CENTENNIAL EXPRESS

W

hile each culture's New Year celebration has its own flavour, there are certain common themes. The period leading up to New Year's Day is a time for setting things straight: a thorough housecleaning, paying off debts, returning borrowed objects, reflecting on everything we went through to be w where we are at now. We are proud to be an international community and we are mentioning some new year's traditions from other countries of origin of our NOMADIC | 24 residents.

Vienna, Austria The celebration takes place in Downtown where they there is a free live transmission of the Opera & several Stages with free concerts where people dance & Celebrate while waiting for the New Year.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

People attend to the beach where they appreciate the fireworks show or attend to the free concert with big artists. Some people get inside the sea to jump 7 waves while making a wish for the coming year.

Aguascalientes, Mexico Families get reunited for dinner and at 12 they eat 12 grapes one for each wish per month of the year, some will go outside to walk around the block with a suitcase to attract travels for the next year. Ladies wear panties color red if they want love or color yellow if they want money in their coming year.

Saint Petersburgh, Russia

In Russia, it is a bad omen to sleep through the New Year's since they believe you will be sleepy all the coming year. Russians write their wishes for next year in paper and then burn it and throw the ashes to the champagne and drink it at midnight.

GET TO KNOW THE TEAM

MEET GABI Hi Centennial Place! My name is Gabriela Guinzani, but everyone just calls me Gabi! I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I'm the Resident Assistant for the 6th floor (Go Huskies!) I'm in my 2nd year of Energy Systems Engineering and this is my 1st year as RA. I really enjoy cooking and baking different things. You might catch me going live on Instagram with a fun recipe once in a while! I'm an avid consumer of LGBTQ2+ content, so if you want a recommendation or just want to fangirl together, send me a message! I have a big family and we are all really close, so I'm constantly video chatting with them. I met my girlfriend while taking my bachelor's in Chemical Engineering and we graduated together! I also met my best friends and second family during my studies. I have a younger sister who looks older than me (at least that's what people say!) We're only a year apart and she is my best friend! If you ever see me in the hallways don't be afraid to say hi! I love chatting and making new friends!
