At the age of 77, action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger shows no sign of slowing down, even if his efforts to keep Father Time at bay are doomed to fail. That was evident in the warts-and-all 2023 docuseries Arnold, when the former bodybuilding champ resignedly registered his disgust with the flabby “boodle” on the midsection that once hosted the world’s most impressive six-pack abs.
That attitude is at the core of FUBAR, which returns for a second season this week. Hitting Schwarzenegger’s sweet spot at the intersection of comedy and action, the series follows the exploits of his character, aging super-spy Luke Brunner, as he works with his spy daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro), both of whom had been keeping their covert espionage activities a secret from each other. Boasting a superb supporting cast (highlighted by comedian Fortune Feimster and Schwarzenegger’s True Lies co-star Tom Arnold), FUBAR ’s new season promises to up the ante. “Season two is bananas,” series creator Nick Santora tells Tudum, with Schwarzenegger adding, “It is bigger, it is better. There are more laughs. There is more of everything . . . including one more legend!”
He’s referring to new cast member Carrie-Anne Moss, with the Matrix alum playing German spy Greta Nelson — who also happens to be Luke’s ex.
“They are icons,” Santora says of Moss and Schwarzenegger. “They know how to do action, be funny and create full and engaging characters. So it was great to just sit back and watch them do their thing.”
The season picks up after the identities of Luke and his fellow agents were exposed, creating chaos. “They’re in deep dog doo-doo, for sure,” says Santora, adding, ”to keep the gross analogy going, trying to clean up dog doo-doo can be messy. In life, when you’re in a tough situation, the only way out is through.”

Special Ops: Lioness is on Netflix now. But I’d been watching it on Paramount. Did they cancel it? Did Netflix “save” it?
D.F., North Vancouver Taylor Sheridan’s CIA thriller did, indeed, recently hit Netflix, immediately scoring a place on the Top 10 chart. Yet the show remains a Paramount+ original; Paramount has simply begun licensing the reruns to other streamers in certain territories. (Sheridan’s Yellowstone and 1883 are also now on Netflix.)
Season two of the drama, which stars Zoe Saldaña as a CIA operative who oversees undercover operatives, wrapped in December. If it’s renewed for a third, you’ll get it first on Paramount+.

Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore) isn’t ready to turn in his badge and gun just yet!
I was really bummed to read in TV Week that S.W.A.T. was cancelled (again!). I don’t suppose it’s been rescued (again)?
R.N., Victoria
As previously reported, after clawing its way back from cancellation not once but twice in recent years, this action thriller was axed for a third time by CBS at the conclusion of season eight.
Luckily, while the show has not been saved, it has been spun off, with CBS ordering a sequel series titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, set to debut in the fall of 2025. Per reports, it will see top cop Hondo (Shemar Moore) coming out of retirement to whip a group of unruly S.W.A.T. rookies into shape.
As the official synopsis puts it: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a
generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
As of S.W.A.T.’s series finale on May 16, Hondo had not yet been “forced” into retirement, so we’ll have to wait and see what brings that about. Also up in the air? Which members of the good sergeant’s old squad might pop by for a guest spot. Katherine Pope, president of the show’s studio, Sony Pictures TV, assured People magazine: “There is a clear world that we’re exploring here. We’re still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favourites to be a part of it in some way.”
It was so good seeing Reid show up finally in Criminal Minds this year. Any chance he comes back full-time?
O.H., Vernon
Fans of CBS’s serial killer drama have been waiting a long while for eccentric wunderkind Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) to make an appearance on spinoff Criminal Minds: Evolution. They got their wish in episode three of the third season (currently streaming weekly on Disney+), when Spencer showed up to support former fellow profiler JJ (A.J. Cook) at her husband’s funeral.
Unfortunately, a permanent return to the Behaviorial Analysis Unit likely isn’t in the cards, as Gubler has signed up to lead CBS’s upcoming series Einstein. The offbeat procedural will centre on a reckless professor named Lew, greatgrandson of Albert Einstein, who lands in some legal hot water thanks to his “bad-boy antics.” To make amends, he agrees to help the police crack cases. That said, despite picking up the pilot, CBS has decided not to air Einstein until the 2026-2027 TV season, so Gubler may just be able to free up some time for another Criminal Minds drop-in or two.

My late grandfather, having flown for the RAF during the Second World War, was very fond of saying, whenever he saw reference to Terry Fox, “He’s as tough as that wooden-legged pilot who was one of my instructors during the war. Until Terry, I never thought I would see a man with as much grit . . . I always liked the movie!” Gramps never said anything more about “the movie,” and I always wondered who the instructor he mentioned might be.
H.R., Victoria
It’s a good bet that your grandfather was referring to Sir Douglas Bader, a highly decorated instructor and fighter pilot who, as a young man, lost both legs in a plane crash.
Despite his two prostheses (known back then as “wooden legs”), Bader was eventually recalled by the RAF in 1939, fought in the Battle of Britain and was hailed as one of the greatest British Aces of the war. He also taught a squadron of Canadian pilots the workings of the Hawker Hurricane plane, while continuing to fly bomber escorts and duke it out in dogfights over U.K. soil. Shot down and captured by the Germans on several occasions, he never backed down and escaped many times.
Bader rose to worldwide fame as the inspiration for a British-made war drama called Reach for the Sky (1956), portayed by actor Kenneth More, who also starred in such war flicks as The Longest Day (1962) and Battle of Britain (1969). You can purchase Reach for the Sky on DVD via Amazon.

Regular viewers of Knowledge Network are accustomed to seeing Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri pore over U.K. art collections in search of hidden masterpieces on a delightful little docuseries known as The Art Detectives. That show has not aired a new episode since 2022 and alas, despite boasting the same title, this is not a reboot. But it does draw us into the same fascinating world of “art, antiquities and priceless artifacts” — mixing in a little murder and grand larceny for good measure.

Together with his young constable Shazia Malik (The Lazarus Project’s Nina Singh), Mick tackles cases connected to the art world, while also grappling with the sudden reappearance of his father (Larry Lamb), a notorious forger of paintings. The show debuts Monday with two episodes. In the first, Mick and Shazia look into an art historian who was murdered in his own home, possibly over a dark family secret. In the second, the theft of a Viking artifact from a burial chamber unearths a thousand-year-old cover-up.

The fact-based saga of the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême, serves up its final course, as the young Frenchman who clawed his way from the depths of poverty to the upper echelons of 19th-century high society reaches a boiling point in his quest to push culinary boundaries — while also spying for king and country.
Ottawa’s own Melanie Scrofano first rose to fame in 2016 as the title character in quirky supernatural western Wynonna Earp She’ll look to tap into that fanbase yet again with a new series that, while not quite so playful in tone, does reside in the horror genre and, much like Wynonna, is based on an acclaimed graphic novel.
Revival casts Scrofano as Dana Cypress, a sharp-tongued small-town police officer/single mother whose life is already a bit of a mess when the recently deceased start rising from their graves. But throw out your zombie playbook, because these particular ambulatory corpses retain their memories and don’t seem to crave human flesh. They’re just like they were before . . . sans heartbeat.

they can’t remember who killed them. JAG’s David James Elliott co-stars as Dana’s father, Sheriff Wayne Cypress.
More so than straight-up horror, novel creators Tim Seeley and Mike Norton see Revival as a gritty “rural noir.” Speaking with Women Who Write About Comics in 2016, Seeley said: “I think there’s something about living in rural areas that separates us from other people, in a way that cities don’t, for all the good and the bad that entails. I also think there’s a tendency among Americans to believe that our small towns really best represent American culture . . . or our ideals, anyway. And, of course, there’s a fair amount of hypocrisy there. So, I felt like a story which was all about the connections between families and the distances between them would be best served by a small town.” Norton added: “There’s a particular sense of isolation that goes along with living in a small town. Also, the fear of being trapped.”
Natasha Lyonne reprises her Emmy-nominated role as Charlie Cale for a second round of Columbo-esque mysteries.
As with season one, we follow Charlie as she wanders the country, on the run from the mob, just trying to keep her head down. But as fate would have it, she inevitably stumbles into one kind of criminal conspiracy or another, and just can’t help but use her rare gift as a “human lie detector” to bring the guilty to justice.
With her off-kilter charm and “voice like a rusty clarinet” (as one of the bad guys so aptly puts it), Lyonne is a perfect successor to Peter Falk as the deceptively sly gumshoe, while creator Rian Johnson offers a weekly dose of the same clever plotting, tight pacing and sharp wit he gave us in Knives Out. And, once again this year, the guest/suspect list is topnotch, including John Mulaney, Rhea Pearlman, Wicked phenom Cynthia Erivo and Lyonne’s old Orange Is the New Black co-stars Taylor Schilling and Adrienne C. Moore.
On that note, episode eight premieres this week with special

guests John Cho (Star Trek) and Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets).
In recent weeks, Charlie finally got herself off the mob’s hit list; and as Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter, that will only broaden the horizons for this already thrillingly unpredictable series. “I’m always trying to make sure in the writers’ room that we’re focused on the episodic nature of the show,” Johnson said. “The thing that really makes the show work is this idea that you can watch any episode and it’ll be a complete meal and you don’t really need the context around it to enjoy it, which is how I grew up experiencing TV as a kid. I miss that form of storytelling. So, it’s about focusing on that and also not wanting to have the show be a pattern where every season a different mob boss is chasing her until the finale bossCharlie confrontation . . . wanting to break it up for the audience so that it feels like anything can actually happen in this show.”

Bryce Dallas Howard plays Kat, a 40-something London comedian who’s starting to worry she missed her chance at stardom. Then one day, she crosses paths with an undercover cop (Sean Bean) who presents a most peculiar opportunity: use her “yes, and . . .” skills to infiltrate a gang. To do so, she’ll need backup, which comes in the form of two students from her improv class, played by Orlando Bloom and Ted Lasso breakout Nick Mohammed.
All three of them find the gig invigorating — the role of a lifetime! But if they’re not careful, the phrase “I’m
dying up here” will take on an all too literal meaning.
Much as the film is a lighthearted, borderlineabsurd romp, it’s not without a few truly poignant moments. As Howard explained to Red magazine: “It’s a really touching depiction of adults finding their way. And part of how they find their way is by meeting new friends. You know, it’s not a romance. It’s a movie about friendship, basically, and trusting on and relying upon unexpected heroes.”
Behind the camera, Deep Cover boasts just as much A-list talent, directed by Tom Kingsley (of cultishly adored Britcom Stath Lets Flats) and co-written by Howard’s Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow.
Captain Jeff MacKinnon talks scouring Nova Scotia’s ocean floor for sunken treasure
QWhat is it that makes this stretch of the Atlantic worthy of a name like Death Coast? Why is it different from other waters?
AI guess it would just be the fact that we’re so exposed. We’re exposed to every single element. We’re not diving in places that you take your kids to go learn SCUBA. You’re diving in places that have claimed shipwrecks. And quite often the weather patterns, though they’ve changed considerably over the past 200-300 years, they’re worse. If it was bad 300 years ago . . . now, we have more hurricanes, we have warming water, we have ocean acidification. The whole game is different.
Q“Treasure hunter” brings to mind a certain image. But what do people misunderstand about your job?
A What people don’t understand is that there is no “shipwreck.”
There’s no wreckage. All of the wood is long since gone. So, you take the topography of land and put that underwater . . . it’s crags and bottoms and cliffs and gullies . . . you’re basically
Crave (Stream)
looking for needles in haystacks. And we only deal in shallow-water wreck sites. In the Great Lakes, the wrecks there are well-preserved because it’s fresh-water and deep. I’m dealing in the surf zone. I’m not dealing in a place where anything can be protected. Finding stuff, it’s luck of the draw.
QWhat’s the diciest situation you’ve ever found yourself in on the open water?
AOh my God, I’ve been in seas that have been 100 feet high out in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. I mean, there’ve been times that . . . you know, Gordon Lightfoot had the song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” “Does anyone know where the love of God goes? ” Well, that’s a true feeling for sailors — and that’s a feeling that I’ve had many occasions to feel! But you pull through it and then you just start another day.

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

hatever challenges might come its way, the New York theatre community manages to meet them and put on really big shows, as the continuation of the Tony Awards affirms. The 78th edition of Broadway’s annual event, presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing, will be staged at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall. Again this year, CBS and Paramount+ carry the ceremony, to be marked as usual by performances of numbers from nominated musicals, and appearances by many stars of screen and theatre as presenters. Three shows lead with 10 nominations each: Buena Vista Social Club, Death and Maybe Happy Ending
This time, the Tonys get a first-time host who’s no stranger to the ceremony: Cynthia Erivo, who won her own Tony Award in 2016 for the musical version
The Color Purple, and she was nominated again in 2023 for the play Fat
. Erivo also has a Grammy Award and a Daytime Emmy Award from her participation
The Color Purple, and she was recently back on the award trail in a major way, with many nominations
— including one for an Oscar — for her portrayal of Elphaba in the first movie to come from the musical Wicked (the second film will be released this coming holiday season).
Among the nominees are performers well known for their work in television and film, such as George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Mia Farrow (The Roommate), Audra McDonald (Gypsy, with this year’s nomination making her the most-nominated performer in Tony history with 11 bids, six of which she has won), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray), Daniel Dae Kim (Yellow Face), Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Blvd.), Sadie Sink (John Proctor is the Villain), Megan Hilty (Death Becomes Her), Darren Criss (Maybe Happy Ending), Harry Lennix (Purpose), Jeremy Jordan (Floyd Collins), Bob Odenkirk (Glengarry Glen Ross) and Justina Machado (Real Women Have Curves: The Musical ).
A special Tony for lifetime achievement will go to Harvey Fierstein, the Broadway veteran who has made enduring marks as both a performer and a writer. He won competitive Tonys for Torch Song Trilogy in 1983, later earning two more of the honours for La Cage aux Folles (1984,
for writing) and Hairspray (2003, for acting). Kinky Boots, Newsies and A Catered Affair are also among his stage writing credits, and he revised the book of Funny Girl for productions of that musical in recent years.
Special Tony honours will also be given to the performing arts-centric PBS series Great Performances, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, former Goodspeed Musicals executive director Michael Price, and the nonprofit New York theatre-transforming organization New 42 (named for the city’s 42nd Street, where the effort is centred). Actor-singer Celia Keenan-Bolger (The Visit) will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for her arts-related advocacy work.

Taking Alafair Burke’s twisty novel and turning it into a propulsive thriller for television was never going to be the challenge of The Better Sister. A book about two estranged sisters who experience the loss of a mutual loved one was a whodunit that both showrunners Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado felt would make for great television. But as they started to develop the story arc, there was an element of the series, brought to life by stars Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, that completely transcended the murder mystery. “The banter, dynamic, dysfunction, love and hate — everything that goes on between these two sisters, it’s kind of undeniable,” says Biel. “You can’t get enough of it.”
The source material, which features only the perspective of Chloe (played by Biel), offered them a solid starting point. “[In the book] you’re getting one side of the story, and that offered us a platform to go, ‘What about the rest of the world?’” says Biel. “Let’s learn
about them so we can really understand who they are.” In fact, for Banks, the murder mystery was akin to a Trojan horse that would unite characters that fundamentally needed each other. “It was a great mystery, but what we got to do was just add layer upon layer of character work,” she says. “We get to find out who [these sisters] are, what they’re bringing to it, and that was the exciting part for both of us.”
In The Better Sister, Chloe, a businesswoman with a professional and personal life that is the envy of everyone, quickly becomes juxtaposed with her older sister Nicky (played by Banks), who is a recovering alcoholic and far less interested in, or capable of, a life of structure. “When you meet these two characters,
Chloe is living in a very upscale, elite, literary media world of New York City, and Nicky, who’s in a completely different world, is struggling and up against a lot of odds,” says Biel. Despite coming from the same family, the two sisters have had two totally different experiences growing up, and some prevalent mistruths have sent them down to different paths. “What I loved about it is that these two people, who do have a lot of love for each other, are going to unravel all of these lies that they were told, which brings them together,” says Biel. “It’s an amazing arc for two really interesting female characters.”
While Banks was eager to delve into her character’s issues with addiction, the professional challenges of the role were not its emotional elements. “The challenge was more physical than anything. There was fight choreography and swimming and drowning,” she says. “Going to set every day and getting to poke at my sister, played by Jessica, that was the easy part.” For Biel, the challenge lay in doling out the mystery, piece by piece. “Playing a character who has a massive secret, hiding a past, hiding from yourself, that is definitely a professionally challenging thing to do,” she says. “There are two things going on all the time. And getting to explore sisterhood — I don’t have a sister, so that for me was a joy.”
To have two actresses like Biel and Banks leading the charge is a dream for anyone staging a production. As executive producers, the two stars had the privilege of playing around with

the material, and while Biel had initially explored playing Nicky, the fact that each landed in the roles they were meant to play was, according to Milch, not luck but skill. “You can’t imagine it any other way,” she says about the casting. “They’re both incredibly skilled
at approaching the project from a holistic standpoint and really seeing the totality of it. And I think they both then inhabited these characters. They did so much work to prepare that there is such a natural flow to how they brought these characters to life. And seeing them together, I mean, the chemistry, you can’t make that up.”
While a show about Chloe and Nicky would be engaging enough on its own, the murder mystery that it centres on was a great vehicle to bring the dysfunctional family dynamic together. “I think the whodunit is fun, engaging and exciting, and it’s a great entry point for a lot of people,” says Milch. “As a genre, the audience knows that they want to be watching that kind of show. The mystery was, to us, as important as the emotional truth of these sisters and the mystery of their past. They were symbiotic and it was crucial that they worked together — that, as you are peeling back the layers of one, you’re peeling back the layers of the other.”
That said, both Milch and Corrado could easily imagine the two sisters in other situations that are equally compelling. “We could just watch these sisters take a road trip or read the phone book or go shopping,” says Milch. “It’s so true,” adds Corrado. “The chemistry, that’s a component you can’t predict. So it’s a real gift when it happens.” ■

Since the debut of Survivor a quarter-century ago, TV reality competitions have rewarded players for mastering the art of chicanery; the popularity of Traitors, in fact, proves that viewers’ hunger for watching skilled liars in action has not waned.
Fox promises to take things to whole new levels of deceit, duplicity and dishonesty with The Snake, a
new series from Jersey Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano.
“SallyAnn brings her uniquely original voice to Fox with this fresh take on the strategy competition series and a universally appealing concept that will captivate audiences,” said network president Michael Thorn in a statement, adding, “Trust me — The Snake lives up to its name.”
Described as a “social survival of the fittest” competition, The Snake assembles 15 master manipulators plucked from a variety of persuasive
professions — ranging from a pastor to an ex-con to a lawyer to a poker player to an OnlyFans content creator — all of whom are vying for a US$100,000 cash prize.
“Each contestant must leverage their unique skills, training and powers of persuasion as they face a multitude of challenges designed to showcase the traits needed to be successful in the game,” explains the series’ synopsis.
The winner of each of those challenges then becomes the Snake, giving that player control of the “saving ceremony,” described as “an explosive, chain reaction elimination where it’s not about who wants you gone, but who is willing to save you.”
However, The Snake is about a lot more than just winning challenges — it’s actually about the ability to win over others. “The social aspect of the game never stops — connections are everything whether you’re making friends, faking friends or sparking romantic connections,” the synopsis continues, noting that promises will be put to the test during each saving ceremony as players pull out all the stops to prevent themselves being eliminated by the Snake.
While Survivor has its familiar motto — “Outwit. Outplay. Outlast.” — so too does The Snake: “Befriend, betray or be gone.”
That’s clear in the first episode. “I don’t have a developed sense of morality,” one player says in a confessional interview. When another breaks down in tears after eliminating another player, she later confesses, “I think I deserve an Oscar for that performance.”
Hosting the festivities is comedian Jim Jefferies, who offers players some crucial advice at the get-go. “Your greatest asset isn’t what you say, it’s what others believe,” Jefferies tells the contestants.
The 15 contestants are: MacLaine Funsch, an NFL cheerleader with the Indianapolis Colts from Carmel, Indiana; Devonte Kavanaugh, a professional poker
player from Los Angeles, California; Kethryn Cavender, a tech manager from New York City; Derek North, a police detective from Naperville, Illinois; Amanda Short, a lawyer from Richmond, Virginia; Bryan Sobolewski, an ex-convict from Lewisville, Texas; Jacob Buchholz, a pastor from Upland, California; Alyssa Grassie, an OnlyFans content creator from Miami, Florida; Jack Micco, a non-profit director from Austin, Texas; Mena Samara, a bounty

hunter from Moore, Oklahoma; Jordan DeJesse, a human resources director from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Cody Brewer, a bull rider from Cookeville, Tennessee; Kailee Fessock, a police officer from Hollywood, Florida; Frank Lavecchia, a makeup artist from Charlotte, North Carolina; and Brett Cobalt, a boxer from Tampa, Florida.
“I’m thrilled to be hosting The Snake, a show about making friends and faking friends,” said Jefferies in a statement. “I’ve been training for this job my whole life. Growing up in Australia, and now living in Hollywood, I’ve been around plenty of snakes.”
Interestingly, Jefferies is no stranger to lies and deception — at least when it came to hooking up. “I remember I was trying to meet girls after just moving to London. At the time, I was just a comedian working behind the bar, and that didn’t sound very impressive. So at parties, I told them I worked at the zoo because I was obviously Australian and Steve Irwin was big,” Jefferies recalled in an interview with Man of Many. “So I said I was the No. 1 specialist with giraffes in the world. And this was before the internet, so I researched a few giraffe facts so I could rattle them off at parties because women love a man who’s nice with animals.” ■

ach relationship comes with its own particularities and complications, but few have been as elusively captured on screen as the complicated bond between a mother and her adult daughter. From jealousy to pride and protectiveness, a mother’s traumas and triumphs are often echoed in her daughter as she herself grows into her womanhood.
These are the themes tackled in Echo Valley, the new drama from Encounter director Michael Pearce. The film, which stars Academy Award winner Julianne Moore as coping mother and horse trainer Kate Garrett, begins when her
adult daughter Claire, played by twotime Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney, arrives on the doorstep of her secluded home soaked in someone else’s blood.
Terrified and seeking her mother’s help, Claire’s arrival forces Kate to step away from her own all-consuming tragedy and focus on keeping her daughter safe against all odds.
And while many would assume that a mother would do just about anything to protect her child, the messier the relationship, the more one begins to question the extent to which one should become involved. Following
“These are my favourite kinds of movies: movies about relationships,” Moore told Vanity Fair. “What will people do for one another? What kind of decisions do you make? How far will you go?”
“These are my favourite kinds of movies: movies about relationships. What will people do for one another? What kind of decisions do you make? How far will you go?”
Penned by Emmy-nominated Mare of Easttown writer Brad Ingelsby, Echo Valley is equal parts drama and thriller, taking elements from true crime and fiction to create a rich tapestry between the two women. When we learn early on that Claire is an addict who has previously preyed upon her mother’s love and good will, audiences begin to get a clearer picture of the complex dynamic between the two women.
“I’ve had a lot of family members deal with addiction and then struggle with similar issues as Claire and her friends,” Sweeney shared with Vanity Fair. “I’ve
kind of had firsthand experience with it . . . But when there was love in the air in the room, you truly still felt it. The person that they are at the core, as buried as they might be, is still there.”
For what it’s worth, this kind of high-emotion thriller is hardly a new venture for director Pearce, who explored themes of parenthood and family through his shorts Madrugada and Rite before branching out into feature films such as
the 2017 family drama Beast and the 2016 sci-fi flick Encounter, which centres on a pair of young brothers relying on their father for protection during an alien invasion near their home.
But as much of Pearce’s DNA is in Echo Valley, the director admits that Ingelsby’s script is what helped him set the project off in the right direction.
“Usually I read either a script which has great characters but they’re in need
of a really compelling story, or I read very genre-driven material but the characters feel like archetypes and they’re not really developed,” said Pearce. “When I read Brad’s script, it was in the [bullseye] where I got everything that I wanted. It had these rich and textured characters, and it felt like it was a film for grown-ups.”
Although Moore and Sweeney carry the bulk of the movie on their own highly capable shoulders, many other well-known and beloved actors appear in supporting roles and brief appearances.
Irish actor and writer Domhnall Gleeson appears as criminal Jackie Lyman, while Kyle MacLachlan plays Kate’s ex (and presumably Claire’s father). Richard Garrett. Edmund Donovan, Rebecca Creskoff, Albert Jones and BAFTA winner Fiona Shaw also star. ■

New additions include The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus and Gabriel Byrne as Eve’s nemesis, the Chancellor, who leads an entire community of assassins against her.

QAfter the career you’ve had, what was it about Harry Wild that lured you in?
AI can tell you that it was a piece of magic. It was offered to me, and apparently I was the first and only person it was ever offered to. I said yes immediately. I read Harry and I went, “I know who Harry is. I could have so much fun with this. I want to grow old with Harry.” I really felt that I’d never played Harry — and I hadn’t seen anyone else ever play Harry. So, it was exciting for me because it was not generic. Really, she represents the possibilities of a woman over 50. It’s like, “Wait a minute, what is she doing?!” She’s chasing criminals. She’s started a whole new career . . . And Harry gets to be naughty. She drinks too much. When she wants a man, she just grabs one and discards him when she doesn’t want him anymore [laughs]. There’s a sort of aspirational but not practical side to Harry that makes it comedic.
Q
What was it that intrigued you about Harry’s unlikely partnership with her young mugger, Fergus [Rohan Nedd]?
AShe’s an educated intellectual and yet her partner, Fergus, is a young kid from the other side of the tracks in Dublin with no education at all . . . what’s unique is they have this amazing bond where they really help one another and learn from one another. It’s intercultural, it’s interracial, it’s intergenerational . . . We haven’t seen that kind of relationship with an older woman and a younger man that is not sexual; it’s an emotional relationship, because they care about each other, but it’s not anything else.
QWhat is it about Harry Wild as a show that stands out in the crime genre?
ASomething that comes from literature and academia, I think it’s very compelling because anyone who hasn’t studied or been to college will watch this and get snippets of something, then they go, “Really? Oh my gosh, I never thought of that.” They’ll look it up on their iPhone and go, “Wow, that’s amazing.” I think it’s actually broadening people’s intellectual capacity, in a way . . . Also, we haven’t really seen contemporary Dublin as contemporary Dublin. They do come to do Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders, but they never do actual Dublin. I think it’s very interesting to see that culture, too.
QThere are multiple iconic roles on your CV. But are there ever times where fans stop you and you’re surprised by the film or TV show they want to talk about?
AVery occasionally people will say The Scarlet Pimpernel, which I did with Ian
MEMORABLE ROLES: She’s best known as trailblazing frontier healer Michaela Quinn on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, which ran for six iconic seasons from 1993-1998. But English actress Jane Seymour’s career has spanned several decades and genres, with gigs as a “Bond girl” in 1973’s Live and Let Die, an era-crossed lover in 1980 fantasy Somewhere in Time and a lusty, scene-stealing socialite in 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers.
CURRENT GIG:
For four seasons and counting, this Emmy- and Golden Globewinner has played retired Dublin literature professor Harry Wild, who is inspired to become a private eye after she’s mugged — recruiting the mugger himself to serve as her Watson.
McKellen and Anthony Andrews. Smallville, for people who are into sci-fi. Battlestar Galactica; I was in the original first two or three episodes of that. But mostly people remember, if they’re younger, Wedding Crashers, and if they’re of any age, definitely Dr. Quinn. James Bond is perennial, of course . . . and then, Harry Wild now.
Q Just how often do you encounter Harry Wild fans compared to, say, fans of Dr. Quinn?
A
It’s amazing, it doesn’t matter where I go — because this is seen all over the world. There are now Harry fans and Dr. Quinn fans, and some of them have joined up — and if they can’t have new Dr. Quinn, they really have decided they love Harry. So, it’s been a phenomenon for me . . . I do get stopped now all the time about Harry Wild. The thing I really like is, I have women over the age of 40 or 50 who just go, “I love Harry. I wish I could be Harry!”
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
