et comme le disait si bien Virginia Warwick « la seule façon d’avancer est vers le haut. » En 2005, il fut président de Jersey Ontario. Pendant plus de 25 ans, il y a eu des vaches près de Frankford. La famille Coates, les Hendersons, Stelmardon, RJF et tant d’autres ont contribué au succès de Morillonite Jerseys. Toutes ces choses et tant de gens qui donnent à Jersey Ontario et Jersey Canada le sentiment d’une magnifique famille aimante. Les dernières années de Gord ont été un peu plus calmes, remplies de temps passé avec sa famille à regarder le pay-

For over 25 years there were Jersey cows on the edge of Frankford. Coates Family, Hendersons, Stelmardon, RJF, & so many others contributed to the success of Morillonite Jerseys. All these things and many more people are the reason Jersey Ontario and Jersey Canada felt like a wonderful and loving family. Gord's final years were spent a little quieter, filled with time with his family, overlooking his childhood home & farm in a town he had spent the past 74 years in. He is deeply missed by all of us and will forever be remembered for his jokes, his belly laugh and his love for Jersey cows.

76th Annual General Meeting The 76th Annual General Meeting of Jersey Ontario took place “virtually” on February 5th, 2022. The second annual meeting to be delivered “virtually” by zoom technologies and delivered through Farm Boy Productions, Guelph, ON. More than 50 members and industry personnel joined the online session, beginning with the business portion at 10:00 a.m. Industry presentations included: • Joanne Edwards, President, Jersey Canada • Vicky Morrison, Region 9 Director, Dairy Farmers of Ontario • Neil Petreny, Chief Executive Officer, Lactanet An information Q & A session was delivered by Chris Gans, Neogen and Ian Vandenberg, Genex , and breeder testimonial by Kevin Jones, Shady Glen Farms. “Economics of Genomics: Beef on Dairy”
The information provided an introduction to Genomic testing and what that data can reveal to assist with economic decisions that can be measured on a daily basis: • which cows will produce the most milk, with the most efficiency? • which cows will be easier to get pregnant? • which cows will have long, more productive lives? • Linear traits that we can use to improve functional conformation: • teat length and placement (especially in robot settings) • stature (do we need taller cows?) • functional conformation (rump setting, legs, udder traits) The session was well received, and many questions were answered. Thank You, Jersey Cattlemen of Canada Ltd. Frank Stenger, of Enniskillen, ON formed the Jersey Cattlemen of Canada (JCC) Ltd., along with Ken Ella, Cameron Honderich, Keith Butcher, Donald McCaig, John Batty, Bert Sayles, Cecil Mortson, Albert Taylor and Ralph McKenzie in May 1970. The objective of the organization was to promote and market Canadian Jersey cattle domestically and globally. Through the dedication, passion and integrity of the 30 directors and three secretaries over more 51 years, the JCC established a reputation for fairness and honesty. The JCC became the trusted source for breeders to source Canadian Jersey cattle, particularly new to the breed producers and the international buyer. JCC put Canadian Jerseys on the map and created global demand for the
Canadian “Little Brown Cow”. Many changes have affected the marketing of cattle since the inception of JCC in 1970. With the continued change and evolution of the cattle export industry the shareholders of JCC, with great care and consideration, made the decision to dissolve the corporation and disperse the assets across the four Jersey regional associations in Canada. Jersey Ontario would like to express its’ sincerest gratitude for the very generous donation received from JCC. JCC has requested that these funds be earmarked for continued promotion, marketing and extension services that will continue the legacy of the Canadian Jersey breed and the Jersey Cattlemen of Canada. Jersey Management Symposium Jersey Ontario is pleased to announce the 2022 Jersey Management Symposium, to take place Saturday March 26th, 2022, at the Otonobee Inn, Peterborough, Ontario, beginning at 10:00 am., and will be held in conjunction with Kawartha and area barn tours and the Jersey Ontario Awards Banquet on March 25th. The Jersey Cattlemen of Canada Ltd was originally established as an export company and was registered as a corporation since May 1970. Unitl recently, the Jersey Cattlemen of Canada Ltd had mostly been involved in the domestic market. A great deal of time, work and passion went into the Jersey Cattlemen of Canada by the field people who served on the board over the last 51 years. The goal of the JCC was to promote and market the Jersey breed in a fair and honest manner and to be a trusted source for people purchasing Jersey cattle, especially new breeders. Recently, cattle marketing has evolved and after much consideration the shareholders felt it was time to dissolve the company. Jersey Atlantic would like to extend a big thank you for the very generous donation made to our organizaion. The Jersey Cattlemen of Canada is requesting that we use the funds for marketing and field work to help strengthen the Jersey Breed in our region.
