After three big-screen solo outings and four Avengers movies, fans bid a sad farewell to Iron Man, a.k.a. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), when he met a heroic yet tragic end in Avengers: Endgame. Iron Man may be gone, but his legacy continues in Marvel’s latest series for Disney+, Ironheart. The focus is Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a genius MIT student whose ability to reverse-engineer Tony’s tech resulted in her recruitment by the kingdom of Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, she combined her skills with advanced Wakandan technology to create a flying armoured suit which she donned to defeat Prince Namor. When the dust settled, however, Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) confiscated the vibranium Ironheart armour when Riri returned to MIT.
In the series, Riri returns to her hometown of Chicago, where she perfects a new and even more advanced Ironheart suit. “Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins a.k.a. ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos),” notes the series’ synopsis. “Once this show begins, we’re definitely
seeing the same girl that we got introduced to [in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever], but this time around we’re getting a deeper dive,” Thorne told Entertainment Weekly
“It’s an invitation to explore her roots and her upbringing,” Thorne added. “We’re taking it back to her hometown of Chicago, and a bit of a battle ensues as she’s debating between or considering how she wants to use what she realizes is a powerful wealth of knowledge, realizing just how much genius she has in her, deciding what she’s going to do with that. We see that play out in the environment when she gets back home as well — she has these options. Who and how am I going to use these things that I now know about myself?”

I love Nicole Kidman in Nine Perfect Strangers. Is it coming back or is it done after two seasons?
H.P., Vancouver While there’s been no confirmation of a third season, if Kidman does revisit psilocybin-peddling wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko, it likely won’t be for quite some time. In fact, the Oscar winner is busier than ever, having just signed on for a new murder mystery series for Prime Video, Girls and Their Horses. She’s also set to play crimesolving forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta in yet another Prime series, Scarpetta (based on Patricia Cornwell’s novels), while co-starring alongside Elle Fanning in Margo’s Got Money Troubles for Apple TV+.
I enjoy Canada’s Got Talent way more than AGT. When’s it coming back?
D.S., Sooke Apologies for being the bearer of bad news, but the answer to that question is a bit murky. After the fourth season wrapped in mid-May, with Newfoundland singer Jacob Lewis taking home the milliondollar prize, Citytv announced plans for a pause, with the show taking a hiatus for the upcoming season.
One reason for that may have to do with a new madein-Canada gig for Howie Mandel, who shared the Canada’s Got Talent judging table this year with music superstar Shania Twain, comedian Katherine Ryan and rapper Kardinal Offishall. In its hiatus announcement, City revealed that Mandel has signed on to host a homegrown version of The Price Is Right. “When Citytv asked me to be the host of one of the most iconic game shows, I said, ‘What’s your highest bid?’ They said $1,” Mandel quipped at City’s

At the moment, Butt has been focusing on his original calling, standup comedy — and has just released his first-ever comedy album, titled Easily Distracted
Described as “a masterclass in standup,” the album finds Butt riffing on a wide array of topics, ranging from haircuts to tourism to Bigfoot to MMA and much more.
“I’ve been a fan of comedy albums all my life, so it’s odd that I waited this long before releasing my own. Or maybe it’s prudent, to hang around three or four decades to make sure this comedy thing pans out, and isn’t just a weird phase I’m going through,” said Butt of the record, produced by Torontobased Counterfeit Sounds. “Thankfully, the team at Counterfeit stepped up and gave me a kick in the pants. This wouldn’t have come together without them.”

I fondly recall the TV series ALF, in which an alien creature crash-landed in the backyard of a sitcom family, but I don’t remember how the show ended. Did ALF get to go back home, like in E.T.?
R.B., Victoria
ALF — an acronym for “Alien Life Form” — ran from 1986 until 1990 on ABC, tracking a wisecracking extraterrestrial who lives with a typical suburban family, the Tanners. Over four seasons, viewers learned that ALF (voiced by puppeteer Paul Fusco) came from the planet Melmac, was actually named Gordon Shumway and really enjoyed eating cats.
While the Tanners appeared to be a happy TV clan, that wasn’t the case behind the scenes. Andrea Elson (daughter Lynn) told People there was “tension on the set” because the actors “had to play second fiddle to a puppet.” Max Wright (dad Willie Tanner) particularly hated his time on ALF. “It was hard work and very grim,” Wright said. When NBC abruptly cancelled the show, leaving the fates of ALF and the Tanners unresolved, Wright was thrilled. “I was hugely eager to have it over with,” he admitted. His TV wife, Anne Schedeen, recalled that Wright filmed his final scene, then “walked off the set, went to his dressing room, got his bags, went to his car and disappeared.”
In 2018, development began on a reboot that eventually fizzled. Fusco reprised the character in 2023, appearing in new sponsored segments interspersed in ALF reruns after Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort streaming channel acquired the show; alas, that platform shut down earlier this year.

Back in September of 2021, a dystopian thriller from South Korea unexpectedly became Netflix’s most-streamed series ever. It followed a group of cash-strapped citizens given the chance to earn a better life by competing in unhinged kids’ games that, unbeknownst to them, had fatal consequences for the losers.
Creator Hwang Donghyuk took his time crafting a followup, with season two arriving this past December, more than three years later. Luckily, he was shooting season three at the same time, and all six episodes hit the streamer this Friday.
Alas, they will also be the show’s swan song.
The season-two finale saw Squid Game contestant turned revolutionary Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) betrayed by a supposed comrade — his best friend murdered, his insurrection quashed. Now, per Netflix: “Although Gi-hun is at his lowest point yet, the Squid Game stops for no one. So Gi-hun will be forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone’s resolve. With each round, their choices lead to increasingly grave consequences.”
Season three of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ lavish exploration of life among the elite in 1880s New York picks up after last year’s “Opera Wars,” which saw the Russell family score a decisive victory in their campaign to reshape the social scene. That said, the Russells could now face destruction from within, drifting apart as George makes a risky play to bolster his railroad business and Bertha
“sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights.” (Rumour has it, the Russells, or perhaps some other unhappy couple, are headed for divorce this season.) Meanwhile, their old-money rivals the Brooks are also at odds, as sisters Ada and Agnes clash over control of their own household. And finally, young Peggy meets a swoon-worthy doctor — but his parents disapprove of her career as a journalist.

Having scored an Emmy nomination for his work on 2022 limited series Black Bird, star Taron Egerton reteams with creator Dennis Lehane for another complex true-crime character study, once again streaming on Apple TV+.
Based on roundly acclaimed podcast Firebug, the show follows fire department investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton), who is reluctantly paired with police detective Michell Calderon (Friday Night Lights alum Jurnee Smollett) to catch not one, but two serial arsonists plaguing the Pacific Northwest. As they sift through the ashes at crime scene after crime scene, it seems clear that at least one of the offenders is operating from within their own department.
Rounding out the supporting cast are Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear as Dave’s quirky boss, Harvey Englehart, and Trying’s Rafe Spall as Steven Burk, a shady man from Michell’s past who maintains a stranglehold on her present.
Beyond just pulpy thrills, this nine-part drama delves into the pain, dysfunction and complicated motivations of characters on both sides of the law, as all of them inch closer to an end game that will see their lives, careers — and, perhaps most intriguingly, their self-delusions — go up in smoke.
“What really drives my engine is always the human psyche,” Lehane told Time magazine. “I really think this is about people who are turned on by the things that can kill them . . . I hope [the series] leads people to question a lot of these paths they’re going down. I wish we could all just admit, ‘Hey, we’re all messed up — every single one of us.’ And if you’re not, you’re lying to yourself and to everybody else. So, just strive to be a little better every day . . . Every single person in the show lies to themselves, and it only leads to grief.”
As franchise filmmaking has come to dominate Hollywood, Disney continues cashing in with live-action adaptations of their old cartoons — from Beauty and the Beast to The Little Mermaid. In March, it was Snow White’s turn, as the 1937 classic was reimagined for modern times.
Directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer), the breezy musical stars West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler as the titular princess, who is terrorized by her evil stepmother (Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot), flees to the forest and forges an unlikely alliance with some pint-sized miners. Its theatrical run didn’t exactly set the box office ablaze, with an underwhelming $205.5 million gross against a reported $410 million budget for production and marketing. What’s more, the film was plagued by controversy surrounding its “colourblind casting,” the decision not to use little people in the roles of the Seven Dwarves, and social media posts from its stars that engaged with the IsraelHamas conflict.
Disney+
Now, however, the new-look Snow White gets a second chance to dazzle audiences — hoping to leave the bad press behind with its debut on streamer Disney+.
Speaking to Allure about his princess, director Webb gushed: “Snow White has an optimistic, youthful grace. Even in her darkest moments, she finds humanity and beauty in others. I think Rachel has that in her spirit. And it doesn’t hurt that during her screen test, she made us weep with her rendition of ‘Waiting on a Wish.’ ”
Better yet, Webb added, as a lifelong devotee of all things Disney, Zegler was a leading lady who “understood the Disney tone I was after — a delicate blend of fairytale, with a few modern twists. She delivers the music and dancing with an unironic grace that hearkens back to the original, while still feeling emotionally alive and real. It’s no easy feat.”

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Mariska Hargitay rediscovers her late mother, movie star Jayne Mansfild, in her directorial debut
MY MOM JAYNE
Friday, 8 p.m. & 11:30 p.m., HBO Canada
After 26 seasons and counting playing Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Mariska Hargitay has been a TV star for so long that it’s easy to forget she’s a Hollywood scion, daughter of movie starlet Jayne Mansfield and Hungarian bodybuilding champion Mickey Hargitay. Mansfield, of course, hit it big in the
1950s as a big-screen sex symbol in such films as The Girl Can’t Help It and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? — until her bright career was tragically cut short at age 34 when she was killed in a fatal 1967 car accident.
Hargitay was just three years old when her mother died; she and her siblings had been sleeping in the back seat of the car, but miraculously survived.
Robbed of her mother at such a young age, the tragic loss she experienced in childhood defined her life. Hargitay CRAVE
could only get to know her mother from a distance — via vintage photos, movies and the recollections of others.
That, however, is something she set out to remedy in My Mom Jayne, a new HBO documentary that drops this week. Marking Hargitay’s directorial debut, the film explores her mother’s life and legacy, offering viewers a heartfelt tribute to the late movie icon while also providing Hargitay with her own cathartic journey of discovery.
“The film follows Mariska as she seeks to know, understand, and embrace her mother for the first time,” states HBO’s synopsis of the new documentary. “Through intimate interviews and a collection of never-before-seen photos and home movies, she grapples with her mother’s public and private legacy and discovers the layers and depth of who Jayne was, not only to her audience but to those who were closest to her.”
For Hargitay, making the documentary — which had its official premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May — was an emotional experience that has been a lifetime in the making. “This movie is a labour of love and longing,” she said in a statement. “It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth.”
As Hargitay explained in an interview with Vanity Fair, making the film helped her to fill in the blanks in her childhood. “I don’t remember the accident. I don’t even remember being told that my mother had died,” Hargitay recalled. “I look at photos, and I don’t really remember anything until I was five.”
Among the film’s many revelations is a huge bombshell: the man she’d believed to be her biological father actually was not. That would be Nelson Sardelli, a one-time Las Vegas entertainer whom Mansfield had an affair with after briefly splitting from her husband, with whom she later reconciled.
As Hargitay recalls in the film, she was in her 20s when someone sent her a photo of Sardelli. She immediately recognized the resemblance, and the truth hit her like the proverbial ton of bricks. “It was like the floor fell out from underneath me,” she says in My Mom Jayne. “Like my infrastructure dissolved.”
“This movie is a labour of love and longing. It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth.”
The discovery that she wasn’t who she thought she was sent her reeling, realizing that she’d been “living a lie my entire life.”
Over time, she was able to reconcile it all, coming to a profound epiphany. “I grew up where I was supposed to, and I do know that everyone made the best choice for me,” she told Vanity Fair. “I’m Mickey Hargitay’s daughter — that is not a lie. This documentary is kind of a love letter to him, because there’s no one that I was closer to on this planet.”
Interviewed by Deadline, Hargitay confirmed that she’d achieved what she’d set out to do with My Mom Jayne: to come to an understanding of the mother who was taken from her. “I just longed and ached to know the real person and what made her tick and what made her afraid and what was her pain and her joy and all of that,” she said. ■
New challenges arise for chef Carmy and the staff at the fldgling restaurant in the fourth season of The Bear
The wait is over, and it’s time to get back into the kitchen for the highly anticipated fourth season of The Bear. The critically acclaimed series (winner of 21 Emmys, five Golden Globes and five Critics Choice Awards) takes viewers back to Chicago, where brilliant-but-tortured chef Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) has successfully transformed his family-run sandwich shop — The Original Beef of Chicagoland — into a high-end culinary destination dubbed The Bear.
Putting his heart and soul — and let’s not forget the hundreds of thousands of bucks he borrowed from Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) — into the place was only the beginning. Now, the real work begins. In fact, the new season will bring an array of new challenges to Carmy and
his team — particularly Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), who finds herself at a crossroads as she’s forced to make a monumental decision about her future with The Bear after receiving an intriguing offer to run another restaurant.
“With new challenges around every corner, the team must adapt, adjust and overcome,” teases the fourth season’s synopsis. “This season, the pursuit of excellence isn’t just about getting better — it’s about deciding what’s worth holding on to.”
The previous season finale left a number of questions unanswered. Will the increasingly reluctant Uncle Jimmy continue to keep pumping money into
the restaurant? That seems unlikely, judging from a scene in the trailer. “That clock is telling you how much money we have left,” Jimmy tells Carmy. “When that shows zero, this restaurant needs to cease operations.”
Will the all-important Chicago Tribune review be the panacea the restaurant so desperately needs? As the trailer indicates, it certainly wasn’t the home run they were expecting. “The offerings were substantially different on each visit,” reads the review, offering a critical counterpoint to Carmy’s insistence on changing up the menu each day.
“Consistency seems to be the weak link here,” the review adds.
These and other questions will be answered, although specific plot points for the new season are being kept tightly under wraps. That said, FX CEO John Landgraf dropped some hints during a recent interview with Puck.
According to Landgraf, the third season — which wasn’t nearly as well received as the previous seasons — is actually the first half of a two-season story arc.
“It is a very deeply personal show. That’s part of why it’s great,” Landgraf said, referencing the third season, in which Carmy felt unable to move forward. “There are a lot of reasons it’s
great, but one of them is the relationship between the creator [Christopher Storer], the author and the characters, and he’s been stuck a lot at times in his life, and he wanted to make a season about stuckness. I’ve been doing this a long time. I was well aware that stuckness is not necessarily the most riveting [thing to watch]. But I also think there are so many things in that [season] that are just absolute masterpieces. And I will say, knowing what I do know about the upcoming season, for those that have stayed with it, they’re going to be really well rewarded. Because after stuckness comes unstuckness.”
“It is a very deeply personal show. That’s part of why it’s great.”
During the first three seasons, The Bear has benefited from gueststarring appearances by the likes of Bob Odenkirk, John Mulaney, Sarah Ramos, Alex Moffat, Jon Bernthal, Olivia Colman, Joel McHale, Sarah Paulson, John Cena and Jamie Lee Curtis, who delivered a devastating performance as Carmy’s emotionally unstable mother.
“And that’s one of the joys of being on the show,” White mused in an interview with Esquire. “I think Chris has a sixth sense about these kind of things — he knows exactly who to put on the show. We’ve been so lucky so far, and I’m hopeful we will have some more familiar faces in the next season.” ■
A washed-up golf pro regains his mojo by mentoring a talented young phenom in new sports comedy Stick
Wednesday, Apple TV+
50-something year old man, who once was on top of the world, now finds himself at a loss in his life. Variations of this show have existed before — many of them starring Jon Hamm — but when A Good Day to Die Hard screenwriter Jason Keller set out to tell his version of a middle-aged man finding redemption and purpose in life,
he knew exactly what he didn’t want. “I was not interested in writing a bleak story,” he says. “I want this show to be aspirational. I want this show to feel positive. That’s not to say that you can’t go to deeply wounded or vulnerable places, but you don’t have to stay there and you can move through those places, learn from those losses and start anew.”
In the heartfelt Ted Lasso-esque sports comedy Stick, Owen Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, a competitive golfer whose professional and personal
life took a sudden turn, and he never found his way back. But when Pryce encounters rebellious teenager Santiago Wheeler (Peter Dager) on the golf range, something in him changes. “He sees so much of himself in this young kid,” says Keller. “He certainly sees much of the talent that he had when he was a younger man, in this young man. Pryce’s intuition tells him that this kid is carrying
a burden that he shouldn’t carry alone. There are all these mirrored things that I think Pryce is drawn to.”
Santiago, or Santi, the young sports prodigy who lives with his single mother Elena (Mariana Treviño), at first has zero interest in hitching his wagon to Pryce’s. While their relationship starts from a place of mistrust, the audience will be onboard from the beginning,
Santi
much thanks to Wilson’s commitment to the character. “In some weird way, as untethered as he seems, he’s really the grounding force because he represents passion, adventure, willingness to take risks,” says comedian Marc Maron, who plays Pryce’s curmudgeonly best friend and longtime caddy, Mitts. “He’s surrounded by all these people that are locked into their ways, and he is the sublime leader into these other characters freeing themselves.”
Wilson’s castmate Treviño praises the funnyman’s emotional depth as the character at the centre of the show.
“It was an absolute pleasure to watch him do this with such simplicity and authenticity of heart,” she says. “It’s a perfect character for him and we were all under his spell.” In relative newcomer Dager, Wilson found the perfect onscreen partner to elevate both his dramatic and comedic performance. “I think we’d seen 600 or 700 actors and hadn’t found the guy that we felt was the right fit,” says Keller. “From his self-tape, I knew Peter was the guy. He was so vulnerable. And when he read in person for the role, he just constantly showed me that he was willing to open himself up to this character and really challenged all of us. That was the beautiful thing about Peter.” Keller chose golf as a metaphor for life because of its ability to feel both solitary and like a version of the world at large. “When you’re out on the golf course, you feel very alone and it really is all about how you’re emotionally feeling about

yourself,” he says. “And I think we can often feel very alone and very cut off from the world and people around us. So there’s a synergy there, between what a golfer goes through on a golf course and what some of us go through in our lives.”
There are also other similarities to life, if you ask Maron. “For me, life is a frustrating, relentless series of obstacles that either you choose to get through or you just go back to the clubhouse,” says the comedian, who admits he is not a golfer. “It seems like a very aggravating undertaking to me, but I appreciate it,” says Maron. “You have to be at least kind of good to get any joy out of it, and I don’t know if I have the patience to overcome the frustration of getting good at golf.”
For Treviño, the world of golf also highlighted the importance of human
will. “The game is about learning how to conquer yourself in a sense,” she says. “The ball is like a symbol of a concentrated human intention. How, in all this vastness that seems so indomitable, are you going to pierce through it and get to a very specific point? We do that with our soul, with our consciousness, constantly, when we throw out our intentions. And sometimes it travels farther than what we think.” Indeed, it is hope, ambition and a belief that we’re better together that Keller hopes viewers walk away with after watching Stick. “These are certainly dark times and maybe this is a personal reaction to that,” he says. “I certainly need something like this. I’m tired of what seems pretty grim, out there. So, I hope that people do tune into this show to maybe take a break from it.” ■
Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho are top cops trying to prevent a deadly cataclysm in high-octane thriller Countdown
Wednesday, Prime Video
Aficionados of action-packed, adrenaline-pumping thrillers should buckle up for Countdown, a gritty new drama starring Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles and All Rise alum Jessica Camacho as high-operating police officers assigned a deadly task that could save millions of innocent lives.
Helmed by Derek Haas, the creator behind hit shows such as Chicago P.D. and FBI: International, the debut season of Countdown is a 13-episode thrill ride that brings viewers into the heart of the danger while smoothing the tension with a healthy dose of comedy — a combination with which fans of Supernatural are well acquainted.
Likewise, those who have dabbled in Haas’ other work will already know that he is no stranger to comedy-punctuated
action himself, as he often leans toward gritty heroes who love their jobs — danger and all.
“I grew up loving action movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Beverly Hills Cop,” Haas told Men’s Health, adding, “so those wild character-based, set piece-based action thrillers are always in the back of my mind. I like it when the heroes have a bounce in their step and love their jobs, versus the depressed,
I‘m-haunted-by-what-I’ve-seen type of characters.”
Ackles’ character, Mark Meachum, certainly falls into that character category. Described by Ackles as a “rogue L.A. detective, wrong-side-of-thetracks kind of guy [who] takes risks that most people wouldn’t take,” Meachum is recruited alongside other edgy, topperforming law enforcement officers to end an imminent terrorist threat that could wipe out a large portion of the city of Los Angeles. Referred to as a “Chernobyl-level event” and “another 9/11,” the endgame plan sees many false starts throughout its 13 episodes. However, a question remains: will the team of superstar agents be enough to stop a well-designed attack on one of America’s largest cities?
Joining Meachum in a string of metropolitan heroics is Amber Oliveras, a female agent toughened by years of having to prove herself on the force, played by All Rise and Taken star Jessica Camacho.
Also on the team are Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), Lucas Finau (Uli Latukefu) and Nathan Blythe (Grey’s Anatomy alum Eric Dane), the lead officer who recruited the other agents based on their track records.
“When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to
investigate,” notes the series’ synopsis. “But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions.”
The idea for a task force-based series reportedly came to Haas while he was working on Chicago P.D. Per Entertainment Weekly, it was the arc of Chicago P.D. character Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) that kickstarted Haas’ fascination with task forces — namely their creation and structure.
“I grew up loving action movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Beverly Hills Cop, so those wild character-based, set piece-based action thrillers are always in the back of my mind.”
“I found out it’s kind of like an all-star team and it’s got people from a bunch of different agencies,” Haas told EW. “So you got DEA or NSA — or you could have somebody from the coast guard, secret service, detectives from local police departments, feds — and they’re on a particular mission.”
In the same interview, Haas shared that the dynamic between the agents is really what drives Countdown and sets it apart from other procedural action series.
“Putting this disparate group together and then emphasizing different strengths is what makes the show,” said Haas. “And watching as they come together as a team, I think that’s what the viewers are going to find really interesting.” ■

Horror fans watched the zombie apocalypse unfold in 2002’s 28 Days Later, when the rage virus escaped from a research lab and ended the world as we knew it, transforming the infected into unthinking, bloodthirsty maniacs. Now, original director Danny Boyle (who sat out the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later) returns for this followup centring on a group of survivors on a small island, connected to the mainland by a single heavily defended causeway. For nearly 30 years, they have remained self-sufficient and completely separate from the postapocalyptic carnage. When a father and son are compelled to leave this tight-knit community, they discover secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but also their fellow survivors.
Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Anna Chlumsky, Da’Vine Joy Randolph When a group of mercenaries attacks a lavish wedding, taking all the participants hostage, these soldiers-for-hire have no idea what they’re in for when it’s revealed that the maid of honour (Rebel Wilson) is actually a secret agent who is ready, willing and more than able to rain hellfire down on those who would ruin the wedding of her best friend (Wilson’s Pitch Perfect co-star Anna Camp).

QAs much success as you’ve had in the U.S., how important is it for you to still work on Canadian projects?
AI love making art. It’s nice to do that in Canada. It’s nice to do that in the States. It’s nice to do that wherever I’m welcome. But Super Team Canada is . . . we’re making references that I thought I was the only one that understood them. There’s a whole episode about Anne of Green Gables — which I was obsessed with growing up — and you don’t really get to make content that resonates that deep with you.
Q What exactly appealed to you about the portrait of Canada that’s on display in this show?
A The story and the characters were so interesting to me, and then it was really these golden Canadian references that kept coming up in each episode. I think that Canadians have this wonderful ability . . . we’re such a humble group of people. [With Super Team Canada] we’re laughing at ourselves and just doing a bunch of inside jokes that really are for our own enjoyment.
Q How fitting is it that the series is coming out now, amidst a trade war and attacks on Canadian sovereignty?
A We started working on this years ago, and I think it’s all about writing a love letter to the country that we just adore. The timing is very bizarre and funny . . . and strange. But for us, when we were creating this, it was more about creating these characters that were so funny and different, and sort of struggling.
You’ve seen her as steely-eyed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill all across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s also shared the big screen with Tom Cruise in action pic Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. But Cobie Smulders is, no doubt, still best known as charmingly messy news anchor Robin Scherbatsky in CBS’s hit rom-sitcom How I Met Your Mother
Q Is the show commenting at all on typical “superhero team-up” stories?
AI don’t think it’s making a commentary. I think it’s just a funny idea. I mean, the fact that we have a superhero named Poutine . . . and The Sasquatchewan? It’s more just a silly, fun romp and not trying to be anything serious at all. It’s trying to give people an opportunity to laugh . . . It is really just entertainment for the masses — mostly for the Canadian masses.
Q This particular team that your character, Niagara Falls, struggles to lead is profoundly dysfunctional. But what is it about them that actually works?
AWell, it takes them awhile, but I think they realize that they’re stronger together. And gosh, isn’t that what we need right now? [Laughs]
Q Overall, how has fame impacted your life? Was it what you thought it would be, before you were famous?
AThe B.C. native wades back into the superhero genre — tongue planted firmly in cheek this time — for an unhinged cartoon called Super Team Canada. She voices Niagara Falls, leader of a cut-rate Canadian superhero squad that becomes humanity’s only hope after the rest of the world’s mightiest crusaders are wiped out.
Well, when I hear the term “famous,” I have a hard time with it. I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve been in projects that people like. I am a recognizable person — but I still live kind of the same life. My life has changed since I started acting, for sure — but in terms of just being out in the world, I feel I operate still very much the same way that I always have.
Q Looking back, is there one fan encounter that still really resonates?
A My goodness, I’ve been blessed with so many. I think the perk of the job that I have is I get to meet so many people. I’m an ovarian cancer survivor and I’ve met a lot of women — and also a lot of other people — who have been affected by cancer. When you’re a public figure and you share something that you’re going through, there’s a kinship that develops, and then they share their own story with me. It’s wonderful to just experience that with people.
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
