RUMINATIONS Phyllis Harrington Interim General Manager / Administrator, Jersey Canada 2020 started with the same energy and setting of goals and expectations as previous years, but then came March with a very different message. This message was delivered to all with no distinction for wealth, race or culture. We are all seeing a significant change in our lives which will impact how we proceed into the future.

I have always been proud of Canadian agriculture, having come from a farming background, and now even more so. It has been brought to my attention, through phone calls and conversations, that right now the safest place to be living is on a farm. The freedom to walk, the freedom to continue working, the freedom to make a difference. There have been many protocols put into place regarding health and safety, and although these have been a challenge and expense to enact, they provide a safe and healthy environment during this time. Canadians are fortunate to have our own food basket right in our own back yard. This highlights the importance and the opportunities in agricultural, ensuring we can provide the products we need within our own borders.

Many of you in conversation have stated that farm life has not changed. The routine of looking after animals or fields for the many crops we produce continues daily. Isolation has always been a part of your life style. Again, more opportunities come to mind, with families no longer away at school, attending sports functions or meetings, this allows everyone to become involved on the farm, no matter

what age. It is also a time for reflection for all members in the family to evaluate what is needed, how they can contribute to catch up on work that was put to the side, develop new processes to find efficiencies, or just enjoy family time and appreciate each other.

Looking to the future, we will all continue to make changes in our lives. Foremost will be health and safety, along with revisiting what is a priority, what is a luxury and what is a necessity. I think we can all agree that health and food are on the top of the list, and thank goodness for our Canadian farmers in every sector.

••• L’année 2020 a débuté avec la même énergie et les mêmes buts fixés que les années précédentes. Puis mars est arrivé, apportant un message très différent.

Ce message fut livré à tous, sans faire de distinction de richesse, de race ou de culture. Nous voyons tous des changements significatifs dans nos vies qui auront un impact sur notre avenir.

Parce que je suis issue d’un milieu agricole, j’ai toujours été fière de l’agriculture canadienne et je le suis encore plus maintenant. On m’a fait remarquer, par des appels et des conversations, que présentement, l’endroit le plus sûr est d’être sur une ferme.

On a la liberté de marcher, la liberté de continuer à travailler, la liberté de faire une différence. Plusieurs protocoles ont été mis en place en rapport avec la santé et la sécurité et, même si c’est peut-être difficile et coûteux à implanter, ces protocoles fournissent

un environnement sain et sécuritaire en ces temps difficiles. Les canadiens sont chanceux d’avoir leur panier de nourriture dans leur propre cour. Ceci démontre l’importance et les opportunités de l’agriculture, de s’assurer d’avoir les produits nécessaires au sein de nos propres frontières.

Plusieurs d’entre vous, lors de conversations ont mentionné que la vie à la ferme n’a pas changé. La routine de s’occuper des animaux et des champs pour les multiples cultures que l’on produit continue quotidiennement. L’isolement a toujours fait partie de notre style de vie.

Encore une fois, plusieurs opportunités se pointent car les enfants ne sont plus à l’école, ne participent plus à des sports organisés ou des rencontres. Tout le monde peut participer aux travaux de la ferme, peu importe leur âge. C’est aussi un temps de réflexion pour tous les membres de la famille pour évaluer ce qui est nécessaire, comment chacun peut contribuer à rattraper les travaux qui ont été mis de côté, à développer de nouveaux processus plus efficaces ou simplement profiter du temps en famille et de l’apprécier.

Dans l’avenir, nous continuerons à faire des changements dans nos vies. Le plus important sera la santé et la sécurité tout en réfléchissant à ce qui est une priorité, ce qui est un luxe et ce qui est une nécessité. Je pense que nous pourrons tous être d’accord pour dire que la santé et la nourriture vient en haut de liste et nous sommes reconnais pour les agriculteurs canadiens de tous les secteurs.

COVID IN/À GUELPH Rachel Quesnel Shilletto Customer Service / service à la clientèle Since March, during my phone conversations with Jersey Canada clients, I have been asked “How is things going in Guelph?”. I must admit that the office is rather quiet even if our team is small, we are realizing more than ever how many interactions we have every day between myself, Jacob and Phyllis. The exchange of ideas is the most common interaction.

But what we’ve especially noticed is the lack of traffic either from cars, buses and / or pedestrians. Mornings no longer have school buses that make frequent stops. There are no more groups of children waiting for the bus at the street corner or crossing the road to get to school.

My 22-minute trip to work is cut by five minutes.

This photo is rush hour week on June 10. Traffic should be bumper to bumper which could take a few minutes to get out of the office parking lot.

In the suburbs, we can still hear the cries of joy from the children in the open air, however we are no longer seeing them in the parks and rarely on the sidewalks.

The more adventurous, who ride their bikes or scooters on the streets that no longer have traffic, have the chance to see chalk drawings on the pavement and painted rocks hidden in the gardens like some kind of treasure hunt.

At the store, you now have to wait, what would have taken you five minutes now takes you at least 40 minutes now and sometimes, it is often better to go to places where you can place an order at a

later time.

But, like all changes, there are good things that come from it. The people we meet are more warm, friendly and chatty.

We also notice that our acquaintances are speaking to each other more than ever, we are all ensuring the well-being of our families and friends In these uncertain times of change, we are beginning to revitalize family traditions that may have been lost in the rapid life of the modern world.

We wish you health and we remind you that we are available at the office.

••• Depuis mars, lors de mes conversations téléphoniques avec les clients de Jersey Canada, on me demande comment ça va à Guelph? Je dois avouer que le bureau est plutôt silencieux et tranquille même si notre équipe est petite, nous réalisons plus que jamais combien d’interactions que nous avons à tous les jours entre moi-même, Jacob et Phyllis. Les échanges d’idées sont une chose commune pour nous.

Mais ce que nous avons surtout remarqué c’est le manque de trafic soit d’automobiles, d’autobus et/ou piétons.

Les matins n’ont plus d’autobus scolaires qui font des arrêts fréquents. Il n’a plus de groupes d’enfants qui attendent l’autobus au coin ou de traverser la route pour se rendre à l’école. Mon voyage au travail de 22 minutes est raccourci de cinq minutes.

Cette photo est l’heure de point la semaine le 10 juin, habituellement le trafic est de pare-chocs à pare-chocs,ce qui peut prendre quelques bonnes minutes à sortir du stationnement.

Dans les banlieues, on entend encore les cris de joie des enfants en plein air maison ne les voit plus dans les parcs et rarement sur les trottoirs. Les plus aventureux, qui font de la bicyclette ou trottinette dans la rue qui n’a plus de trafic, ont la chance de voir des dessins en craie sur le pavé et des roches peintures cachées dans les jardins tel un genre de chasse au trésor.

Au magasin, il faut maintenant attendre, ce qui t’aurait pris cinq minutes te prendre au moins 40 minutes maintenant et des fois plus, il est souvent mieux de fréquenter les endroits où vous pouvez placer une commande à un moment ultérieur.

Mais, comme tous changements, il y a de bonnes choses qui en ressort. Les gens qu’on rencontre sont plus chaleureux, amicaux et jaseurs. On remarque aussi que nos connaissances se parlent plus que jamais, on s’assure que du bien êtres de nos familles et amis Dans ces temps incertains de changements, on commence à remettre en valeur de traditions familiales qui peuvent avoir été perdu la vie rapide du monde moderne.

On vous souhaite beaucoup de santé et on vous rappelle que nous sommes disponibles au bureau.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DU PRESIDENT John Vander Wielen President / Président, Jersey Canada This year, it is my honour to serve as President for Jersey Canada. For those of you who don’t know me well, a little backstory. I was raised on a Holstein farm in Central Ontario. In 1992, Rhonda and I were married and purchased a dairy operation from Don and Freda Ahrens and the Ahrenlea Jersey herd. Last May we dispersed the herd and I continue to own in partnership a number of the animals.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to be involved with several organizations locally, provincially and nationally; 3 years on the provincial executive at the Junior Farmers Association of Ontario, National 4-H Council Associate Director, past president of Jersey Ontario, and 6 years on the Board of Directors at CanWest DHI. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic things have changed not just at the farm level, but also for Jersey Canada. This year we were to host the World Jersey Cattle Bureau Tour & Annual Meeting, which of course had to be cancelled. I would like to personally thank all of the people who volunteered their time and skill to help organize this event; to the sponsors and also the producers who offered their farms to be included in the tour. Thank you all!

Our office has continued to be open during the pandemic. Thank you to our staff for managing and working during this challenging and extraordinary time.

They have adjusted their work schedules to not only get the work done, but to do so keeping everyone’s safety in mind.

We continue to work with our indus-

try partners to provide efficient services to all of our members Recently, we reached an agreement with Holstein Canada with them to providing field services in the Maritime provinces for Jersey Canada.

Natasha McKillop will continue providing services there for Holstein Canada as she has been doing and will now for Jersey Canada as well.

Change is constant, and operating in a different environment means that how we do things must adapt. However, the basic principles remain the same. There are two things that I would like to see happen this year. One of those is filling the General Managers position at Jersey Canada. The other is updating our strategic plan. This will allow us to set the direction for the organization for the next 3 years.

Included with this issue of the magazine you will find a copy of our Annual Report. It is usually presented at the annual meeting which this year was to have been in Quebec City in March, but like events all across the globe, had to be cancelled.

Au fil des ans, j’ai eu l’occasion de travailler avec plusieurs organisations tant locales, provinciales que nationales : 3 ans à l’exécutif provincial de la Junior Farmers Association of Ontario, administrateur associé au conseil 4-H national, ancien président de Jersey Ontario et 6 ans au conseil d’administration de CanWest DHI. À cause de la pandémie de covid-19, bien des choses ont changé à la ferme mais aussi pour Jersey Canada. Cette année, nous devions être l’hôte des visites et de l’assemblée annuelle du World Jersey Cattle Bureau qui, bien sûr, ont dû être annulées. J’aimerais remercier personnellement toutes les personnes qui ont donné de leur temps et de leur expertise pour aider à organiser cet événement, les commanditaires et les producteurs qui ont offert leur ferme pour les visites. Merci à tous!

Notre bureau est toujours ouvert pendant la pandémie. Merci à notre personnel pour la gestion et le travail pendant ces temps difficiles et exceptionnels.

Tous ont ajusté leur horaire de travail non seulement pour accomplir le travail, mais pour que chacun puisse être en sécurité.

Nous continuons à travailler avec nos partenaires de l’industrie pour fournir des services efficaces à tous nos membres.

Récemment, nous avons conclu une en-

tente avec Holstein Canada pour qu’ils nous fournissent des services sur le terrain dans les provinces Maritimes. Natasha McKillop continuera à fournir les services pour Holstein Canada comme avant et ajoutera Jersey Canada à ses tâches.

Le changement est constant et travailler dans un environnement différent signifie que nous devons adapter nos méthodes. Par contre, les principes de

base demeurent les mêmes. J’aimerais voir deux choses arriver cette année. Une d’elle est de combler le poste de Directeur général de Jersey Canada. L’autre est la mise à jour de notre plan stratégique.

Ceci nous permettra d’établir une direction pour l’organisation pour les trois prochaines années.

Dans cette édition du magazine, vous trouverez une copie de notre rapport

annuel. Il est habituellement présenté à notre assemblée annuelle qui, cette année, devait avoir lieu à Québec en mars, mais comme plusieurs événements partout au monde, a dû être annulée. Si vous avez des questions, n’hésitez pas à me contacter ou à contacter un membre du conseil ou du personnel.

Elections will be held in districts West 2, Ontario 3, and Quebec 3 for three-year terms to begin at the Annual General Meeting to be held in 2021.

An election will also be held for the district Ontario 1, to fill the remaining two year for the seat currently held by 2020 President, John Vanderweilen. This two-year term will begin at the Annual General Meeting to be held in 2021.

To be eligible to become and remain a Director, the nominee must be a member in good standing of Jersey Canada, residing in the district for which he/she is to be elected, and be the registered owner of at least ten (10) living females, registered in the Canadian Jersey Cattle Register.

Please note incumbents must be re-nominated to be eligible for re-election. Nomination for the office of Director must be made in writing, to be received at the office of the Association by the 30th day of September. To be valid, a nomination must be signed by five (5) members in good standing, not including the nominee, all residing in the electoral district, and the nominee must, by his/her signature, show willingness to act in the best interest of the corporation.

Nomination forms are available from the national office. If, on October 1st, there is only one valid nomination in the electoral district, the nominee shall be declared elected.

Pour être éligible à devenir et demeurer conseiller, le candidat doit être un membre en bonne et due forme de Jersey Canada, demeurant dans la région pour laquelle il/elle est élu(e) et être le propriétaire en titre d’au moins dix (10) femelles vivantes enregistrées dans le livre généalogique Jersey canadien.

Veuillez notez que les titulaires doivent être remis en nomination pour être éligible à la réélection. Les nominations pour le poste de conseiller doivent être soumises par écrit et être reçues au bureau de l’Association au plus tard le 30e jour de septembre. Pour être valide, une nomination doit être signée par cinq membres en bonne et due forme, sans compter la personne mise en candidature, et tous doivent demeurer dans le district électoral. La personne mise en candidature doit, par sa signature, démontrer son désire de servir les meilleurs intérêts de la corporation.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD MESSAGE DU CONSEIL The Board of directors have decided that due to existing circumstances, the membership will not be able to meet for a face to face meeting. Included in the June issue of the Canadian Jersey Breeder is the Annual Report which includes reports from the President, General Manager and Committees, and the Audited Financials. Also included is a separate listing in the magazine of the draft 2020 Jersey Canada budget.

We are currently searching out a platform to provide the membership for the adoption of the 2019 annual report and 2019 financials, plus the approval of the board actions for 2019, the auditors for 2020, and the draft 2020 budget. The meeting will be held early September 2020, giving all members an opportunity to participate. We will be working on the format for registration and voting for this meeting and all members will receive instructions once they have been verified.

At this point, we are unable to provide the opportunity to put forward any resolutions so that they may be discussed and or dealt with in the proper manner for the association.

We continue to encourage membership involvement in the association, and if you have any concerns, comments or require clarification with the annual report or financials, we would encourage you to write any of the directors or call the office.

This is your association and your input is valuable in moving forward.

Cows are fed TMR once daily consisting of haylage, high moisture grain corn, corn silage, roasted soybeans and a pelleted premix. All of the grains and forages are grown on the Sayles’ Farm.

MOVING TO A NEW HOME Recently in 2017 a new dairy barn was built consisting of a 4 row freestall barn with sand bedding and a double 10 GEA parallel parlor. Large and airy with a light peak, it can be seen at night from afar.

“Its rare to have a tank test over 100, most of the time we’re in the 60s and 70s” ATTENTION AND LONGEVITY Careful attention and the Jersey’s abilities to calve earlier than any other breed allows Spruce Avenue to breed their heifers at 1 year old. Summing up their breeding philosophy, Dean Jr. says: “We’ve never shot for the extreme.

We’ve never tried to breed extreme type. We’ve never just bred biggest milk, biggest components. We’ve just tried to keep in the middle of the road and have a nice balanced cow that gives enough milk to earn her keep, and keeps her conformation up, passes that on and has longevity.”

WEATHERING STORMS These past months have been a time of upheaval in agriculture. Spruce Avenue was among the first in Ontario chosen to dump milk at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic.

“It feels terribly wrong” Dean Jr. says.

Before that their pool price was up to 97 cents /HL. That dropped 10 cents, and as well, same as all Ontario dairy farmers, they saw a 2% quota cut on the 1st of May. As poultry farmers in a supply managed system also, they saw a 15% cut there over 2 out of 6 growing periods for the year.

But careful planning and attention have allowed the Sayles to weather these 4 months of pandemic, the same way generations before have seen near 90 years of challenges to overcome. Although, understated as usual, Dean Jr. claims ”I didn’t have to start from nothing, I just had to not screw it up.”

Dean Sr., who has mostly deferred to his son this morning, protests now to say “he’s built the barn and he’s kept it going,” not letting Dean Jr. shy away from the spotlight this time.

ATTENTION ET LONGÉVITÉ Une attention particulière et la facilité qu’ont les Jerseys à vêler plus tôt que les autres races permettent à Spruce Avenue de saillir leurs génisses à 1 an. Pour résumer leur philosophie d’élevage, Dean Jr. nous dit : « Nous n’avons jamais visé les extrêmes. Nous n’avons jamais essayé d’élever pour la conformation extrême.

Nous n’avons jamais accouplé pour avoir les plus gros volumes de lait, les plus grosses composantes. Nous avons juste essayé de rester dans le milieu du chemin et d’avoir une belle vache équilibrée, qui donne assez de lait pour être rentable, qui garde sa conformation et la transmet, qui a une bonne longévité. » FAIRE FACE AUX TEMPÊTES Ces derniers mois furent houleux pour l’agriculture. Spruce Avenue fut parmi les premiers en Ontario à être choisie pour jeter du lait au début de la pandémie de COVID-19. « Ça sonne terriblement faux » nous dit Dean Jr. Avant, le prix de leur lait était jusqu’à 97 cents/HL. Comme producteurs de poulets de chair, également sous quota, ils ont vu une coupure de 15 % sur 2 des 6 périodes de croissance pour l’année.

Mais une planification soignée et une attention étroite ont permis aux Sayles de passer au travers ces 4 mois de pandémie, de la même façon que les générations précédents ont affronté 90 ans de défis à relever. Par contre, discret comme toujours, Dean Jr dit « je n’avais pas à partir de rien, je n’avais qu’à ne pas tout bousiller. » Dean Sr., qui a plutôt laissé parler son fils ce matin, proteste en disant : « Il a bâti l’étable et l’a maintenue, » ne laissant pas Dean Jr. s’éclipser des projecteurs cette fois-ci.

In December 2007, Jacinthe Bilodeau and Daniel Poulin started their Jada Jerseys SENC adventure with quota leased from the Producteurs de lait du Québec Dairy Startup Assistance Program. The first milk pickups were made on a farm rented from Jacinthe’s father.

Since June 2019, they are owners of a farm that houses 36 milking cows and 46 kg of quota. The current barn is now too small but, with an upcoming expansion project, the farm will be able to house 80 cows in a tie-stalls and all the heifers in a free-stall barn.

Their breeding philosophy is to have a herd built on solid families that can breed solid cows, generation after generation.

The average milk production for 2019 was

9064 kg milk at 5.14% fat and 4.03% protein for BCA’s of 308-289-326. The herd classification is: 3EM, 4EX, 20VG, 8BP, 1G and the herd is 11th in Canada for GLPI and PRO$.

Two families stand out: RJF Unique Dice Margarita EX-93 3E 3* is the daughter with the best classification of Avonlea Mischief’s Magnolia SUP-EX-92 4E 12* and was nominated Canadian Cow of the Year in 2016. Margarita was bought in a sale organized by Jersey Québec and she completes the 7th generation of VG or EX cows. In 6 lactations, she has produced 55,279 kg milk at 5.35% fat and 4.16% protein. She has 5 daughters, 3 of which are classified, all 3 classified Ex-90.

Pearlmont Headline Margaret EX-90

3E 1* completes 4 generations of VG or EX cows and was also bought in a Jersey Quebec sale. She was bought to increase the production level and she succeeded spectacularly. In 6 lactations, she produced 79,268 kg milk at 4.68% fat and 3.80% protein with a Double Hall of Fame in 2017 and a Single Hall of Fame in 2018.

Her best daughter is Jada Archer Milady VG-87, number 1 in Canada for LPI for purebred cows at +2500 kg.

The cows at Jada Jerseys come from pure and modern pedigrees of solid families. This is what makes them proud of their herd!

Leur philosophie d’élevage est d’avoir un troupeau bâtit sur des familles profondes qui pourront transmettre des vaches solides de génération en génération. La moyenne de lait pour 2019 était de 9064 kilos à 5,14 % de gras et 4,03 % de protéine pour une MCR de 308-289-326.

La classification du troupeau est : 3 EM,

4 EX, 20 TB, 8 BP, 1 B et le troupeau est classé au 11e rang au Canada pour l’IPVG et le PRO$.

Les vaches de Jada Jerseys sont de lignées pures, modernes et qui proviennent de familles profondes. Voilà ce qui fait la fierté de leur élevage!

Ferme Bellaska started operating in 2008 with the help of the Producteurs de lait du Québec Dairy Startup Assistance Program. A lot of progress has been made since then! Today, the farm owns over 60 kgs of quota, the feeding system was upgraded with the addition of a vertical mixer, the integration of corn silage for cows in milk, the construction of a free stall barn for some of the heifers and a lot of small upgrades geared towards the goals of always increasing the wellbeing of animals and labour efficiency.

MIlking cows are fed with a PMR (silage mainly of alfalfa, corn silage, ground corn, soybean meal, canola meal) and an AFS to adapt the ration with commercial feed. Heifers and dry cows are fed with half-dry grass hay and top dress adapted

to their situation. The farms rents about 75 acres to produce corn silage and grass hay. Round silage bales are bought from a neighbor’s field.

On the breeding side, the balance between production and type is the goal.

The priority is to work with solid pedigrees. Emphasis is also put on solids and mammary systems. When selecting the sires, positive differentials and index for milk combined with above average type are a priority. The herd classification is 9EX-31VG-6GP, the 2019 production average was 8,633Kgs milk 472kgs fat (5.47%), 357Kg protein (4.14%). In the last two years, the Bellaska herd was among the top 5 in the province for milk average.

In the last 4 years, the herd had good performance for HPI percentile ranking twice 99 and twice 98 on the national level.

Over the years, ‘Delcy’ progeny have been favorites, completing a 16th generation of EX. The Norval Acres Rep Quinn EX90-2* family has also performed well in production and type, now with 8 consecutive generations of EX. Elmsmead Kaptain Frozie VG85-5* was a much appreciated animal, creating, with natural births, 4EX and 2VG. Finally, we cannot forget Cessnock Jade’s Betsy SUP-EX9210E-4* who was bought in the first month of the business. Betsy will be 18 years old shortly and is still active in the herd. She has produced over 110,000Kgs of milk and 10,000kgs of solids.

C’est en août 2008 que la Ferme Bellaska débute ses opérations grâce au programme d’aide au démarrage.

Aujourd’hui la ferme possède un peu plus de 60kg de quota, le système d’alimentation a été amélioré avec l’ajout d’un mélangeur vertical, l’intégration d’ensilage de maïs pour les vaches en lactation, la construction d’une étable stabulation libre pour une partie des sujets de remplacement et plusieurs petites améliorations constantes ayant toujours comme objectifs d’accroître le bien-être animal et l’efficacité du travail.

Les vaches en lactation sont alimentées avec une RPM (ensilage majoritairement luzerne, ensilage de maïs, maïs moulu, tourteau soya, tourteau canola) et un DAC permet de personnaliser la ration avec une moulée commerciale. Génisses et vaches taries sont nourries avec du foin de graminées demi-sec et reçoivent les

concentrés adaptés à leur stade respectif.

La ferme loue environ 75 acres de terre pour produire le maïs ensilage et le foin de graminées. Les balles rondes d’ensilage sont achetées au champ à un voisin.

Pour ce qui est de l’élevage, l’équilibre production-conformation est bien sûr l’objectif. La priorité est de travailler avec des généalogies profondes. Une emphase supplémentaire est mise sur les composantes et les systèmes mammaires. Pour la sélection de taureaux, des différentiels positifs, indice positif en lait et une conformation supérieure à la moyenne sont une priorité. La classification du troupeau est de 9EX-31VG6GP, la moyenne de production 2019 est de 8633Kg de lait 472kg G (5,47%), 357Kg P (4,14%). La troupeau Bellaska figure dans le top 5 provincial des meilleures moyennes de lait pour les deux dernières années. Lors des 4 dernières années le troupeau a très bien performé

au niveau des IPT en obtenant deux fois le rang centile 99 et deux autres fois 98 à l’échelle nationale.

Au fil des ans, les vaches descendantes de ‘’Delcy’’ ont été parmi les préférées complétant la 16e génération EX. La famille de Norval Acres Rep Quinn EX90-2* performe également très bien tant en production qu’en conformation avec maintenant une 8e génération EX consécutive. Elmsmead Kaptain Frozie VG85-5* a été un animal très apprécié engendrant avec des vêlages naturels 4EX et 2 TB. Finalement, difficile de passer sous silence Cessnock Jade’s Betsy SUP-EX92-10E-4* qui a été acheté dans le premier mois suivant le démarrage de l’entreprise, Betsy qui aura bientôt 18 ans est encore active dans le troupeau et a franchi le cap des 110 000Kg de lait produit et 10 000kg de solide.

Frank Stenger

He Stood The Test of Time Too

e was known by many names around the world, Frank, Mr. Frank but mostly as Mr. Canada.

While Canada has been known as an exporting country (and Frank sure helped grow that reputation!) we have a topflight reputation for making great importations too.

The arrival of the Stenger family in the late 1930’s, as our world was in turmoil, marked a great moment for agriculture in Canada.

The farming operation and Jersey herd they started way back in 1939, 81 years ago prospers today. In fact that farm and herd are going through some changes that Frank would think about carefully and then applaud. The Stenger’s always promoted their influential Enniskillen herd, situated north of the village carrying the same name, with the slogan “ The herd that has stood the test of time.”

1925 - 2020

Frank was a renaissance man with regard to his diversity of passions and knowledge and success within the agricultural arena. It is very rare that one person can be lauded as a discerning breeder of cattle, an expert marketer of his own product and the whole national breed population. Could work out the intricacies of exporting thousands of cattle and other livestock to dozens of importing countries, be a shrewd business man who knew how to grow ranks of repeat customers, be a friend and counsellor to so many of his peers and younger generations, and be beloved as a great guy along with his darling lifelove Ruth. Manage a bevy of successful auction sales at the local and national level, be a man of letters creating masterful autobiographies, a world traveller who formed fast and decidedly deep friendships with a wide range of nationalities, be a student of milk marketing and a visionary in that field and be a leader in organizations.

As someone who put in 100 times more than he took out of successful companies like Jersey Cattlemen of Canada Frank was a definite giver, far from being a taker. He was wise, kind, funny, well read, an intellectual with the common touch and at home in a pair of barn clothes and a business suit.

For all of this magnificent wealth of skills and interests Frank and his family were highly honoured. In Jersey realms the honours started with a CJCC Master Breeder award for R. Stenger and Son in 1977, less than 30 years after the herd was established, extending to Jersey Canada’s highest honour, the rare Distinguished Service Award in 1994, and twelve years later an Honorary Life Membership in the same organization in 2006. His run of high honours was capped by induction into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in November of 2011.

And then there were the less formal veneration like regular birthday cakes at each Ontario Invitational Sale because the timing was right and everybody loved Frank. Frank had been President of the Ontario Jersey Club in the mid-1960’s, a time of perhaps the great challenge the breed had ever known in its history in Canada. He continued following the fortunes of the breed and now, Jersey Ontario well into his 80’s.

And then there was the more personal side of Frank. He was the kind of person who brought a smile to everyone’s face by walking into a room, usually bearing his own impish grin. He and Ruth quickly became a “third set of grandparents” for the five Sargent children as Tim and Sharyn and their brood assumed ownership of the storied herd and farm. Pretty special when they already had doting Barkey and Sargent biological grandparents heavily engaged in their lives. How many people get to be chosen grandparents? And for those who received them his late night, out of the blue, informational phone calls with questions were never an intrusion, always a joy and a source of education.

Frank was all in with anything he set his hand to. He was visionary, super hard working, enormously friendly and humorous, wise, a perpetual motion machine who worked at a “slow and steady wins the race” pace, full of great ideas that he acted upon.

How perfect that this man who loved the land and caring for it, worked his whole life with animals, would slip modestly and quietly away in the early days of his 96th year, on Earth Day!

“ They” say that the greatest things you can leave behind are a respected reputation, a positive impression and an unintentional legacy of greatness to inspire others to think big and reach high. Frank did all of this in abundance. Everyone that knew him and learned from him was deeply blessed. In modern vernacular he now joins the ranks for the greatest of all time. He deserves to be in that hall of fame. He more than stood the test of time with flying colours!

In 2003, Jean-Noël Labbé and Marie-France Ross bought the farm from Jean-Noël’s father. The herd was then 100% Holstein. Jean-Noël fell in love with the breed after buying his first Jersey in 2003. Since then, their numbers keep growing. The herd now has 130 head made up of 31 Jerseys, 40 Holsteins and 7 Ayrshires. The classification: 10ME, 7EX, 43VG and 8GP. Jean-Noël and Marie-France have 2 children, Édouard, 14 and Florence, 13. They help with the farm chores. In the last 2 years, Jean-Noël and Marie-France gave lots of responsibilities to their kids for the care of the heifers.

Their philosophy is to have beautiful, profitable cows, with long herd life, and that are easy to work with. Their goal is to acquire more quota, fill it as efficiently as possible while working with good cows.

Their production is at 1.4 kg fat and their target is to reach 1.5 kg fat. Their Élégance herd was lucky enough to get heifers and cows that did well at the fairs The herd has won many breeder and exhibitor banners in exhibitions in Quebec. The family wishes to continue to improve the herd performance, both in production and type, and to continue to sell good animals to other breeders. It is with great pride that the family receives this award.

Jean-Noël Labbé et Marie-France Ross ont acheté la ferme en 2003 du père de Jean-Noël, Rosaire Labbé. Au tout début, le troupeau était composé d’uniquement de vaches Holstein. JeanNoël a appris à aimer la race en faisait l’acquisition de sa première Jersey en 2003.

Depuis l’acquisition de la première Jersey, le nombre cesse d’augmenter. Le troupeau est présentement composé de 130 têtes dont 31 Jerseys, 40 Holstein et 7 Ayrshires, la classification est de 10 EM, 7 EX, 43 TB ET 8 BP. Jean-Noël et Marie-France ont 2 enfants, Édouard 14 ans et Florence 13 ans. Ils participent grandement dans tous les taches à la ferme. Depuis 2 ans JeanNoël et Marie-France donnent beaucoup de place aux enfants pour prendre soins des génisses.

Leur philosophie est d’avoir des belles vaches rentables, durables et agréable à travailler. Leur objectif est d’avoir le plus

de quota, le plus efficacement possible tout en travaillant avec des bonnes vaches.

La production est de 1,4 Kg de gras et ils souhaitent atteindre 1,5 Kg de gras. Le troupeau Élégance à eux la chance d’avoir des génisses et des vaches qui performent bien dans les expositions.

Le troupeau c’est mérité plusieurs bannières d’éleveur et d’exposant dans les expositions du Québec. Toute la famille souhaite continuer d’améliorer la performance du troupeau en production et en conformation et de continuer à vendre de bonnes bêtes aux autres éleveurs. Ce fut une grande fierté pour la famille de recevoir ce prix.

“At the June 2018 version of the annual Belmont United Church beef barb-que a pair of young lads -Archie Fletcher then aged 94 and a much younger John White approaching his 80th birthday, reminisced over some of their experiences in the proving and promoting of Valleystream Silver Beacon in the late 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. June White was there ably confirming some statements and blowing the whistle on a few of the exaggerations that occasionally bubbled up.”

At sometime, possibly during the fresh strawberries, cake and ice cream someone said “We could write a book about all the things that happened...”. Well if not a book then at least a 30 to 40-year look-back and reflection with some new behind the scenes stories. Carl Fletcher, Archie’s son and part-time chauffeur, also under the influence of the fresh strawberries at the time, volunteered to be the scribe.

Thus, began a journey of kitchen table story telling and reminiscing, pilgrimages to the Jersey Canada office to research through, and binge photocopy articles and ads in the Canadian Jersey Breeder and Jersey Journal to jog memory and accuracy. New information was found through the on-line herdbook and the power of the internet – Silver Beacon is now listed in the U.S. as the all-time highest Total Production Index (TPI) son of SS Quicksilver of Fallneva -who knew?

“Beacon was born on Jan. 9, 1978. On that cold snowy morning John went to check the dry cows at 5:00 a.m. Jean was overdue by a few days. Jean had calved and when John lifted the calf’s tail for

the gender reveal it was “another damn bull calf!”

In the dairy world you are always hoping for a heifer.

Silver Beacon’s story had begun.”

Returning to the dairy world of the 1970’s, 80’sand 90’s highlighted how much has changed in the dairy world today. Back then, 30 to 50 tie stall dairy barns were the norm and cows were “slug fed” with the only TMR mixers being the cow’s tongues.

John asks,” What could those Beacons have accomplished with today’s TMR’s and feed nutrition, the ventilated barns, robotic milkers, larger stalls or comfortable bedding packs?”

It was interesting to follow the changes in genetic recording over the Silver Beacon era. Rolling base bull proofs, protein testing, Estimated Breeding Values and individual Cow Indexes were introduced during these years. Embryo transfer became a new tool for Jersey Breeders at that time.

While some things change, some things stay the same, like the impact on dairy farm profitability by international trade agreements. In 1989 the Fletchdale poet in a Jersey Breeder ad opined on the new Free Trade Deal with the U.S.;

“It’s going to be great when we get free trade.

One of the promises our Prime Minister made.

I may be wrong, but I can’t see how… …I’d rather bet on the Jersey cow!”

Running through the Silver Beacon story are themes of how the interplay of persistence, luck and hard work combine to produce results on both the cattle part of the story as well as the breeder side.

Business acumen is also revealed including the place for and value of both a handshake deal and a business contract.

The life and times of Silver Beacon included such remarkable outcomes as: • Silver Beacon being the top proven Canadian sire for composite Milk, Fat, and Protein BCA improvement for nearly seven consecutive years, • A Beacon daughter selling for $40,400 in 1985 ($90,000 in 2020 dollars!), • Beacon daughters becoming the first cows in many breeders’ herds to break the 200 and then for some the 300 BCA marks, • Based on Ontario milk pricing and without the need to buy additional quota, Beacon semen selling for $60 a vial in 1986 ($127 in 2020 dollars) would generate an increased $230 ($490 in 2020 dollars) return in milk value on just an average junior two-year old’s first lactation alone!

• A plus 4 Final Type bull whose daughters were sometimes criticized for not being “the show kind”, Beacon was named Premier Sire at both the 1989 All Ameircan Jersey show (tie) and the World Dairy Expo in Madison. This had never happened before for a bull in the same year.

• A Canadian bred bull making the proven sire line-up in a main-line U.S. bull stud and later in 1995, having Hoard’s Dairyman name Beacon as one of the top 10 Jersey “Prominent Sires of the Late 1980s in the U.S.” Developing Silver Beacon proved financially profitable for the Fletchers and Whites in many ways. Most importantly it grew deep bonds of life-long friendship and respect between the two Jersey families.

Together with the Neil Van Oirschot family he owned and proved the bull Valleystream Beacon Fame.

Carl Fletcher, le fils d’Archie et son chauffeur à temps partiel, aussi sous l’influence de fraises fraîches à l’époque, s’est porté volontaire pour en être le scribe.

C’est là qu’a commencée cette épopée d’histoires racontées à la table de cuisine, replongeant dans les souvenirs, de pèlerinages au bureau de Jersey Canada pour faire des recherches et photocopiant quantités d’articles et d’annonces dans l’Éleveur de Jersey canadien et dans le Jersey Journal pour attiser la mémoire et l’exactitude. De nouvelles informations furent trouvées dans le livre de race électronique et avec le pouvoir de l’internet – Silver Beacon est maintenant listé aux É.-U. comme le fils de SS Quicksilver de Fallneva ayant le plus haut Index Total de production (TPI) – qui l’eut cru!

John demande : « Qu’est-ce que les Beacon auraient accompli avec les RTM et la nutrition d’aujourd’hui, les étables ventilées, les robots de traites, les plus grandes stalles ou de lits plus confortables? » Révélation – la réponse pourrait être dans le livret à venir.

Il est intéressant de suivre les changements dans la façon de conserver les dossiers génétiques pendant l’ère de Silver Beacon. Épreuves de taureaux sur base mobile, testing de protéine, Valeurs estimés d’élevage et index individuels de vaches – tous ont fait leur apparition au cours de ces années. Les transferts embryonnaires sont aussi devenus un outil pour les éleveurs de Jersey pendant cette période.

Si certaines choses changent, d’autres demeurent les mêmes comme l’impact sur la ferme laitière des ententes commerciales internationales. En 1989, le poète Fletchdale a joint ce texte sur la nouvelle entente commerciale avec les États-Unis :

• Un taureau de Conformation plus 4 Final dont les filles ont parfois été critiquées parce qu’elles n’étaient « pas le genre des expositions, » Beacon a reçu le titre de Premier Taureau à l’exposition All Ameircan 1989 (ex-aequo) et à la World Dairy Expo à Madison. Ce n’était jamais arrivé à un taureau dans la même année.

• Un taureau canadien qui s’est taillé une place dans les rangs des taureaux américains éprouvés et, plus tard en 1995, le Hoard’s Dairyman a élu Beacon comme l’un des 10 meilleurs taureaux Jerseys de la fin des années 1989 aux USA (Prominent Sires of the Late 1980s in the U.S.).

Développer Silver Beacon s’est avéré profitable à plusieurs égards pour les Fletcher et les White. Le plus important est qu’il a forgé des liens de respect et d’amitié durables entre ces deux familles du monde Jersey.

In 2008, using the Dairy Farm Startup Assistance Program from Les Producteurs de lait du Québec, Claudia established her 100% Jersey herd, Ferme Jersbi.

An organic herd since 2015, it now contains 6 Ex (5 EX Multi) 22 VG, 20 GP, and 6 G. ELEGANCE JAMAICA CHESTER VG 85 (5-8), her star brood cow, contributed to the great success of his herd. A productive herd has become a reality for Claudia, with a lot of work and considerations in the breeding of her cows and the selection of heifers. Claudia finds a nursing-mother system beneficial for raising her heifers.

Claudia, along with Guillaume Dumais, formed the Jersey Chaudière Appalaches Club in 2010-2011. She has been the president for 2 years and a director. In 2017, Ferme Jersbi was the host farm for Jersey Summer Love day, a day of festivity and activities. Claudia gathered more than $ 10,000 in sponsorship for this occasion.

If you don’t find Claudia helping at her mother’s restaurant or with her father working on hay forages on local farms,she

is educating the next generation of farmers. She enjoys giving presentations in agricultural colleges on biological farming and the benefits of the Jersey breed.

She also attends many seminars an information sessions organized by different companies and organizations in the agricultural world.

Si Claudia n’est pas à aider sa mère à son restaurant ou son père aux travaux à forfait foin sur des fermes de la région, elle aime instruire la prochaine génération d’agriculteurs par des présentations dans les collèges agricoles sur la vie de ferme biologique et les avantages de la race Jersey. Elle participe à des colloques ou séances d’informations organisés par différentes compagnies ou organismes du monde agricole.

Max Kohler has been involved with the Jersey breed for many years. He was part of the youth rural program at a young age, eventually sitting on the board of directors. In 2000, he and his brother Jimmy introduced the Jersey breed to local shows that at the time had only Holsteins.

A few years later, they introduced the Jersey breed to the Victoriaville Show (l’exposition régionale de Victoriaville), which has since had a Jersey show every. Max is passionate about the breed and shows animals every year. He and his brother also founded the Club Jersey Centre-du-Québec, which he remains deeply involved in. Every year he organizes for the club, farm tours, cheese factory tours and he even organized a trip to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Max helps others discover the beautiful Jersey breed through organized activities. He was strongly involved with the Quebec Jersey AGM when it was in the region.

Passionate about genetics, he is involved with the provincial CAB. He has worked hard to progress the Jersey breed.

Max realized one of his dreams when one of his bulls was sent to an AI unit, Alpenrose MacMiller.

Max still as a lot of projects. A father of 4 children, he hopes to transmit his passion to the youth involved in the Junior Farmers.

Il faisait partie de l’organisation des AGA provinciales de Jersey Québec lorsqu’elles se tenaient dans la région.

Passionné de génétique, il est participe au CAB provincial. Il s’est souvent battu pour faire avancer la race. Max a réalisé un de ses rêves lorsqu’un de ses taureaux a été envoyé au centre d’insémination : Alpenrose Macmiller.

Max a encore beaucoup de projets.

Père de 4 enfants, il espère transmettre sa passion à ceux-ci qui font déjà partie de jeunes ruraux.

Nick Isenschmid was raised on a commercial Holstein farm. The herd, Sunny Dairy Farm, is owned and operated by the Isenschmid family who immigrated from Switzerland. Prior to Nick attending college, the herd never part took in registration, DHI or classification.

In 2014 Nick enrolled in Animal Science at Lakeland College. As a member of the Student Managed Dairy Farm as the reproduction specialist, here with Jerseys and develop a passion for them. His knowledge of Jersey reproductive traits grew as he developed the breeding program and mating guide for the herd. Through trials and studies with the Holstein/Jersey herd, Nick was able to see the benefits the Jersey breed brought to the industry and milk tank.

Nick joined Team Manitoba at the Western Canadian Classic in August of 2015, where he quickly became a vital member and mentor. He showed a Jersey heifer every year he attended and even after graduating from the program in 2018 he still sends one or two calves for a member to show.

In 2018, he was named the recipient of the Logan Chalack Memorial Award, which recognizes one individual every year for their

teamwork, mentorship, cow sense, camaraderie, and sense of fun and ambition.

Nick purchased his first Jersey in April of 2016, Unique Matt Fiji.

In October of 2018, two short years later, Nick had Jr. Champion Heifer at the Red Deer Westerner Championship Showcase Show. He also had first Jr. Breeders Herd with his first crop of homebred animals.

In the summer of 2019, Nick had his first homebred VG 2 year old, Unique Fizz Florence VG 87. By the end of 2019 Nick was exhibiting cattle internationally at World Dairy Expo in both heifer and cow classes.

In November he flushed his first cows on farm, Unique Matt Fiji and Lampada Fusion Bobby Jo. At home, Nick’s enthusiasm for purebred genetics and Jerseys has transferred to his family. Sunny Dairy Farm is catching up on registrations of all current herd mates, has started DHI and is a part of the classification

Avant que Nick aille au Collège, le troupeau n’avait jamais fais d’enregistrement, de contrôle laitier, ni de classification.

En 2014 Nick s’est inscrit en Sciences animales au Collège Lakeland. Son rôle, en tant que membre de la Ferme laitière gérée par les étudiants, était spécialiste de la reproduction. C’est là qu’il a travaillé avec les Jerseys et développé une passion pour la race.

Ses connaissances des traits reproductifs des Jerseys ont grandi et il a développé un programme d’élevage et un guide d’accou-

plement pour le troupeau. Par des essais et des études avec le troupeau Holstein/Jersey, Nick a pu voir les bénéfices que la race Jersey apporte à l’industrie et dans le réservoir à lait.

Nick s’est joint à l’Équipe Manitoba lors de la Western Canadian Classic en aout 2015, où il est rapidement devenu un membre vital et un mentor. Il a présenté une génisse Jersey chaque année où il a participé et, même après avoir obtenu son diplôme du programme en 2018, il a continué à envoyer un ou deux veaux pour que les membres les présentent. En 2018, il fut récipiendaire du Prix commémoratif Logan Chalack, qui, chaque année, reconnait un individu pour son travail d’équipe, son mentorat, son sens des vaches, sa camaraderie, son esprit enjoué et son ambition.

To date, Sunny Dairy Farm milks 15 Jerseys, with a total of 32 head in the herd. The Jersey herds classification average is VG 87 with a herd breakdown of 5EX, 7VG, 1GP, and 2 NC. Nick’s hard work, will and determination, along with his passion for the breed and industry, show how invested he is in moving forward with our Brown cow.

The 2020 Jersey Ontario Invitational Sale:

Our first ever online sale triumphs over COVID-19 After months of preparation, and despite Covid-19 challenges and restrictions, the 56th Ontario Invitational Sale successfully concluded took place as the first online sale in the history of Jersey Ontario.

2020 Youth Production Winners The 2020 Youth Production Contest is open to youth aged 10 - 22 who have purchased any calf, yearling or two year old at an Ontario Invitational Sale.

Highlights • The sale grossed over $116,000 on 47 Lots • Sale average $2,474 • Top seller “Riview Colton Glo For It” , consigned by Riview Jerseys, Carp, ON, sold for $5,950 to Syndicate Dominicana, Mallorytown, ON In early April, the OIS Committee and Jersey Ontario were faced with the challenge of continuing with or cancelling the 2020 OIS. With great consideration the decision was made to continue the sale in an electronic format in order to adhere to the new social distancing requirements.

The Committee wants to thank the volunteers and Directors who invested countless hours, the breeders who took the huge leap of faith to consign to the 2020 OIS and to the wonderful members of Jersey Ontario and breeders throughout the industry that supported today’s sale. Thank you.

Congratulations to Matthew Roszell, Wainfleet, ON, for winning the 2020 Contest. Matthew purchased Lot 33, Nuview Barnabas Billy as a Summer Yearliing at the 2018 OIS. Nuview Barnabas Billy completed her record: 2 0 313 7746 396 5.11%F 290 3.74%P (322-307-319) Matthew will receive an award of $500 and be presented at a future date with the Cecil E. Mortson Perpetual Trophy.

Second prize was awarded to Dani Karn, Woodstock, ON with her 2018 purchase, Therihof Premier Snowfall 258D, purchased at the 2017 OIS as a Senior calf.

Dani will receive an award of $400.

MARK AND MARJORIE ANDERSONWARDS CREEK, NB (COCO CREEK) Dairy farming is more than a job. We don’t go to work from 9 to 5 and then when 5 o’clock comes, just walk out the door and forget it. You can’t just lock the doors and go home. It’s on your mind 24/7. You’re on call 24/7. If you have a cow that’s sick, she’s always on your mind. You never leave your work at work. Work and home are always the same.

My job from an early point on was feeding calves and I never understood why. I grew up with the impression that I was the least favourite child because taking care of the calves was the longest and hardest job of all the chores my brothers and I were responsible for. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 30s that my dad told me that my grandfather came to him and said, “Chris is the one you want feeding calves.” I used to follow my grandfather around when he was feeding calves and doing stuff in the calf barn and he said I would see things that my brothers didn’t and say to him, “You know Grampie, that calf’s not feeling well.” So that’s why I got the job. All along I thought it was a punishment and really it was a gift of trust and responsibility.
