Ithink we can all agree that Canadians’ patriotism this year has been off the charts.
When the Mango Mussolini unleashed his idiotic trade war, he assumed Canadians would cave to his bullying. Instead, each moronic mention of “the 51st state” has only increased our resolve and strengthened our unity as we keep our elbows up and embrace our national identity like never before.
For this reason, Canada Day 2025 feels more significant than usual. As we gather together on July 1 to raise our flag and celebrate our nation, we can remain both proud and grateful that we still enjoy the kind of freedom that should never be taken for granted.
Once again, CBC will broadcast coverage of Canada Day festivities throughout the nation. Focusing on the primary celebration in Ottawa while also checking in on parallel parties that are taking place in other areas of the country, it all begins at 11 a.m., concluding with the evening concert at 8 p.m.
Host Isabelle Racicot presides over the national evening show in Ottawa, headlined by Vancouver’s own Sarah McLachlan Other performers who will be taking to the stage in the capital include Coeur de Pirate, Josh Ross, Tom Cochrane, Mitsou, Roch
, Billie du Page,
, Édith Butler, TALK and Morgan Grace. Here in Vancouver, Dear Rouge and Alex Wells will perform, while Crook the Kid and Brenda Montana will be entertaining in Yellowknife. In addition, Blue Rodeo will headline the festivities in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
“More than ever, this year is the perfect opportunity to wave our flag proudly and show the world what makes us the True North strong and free,” reads a statement issued by Canadian Heritage. “The July 1 festivities will allow us to celebrate our unity and express our national pride, while affirming our sovereignty, our identity and our culture.”

The Ted Danson-led hit will return for a second season on Netflix, chronicling the goofy, heartwarming exploits of an aging widower who goes undercover to solve crimes at a retirement home. What’s more, in that second season, Danson will be joined by his real-life wife, Mary Steenburgen. As Danson teased on his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name “It’s just magical. We’re falling in love . . . My character is in love with her, and to sit there on-camera and look into your wife’s eyes — and we’re nauseatingly in love in private life — and just disappear into her eyes in front of a camera is pretty astounding.”
I’ve really loved seeing Jason Priestley on that show Wild Cards. Does he have anything else going on?
E.N., Langley
The Vancouver-born 90210 hunk has, indeed, recurred for the past two seasons on CBC’s Wild Cards, popping up as Max’s imprisoned con-man father. That show has just been renewed for another two seasons, so you can expect to see more of him there. But Priestley is also set to take
centre stage again — and in a very familiar role, to boot! Priestley completists will recall that the man spent five seasons on a Toronto-set crime dramedy called Private Eyes He portrayed Matt Shade, a former hockey player who finds an unlikely second act cracking cases after partnering up with a private detective named Angie Everett (Cindy Sampson). The show went off the air in 2021, but now it’s coming back via a revival titled Private Eyes West Coast, currently filming in Victoria. Per the official synopsis: “With the Pacific Ocean as
their backdrop and a new cast of characters joining the action, Private Eyes West Coast promises a sun-soaked, suspense-filled season. Picking up after the events of the original hit series . . . this spinoff brings back the quickwitted, sizzling chemistry, and high-stakes detective work that made Private Eyes a fan favourite across Canada and around the world.”
A premiere date has yet to be announced.

E.K., Vernon The beloved frontier novels of Laura Ingalls Wilder are, indeed, coming back to the screen. Currently shooting in Manitoba with an eye towards release in 2026, Netflix’s remake is described thusly: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale and part
origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
Newcomer Alice Halsey steps in for Melissa Gilbert as precocious young Laura, with Luke Bracey (Hacksaw Ridge) tapping in for Michael Landon as family patriarch Charles and Crosby Fitzgerald (Palm Royale) replacing Karen Grassle as mom Caroline.
“I am absolutely thrilled with the brilliant cast we have assembled,” showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a statement. “Each one of them brings something special to the Little House universe and will help make this story come alive for a whole new generation.”
Among the most iconic series in television history, the original Little House on the Prairie ran for nine seasons on NBC, from 1974-1983.

I have been a longtime Star Trek fan and I am currently working my way through each of the 178 episodes of The Next Generation. I notice that Dr. Crusher is missing from the second season. Any idea what happened?
Star Trek: TNG debuted in 1987 and ran until 1994, revered as one of television’s best-written shows. It followed the exploits of the Enterprise 100 years after the time that Captain Kirk and crew boldly searched the cosmos for new life and new civilizations. Gates McFadden was cast as Dr. Beverly Crusher and played that role for the entire first season. Her character was originally conceived to become a foil or a love interest for Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), but her clashes with the show’s head writer led to her removal. Much of her trouble with the writing revolved around sexism and the feeling that her character, because she was female, was often marginalized. She was replaced by Diana Muldaur as Dr. Katherine Pulaski in season two. Alas, by that season’s end, it was clear to all that this was not a good fit. It took a great deal of begging and cajoling to get McFadden to return as Dr. Crusher, but ultimately she did just that — and appeared in every one of the remaining episodes. With all that in mind, it’s interesting to consider that TNG used the same iconic voiceover intro as the original series . . . with just one word altered. The 1960s Star Trek said that the Enterprise ventured “where no man has gone before.” TNG changed that to “where no one has gone before.”

Star Rachel Hilson talks channelling the ’70s and honouring the FBI’s female trailblazers
QWhat intrigued you about Agent Nina Hayes and her mission?
AShe comes to Phoenix with an agenda, which is to get the guy that she believes killed her father. She is obviously very driven and tenacious, and she’s got some stubbornness. And she’s still got a rawness from the pain of losing her father . . . I [also] love her wit; I think she’s really witty and that’s what gets her into some of these doors — and then also sometimes gets her into trouble.
Q
What was it like immersing yourself in the 1970s?
A
It’s funny, when I first got this job and I began doing my research, I asked my mom, just because she grew up in the ’70s. I was like, “Do you think things are better now, or were they better in the ’70s?” And she said that she felt there was more of an upward trajectory in the ’70s, where things were just getting easier and better and more equal. It was fun to go back to a time where things were kind of more on the up. Then also, the music and the clothes.

Q Nina Hayes is loosely based on an actual, groundbreaking FBI agent named Sylvia Mathis. Were you thinking about her during this process?
AThe first thing I did when I got the job was look into who was the first Black female FBI agent. I learned a bit about her story. She unfortunately passed away in a car accident, so her career was cut pretty short . . . In the Bureau, I got to work with a couple agents, including one named Jerri Williams, who is a Black agent who joined in the early ’80s. She really helped me to get into the mindset of a Black woman in this environment. I hope that Nina honours all of those brave Black women who joined at a time when it wasn’t easy to do . . . Still isn’t easy to do.
In the tradition of Air Force One and Olympus Has Fallen, as well as classic odd-couple action comedies like Midnight Run and 48 Hours, this star-studded romp comes straight to Prime Video on Wednesday. Idris Elba plays Sam Clarke, a strait-laced U.K. prime minister, while John Cena is Will Derringer, a Hollywood action star turned U.S. president. These two world leaders have anything but a “special relationship.” In fact, they flat -out despise each other. But when they’re attacked by a common enemy and forced on the run together, they must put their differences (not to mention their egos) aside. Teaming up with an MI6 agent (Priyanka Chopra Jonas, dipping back into spy mode between seasons of Prime’s Citadel), it falls to this mismatched duo to save not just themselves, but the entire world. This is, of course, not the first time Cena and Elba have sparred comedically onscreen, with the two A-listers having co-starred in goofy, gory superhero flick The Suicide Squad back in 2021.
Wednesday, Prime Video
“It was fun doing that whole tit-fortat that he and I did in Suicide Squad, but with different characters,” Elba told Entertainment Weekly. “John’s very funny. He’s a big improvisational guy, so there was lots of that. When we left Suicide Squad, we wanted to work together again, and this was the perfect storm — we got to do a lot together, and it’s an old-school two-hander — he’s playing a funny guy and I’m playing the straight man.” Added Cena: “That makes a great juxtaposition with Idris’ character, who is a master of bureaucracy. [My character] legitimately thinks he’s a badass . . . Movies have made him drink his own Kool-Aid to think that he’s a badass. He finds out very quickly he’s not.”

QIt’s mostly a returning cast this year. But you did have one new recruit — this real estate tycoon, Stephanie. What did she add?

Combining the lurid thrills of Bravo fare like Real Housewives with the addictive melodrama of Yellowstone, The McBee Dynasty galloped onto the TV landscape last year and immediately lassoed itself a massive audience.
The show is set in the rural expanses of Missouri, at McBee Farm & Cattle, a ranch teetering on the cusp of either a billiondollar boom or a complete financial collapse. That said, the real drama stems from the fraught sibling dynamics, as powerrancher Steven McBee spars with his three sons — Jesse, Cole and Steven Jr. — over who will take control of the family

As season two opens, Steven Jr. has seized the reins, and must pull off a successful harvest season to avoid foreclosure. But Cole has his own ideas for the business’ future. On the homefront, Cole struggles with fatherhood; Jesse can’t quite wrap his mind around marriage; and Steve Jr.’s relationship with his gal Calah is “on the rocks,” making the latter feel like an outsider in this tightknit clan. That intoxicating swirl of personal and professional calamity reaches a new level when the FBI shows up, forcing mama bear Kristi to step in and keep both the family and the business together.

Charlize Theron and her band of immortal mercenaries return for The Old Guard 2
THE OLD GUARD 2
Wednesday, Netflix
Charlize Theron had already established her action-hero cred in such movies as Æon Flux, Atomic Blonde and Mad Max: Fury Road when she headlined Netflix’s 2020 fantasy adventure flick The Old Guard. The premise was certainly unique, with the Monster Oscar winner
playing Andy, the leader of a tight-knit group of mercenaries who are actually millennia-old warriors with mysterious regenerative healing abilities that render them immortal. When the secrets of Andy — her actual moniker is Andromache of Scythia — and her team were exposed, they fought back to eliminate the threat of those seeking to replicate and monetize their power.
Five years later, The Old Guard 2 continues the story, and this time Andy
faces off against a formidable foe: Discord, the self-proclaimed “first of the immortals,” played by Uma Thurman. As director Victoria Mahoney noted, Kill Bill veteran Thurman is no slouch in the action department herself. “I believe audiences are excited to see Black Mamba and Atomic Blonde go toe to toe,” Mahoney told Netflix’s Tudum. Of course, Mahoney pointed out, both actresses bring much more than their stunt skills to the table. “For me, in any fight scene, there has to be a worthy opponent,” she added. “Worthy opponents effortlessly elevate fight beats, likewise, worthy opponents effortlessly elevate dramatic beats.”
Screenwriter Greg Rucka, who co-created the graphic novels upon which the films are based, confirmed that viewers are in for an epic battle. “The first film is coming out of a place where Andy has found a purpose, so the second film has to challenge that,” he explained. “That challenge is embodied by Discord. Never mind that you have Charlize over here, and you have Uma over here, and you have melee weapons — anybody who doesn’t want to see the inevitable fight that will come from that has missed the last several years of cinema!”
Meanwhile, fans of the first film can catch up with the rest of Andy’s team. That certainly includes Booker (Matthias Schoenarts), who remains in exile after betraying the others. Then there’s Quynh (Veronica Ngô), who has returned after centuries hidden away in
the ocean. “Being in that iron box was so terrifying and painful for Quynh,” Ngô said. “But then coming back to a totally strange world . . . just imagine being away for maybe 10 years, 20 years, 30 years. This is 500 years, and everything has been changing.”
Meanwhile, Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) work with former CEO operative James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) continue
to delve into the secrets behind their immortality by seeking the assistance of an old friend, Tuah (Henry Golding). For Golding, the opportunity to work with Thurman was an irresistible draw. “Uma is literally the best,” Golding gushed. “She is everything you want her to be. When we had scenes together, she’d look at me and the fanboy would come out.”
Those intense action scenes may look effortless, but they don’t always come without a cost. That was certainly the case for Golding, who threw out his back — not while filming a scene, mind you, but while practicing for one. “It’s always in practice,” Golding told Variety. “It’s always the day before we’re meant to be filming. I’m like, [Golding makes a squealing sound], and then I’m blown out for the rest of the week.”
Working on the film made Goldman respect co-stars Thurman and Theron even more than he already did. “It’s no easy business doing all that stuff,” Golding said of the stunts. “We’re doing it all on the fly sometimes. You practice as much as possible, but it changes when you’re on location so you have to adapt.”
Golding was also impressed with Theron, in her dual role as star and producer of The Old Guard 2. “She’s the best,” Golding said. “She leads from the front. She was on set every time as a producer and she does all of her stunts. She’s amazing.” ■
The adventures of Lord Morpheus conclude in the two-part final season of The Sandman
Neil Gaiman’s groundbreaking comic book The Sandman revolutionized the genre, introducing Lord Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream of the Endless, a god-like entity who is the personification of mortals’ dreams. Bringing the character to the screen has been a monumental undertaking, with initial attempts dating back to the early 1990s. The project sat in dreaded “development hell” for decades, as screenwriter after screenwriter attempted to translate Gaiman’s surreal, dream-infused tales into something approaching a narrative. These aborted attempts included various feature films and even an animated project.
In 2013, a screenwriter was hired by Warner Bros to take a crack at the movie — who ultimately advised the studio that The Sandman would work better as a
series, due to the fragmentary nature of Gaiman’s storytelling. Sometime around 2018, Gaiman was working on adapting his novel Good Omens as a limited series for Amazon when writer/producer David S. Goyer (the Dark Knight trilogy) approached him about collaborating on a series. That ultimately came to fruition with the first season of the Netflix series that premiered in 2022.
With Tom Sturridge cast as Dream, that first season went on to become wildly successful, ranking as Netflix’s No. 1 global offering three days after its release, ultimately becoming the streamer’s eighth most-watched Englishlanguage series of 2022.
With the new season split into two parts, the first six episodes arrive this week (the remaining five episodes will drop July 24, with an additional “bonus episode” on July 31). The new season will also be The Sandman’s last, and it’s nothing if not ambitious.
When Morpheus takes extreme measures to attempt to rescue a woman he sent to eternal damnation 10,000 years ago, he must confront the ruler of Hell, fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar (Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie), which yields a wildly unanticipated result.
“This season is about Dream’s having to accept responsibility for his arrogance, for his ignorance and for his feelings — which he doesn’t even admit to having,”
Jack Gleeson plays mischievous hobgoblin Puck.
showrunner Allan Heinberg told Netflix’s Tudum. “But sooner or later, we all have to reckon with the fact that the struggles we face are often of our own making. Dream must now figure out what to do about it.”
Meanwhile, fans can anticipate the return of Dream’s siblings: Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park); and Despair (Donna Preston). The new season also introduces the rest of the Endless family. “We’ll meet Dream’s eldest brother, Destiny [Adrian Lester]; his younger sister, Delirium [Esmé Creed-Miles]; and the mysterious The Prodigal [Barry Sloane], who abandoned the family 300 years ago — and whom Dream cannot forgive,” says Heinberg.
Other characters introduced in season two include: Morpheus’ son, the oracle Orpheus (Ruairi O’Connor); Norse gods Odin (Clive Russell), Loki (Freddie Fox) and Thor (Laurence O’Fuarain); Nuala and Cluracan (Ann Skelly and Douglas Booth), royal emissaries from the court of Faerie, accompanied by malevolent hobgoblin Puck (Jack Gleeson), royal jester to King Auberon of Faerie; and Barnabas (voiced by Steve Coogan), canine companion of the Prodigal.
While in his own realm, Morpheus continues to be assisted by his faithful librarian Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), wise sidekick Matthew the Raven (voiced by comedian Patton Oswalt) and wisecracking janitor Merv Pumpkinhead (Star Wars’ Mark Hamill). While Gaiman was very hands-on in the first season, The Sandman’s creator has limited involvement this time out — for some very unpleasant reasons, stemming from multiple women accusing
him of sexual assault last year; Gaiman has denied all allegations, insisting that each sexual encounter was consensual. While Gaiman remains innocent until proven guilty, that hasn’t prevented him from experiencing fallout. Not only was he forced to exit the upcoming final season of Good Omens, Disney slammed the brakes on plans to adapt his novel The Graveyard Book into a feature, while he was also dropped by his longtime comic book publisher, Dark Horse.
“This season is about Dream’s having to accept responsibility for his arrogance, for his ignorance and for his feelings — which he doesn’t even admit to having. But sooner or later, we all have to reckon with the fact that the struggles we face are often of our own making. Dream must now figure out what to do about it.”
Whether those allegations contributed to Netflix’s cancellation of the series is a matter of some speculation, but Heinberg has insisted that two seasons was always the plan. “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” he said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.” ■

True Blood alum Stephen Moyer dishes on his role as DI Mick Palmer in new
tephen Moyer has never been happier. Surrounded by murderers in charming English villages, the 55-year-old True Blood actor has found his sweet spot in Art Detectives as Detective Inspector Mick Palmer, the head of the Metropolitan Police’s Heritage Crime Unit, tasked with
investigating art-related crimes. “I wasn’t looking for a cozy crime drama,” he insists. Nevertheless, when the idea of heading up the smallest police department in the whole of the U.K., Moyer was fascinated. “I was rather ecstatic, honestly, when it came along.” He may not have known it, but art forgery would soon become something of an obsession for Moyer. “If you Google ‘art fraud,’ there are thefts every day. There are forgeries discovered every day,
all over the world,” he says. “One of the things that I think is really fascinating about art fraud is if you choose to paint something from a hundred years ago, you have to have a canvas and paints that are a hundred years old. The varnish has to be a hundred years old. The wooden
frame that’s holding the canvas has to be from a hundred years ago. In many respects, you have to be a detective in your own right in order to paint them. I just thought it was a fascinating concept.”
That the lead character appealed to Moyer didn’t hurt either. Mick Palmer is a
genius at sussing out suspects at work, but when it comes to his personal life, the relationships are a mixed bag. “He’s a little bit broken, while brilliant at what he does, which is not a trope that we haven’t seen before, but I’d never seen it set in the art world,” says Moyer. “His dad is a famous art forger, who Mick has reacted against by becoming a policeman.” His new partner, DC Shazia Malik (played by Nina Singh), presents Mick with a different kind of familial relationship.
“Nina is about two years older than my oldest daughter, same age as my eldest son, so by its very nature [her character] became almost like a surrogate daughter,” he says. “And I absolutely adore Nina. I had chemistry reads with three brilliant actresses and Nina, and there was just something about her. She is such an infectious and funny person. Nina and I just laughed and laughed and laughed.”
If his professional partnership is one that puts him at ease, his romantic life does the complete opposite. Early in the series we are introduced to archeologist Rosa Conaghan (played by Coupling actress Sarah Alexander) who turns the detective into mush. “They’re useless together,” laughs Moyer. “They’re completely rubbish at relationships, but brilliant at the thing that they do.” While the series takes the episodic crimes quite seriously, Mick’s dating life gets a more
“If you Google ‘art fraud,’ there are thefts every day. There are forgeries discovered every day, all over the world.”
comedic treatment. “I really leaned into the bumbling idiot part, and they cut a lot of it,” says Moyer. “We did a lot of slapstick, banging into doors and tripping over things, and even though it was funny, we were like, ‘He can’t be a complete idiot,’ right? But there is an inference that he had his heart broken and it’s obviously something very raw for him. He’s not able to open his heart again, so when he has these feelings for Rosa, and he lives in fear of it going wrong, he tries to avoid it. And by her nature, we can see that she’s had a similar pain. So, they’re destined in a way.”
That the show’s creators — Dan Gaster, Will Ing and Paul Powell — have managed to give the show a light, humorous touch does not surprise Moyer. “The three guys who created the show come from sketch comedy,” he says. “They’ve all written for very successful comedians, so there is a nice lighthearted element within it, which I think is a nice break, sometimes, when we’re dealing with murder.” Adding to Moyer’s personal pleasure is the fact that he is surrounded by old friends from throughout his career — and even a loved one. “The picture above Mick’s piano is actually my mom,” reveals Moyer. “The art department said, we need a painting of Mick’s mum, and we wondered whether you’d like it to be your mum. And my mom didn’t know, so when the trailer came out, I was like, ‘I’ve got to call mom, she’ll have a heart attack.” It all feels like the cherry on top of an already delicious three-decadelong career. “I am so lucky I get to do what I do,” says Moyer, who recently reappeared on Elsbeth with former True Blood castmate Carrie Preston, and is next going off to do the third season of The Night Agent. “I do feel quite blessed sometimes,” Moyer observed. “I’m going to knock on wood now.” ■
Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is reimagined in bold new action-adventure series Nautilus
Sunday, 6 p.m., 8:23 p.m. & 10:46 p.m., AMC
Deep beneath the fabled Pillars of Halvar lies Viking treasure waiting to be plucked from the abyss. The only thing stopping one enterprising prisoner from liberating it is a vessel that can reach it. Inspired by the enduring science fiction novel Twenty Thousand
Leagues Under the Sea by author Jules Verne, Nautilus tells the story of how Captain Nemo came to take the helm of the infamous submarine.
Portrayed by Star Trek: Discovery star Shazad Latif, Nemo is first introduced as a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company. An Indian prince stripped of his status and ripped from his family, Nemo is forced to work for the company, designing the engines of a secret submersible, the Nautilus
“The corporation’s more powerful than any country,” Director Crawley (Damien Garvey, The Artful Dodger) declares in the debut episode. “We must maintain dominance. That is why the Nautilus was developed.” Conceived as a weapon to maintain the colonizer’s borders, when the company’s plans change, forcing them to launch the Nautilus earlier than anticipated, Nemo’s rebellion gathers at a moment’s notice to get ahead of them so he can liberate the vessel for his own use.
In an act of revenge against the people who took everything from him, Nemo plots to steal the ship and set off on an adventure to retrieve buried riches. With a hastily assembled crew onboard, Nemo leaves the penal colony in the periscope’s rear-view, but the people running the East India Mercantile Company are not willing to let the Nautilus go without a fight.
Also starring in the 10-part adventure series are Georgia Flood (Apples Never Fall) as hostage-turned-crew member Humility Lucas; Céline Menville (Emily in Paris) as Loti; Thierry Frémont (Das Boot) as Benoit; Richard E. Grant (The Franchise) as White Rajah; Anna Torv (Fringe) as Revna; and Noah Taylor (So Long, Marianne) as Captain Mogg.
It’s nearly impossible to quietly execute a prisoner uprising, and Nemo’s big departure only gives him and his crew a bit of a head start.
“She is mine. I want her back,” Crawley says of the pilfered vessel in the trailer. He is talking to the right guy, Youngblood (Jacob Collins-Levy, Young Wallander), who tells Crawley: “If you’re looking for someone to bring Nemo back in chains, I’m your man.” It’s not hard to find Nemo’s trail, as it seems the charismatic seafarer makes quite an impression on everyone he meets.
Described by various characters as a convict, pirate, stubborn, brave and angry, Nemo is on a mission to get to the mythic treasure he’s after, letting the undetectable submarine be the cover
that his spirit does not afford him. There is simply too much on the line to worry about anything than being the first to lay eyes on buried riches that might be the only thing to secure everyone’s sovereignty.
Along the way, Nemo and the crew of the Nautilus encounter formidable deep sea creatures and explore the incredible unknown landscape of the ocean floor on the way to their destination of the North
East Passage. Chased at sea and on land by those who want either the same fortune they are after or the treasure of the Nautilus, Nemo and the crew must work together to maintain their freedom.
Latif, who will be seen next as Edgar Linton in the buzzy Emerald Fennelldirected adaptation of the timeless Emily Brontë-penned novel Wuthering Heights early next year, spoke to Yahoo! U.K. about portraying a new angle of another well-known character.
“It’s very rare you get the origin story of a character who’s usually in the old film — the James Mason film and all the iterations of it — he’s a mysterious character,” he explained.
“In the book as well, you don’t really know his past, he’s very vague and that’s sort of the thing, but in this we get to explore this very flawed, very complex character who’s on a ship with 10 other brown men, we rarely get shows like that,” Latif continued.
The North American premiere of Nautilus has been on deck for a while. The series was initially ordered and produced as a Disney+ venture, but in August 2023, the streamer dropped the series — which had already been filmed — to cut costs, just one of many projects that were scrapped that year by major entertainment companies. Nautilus was picked up and has aired through other distributors internationally and finally makes its debut on AMC. ■

QThis is very much a light, fun game show. But on some level, does it allow for a genuine study of the generational divide that exists in our society?
A I think so. Of course, at the end of the day, it’s entertainment. We want people to have an easy watch, play along with their family. But I often get asked, “When you meet the contestants, isn’t it so obvious who’s gonna win? Of course, like, a Gen Z would win; they have TikTok and social media and all these things.” But actually, what the show has taught me is that you can’t judge someone by their generation. Every episode, I go out there and I make a guess about who’s going to win — and I’m usually wrong. So I would say that it has taught me to not put Boomers in a box or Gen Z in a box. Really, each individual is super-unique.
Q You got your start as a YouTuber, on the cutting edge of youth culture. But now, in your 30s, do you ever look out and think, “I’m drifting away from that culture?”
A Umm . . . absolutely every day of my life [laughs]. Thank you so much for reminding me! Especially coming up on social media, yeah, of course. Gen Z — I was fully offended when they made fun of our skinny jeans and our side parts, you know what I mean? But now, a nice silver lining is Gen Z too is starting to feel old, because of the generation below them. What goes around comes around. I actually really like being in my mid-30s. I feel like I know myself better than I’ve ever known myself before . . . I don’t know if that’s just something “old

people” say, but I feel pretty good about where I’m at.
QComing from free-wheeling, anything-goes internet platforms, what was it like transitioning into more conventional, rigid broadcast media?
A On YouTube, I was the ultimate decision-maker. I was the legal team. I was the writer. I was kind of everything. And then you step into a set with 100 people that each have very specific jobs and you’re like, “Oh, this is a whole new world” . . . In this format in particular, though, I feel like I can tap into more of what I was on social media — in the sense of being authentically myself. I truly get to banter with these contestants. And that’s why I was so adamant on having a live audience in season two, because I feel like it more so allows me to be myself. That’s the unfiltered version of myself. Out of everything I’ve done in my career, Battle of the Generations ranks pretty high in

terms of me being able to be who I am and be me without a million filters — because other jobs, sometimes there’s a little bit of a guideline around what to do and how to be.
QWe’re seeing a lot more big movie stars like Elizabeth Banks and Alec Baldwin hosting game shows. In the past, that would’ve been a sign their career was tanking. Why has that faux pas changed?
AI think it’s just that the entertainment industry has been forced into evolution. That’s in part by social media and streaming — those have uprooted the ways we think about content creation and distribution. It’s the same thing as, like, “Oh, if you’re a movie star, you can’t do TV shows.” None of those rules apply anymore, because streamers have changed the game, social media has changed the game. There are just less rigid rules in general — which is great. I think people should be allowed to explore and experiment and not be put inside a box . . .
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
