Duck Dynasty passes the torch

Debuting on A&E in 2012, Duck Dynasty proved to be a surprise hit. Viewers fell in love with bushybearded Phil Robertson and his family, down-home tycoons thanks to the business empire built atop the Duck Commander, a duck caller he invented for hunters.

Following an 11-season run over the course of five years, Duck Dynasty said goodbye in 2017. That, however, was not the end; eight years after its cancellation, the Robertsons are back with a new iteration, Duck Dynasty: The Revival Sadly, health issues will keep the Robertson family patriarch from being part of this new series (he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in December 2024, while also struggling with a blood disease). Instead, the focus falls on Phil’s eldest son Willie and wife Korie, along with their grown children and young grandchildren, following the clan’s ongoing exploits as they all reside together in the family’s sprawling compound in rural Louisiana.

Also returning will be Phil’s wife, Miss Kay, and fan favourite Uncle Si, who will no doubt be doling out his unique brand of folksy wisdom and life lessons.

“With their dynasty expanding into more than just ducks, Willie and Korie will bring their signature humour and family fun as they grapple with mapping out the future of Duck Commander, watching the kids navigate marriage, children and businesses of their own, and passing down the family legacy,” notes the A&E synopsis.

“Going back on A&E feels a little like going back home,” Willie and Korie said in a joint statement. “We’re thankful for all who have followed along as our family has grown and expanded and can’t wait to get cameras rolling again on all our new adventures, or perhaps misadventures.”

With the Real Housewives becoming long in the tooth and the Vanderpump Rules gang staring down middle age, where will the next generation of Bravo’s reality TV stars come from? That question is at the heart of this new reality series focusing on a group of young people (including the offspring of various Bravo stars) to provide an “inside peek at the lives of a group trying to navigate the ups and downs of being young adults in New York City.” That group includes Ariana Biermann (daughter of RHOA’s Kim Zolciak-Biermann), Riley Burruss (daughter of RHOA alum Kandi Burruss), Gia Giudice (daughter of RHONJ ’s Teresa Giudice) and Brooks Marks (son of RHOSLC ’s Meredith Marks). LAST CALL FOR McCALL?

You mentioned that the Equalizer spinoff was a no-go. What about the main show?

R.B., Langley

Unfortunately, not long after announcing that a proposed spinoff led by Bosch’s Titus Welliver would not move forward, CBS also gave Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) her walking papers after five seasons. The show had been on the bubble all year amidst declining ratings and timeslot shifts, and now, alas, joins fellow crime dramas FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International on CBS’s 2025 scrap heap. Debuting in 2021, The Equalizer was a remake of the classic ’80s series about an ex-CIA agent (Edward Woodward) who becomes a do-gooder vigilante in NYC.

A HERO’S WELCOME?

Wondering what’s going on with Daredevil ? When’s it coming back?

R.E., Victoria

Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again will return for season two in March of 2026. The series wrapped season one this past April on one jawdropper of a cliffhanger, as Mayor Wilson Fisk ( Vincent D’Onofrio) effectively declared martial law in New York, imprisoning any vigilantes or other citizens with the power

to challenge his despotic authority. That left blind crusader Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and his few remaining allies scrambling to mount some form of resistance — but with such heavy hitters as Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Swordsman (Tony Dalton) locked up, the Man Without Fear was left shorthanded, to say the least.

Luckily, it’s been announced that reinforcements are on the way, as Krysten Ritter has been confirmed to reprise her fan-fave role as superpowered private eye Jessica Jones for an arc in season two.

Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) will not return for a sixth season lending her particular set of skills to New York City’s underdogs.
Krysten Ritter will finally reprise the role of Jessica Jones in season two of Daredevil: Born Again.

Ritter originated the part in 2015, leading her own eponymous Netflix series for three seasons, before it — along with fellow Netflix Marvel series Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and, yes, the original Daredevil — were cancelled, their rights eventually transferring to rival streamer Disney+.

Appearing at the Disney upfronts, Ritter enthused (via Deadline): “It is so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and [Netflix team-up series] The Defenders, and now joining the MCU. I am so excited to bring back this iconic character. Without giving too much away . . . there’s much in store for Jessica Jones — this is going to be an incredible season.”

SKELETON

CREW GETS

SLAIN?

We loved Andor. So sad it’s gone! I’m wondering now,

what’s happening with Skeleton Crew?

E.F., via email Running from December 2024-January 2025, the eight-episode Star Wars: Skeleton Crew took cinema’s most iconic space opera in a fresh creative direction, centring on a group of precocious kids who cross paths with a swashbuckling pirate (Jude Law), and embark on a life-changing, galaxyspanning adventure. Critics were thoroughly charmed, but reports indicate it actually had the lowest viewership of any Disney+ Star Wars series yet.

No official decision has been made on a second season, but in what looks like bad news for hopeful fans, pint-sized star Ryan Kiera Armstrong (who played Fern) has just been cast alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar in Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, playing a next-generation Chosen One taken under Buffy’s wing. That pilot, of course, has not even been ordered to series yet — but nonetheless, it may spell crossbones for Skeleton Crew.

I have been watching The Ed Sullivan Show faithfully on MeTV. I love seeing Wayne and Shuster, who are staples of many of the shows. Ed Sullivan would always introduce them as “Canadians, Wayne and Shuster.” Any idea how many times they appeared over the years?

I.S., Burnaby

The Ed Sullivan Show, a TV institution that ran from 1948 to 1971, was originally called Toast of the Town, but most people tuning in on Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. just referred to it by the name of its host — and in 1955 that became the official title.

Sullivan was an interesting man in his own right. Starting out as a columnist for the New York Daily News, after he made the leap to showbiz the man was often referred to as “Old Stone Face,” given that he seemed to lack humour when introducing the talent who appeared on his variety show. Time Magazine, when reviewing the series’ early days, even posed the question, “What exactly is Ed Sullivan’s talent?”

It turned out that his true genius was bringing acts to audiences that might otherwise never have been seen. Most famously, he introduced America to The Beatles. Also gracing his stage were the likes of Elvis Presley, The Supremes, Bo Diddley, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, plus an endless number of comics (Jackie Mason, Alan King, George Carlin), acrobats and plate spinners.

As for Wayne and Shuster, they appeared more than any other act — a total of 67 times — offering such famous sketches as the death of Julius Caesar (“I told him, ‘Julie, don’t go!’”).

Listen to Rick Forchuk Sundays at 7:45 a.m. on CKNW’s Weekend Mornings with Scott Shantz, and as a contributor to The Jas Johal Show on CKNW on select weekday afternoons.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew seems unlikely to land a second season.

Though initially panned by critics, Predator would go down as one of the finest action pics ever made. Naturally, it spawned an array of sequels (alas, sans Arnie) that never quite matched the creative heights achieved by the original. But in 2022,

Underworld fixer Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy) has called in favours, cracked skulls and put his own family in the crosshairs to protect his bosses, the Harrigans, from a mob war. Alas, his efforts have been scuttled at every step not just by the enemy, but by the Harrigans themselves, whose unchecked greed and pride may just be their undoing.

The first season wraps up tonight. While a second has yet to be announced,

Hardy did tell The Hollywood Reporter : “The plan is definitely to see more seasons. The question is: Does it become international? There are international elements to organized crime, which are touched on in season one — the control of drugs and ammunition and weapons and people, and all kinds of things that go through Europe and from Africa through to South America, Pakistan and the variable commodities that move around Europe.”

the franchise enjoyed a renaissance, with Hulu/ Disney+ original film Prey going back to basics, dropping the Predator in the 18th century to battle a young Comanche warrior (Amber Midthunder). Now, director Dan Trachtenberg returns to that fruitful conceptual territory with an animated flick that weaves together three tales from throughout history, as the alien menace tests its mettle against a Viking raider, a samurai in feudal Japan and a Second World War pilot.

It serves as a prelude to the next live-action sequel, Predator: Badlands, which hits theatres in November.

The Lord of the Rings’ Charlie Vickers and Bridgerton’s Yerin Ha head up this Australian limited series about a young couple who return to their Tasmanian hometown to visit an estranged, ailing family member — only to become entangled in a murder mystery tied to their own traumatic past.

A When I got the opportunity to be on Y&R [years ago], people were like, “You’re doing a lot of tests for other projects. Are you sure you wanna do a soap?” I went to university to do political science, law and society. I’d never trained as an actor. These days, when he’s not working as the pro at a low-rent golf course, “Stick” uses his particular set of skills and his wily, affable charms to hustle unsuspecting marks out of quick cash via golf-related wagers — with a little help from his curmudgeonly former caddy, Mitts (Marc Maron).

But life takes a turn once Stick walks by the driving range and lays eyes on Santi Wheeler (Pete Dager), a diamond-in-the-rough prodigy with all the talent in the world. Alas, not unlike Stick, the boy has a lot of work to do on the mental side of the game. But our hero manages to convince Santi and

his protective mother Elena (A Man Called Otto’s Mariana Treviño) to take him on as a coach and hit the road in Mitts’ RV on a quest to qualify for the big leagues — and possibly a second shot at greatness for them both.

As creator Jason Keller told Esquire: “My hope for this show is that people relate to the characters in a very real way and they see this found family struggling to get along in a way that they can relate to. It’s pretty cynical out there. There’s certainly a lot of cynical TV — and the news is rough, no matter what side of the news cycle you’re on. My hope is that this is a place where people can connect to characters and feel something, but ultimately feel good about what they’ve watched.”

Also, be sure to look out for a guest turn from Justified alum Timothy Olyphant as a sleazy former rival of Stick’s who played a key part in driving his career out of bounds.

In other news, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv try to unravel a slew of murders that seem to have been committed by something not of this world, while D’arcy and Asta try to keep Kate and Ben in the dark about a life-changing development.

Here, the British scribe invites viewers along on a luxurious mountain getaway with four of the world’s wealthiest, most influential men. Steve Carell plays the elder statesman of the group, venture capitalist Randall; Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith are feuding young tech magnates Jeff and Venis; and Jason Schwartzman is Hugo, the only nonbillionaire of the bunch, derisively nicknamed “Soup Kitchen” by the others. Stuck in tight quarters at a Utah ski lodge, egos and agendas inevitably collide

— meanwhile, back in the “real world,” a massive financial crisis unravels.

Talking with Esquire about what drew him to pen this particular story of power and depravity, Armstrong explained that, as he was doing research on tech moguls, he continually came across “a straight-up arrogance, which is both scary and comic. You know, being unaware is a key reason why people are funny . . . and arrogance is a good way of being unaware.”

Meanwhile, co-star Youssef mused: “I think these [characters] viewed themselves as nerdy underdogs. That view, which made them so successful coming up, has not been adjusted for the reality of what power they wield.”

Wednesday, 6 p.m., CNBC

The worlds of big business and professional sports intersect in this CNBC special exploring NBA superstar Stephen Curry’s offcourt endeavours through his company, Thirty Ink. The special marks a shift for the financial news network to focus on the business aspect of sports.

“In an era where everything is time shifted or time delayed, sports is the one sort of appointment type viewing — that and the live market, by the way — so you have to be engaged,” CNBC exec Max Meyers told The Hollywood Reporter. “And that has inflated the value of these franchises, and there’s a natural scarcity to them as well.

“That has brought a torrent of money from all around the world, whether it be from sovereign wealth funds, whether it be from private equity funds, whether it be from other types of Wall Street type, traditional investment houses into this space,” he added “And as a result of that, there’s a lot of money going back and forth. CNBC tells the story of money better than any network or any news outlet in all of its forms, so it made sense that we did it.”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

DUSTER

Thursday, 8:50 p.m., Crave1

QWhat appealed to you about Jim — and about this show as a whole?

AHe is a fixer for the mafia, 1972. Hey, that’s fun! He loves his job. That’s his family; he has grown up with that mafia family and he’s pretty darn happy until [FBI agent Nina Hayes] comes around and basically becomes a mirror to things that he knows inside he needs to address and has suspicions about. So, his nice, easybreezy life goes out the window with the truth of things.

But what I love about that is, inside, he is ready to grow. Having these gnawing questions he doesn’t want to answer . . . meeting Nina pulls those questions out of him. These things bring out his heart.

One of our cast members, Gail O’Grady, she nailed it. She said, “When I read the script, I want to be every character in this.”

Q

Being a “wheelman” feels like less of a job and more of a calling. What is it about Jim that drives him into that life?

A

The initial draw is he’s a natural at it. He knows how to drive like nobody’s business. That’s his kitchen. That’s where he feels most comfortable. And the thing about a vocation like working for the mafia? It’s always on the move. When you stop moving is when you get busted . . . And I love that the driving takes you between scenes, in a way. It’s a “vehicle” we use to move the show along with this kind of fun, high-powered velocity.

Q

Is there some shared DNA between Jim and your most iconic character, Sawyer from Lost — who was also a shady yet charming sorta guy?

MEMORABLE ROLES:

Following bit parts on Angel, CSI and Walker, Texas Ranger, Josh Holloway landed his signature role in 2004 — playing roguishly charming ne’er-do-well Sawyer for all six seasons of Lost. After that, he led the underrated sci-fi spy drama Colony for three years, and guest-starred as an annoyingly handsome gunslinger in one of Community ’s much-loved paintball episodes.

CURRENT GIG:

AYes. I don’t know what it is in me that keeps getting me cast for these things. Maybe I need to cut my hair — or, you know, just get honest! But no, I love playing characters that are on a journey to the light, if you will. I feel like Sawyer started in real darkness and came towards the light. Jim is a person of light in his soul — he just grew in the mafia. He has real family loyalty that’s shown when he joins Vietnam because his brother joins Vietnam; he’s gotta go protect his brother. And then, the whole reason he’s working with the government is because of this gnawing feeling and doubt that his brother was killed by [his mob bosses].

QDuring the process of immersing yourself in this role, was there anything about the 1970s that surprised you?

AI was surprised at how tight the clothes were. Sorry, but I mean, my God! Tight, not breathable, and the way that they wore the pants so high . . . I was surprised at

The San Jose native reteams with his Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams for this throwback ’70s thriller about a wheelman who reluctantly joins forces with a rookie FBI agent (Rachel Hilson) to take down his kingpin boss (Keith David) — a guy he views as a surrogate father, but who may have killed his actual brother.

the sexuality, I guess, that you feel when you put on the clothes. It was a time of being sexy, you know? And you felt like, “If I’m gonna wear this, I have to wear it.” I can’t put on my sweats and my hoodie and slouch around. This was an era of putting it out there, and people showing off their body parts and lots of skin. It was a swagger and a strut you had to have about you back then.

Q Did you feel compelled to educate yourself on the art of getaway driving?

A I learned, I did. I sent myself immediately to Rick Seaman’s driving school; Rick’s this old salty stunt driver — legendary. I, as an actor, always felt like if you’re going to play a role, then you need to have knowledge about what that person does. If it’s a cowboy, you better ride a horse, shoot a gun. If it’s a driver, you better know how to drive. If you speak Russian . . . don’t call me!

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
