At first glance, Netflix’s Building the Band appears to be yet another American Idol copycat, a reality competition in which unknown singers compete to form a new musical group. Naturally, there’s a twist: they don’t actually see each other until joining forces for their respective bands, finding their future bandmates based on their creative compatibility alone; the first time they meet face-to-face comes when they perform together onstage.
“What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography and style come into play?” declares a press release. “With incredible performances, compelling drama and one big goal — to find the next great music band — the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.”
All the typical elements are in place, including a host with a boy band background (AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys) and a judging panel, consisting of former Pussycat Dolls singer (and recent Tony Award winner) Nicole Scherzinger, ex- Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland and Liam Payne, who came to fame via One Direction — which, let’s not forget, was also formed by a TV singing competition (Britain’s The X Factor).
Payne filmed the show last August, two months before falling to his death from a hotel balcony in the midst of unpleasant circumstances that generated an endless stream of salacious tabloid headlines.
Producers faced the difficult decision of either scrapping the show or moving forward, ultimately choosing the latter. Understandably, Netflix glosses over the tragedy, stating only that Payne’s family had “reviewed the series and is supportive of his inclusion.”
This isn’t the first time that a TV show has been forced to cope with the death of a star, but the nature of Building the Band guarantees Payne’s passing will cast a pall over what is otherwise a lighthearted singing competition.

I heard they fired Will Arnett from LEGO Masters! Why?!
E.G., Tsawwassen Currently right in the middle of season five, Fox’s toy-block battle remains popular as ever, which is why it’s just received an early renewal for season six. Alas, pride of Toronto Will Arnett is unavailable to host next year due to scheduling conflicts — being the in-demand thespian that he is. So Fox has turned to its stalwart Masked Singer emcee Nick Cannon, who assured fans in a statement: “Season six, we’re bringing an actionpacked hour full of family fun, passion and for the first time ever, in-person audition episodes. I can’t wait to see the insane creations and give away a big bag of money to the best of the best.”
The Last of Us ended on such a huge cliffhanger . . . please tell me they didn’t cancel it!
E.B., North Vancouver Despite a sharp ratings dropoff in season two, HBO’s zeitgeistthrottling apocalyptic thriller will return for a third instalment, likely to air in 2027. Season two found Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on a quest for revenge against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the vicious young paramilitary soldier who killed her surrogate father Joel (Pedro Pascal). The finale
found Ellie and friends in dire straits indeed, staring down the barrel of Abby’s gun.
When season three does arrive, fans can expect yet another curveball — one almost on par with the shocking death that opened season two. Just like in the groundbreaking video games upon which the show is based, the story’s POV will shift to the “villain.”
Speaking at an Emmys “For Your Consideration” event in June, game creator Neil Druckmann, who developed the TV series alongside Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin, let slip a little spoiler
Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent will return for a second season . . . but leading man Jake Gyllenhaal will not.
while reflecting on the lengthy process of turning The Last of Us into a TV show, after originally developing it for the big screen. “I think it was good to go on that journey to end up at HBO, end up at a place that leaned into those controversial decisions,” said Druckmann. “But the decisions are just what the story required, and even now, it’s like I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way . . . We just ended season two, and season three is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.”
Turning your arch-nemesis into your protagonist is, no doubt, a bold move . . . even for the network that killed Ned Stark on Game of Thrones. “I was sure that they wouldn’t let us do this when we started adapting this,” Druckmann continued, “but they’ve leaned into what makes, I believe, the story special. And allowed us not only the time but the creative freedom to be able to take these swings, and I think the audience really appreciates that.”
Are they doing another season of Presumed Innocent?
J.V., Victoria Apple TV+’s hit courtroom drama based on the 1987 novel by Scott Turow will return. Season one followed embattled Illinois prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he was put on trial for the murder of his colleague/secret lover. Turow wrote multiple books centred on Sabich, but season two of this David E. Kelley-created series shifts focus to a new character — and, in fact, a new author. Based on Jo Murray’s Dissection of a Murder (which itself won’t be published till 2026), season two casts Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Leila Reynolds, a scrappy lawyer whose first murder case is the high-profile slaying of a judge. She feels very much in over her head — but for some reason, the accused is adamant only she can defend him. A premiere date is still TBD.

Wondering about a long-ago movie or a classic TV show? Send your questions to Rick Forchuk at tvweek@canadawide.com
I know I am stuck in time, but as one who is still a fan of Bob and Doug McKenzie (of SCTV fame), can you tell me if there was ever a sequel to their movie? I think it was just hilarious!
S.C., Surrey
Beer-swillin’ “hosers” Bob and Doug McKenzie (played by Canadian treasures Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) were a fixture of iconic homegrown sketch show SCTV (1976-1981) — before spinning off into their very own movie, Strange Brew, in 1983. (Shot largely in Toronto, several scenes were also lensed right here in B.C., around Prince George.)
The plot of the film saw the unemployed brothers trying to con their way into a payday. One of their schemes involved placing a live mouse in a beer bottle and trying to convince the brewery to give them free suds. Unfortunately, that put them on a collision course with a villainous beer baron (played by the great Max von Sydow) who had a scheme of his own: adding a chemical to his brew that would allow him to control the minds of all drinkers.
The film is revered as a cult classic — and an indelible piece of Canadiana. A sequel was attempted but, alas, never quite came to fruition.
As a consolation prize for SCTV fans, it was just announced that star Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement for a sequel to another of his most iconic films: Star Wars parody Spaceballs (1987) — wherein he played goofy Darth Vader analogue “Dark Helmet.” Tentatively set for 2027, Moranis will be joined by original co-writer, director and portrayer of “Yogurt,” 98-year-old comedy legend Mel Brooks

Although set 50,000ish years from now, in the deepest expanses of outer space, this tale of humanity reckoning with the unstoppable decline of civilization has never felt more timely. And now, in season three, the galaxy- and generationspanning saga based on Isaac Asimov’s novels somehow manages to grow even bigger and bolder.
Jumping 152 years ahead, we resume to find mathematician-turnedmessiah Hari Seldon’s foundational efforts to mitigate the damage of our species’ statistically guaranteed Dark Age
gaining traction and gathering followers across the stars. Meanwhile, the once-all-powerful Galactic Empire has dwindled amidst its own greed, denial and allround intransigence.
But these two bitter rivals must now band together to face a common enemy — a vicious warlord called The Mule, who has his sights on universal domination by way of “physical and military force, as well as mind control.”
Bringing this despot to life is an actor who’s got a knack for villainy on an epic scale: Pilou Asbæk, best known as despicable pirate king Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.

At a time when U.S. federal agents stoke daily controversy by hunting down and deporting immigrants, this new series flips the proverbial script.

In that piece, writer Kevin Sieff noted that the Liaison Unit nabs 13 “gringos” per month — from serial killers to white collar crooks. As one real-life cop put it: “We find them everywhere. This mind-bending flick out of Germany reunites Army of Thieves co-stars Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee. Here, instead of plotting a heist during the apocalypse, they play a couple whose apartment is suddenly encased in a brick wall, forcing them to team up with their wary neighbours to find a way out.
Cinematic history is rife with monsters who miraculously return from certain death. Dracula, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger . . . and now, Dexter Morgan. Dex joined that ignominious club in 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, when the Miami PD blood spatter analyst who moonlighted as a killer of serial killers came back from faking his own death at the end of the original series. That revival saw our antihero living incognito in Upstate New York, when now-teenaged son Harrison (Jack Alcott) tracked him down and proved to be a chip off the old block when he shot dear old dad in the heart. That was supposed to be it for the Murderous Mr. Morgan, but it turns out neither star Michael C. Hall nor Paramount+ were quite ready to say goodbye. Now, hot off the success of prequel Dexter: Original Sin (starring Patrick Gibson as a young Dex), Hall returns in Resurrection, which picks up a few weeks after New Blood, as Dexter awakens in the hospital. It turns out, the frosty climes slowed down his
heart rate and kept him from bleeding out for just long enough to be revived. Alas, while his heart is still pumping, it’s also broken. With Harrison in the wind, Dex resolves to find his son and make amends for the legacy he forced upon him. That search leads from New York State to New York City, where Dexter and Harrison meet back up and promptly stumble into something rotten at the core of the Big Apple. To make matters worse, Dex’s old Miami PD pal Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives searching for answers, intent on dredging up the past our protagonist is so eager to outrun. On that note, after sitting out New Blood, original co-star James Remar also returns as Dexter’s late father/ghostly conscience, Harry Morgan.
Meanwhile, new cast members include a stunning array of A-listers: Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter.

This latest slew of misadventures opens with the long-awaited second half of their crossover with fellow Philadelphia-set comedy Abbott Elementary. Airing on ABC back in January, that episode of Abbott found Mac, Charlie et al. showing up at the school for court-ordered community service. Adopting a sort of Rashomon approach, part two will now tell the exact same story — except now from the perspective of “the Gang.”
As Rob McElhenney — who is both star and co-creator of Sunny — explained to the Los Angeles Times, Abbott’s mockumentary format was the real key to merging the two shows’ divergent tones. “That’s what allowed for us to still be authentic and step into the world of Abbott — because these characters are going into a school and they’re constantly monitored by cameras, so they would put on an act. If we’re not acting the way that our

Sunny characters would, it’s because we know we’re being filmed . . . We might not use the same language. We might not make our intentions so obvious or known. We might not be wearing our id on our sleeves. Conversely, when they came over to us, we thought it would be fun to see what their characters would be like when the bell rings and the cameras are not on them.”
But that’s actually just one of two new episodes that kicks off the season. In the second, Mac, Charlie and Dennis are on the hunt for “money and parasitic social privileges” as they pitch their new business venture to Philadelphia’s elite. Meanwhile, with Frank on his deathbed, Sweet Dee suffers through the five stages of grief.

HBO Emmy magnet Hacks has been a boon for the careers of all involved. Among the breakout stars is Megan Stalter, who never met a scene she couldn’t steal as loose-cannon Hollywood talent manager Kayla.
While Stalter remains a member of that ensemble, now she also gets a chance in the spotlight with this Netflix rom-com series from Girls’ Lena Dunham.
She plays Jessica, a bombastic young New Yorker who finds herself in need of a full-life reset after her reaction to a breakup goes from messy to borderline prosecutable. So, she moves to London with dreams of fairytale romance in her head. She does, indeed, meet a suitor

Speaking with Tudum, creator Dunham reflected: “When I first started coming to the U.K. for work . . . I thought to myself, ‘I want to write something about the experience of being a foreigner here, and the fantasies we have of it vs. the realities.’ Then when I met my husband, Luis [Felber, who co-created Too Much with his wife], I felt like I was experiencing all of that . . . but in the context of a relationship.”

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

The south of France conjures images of sunny Mediterranean beaches, the taste of fine wine and olive oil, the feeling of romance . . . and the mystery of suspicious deaths? That’s always the case in British dramedy The Madame Blanc Mysteries, returning this week with a fourth season.
After leaving behind her life in England following her husband’s death, antiques dealer Jean White (portrayed by series creator and co-writer Sally Lindsay), settled into their second home in the fictional French village of Sainte Victoire to investigate his possible murder. In the picturesque town, the couple shared a holiday home that suddenly became Jean’s last asset — and first clue in the mystery of her husband’s passing.
For three seasons, Jean has used her unique set of skills and knowledge of priceless artifacts to solve the death of not only her late spouse, but a series of local conundrums. The Sainte Victoire locals have given Jean plenty to assess, whether it be precious antiques or hidden motives. The
new six-episode season sees Jean take on a fresh set of mysteries with French flair alongside her trusty confidantes.
Steve Edge (The Reluctant Landlord ) stars as Dom Hayes, Jean’s right-hand man. A taxi driver originally from the U.K., Dom helps Jean acclimate to her new home more permanently and follows her lead when it comes to investigations. The pair have become very close over their cases, their relationship cheekily pointed out in the new season’s official trailer with Jean’s clumsy introduction, “This is my partner, Dom — business partner.”
This year, the two put the will-they-orwon’t-they debate to rest, finally giving their romance a chance. Surrounded by busybodies and not interested in anyone else’s thoughts on their budding courtship, Dom and Jean keep their secret safe between them, at least for now. Stakes are high as the crime-solving duo, who have made a name for themselves by uncovering hidden truths, now have to cover their own tracks.
Also returning this season are Robin Askwith (Strike) and Sue Holderness (Still Open All Hours) as Jean’s friends Jeremy and Judith Lloyd James, as well as Alex Gaumond (The Franchise) as local chief
“Sometimes we’ve come up with an idea and pitched it to the channel and they don’t believe it, but all our stories are based in truth.”
of police André Caron. Series co-writer Sue Vincent (Blindspot) is back as mechanic Gloria Beaushaw, while Paul Chuckle (ChuckleVision) is Gloria’s father, Trevor, and Tony Robinson (Time Team) plays Dom’s uncle, Patrick.
While Jean and Dom may be amateur sleuths, their services are commissioned by André as the key to solving the hidden mysteries of Sainte Victoire. With a keen eye for antiques — whether it’s a centuries-old coin, a ring with a hidden compartment, intriguing fine china or a bejewelled pendant — Jean is the one who gives voice to artifacts that were silent witnesses to gruesome crimes.
In a teaser for the upcoming season, the breezy dramedy looks to be injected with a few more thrills than usual. Jean faces the business end of a knife, pointed at her neck through the window of her car, while in another scene, she and Dom are held up at gunpoint. Living in the heaven that is southern France has its perks, but Jean’s indispensable gifts mean she has to chip at the polish of paradise and those who are trying to get away with murder surely have their eye on the village’s very own Sherlock Holmes.
Lindsay recently spoke with The Telegraph about crafting the series with Vincent, whom she says handles the research while Lindsay is the “criminal mind” in the partnership. “Sometimes we’ve come up with an idea and pitched it to the channel and they don’t believe it, but all our stories are based in truth.
I’m a bit funny about that; I like it to be real. The antiques we talk about all exist, too.”
The longtime Coronation Street actress also described a phenomenon she’d witnessed of nonexistent roles for older women when she was coming up in the industry, something that she happily rejects now with The Madame Blanc Mysteries and other such series.
Lindsay told The Telegraph of witnessing actresses vanish for a decade once they hit 50 years old, and “then it was like, ‘You can come back now, Love, you’re playing Grandma.’ Why were they not relevant? They’re going through teenage kids, menopause, all sorts of things — it’s a fascinating time in life and one that I’m in now. I like putting us on telly. It’s important.” ■

Cadence Sinclair Eastman has been coming to her family’s private island off the coast of Massachusetts since the summer she was born. Every year, she reunites with her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and their childhood friend Gat, and the tightknit group spends the season engaging in low-key mischief. But when an accident during her 15th summer strips the girl of her memory, Cadence returns to Beechwood Island looking for answers. Her biggest question: Why hasn’t she heard from her best friends in a year?
Based on the highly praised YA psychological horror novel penned by E. Lockhart, We Were Liars has been adapted into a limited series by Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec and Roswell reboot creator Carina Adly Mackenzie. “The source material was so beautiful to read,” says Plec. “It makes you feel like you’re living in memories. You want to live those memories and be on this island with all of your best friends. And of course, what better story to tell than one that starts happy and then takes a long, dark tour into the woods of twists and thrills?”
The pieces of the series are held together by Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence. Perhaps best known as young Amanda Clarke on Revenge, Lind is now in her early 20s and, after more than 10 audition callbacks for We Were Liars, was seen as the right person to anchor her own show. “We were looking for somebody who could believably play both sides of Cadence: the bright, sunny, carefree — sometimes a little careless — innocent, falling-in-lovefor-the-first-time Cadence, and then a much more weary and jaded version,” says Mackenzie. “Emily brought that.”
Keeping track of the non-linear events, along with the added challenge
of the duality of her character, kept Lind on her toes throughout the shoot. “The story’s very messy, and Cadence, as a narrator, is unreliable, which is really interesting,” the actress explains. “If you were to put yourself in Cadence’s shoes, you understand why she would be so confused, why this would be complicated, and why she would feel like she was being gaslit. I really used that [in my performance].” To feel grounded in the middle of the confusion, the Nova Scotian shooting location played a key part. “We were really isolated and it was very dreamlike but also haunting — these places right on the sea, miles and miles away from
Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) and Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) share a tender moment.
anything. We were stuck with ourselves and these beautiful homes and felt very immersed in the story,” says Lind.
While the eight-part show is very much a mystery, many of the cast members were there to explore deeper themes of family. The Sinclairs are a seemingly perfect, privileged lot. Like most dynasties, however, they harbour all kinds of secrets. “These are damaged, complicated, messy women,” says Caitlin FitzGerald, who plays Cadence’s mother Penny, one the three Sinclair sisters. For FitzGerald, the scripts — combining two of Lockhart’s novels related to the Sinclair family — were the real draw. “Often in shows, it’s either the teenagers or the adults, and these scripts really read as teenagers and adults,” she explained. “Everybody got really juicy stuff to play. Everybody was fleshed out and complicated and it was really gratifying to play the moms. Someone said, ‘We don’t just make sandwiches.’ It was really nice to be nasty.”
Not everyone was interested in portraying a bad guy. David Morse, who often plays the antagonist, wanted to make sure there was more to the Sinclair patriarch than met the eye. “I’ve been asked to play characters similar to him, these powerful men who are self-interested and can easily become one-note,” he says. “When I talked to
Carina and Julie, we talked about Harris in a much more nuanced way. The man adored his wife and really adored his grandchildren. His children he’s not so happy with, but at one time he adored them, too. He’s created this paradise for this family, an escape from the media world, and he wants it to be a happy place. When he’s forced to behave in other ways, that he doesn’t want to have to behave, that’s what was interesting to me.”
“What better story to tell than one that starts happy and then takes a long, dark tour into the woods of twists and thrills?”
Equally, the series is an exploration of young love, especially that between Cadence and Gat, played by Shubham Maheshwari, who visits the island with his uncle Ed (Rahul Kohli) and Ed’s partner, Carrie Sinclair (Mamie Gummer). “To Gat, Cady was a happy place. He met her when his dad passed away and he associates Cadence with something that pulls him away from that sadness,” says Maheshwari, adding that the show also touches on important, universal themes. “We talk about grief, we talk about wealth and how that changes the way people treat others. And, also, that feeling of being an outsider and trying to fit in. I think everybody will relate to something and take away something from it. That’s why this is so beautiful.”
A group of brash American socialites continue to shake up the stodgy British aristocracy in the second season of The Buccaneers
THE BUCCANEERS
Wednesday, Apple TV+
THE FIRST SEASON of The Buccaneers — based on Edith Wharton’s tome about five young American women shaking up English high society — ended in hopeful chaos. Annabelle “Nan”
St. George (Kristine Frøseth) went through with her marriage to Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers), despite being in love with Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome), in order to save her pregnant sister
Virginia “Jinny” (Imogen Waterhouse) from the clutches of her physically abusive husband Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick).
James’ brother Richard (Josh Dylan) and his spirited wife Conchita (Alisha Boe) severed financial ties with his family
and, despite Conchita’s family riches having vanished overnight, they decided their love was enough for a happy future. Mabel Elmsworth (Josie Totah) broke off her engagement-of-convenience and came out to her sister Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag). With Lizzy’s acceptance, she celebrated her under-the-radar relationship with Honoria (Mia Threapleton), sister of James and Richard. Despite Nan’s great sacrifice, it appeared that the world was finally the oyster of these best friends. Not for long, though. Hope for these girls and those around them is tested
early in the new season, while chaos continues to reign. First on the agenda is the return of Nan’s biological mother, Nell, played by Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester. For Nan’s de-facto mum, Patti St. George (Christina Hendricks), it is a moment of sheer panic. “She has kept the secret for 20 years and been successful at it. You can only imagine holding that in for so long and being confronted on the biggest day of her daughter’s life, publicly,” says Hendricks. “It is terrifying and I’m like, ‘Get rid of her.’ But I think Patti starts to hear Nell’s words and the blame that is upon her, and she starts to own it and restructure it.”
For Nan, her first encounter with Nell is one that barely registers, as her mind is on her sister and a life-long decision made in haste. “It happens so quickly that I don’t think it’s something that is processed,” says Frøseth. “I do think she loves Theo and thinks that it can work, but it’s all very complicated and not sustainable because it was so forced upon her.” There is an upside,
however, to Nan’s nuptials.
“After processing everything that’s been happening, it’s like, ‘I didn’t want this power, but if I have this power, how can I use it for good?’” says Frøseth. Duty vs. desire is not the only big theme in a season that, due to the unfinished nature of Wharton’s source material, is now free to explore new territory as the writers see fit. “All the permutations of motherhood — our characters becoming mothers but also having mothers and working out the background of some of the mothers and the way that that’s impacted the girls and the way that the mothers are learning from the girls and vice versa — is another big theme,” says series creator Katherine Jakeways Exploring a particularly difficult iteration of motherhood is Jinny, who — while at the beginning of season two is having something of a vacation from reality — cannot avoid a reckoning
“The beating heart of the show is the female friendship. For us, it is the most important thing about the whole show. The real love story is these girls.”
forever. “The truth of it is that she doesn’t own that baby,” says executive producer Beth Willis. “Her husband owns that baby, so she can never relax. And her husband, as we know, is not an easy man. We wanted to show the real stakes of it for her.” The story takes more than one frightening turn as Jinny attempts to protect her child. “It feels so sadly contemporary, in terms of how James manipulates the press and the narrative around the situation,” says producer Joe Innes. “Jinny becomes publicly known as a madwoman who has stolen her baby. Of course, the truth is entirely different, but the way he’s a powerful man, who can manipulate the tabloids into supporting his narrative, is something that still happens often today.”
What makes the show feel even more current is the way well-known needle drops are incorporated into the narrative. But the soundtrack is not the main reason these Buccaneers feel contemporary. “The music plays into it, but I think we talk about it as a modern show more than we talk about it as a period show,” says Jakeways. “We are very conscious of the period element of it and we completely embrace the beauty of the costumes and the locations, but in terms of how the characters talk to each other, the way they’re able to be a bit more emotionally articulate about themselves than possibly people would’ve been at that time, we [approach] it like people that we know in real life, in 2025.” This, above all, applies to the unconditional love between the five women. “The beating heart of the show is the female friendship. For us, it is the most important thing about the whole show,” says Willis. “The real love story is these girls. They are each other’s North Star, they’re #endgame, and they always find each other again.” ■
The sheer number of true crime podcasts and documentaries available is evidence that people love to learn about crime. In journalism, the phrase “If it bleeds, it leads” is a common rhyme to imbue a gripping story with as much detail as possible. On the police side of crime, however, a lot of time is spent on the actual investigation — until, that is, there are no leads left. These unsolved atrocities are frequently referred to as “cold cases,” and the number of them is rising.
According to an April 2023 piece by NPR reporter Eric Westervelt, “The rate at which murders are solved or ‘cleared’ has been declining for decades” and “dropped to slightly below 50 per cent in 2020 — a new historic low.” He goes on to write that “several big cities, including Chicago, have seen the number of murder cases resulting in at least one arrest dip into the low- to mid-30 per cent range” — a troubling statistic, to say the least.
Of course, another ’burgh experiencing a high number of cold cases is Los Angeles. The second-largest city in the U.S., the Los Angeles Police Department — like many metropolitan police forces — has been plagued by a growing number of unsolved mysteries for years. Luckily, the LAPD does have a cold case unit
dedicated to getting justice for victims and their families — and that is the subject of Prime Video’s latest procedural: Ballard, a new action series from author Michael Connelly’s Bosch universe.
The show follows titular Det. Renée Ballard (played by Nikita alum Maggie Q) as she commands a new and chronically underfunded cold case unit within the department. Acutely aware of the “poor reputation of the LAPD,” Ballard is determined to get to the bottom of some of the force’s biggest stumpers — as well as a few cases that didn’t get the attention they initially deserved.
Meanwhile, Ballard teams up with retired police detective Thomas Laffont (John Carroll Lynch, American Horror Story), who shares his sage advice, gleaned from years of experience.
“As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous
conspiracy within the LAPD,” reads the series’ synopsis. “With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch [Titus Welliver], Det. Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional
challenges and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”
While the 10-episode series itself is brand new, fans of Bosch — and its successor, Bosch: Legacy — are already acquainted with Q’s Ballard, given that the character was introduced during Legacy’s thirdseason finale, which served as a sort of hand-off between Welliver to Q.
“She’s fantastic as Ballard,” Welliver gushed in an interview with Parade
“I rang my bell when they were talking about her. I went: ‘Oh, if you can get her, that’s a home run.’”
According to Welliver, the first time they worked together on camera, the chemistry was instantaneous. “Maggie’s exceptional in the role, and she really gets it,” he said. “There’s a tone in the Bosch canon that needs to be adhered to, to a certain degree, and she got Renée immediately.”
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Connelly — who’s also an executive producer on the series — touched on what distinguishes Ballard from its predecessor, explaining that there’s “a fundamental difference in the characters in that Bosch, whether he had a badge or not, was always a loner. He was an outsider with an insider’s job. And Ballard, by virtue of what she’s doing and why she was chosen, shows leadership skills that Bosch doesn’t have.”
Taking on the role, Q told the magazine, was “a huge responsibility” that she has not taken lightly. “If I inherit fans from the Bosch universe, I’m lucky,” she said. “And if I keep them happy, I’m even luckier.” ■

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven inhospitable to dinosaurs, with those remaining living in isolated equatorial environments. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Enter Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), a skilled covert operations expert contracted to lead a top-secret mission to secure that precious genetic material. When her mission intersects with a civilian family whose boating trip was capsized by marauding aquatic lizards, they all find themselves stranded on a dino-populated island containing a sinister secret that’s been hidden for decades.
STARRING: Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Greyeyes, Kataem O’Connor In this Canadian-made apocalyptic thriller, the Freeman family hasn’t just survived the collapse of society, they’ve managed to thrive on a remote farm in the middle of nowhere (fending off the occasional raiding party, of course). When their oldest son meets a young woman in the forest beyond the fence, his need for human contact threatens to place the entire family in jeopardy.

QHow does this film defy our expectations for what a“postapocalyptic thriller” can be?
A I think 40 Acres becomes something much more organic in its storytelling, and it does so by really digging us into who this family is. We are invested in their fight to stay together. That makes us more heartened to the apocalyptic nature of their plight. It’s beautiful to see them living their daily farm life — to be putting seeds in the ground, to be chopping corn, to be burning the rot, surveying the land. Then for them to sit down and have dinner together, be cooking together, playing together? It’s all family life. And it’s the thing that’s at danger — our being together is at danger when apocalyptic forces come.
Q Hailey, this grizzled soldier, protects her family by cutting them off from the world. Can you unpack that mindset?
A Other people wanna connect to her, and she’s denying it. She’s denying it because of a history of Black and Indigenous people’s treatment in these countries. And yet, the thing that she fears most is probably the thing that will enable them to survive in a new kind of way . . . opening up is what she is growing into, and having much resistance to.
Q What exactly does 40 Acres have to say about the parent-child dynamic?
A
S***’s tough — whether you’ve got cannibals on your ass or you’re picking up kids from school in a regular world. Growing is difficult. Loving each other through the growth is difficult.

CURRENT GIG:
QMuch as a post-apocalyptic setting raises the stakes of any story, life for a parent — under any circumstances — feels like constant life-or-death stakes . . .
AComing from a Black parent’s perspective — thinking of the last five years and the George Floyd murder and Breonna Taylor — there is an inherent danger that is felt as a Black parent. Sure, in an apocalyptic world, it is that much more heightened because it’s not “shrouded.” But some would argue that it’s not shrouded in the present . . . The parenthood employed by [Hailey] in this aggressive, hardcore way is that I literally gotta make sure you f***ing survive . . . and if I don’t teach you to be combative strategically, you may die.
Q Once the mayhem begins in the film’s back half, and Hailey is fully unleashed, what are audiences in for?
AI think when you’re on your last, when you’re backed into a corner, [Hailey is someone who says] “Alright,
Set in an apocalyptic near-future, 40 Acres casts Deadwyler as Hailey, a woman descended from Black farmers who moved to Canada after the Civil War. Like her ancestors, Hailey and her Native partner Galen (Michael Greyeyes) fight to protect their land and the life they’ve built from outsiders who seek to devour them — even as their son (Kataem O’Connor) yearns to connect with the world beyond those 40 acres.
you wanna tango? Let’s tango. And if you think that I’m not going to keep fighting in the way that I have all my life, then you got another thing coming.”
That’s what she wants her children to have, too — the spirit of not giving up . . . and laugh in the face of danger!
Q Now that you’ve had some success, and have a bit more freedom and control, what’s your process for choosing the stories that you truly want to tell?
AI feel like I’m always fighting for stuff. Nothing’s a given — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It keeps the muscle strong . . . I know that I’m curating in a specific way, wanting to tell stories that are intelligent, that are dynamic, that show the full spectrum of what it means to be in this body, that are across genres, across mediums . . . That’s just important for me. But at this point, it’s [nice] to have more control to take one’s time — to develop things with folks who are of like mind or have a unique perspective.
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
