Skinamarink
(Directed by Kyle Edward Ball)
This film’s gotten a really polarizing reception, which really brings to mind the reactions the original Blair Witch Project got at the end of the 90’s; both are really, really slow and meticulously paced Skinamarink is a movie that will test your patience as a filmgoer; if you’re the type of person who watches arthouse, Canne film festival, Criterion Collection type films already, you’ll have no problem with this, but the average horror filmgoer that dives in expecting pure carnage and campiness will be given an absolute system shocker This is a film that absolutely will not work unless you turn off all the lights, put your phone away and really try to get invested in it
Your patience will absolutely be rewarded, however; I don’t scare that easily, but Skinamarink was easily the most unsettling thing I’ve ever watched, mostly because the insanely slow, creeping dread really starts to wear on you as you’re endlessly submerged into this fuzzy nightmare world. It really feels like you stuck a camera inside a child’s head during a bad dream; the low-quality video makes you start seeing things in the dark and wondering if something’s there you just can’t see, just like a kid waking up in the middle of the night.
Nostalgia is really the baseline of Skinamarink; the director has confirmed the film is based on his own childhood night terrors but also invites viewers to reach their own conclusions about the possible themes or why this is all happening, especially considering the film gives little answers of its own. The tension is already incredible but seeing your own personal fears and discomforts in the shadowy nothingness the film plunges you into can honestly be a bit much to bear
After all, if you stare too long into the abyss, it stares back into you.
As of writing this, Skinamarink is playing at the Fox Theatre on Queen Street and the Revue on Roncesvalles Avenue. It’s also available on Shudder
