Building the Legacy 9

Kirk Wildman

9 chairman, Canadian Angus foundation

On behalf of the Canadian Angus Foundation, I would like to thank everyone for their interest in the 9th Building the Legacy Sale. With generous donations and a lot of leg work by a dedicated committee and staff, the sale has come together in a new and exciting online format. The Foundation continues to work on projects and commitments to Juniors, research, education and Angus history even in these unprecedented times. Though many of us have been in a bit of limbo as breeders, our young people and new breeders are starting their herds and working on their education. We feel these groups need our support more than ever and have continued with scholarships, and the Junior Ambassador, Outstanding Young Angus Breeder and Junior Stockman competitions. Foundation dollars have been leveraged to greatly enhance research projects aimed at improving Angus genetics for all members. The archives have also been hugely enhanced in recent years as we feel that without realizing our past we cannot advance our future. There are a lot of new and innovative lots in the sale this year that should appeal to many demographics. Please check them out and if you have any questions or need details clarified, contact any of the sales staff or the CAF directors. As I have said in the past, our Foundation Board of Directors takes the stewardship of your dollars very seriously and looks forward to your perusal of this year’s offering. Thanks again to our donors and buyers. Many of you have been with us since the first Building the Legacy sale and have been involved on both sides of the ledger. We hope to see many of you at the Angus events leading up to the final drop of the gavel on Saturday night!

Sheldon Kyle

President, Canadian Angus Association

The Building the Legacy fundraiser auction has been a huge success story for the Canadian Angus Foundation. Much of this success can be attributed the individuals who had the vision to establish this initiative and the generosity of our Angus fraternity. The funds raised through this auction are used to support the important work of investing in our juniors, research and education initiatives and preserving our Canadian Angus history. Traditionally this event coincides with our National Convention and Annual General Meeting. The world we live in has caused us to all become increasingly adaptive and fluid with our event planning. This year’s auction will be an online format and will coincide with the festivities planned at Angus Central for our members in lieu of our traditional convention, along with the ‘Hybrid Style’ Showdown 2021 in Olds. Please take the time to look through the items that have been generously donated in this offering, as there will be something for everyone. Thank you for your consideration and support. Remember the one who holds the last bid is the winner!!

Register with DLMS FarmGate to bid on over 80 unique items.

Funds from the auction support our archives and youth, education and research programs

How to bid online with DLMS FarmGate First time FarmGate users:

- First time users go to DLMS.ca and after scroll to find the sale page. After you have navigated to the sale page select the REGISTER button. Fill out the registration form to sign up for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions (please note due to some of the text notification features the DLMS FarmGate Timed Auction Site requires a new, separate account from your DLMS Live sale site). - After you create your FarmGate account you will receive a text message with a pin code to verify your account. - On your first log in to FarmGate Timed auctions we recommend you go to your profile and confirm your notifications are set to YES. This allows the site to send you text and/or email notifications when you are outbid and if there is activity on your favourite lots.

How to Bid in a Timed Auction

- Now that you are logged in and your account phone number/ email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are two options for bidding on the lot. - Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, where you see the amount in the first box, click the “Place Bid” button. After you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed. - Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid, enter the amount in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions, your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process.

4

Building the Legacy

Example of How the Max Bid Works

- If the lot has a $2,000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3,500 into the system, the computer will bid $2,100 for you but if someone else bids $2,200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2,300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3,500. If another bidder is on at $3,600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if two max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other.

Watch List Feature

If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch without having to scroll through the entire list you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button. Clicking this “watchlist” icon adds that item to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site.

What is Racehorse Style Close?

Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone into extended bidding.

How will Extended Bidding work?

When we get to the closeout end time, the clock for close extends with any bid placed after soft close time extending the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision and eliminate any one from sniping the last second bid. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in. It is recommended that you bid early in the extended bidding to keep the sale from going too long.

After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred and the clock goes to 0, the computer will declare the sale finished. Please note as the clock counts down to 0 you may see “PENDING” as the computer is confirming there are not last second bids on the network in case of poor internet connections to eliminate a last second snipe bid. The sale is not closed until the clock is listed as “ENDED”. Following the close of the sale all winning bidders will be contacted to arrange payment and delivery/pick up of your lot.

A special combination featuring none other than a direct daughter of the maternal matriarch of the SAV program, SAV Madame Pride 0075, who is the second high income producing cow in SAV history. She served the SAV program for nearly 18 years. One of her most recent sons SAV America set the new industry standard when he sold for $1.51 million in 2019. Casino was the feature bull of the 2018 Krebs Sale bringing a unique pedigree, balanced numbers and outstanding phenotype that saw success in the show ring in 2017. We can go on endlessly about the value of the Tiger daughters in our herd. They are the foundation to a superior cow herd. Miss Erica 141Z (x HF Tiger 5T) has been a consistent producer in the Hamilton cow herd… the reason she is now in the donor pen. Erica has landed herd sires into various purebred operations like Lone Oak Cattle in Iowa for $16,000, a Cowboy Up son to KS Cattle Corp (Kendall Gaboury) for $17,000, an HF Syndicate 213Z son to Kary Family Farm for $11,000 and two Showman sons this spring to Dave Woywitka for $19,000 and to Roy Mac Angus for $17,000 just to name a few. Cowboy Up 5405 needs no introduction; the progeny are probably some of the most consistent cattle ever raised at Hamilton Farms. Cowboy Up is an outlier with high performance, impressive growth and truly a breed changer. Cowboy Up can brag about producing high sellers and pick of the heifer calves which were purchased by KT Ranches and Ranch Covey Hill.

Tibbie 86G has a lot of shape, stoutness, balance, and presence topped off with impeccable feet and udder. He is an easy fleshing, eye appealing, fertile machine that is siring champions across North America. Whatever choice the buyer makes, they are sure to receive progeny that will have lots of performance, fertility, maternal strength and the “look” to take a program to the next level. 1 package of 2 embryos

The Miller Wilson breeding philosophy was rooted in the simple: do not follow trends; breed for maternal, focus on the strongest cow herd you can build and the rest will fall into place! This strategy has earned Miller Wilson a reputation for breeding champions, including the 2019 Supreme Champion of the World; 2018 Canadian Angus Show Bull of the Year; 2018 Farmfair International Supreme Champion Bull; and 2018 Canadian Western Agribition RBC Beef Supreme Champion Bull. These generous long-time supporters of the Foundation and donors to Building the Legacy are offering a choice of two embryos from the current Miller Wilson inventory or something to be produced later this year. What an opportunity to add some Miller Wilson genetics to your herd!

Genesis is the one of elite calving ease highlights of the 2020 Red Angus bull sales. He is the result of a multi-year search for a strong footed, heifer safe Red Angus sire out of an exceptional, proven cow. Genesis combines the desirable traits of fleshing ability, substance, hair quality, and maternal integrity. He stands on four excellent, dark coloured feet. The cherry on top is his proven pedigree, being a son of the ageless legend Magnum 169W crossed with possibly the best daughter of the highly maternal Copenhagen, Lakota 54B. Lakota 54B is phenotypically as intriguing of a female as you can find in any breed and she was one of the high selling red females in the U2 dispersal for $55,000. Genesis is her first son and he is positioned for greatness and will be sure to leave his mark on the industry. His 12.0 CED ranks top 4% of the breed while ranking top 15% for weaning and top 2% for YW. He is quickly proving himself to be a true curve bender.

What a great donation from Dennis and Shelly Ericson, Get-A-Long Stock Farm. Dennis always said not to buy a herd sire when you need one, but when you see one and he certainly found one in Red Geis Prime Rib coming from the great Geis breeding program. Prime Rib was the talk of the bull sale season in 1995 with his herd bull look, maternal pedigree and off-the-charts marbling and ribeye measurements. He sold for a record price of $32,800 to Get-A-Long, Brox and Champlain and proved to be the best breeding son of the legendary Premier Patriot 16. For several years his daughters were the high sellers at the Hayshaker and Red Roundup sales and his excellent daughters became his legacy. He was the heaviest used red sire in Canada for several years in a row in the late 90s until his semen became very rare. If you have been saving your favourite cow for a flush, step up and grab this opportunity to tie on to a legendary bull representing two legendary programs!

What an amazing journey this bull has taken us on: seven Grand Championships and six Supremes, including Canadian Western Agribition, Farmfair International, the IPE, Olds Fall Classic and Lloydminster Stockade Roundup; also achieving the titles of 2018 Silver Medalist and 2019 Bronze Medalist Angus Bull of North America. Racer offers both Red Angus breeders and the commercial cattleman a unique outcross pedigree. He was built on an impressive, strong boned foundation and was as deep sided and wide topped as they come. Racer’s offspring stride out with the power, correctness and confidence of their sire. They have outstanding foot and leg structure and are extremely correct and well balanced. Due to an unfortunate injury, Racer is no longer with us and semen is limited, so don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity to add his impressive phenotype and substance in a powerful, eye-appealing package to your breeding program.

Resource combines some of the performance leaders of the Angus breed in SAV Resource and SAV Harvestor as maternal and paternal grandsires. The power from this pedigree can be seen in Resource himself as he ranks atop the breed for performance traits, carcass weight and mature weight. SAV Resource progeny have continued to rank in the top of the breed for registrations over the past decade for their soundness, maternal strength and balance of power provided. Resource brings a unique pedigree to the Red Angus gene pool. As described by Lee McMillen in the 2020 sale catalogue, He is good from every angle. He is the standout bull amongst the most powerful set of herd bulls ever assembled at MRL. This son of U2 Retrospect was purchased as the lead off bull at U2’s sale in 2018. He was the complete package with calving ease and elite maternal. The best part may be his stunning SAV Harvestor dam who is the granddam of MRLA 845S matron and dam to the $20,000 MRLA New Era back in 2012 to the Six Mile program. New Era went on to be Reserve Champion Bull in Denver that next year. Pugh Farms Experience

307

We wanted to provide something unique and a bit different to Building the Legacy. It’s an opportunity to be our guest for our brand of hospitality while touring our cattle in the scenic Battle River Valley. This tour package comes with accommodations at either the South African House in Wainwright or our two-room cabin on the river. The South African House on a 1-acre treed lot in the heart of Wainwright features an inside barbecue room, outside hot tub, wooden fire sauna, hunting room and gym. Over the past 19 years the owners have decorated the house with unique African art. Our cabin was built by Jim’s grandparents and features a wood stove and four beds located a stone’s throw from the river bank. It offers the ability to disconnect with no cell phone service and a rustic feel. Supper will be provided by the Honeypot Eatery and Pub in Wainwright which has a British feel and an extensive menu of locally sourced fare or our very own Pugh Farms steaks grilled over the fire on the cabin pit. We guarantee a large amount of socializing, cattle touring and stories. Our place was established in 1910 as one of the original families in the area. We have accumulated a lot of history on the area and if you know Greg, you realize he has a passion to share stories. We breed both Red and Black Angus cattle as well as a large commercial herd among unique valleys and landscape blanketed in native grass. We can also help arrange more cattle touring stops at many of our fellow Angus breeders within 100 miles.

Beswick figurines are antique collectibles. They have not been produced since the 1980s and are very rare. We have been fortunate to feature a few pieces in Building the Legacy. This bull and cow have been donated by our great Angus friend James Arnott of Coul Angus in the United Kingdom. John Beswick Ltd, formerly J.W. Beswick, was a pottery manufacturer founded in 1892 by James Wright Beswick in Longton, England. In 1969 the business was sold, and the brand John Beswick was sold in 2004. This is your opportunity to own a piece of history. All-black with a glossy finish, the Beswick Aberdeen Angus Bull and Cow are both fine examples of the Angus breed.

Hycroft Pottery Plate with Angus Bull (blue)

The unique Angus Hycroft Pottery plate is trimmed in 22K gold with a blue enhanced pattern, featuring an Angus bull as the subject. From the Rob Holowaychuk Collection and donated to us by our CAF Executive Director Belinda Wagner. Hycroft China Ltd. operated from 1955 until 1989 at the former plant site of Medicine Hat Potteries. Mayor Harry Veiner is credited with taking over the failing operation and producing sanitary ware such as toilets and sinks and their well-known dishes, such as these plates. The plant is now part of The Friends of Medalta world-class museum in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This plate is in excellent condition. Rob scoured the antique shops and garage sales of our country in search of these rare Angus plates, and Belinda has found one more to donate to Building the Legacy. 1985 World Angus Forum calendar

1985 saw the introduction of New Coke, compact discs and the first version of the Windows operating system. It was also the first time that Canada hosted the World Angus Forum, an event that is still talked about today. This commemorative 1985 calendar was set aside for Building the Legacy 2020, the 35th anniversary of this prestigious event. Whether you keep the calendar intact or remove and frame the photos, the artwork is stunning and deserves to be showcased.

“Time Out” (Framed canvas)

At the celebration of our centennial in 2005, CAA unveiled our first-ever official art: two works by Wendy Risdale. Ten years later, with very few of those prints left, we commissioned new official art. Today, all four of the originals hang on the walls at Angus Central and we are offering you the chance to own a piece of our history in one of the 2015 Red Angus ‘Time Out’ prints or the Black Angus ‘Maternal Watch’ print. Either one or both make a great addition to any collection.

INTRODUCING

THE NEW CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION’S CANADIAN BALANCED INDEX EPDs for new traits that are economically relevant are being developed and introduced to Canadian Angus members continuously. Applying EPDs for all these traits into selection and breeding decisions can be challenging. Therefore, the Canadian Angus Association has worked to develop an Economic Selection Index that includes the EPDs for all traits. Traits are weighted in the index based on their economic impact on the Canadian commercial operation.

For the commercial producer—who likely purchases bulls and thinks about EPDs on only one day of the year—it is a useful overall guide that simplifies the complexity of multiple EPDs.

Basically, indexes help producers use EPDs to balance traits. Balancing traits can be complex. Not all traits make an equal contribution to profitability, and some traits counteract each other (e.g. post-weaning growth and cow size/feed requirements). Other traits are important to a certain threshold, then there is less benefit in going any further (e.g. calving ease) or even a direct cost (e.g. milk production).

The index is expressed in terms of Canadian dollars and reflects the expected difference in profits between bulls’ progeny.

A well-constructed index can help streamline the process of selecting cattle for breeding. It is not intended to replace individual trait EPDs (which will still be available) or to tell breeders how to breed. An index can help breeders focus on cattle that will tend to be more profitable under Canadian production systems and markets. 42 8

Building the Legacy

The Canadian Balanced Index will officially be launched later this year.

For example: Bull A CBI = $250 Bull B CBI = $150 On average, progeny from Bull A will be $100 more profitable in a Canadian commercial operation than the progeny from Bull B. If you have any questions about the new Canadian Angus Association Balanced Index please do not hesitate to contact CAA’s Director of Science and Technology, Kajal Devani at kdevani@cdnangus.ca or 403-537-5604.

Please note that the EPDs listed in this sale catalogue are the product of the Canadian Angus Association AngusONE Genetic Evaluation. The AngusONE genetic evaluation for all Canadian Angus cattle, Red or Black, and American Angus cattle, was launched in 2018. There are a lot of advantages to the AngusONE genetic evaluation, including the combined Canadian Angus Association and American Angus Association data which gives the ability to calculate more accurate EPDs. Additionally, the Canadian Angus Association and American Angus Association genetic evaluation includes almost 1 million animals that have been genomically tested. AngusONE has allowed the expansion of genetic evaluations and brings EPDs for new traits that are priorities for the industry and economically relevant. The AngusONE breed averages are shown below to help you adjust to the new base. Percentile rank graphs for each animal are easy to use and available at www.cdnangus.ca. The right EPD for you will depend on your cow herd, your management, and your breeding goals. For more information on using EPDs please contact the Canadian Angus Association at 1-888-571-3580 or kdevani@cdnangus.ca. For more information about the genetics offered in this catalogue and what might best suit your breeding needs please contact the seller.
