For more than 20 years, HBO’s Hard Knocks has been taking football fans behind the scenes of the NFL, with each season following a particular team throughout an entire season, from training camp to playoffs.
Imagine the same fly-on-the-wall documentary format applied to professional wrestling, an entertainment-oriented pseudo-sport in which outcomes are preordained and everything is scripted, and you have WWE: Unreal, a new docuseries that pulls back the curtain to not just reveal the “fakeness” of pro wrestling, but actually celebrate the art behind the artifice.
Over the course of five episodes, wrestling fans are brought into the WWE writers’ room, where chief content officer Paul Levesque (a.k.a. wrestler Triple H) and his team churn out storylines to populate 52 weeks of television across multiple platforms. According to the series’ synopsis, the drama behind the scenes “is just as intense offstage as it is under the spotlight,” as WWE stars are pushed to their limits while enduring physically gruelling spectacles in the ring while also testing their acting chops by performing as characters in the ongoing WWE soap opera.
Ultimately, viewers gain a whole new level of respect for the blend of athleticism and showmanship required to make it in the WWE.
This week’s debut episode takes viewers backstage for the January 2025 premiere of WWE Raw, featuring the main event between CM Punk and Seth Rollins. Subsequent episodes delve into the Royal Rumble rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens, and John Cena transforming from face to heel at the Elimination Chamber in March.
The fifth and concluding episode will take a deep dive inside Wrestlemania 41.
Whether you’re a wrestling fan or not, this fascinating docuseries offers an eye-opening look into how the WWE sausage is made.

As viewers have realized, Death is a far cry from the fearsome Grim Reaper, but a kind, gentle and empathetic entity. That, the actress told Tudum, has led the character to become a fan favourite. “How lovely would it be to feel like there was that person who sort of took them and took all of those feelings, and then all that insecurity, and acted as a guide into whatever is next,” she said. “And Death says it, ‘Now is when we find out.’”

We just burned through Duster. Great throwback sorta show. I loved it! So naturally they’re going to cancel it, right?
R.N., Langley
Alas, yes! It’s one-and-done for this 1970s thrill-ride about a criminal wheelman (Josh Holloway) who’s recruited by the FBI’s first Black female agent (Rachel Hilson) to take down his own boss (Keith David). Created by LaToya Morgan and Holloway’s old Lost boss J.J. Abrams, the show was a hit with critics, but from a viewership standpoint could never get out of first gear. Deadline reports that before U.S. streamer HBO Max officially announced the cancellation, producers quietly shopped the show to other platforms, but to no avail.
Gatwa departed the Tardis after only two seasons in a May 31 finale that saw the good Doctor
That Doctor Who finale was a stunner! So many questions! Did we know Ncuti [Gatwa] was leaving? Is Rose [Billie Piper] really the new Doctor?
T.J., Abbotsford
Oh, it’s safe to say that most people were stunned when the Fifteenth Doctor (Gatwa) suddenly began to “regenerate” — a plot device the British sci-fi series has been using for decades to pass the Tardis from one actor to the next. It’s often announced (or leaked) ahead of time when a particular Doctor is leaving.
But here, despite a few internet whispers, it was kept under wraps till the very moment that brilliant golden light exploded out of the two-hearted alien’s head. Speaking with aftershow Doctor Who: Unleashed (via The Independent), Gatwa explained it was secretly always his plan to only do two seasons, because “it’s a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally.” Still, the actor emphasized that saying goodbye was “bittersweet . . . I can imagine it’s been [that way] for all Doctors. Just looking at the console before
regenerating was like, ‘My God, this console — it’s been here for 60 years. And I was here for some of those years. How magic!’”
Of course, that was not the only shock of the evening. After the regeneration light subsided, the face greeting fans was none other than Billie Piper, who played Companion Rose Tyler from 2005-’06. Does this mean she’s the new Doctor? Unclear. As Piper said in a statement: “It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Who-niverse as I have some of my best memories there. To be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse, but who, how, why and when, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
That said, the future of the show itself is uncertain, given that ratings have been down, and it has yet to be renewed by either the BBC or global streamer Disney+. Could Piper’s buzzy return be enough to greenlight another trip through time and space? Stay tuned.
What’s up with Queer Eye? I need my TV comfort food!
V.P., Vernon You’re in for a bit of a wait, as Netflix’s Emmy-winning makeover show has only just started filming season 10. This time, Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Jeremiah Brent, Karamo Brown and Antoni Porowski head to Washington, D.C., lending their expertise to another crop of “everyday heroes” in need of a stylistic and spiritual reboot. “Just like the many heroes before them,” Netflix teases, “these deserving D.C. residents will be pampered and given the tools to continue growing, even after the Fab Five cross back beyond the Beltway.”
Unfortunately, this will also be the hit reboot’s final season — capping a journey that began way back in 2018, when Tan and friends gave the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy its own much-needed makeover.

I was rewatching the Pearl Harbor sneak attack movie Tora! Tora! Tora! for about the 50th time recently, and saw a name in the credits that I had never noticed before: Jamie Farr from M*A*S*H. I watched my DVD again trying to spot him, but no luck. Is it a mistake in the credits?
Y.H., Victoria Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) has been touted as the single most accurate portrayal of the attack on Pearl Harbor ever committed to celluloid. However, the movie was not a success in its era, poorly received by the American public. The reason seems to be that, unlike other war pictures that did very well at the box office, such as The Longest Day (1962), this one was about losing, not winning. It was also released at a time when the U.S. was embroiled in the Vietnam War and all things military were the subject of protests.
You are right about Jamie Farr’s credit on the movie. Farr is best known for playing Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger on M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983. He was originally hired for just one episode, but like Henry Winkler as Fonzie in Happy Days, something just clicked with audiences and he became a favourite — guest-starring frequently before he was promoted to series regular in season three. M*A*S*H was, of course, set during the Korean War. Farr actually served in Korea, and the dog tags he had around his neck on the show were the ones he wore while in the Army.
As for Tora! Tora! Tora!, Farr was actually an extra in the film, portraying a number of background characters — very easy to miss.

Having first risen to fame on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Jason Momoa returns in another epic tale of clashing kingdoms . . . except this one’s a true story.
Set in the actor’s native Hawaii and starring a mostly Polynesian cast, the series opens in the 1780s, when the territory’s major islands are bitterly divided, and certain ruthless leaders make a play for “unification.” Caught amidst the bloodshed is Ka‘iana (Momoa), a warrior prince who’s turned his back on his royal lineage. As he’s reluctantly drawn into the fight, our hero must navigate a viper’s nest of
competing agendas and tenuous alliances, with his own destiny and that of his people hanging in the balance. All the while, colonization looms from across the sea.
Momoa also co-created Chief of War with his friend Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, and it’s a passion project they’ve been waiting decades to get off the ground. “This is my Braveheart, this is my Last of the Mohicans,” the actor told GQ. “When I was a little kid, I looked at all these Native American movies and I love samurai movies and I love all these cultures . . . and so this is it for [Hawaiians]. This is our chance.”
ollowing a recent theatrical run, this spy thriller is now available to stream. In case you missed it at the multiplex, the film stars Oscar winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) as Charlie Heller, a brilliant CIA cryptographer whose world is shattered when his wife (Superman’s Rachel Brosnahan) goes to London on a business trip and is inexplicably killed. His bosses at the CIA refuse to take
action against the perps, lest it compromise their investigation into a larger criminal network. Charlie, of course, only cares about revenge, so he uses potentially career-ending internal documents to blackmail those bosses into sending him for special-ops training, determined to acquire the skills he needs to punish the bad guys himself.
Also starring Laurence Fishburne, Jon Bernthal and Julianne Nicholson.

But can they really make a fresh start amidst old secrets? The 52-episode season debuts with five episodes this Monday, followed by one per week thereafter.
Sofia Carson continues her transition from Disney Channel moppet (you may have seen her in the Descendants TV movie franchise) to all-grown-up thespian with a new romance flick she both stars in and executive-produces.
She plays Anna, a driven young American who gets to live out her dream of matriculating abroad at England’s historic Oxford University. Diligent student that she is, Anna has a meticulous plan for making the most of this experience — a plan that’s interrupted when she meets a disarmingly clever local named Jamie (Corey Mylchreest, best known as King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) and, in spite of herself, falls head over heels.
Based on Julia Whelan’s novel, it’s directed by The Inbetweeners creator Iain Morris, who told Tudum: “[The two stars] bounced off each other from the first moment they worked together, and clearly enjoyed trying to make each other laugh — and maybe cry? I hope watching the film

allows the audience to run through all the emotions associated with the wonderful, noisy, chaotic, unexpected, funny, heartbreaking experience that is falling in love.”
And beyond just a pretty backdrop, Oxford itself really set the tone for this particular romance. “It was an honour and joy to dive into Anna’s world of dreams, of love, of poetry — to study the great poets that walked the halls of Oxford, and who have since filled our lives with the magic of literature,” said Carson. “In 1833, Alfred Tennyson wrote, ‘It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.’
Two hundred years after Tennyson so beautifully uttered those words, they ring truer than ever — in the halls of Oxford, and within the heart of our film . . . Our story is a film that in every frame reaffirms the belief that life is too short to not live it in love. To not live it in joy.”
When HBO’s The Last of Us premiered in 2023, it was hailed as a long-overdue breakthrough for video game adaptations — a genre that, on both the big screen and the small, had tended to disappoint over the years.
Yet there was a second such adaptation that came out a few months later which, while not quite so ballyhooed, was undeniably another step in the right direction.
Co-created by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese based on the unhinged racing game that debuted in 1995, Twisted Metal introduced audiences to a quirky yet deadly post-apocalypse, where an amnesiac milkman known only as John Doe (played by Captain America himself, Anthony Mackie) was given the chance to change his life by delivering a mysterious package across the country. Teaming up with an axe-wielding car thief named Quiet (Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz), John was forced to brave an array of Mad Max-ish marauders

Season two revs things up as our heroes find themselves in a most twisted competition. Teasing this next chapter in an official statement, co-creator and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith said: “The stakes couldn’t be higher as John Doe and Quiet risk their lives to compete in a dangerous demolition derby tournament. Firing the starter’s pistol on that derby will be another fan-favourite from the video games: Calypso, a mercurial master of ceremonies who tends to put a cruelly ironic twist on the wishes he “grants.” He’s played by Barry Emmy nominee Anthony Carrigan.

Alabama-born funnyman
Dusty Slay returns with his second Netflix special. Shot at the Walker Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee, per Deadline the set will include the comic’s thoughts on “everything from milking cows to elevator etiquette.”
Slay has carved out a niche for himself on the vast and sprawling standup landscape as the workin’ man’s comedian (as evidenced by the title of
his first Netflix special, 2024’s Workin’ Man). And indeed, he tends to draw on his own bluecollar experiences for material . . . though he’s very happy they’re in the rearview mirror.
As Slay told 800 Pound Gorilla Media: “When people at the Lowe’s and Home Depot stores found out I did comedy, they’d say to me ‘Oh. Well, you’re not that funny at work.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I hate this job. I hate being here. I’m not being funny at work!’”

Aweek after his Apple golf comedy Stick wraps season one, Marc Maron returns to his roots with a sixth special. Panicked will, according to HBO, find the charming curmudgeon offering “his nuanced perspective on our increasingly uncertain world.”
No doubt, he’s got plenty to draw from on that front. But in addition to the worrisome state of the outside world, Maron also looks inward, to the unplumbed depths of his own past traumas.
Speaking about that process in a conversation with GQ ahead of this special’s release, the New Jersey-born cut-up mused on using pain to connect with an audience — even
an audience that’s out to forget their troubles for the night: “One of the things I learned from talking about grief, and the position that puts an audience in, and even just another individual, is it may be dark in terms of presenting it as comedy, in terms of trying to categorize what kind of comedy it is. But there’s nothing more common than grief and trauma. I mean, it’s as common as anything else that you deal with in a dayto-day life, and everybody experiences it. So if it’s dark, it needs to be exposed to light . . . The experiment of empathy and common ground with other people who have been victimized or in paralyzing grief? There couldn’t be anything more common than that.”
Join Australian chef Dan Hong as he explores one of the world’s true culinary hotbeds: Hong Kong. From there, he also checks out innovative fine-dining restaurants to see exciting modern spins on those old classics.
As Hong teased in a statement: “Running a few Chinese restaurants in Australia, Hong Kong has long been a big inspiration, and whenever I got the chance to go, I mostly went to restaurants on the central side specializing in fine Cantonese cooking. For this series, I decided to take a different turn, discovering the old-school institutions that have a rich and long history specializing in singular dishes . . . most are unfortunately a dying art with nobody in the next generation to continue the

The eight-part series premiered last week with two episodes. TV’s most iconic fashion battle lost two of its couture cornerstones in 2018, when Heidi Klum and her bestie Tim Gunn left the show and started their own stylish competition, Prime Video’s Making the Cut. That one wrapped in 2022, and it seems that Ms. Klum has gotten the itch to stitch again, as she now makes her illustrious return as host of Project Runway for season 21.
Despite the ongoing absence of Mr. Gunn (reportedly, he wasn’t even asked!), she’ll look to “make it work” alongside former Runway champ Christian Siriano as the contestants’ mentor, and a judging panel that features ELLE editor-inchief Nina Garcia (herself no stranger to this show) and

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

stars in a new sitcom based on her real life, co-created with TV legend Chuck Lorre
comedian’s distinctive standup routines forming the basis of a TV sitcom is hardly something new, with such hit comedies as Roseanne, Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and numerous others expanding on the real lives of its stars.
The latest entry in this pantheon is Leanne, a new Netflix sitcom starring and co-created by Leanne Morgan. Morgan is no stranger to Netflix viewers — her 2023 standup special, I’m Every Woman, is ranked among Netflix’s top 10 comedy specials — and neither is her series’ co-creator: Chuck Lorre, creator of such mega-hit comedies as Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory (and its spinoffs), Mom, The Kominsky Method and more.
As Lorre tells Netflix’s Tudum, partnering with Morgan was a no-brainer after watching her share hilarious stories from her life in I’m Every Woman. “If you’ve seen even 10 seconds of Leanne Morgan’s standup, then you know what a unique comedic force she is,” Lorre says.
For Morgan, who’s been kicking around the comedy community for decades, landing her first-ever TV sitcom — one bearing her name, no less — is nothing short of a miracle. “When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom,” she gushes. “It just goes to
show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”
The series follows the titular Leanne, and begins just as her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. “Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family, she will face this new chapter with grace, dignity and Jell-O salad,” reads the series synopsis.
Among the various challenges Leanne faces is the prospect of dating for the first time in more than three decades. “There’s the vulnerability of opening yourself up after being abandoned by the person you built your life with,” says Morgan. “It’s not just about meeting someone new. It’s about risking the pain of being hurt again.”
On the flip side, pushing herself beyond the borders of her comfort zone enriches Leanne’s life. “It can also be an opportunity to rediscover yourself and experience a kind of freedom you didn’t know was possible,” she says.
For Morgan, portraying a sitcom version of herself in a multi-camera comedy filmed in front of a live studio audience definitely took her out of her own comfort zone. “Learning a new medium was definitely a challenge — memorizing new scripts every week was totally new for me — but I loved it,” she says. “As a standup, the comedic timing felt natural, and filming in front of a live audience was especially comfortable. By the end of the season, it really felt like home.”
While Morgan may have been a sitcom virgin, Lorre wisely surrounded his star with veterans of the genre, with 3rd Rock from the Sun and Mom alum Kristen Johnston cast as Leanne’s twice-divorced sister, Carol, who may be Leanne’s polar opposite in every conceivable way, but is also her ride or die. Playing Leanne’s unfaithful husband, Bill, is Ryan Stiles, a veteran of The Drew Carey Show who’s spent decades delivering improv laughs on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Rounding out the cast: Celia Weston (In the Bedroom) as Leanne and Carol’s church-going mom, Mama Margaret;
“I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”
Blake Clark (The United States of Al ) as the siblings’ old-school father, Daddy John; Graham Rogers (Ray Donovan) as Tyler, Leanne’s son, a new dad cowed by his dominating wife; and Hannah
L-R: Daddy John (Blake Clark), Josie (Hannah Pilkes), Mama Margaret (Celia Weston), Tyler (Graham Rogers) and Bill (Ryan Stiles).
a younger woman.
Pilkes (Would I Lie to You) as Josie, Leanne’s irresponsible, rule-breaking daughter, who’s never managed to maintain a relationship or hold down a job.
“Leanne uses humour to cope.
Sometimes you just have to laugh to keep from crying. She leans on her support system — her family, close friends, and church community — to get through it,” says Morgan.
“The theme of starting over is universal,” adds Lorre, “and I cannot think of anyone better to combine heart and comedy than Leanne.” ■
Taron Egerton stars as Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator and former fiefihter.
Friday, Apple TV+
In Smoke, Taron Egerton plays an arson investigator trying to stop a serial arsonist with the help of a police detective who, much to his chagrin, has been tasked with assisting him. Immediately, a psychological game of cat and mouse commences, but the audience is likely to receive their first shock once they discover that protagonist and antagonist, in this case, are one and the same. Normally, a plot twist of this calibre is hidden at all costs, but what would normally be the biggest spoiler of the series is really not the reveal at all. “Audiences are so smart, they’re so ahead of you on twists, that I don’t feel like that’s the twist I care about protecting,” says series creator Dennis Lehane. The author of mystery novels like Shutter Island and the creator of the Emmy-winning limited series Black Bird was far more drawn to the psychology of the lead character than in creating a series-long whodunit. “Here was a guy
who was so deeply entrenched in denial that he saw himself as a hero, somehow overlooking the fact that he was very much a villain,” the author explains.
Lehane was inspired by the real-life story of John Leonard Orr, a California fire captain and arson investigator who turned out to be one of the most prolific serial arsonists in American history. “He was setting fires all over the damn place, and then he wrote a book about a heroic arson investigator chasing an arsonist whose arsons mirrored the real arsons with details only the real arsonists could know,” says Lehane. “I just thought, that feels both crazy and particularly American, that your need for celebrity overshadows your need for safety or self-preservation.”
Before he set off to write the piece, Lehane approached his Black Bird collaborator Egerton about the role. “He’s a rich, detailed character actor trapped in the body and face of a leading man,” says Lehane. “And Taron and I work well together because Taron only takes roles if something about them scares him. I only do projects if something about them scares me. I think we both like to dance

a little bit with the possibility of catastrophic failure.”
For Egerton, professional fear takes on many forms. “I think fear is based on not knowing something or a lack of understanding,” he says. “That also fits very closely with curiosity, and that’s a really important place to be if you’re going to embark on a creative endeavour.” In taking on the role of Dave Gudsen, loosely based on Orr, Egerton found himself walking the unusual tightrope of playing both hero and villain simultaneously. “There were times where I felt unsure if I was getting it right,” he says. “It wasn’t comfortable and I really did have

some crises of confidence over the course of the shoot, but I think that’s a worthwhile place to be creatively — to put yourself in a place where you feel challenged.”
Gudsen’s dual mission is further complicated by Detective Michelle Calderon, whose extreme competence and intelligence both excites and unnerves Gudsen. “It started with, ‘Let’s give him an antagonist who’s going to be very smart. Bring in somebody this guy wasn’t ready for,’ and that’s Michelle,” says Lehane. “But the more we explored Michelle, the more we set up someone as messed up as Dave is. And then I was like, ‘Now I’m going to have fun.’” The writer was thrilled to land Jurnee Smollett in the role. “What she brought to it was an embracing of the central chaos of that character,” he says. “You don’t judge characters like that. No, she’s just an extremely psychologically messed up human being and she’s trying to do her best in so many ways, but she’s not getting there.”
The more Lehane delved into these characters, the more apparent the story he wanted to tell became to him. “We
were writing about an emotional, psychological relationship and these little mini-infernos that were just blowing up everywhere in the storyline,” he reflects. “The show is about chaos. With this, I wanted to embrace the wildness of it. It just felt like there’s something inherently hysterical about the fact that Orr was writing a book while running
around doing his s***. I mean, it’s funny. And once I liberated my writers’ room, the show just took on a crazy energy.”
Making the juxtaposition between tragedy and chaos even more distinct is choosing Vancouver as the location for Smoke. “There was a cinematic paradox. It was this lush green world and the green with the red, to me, was a world filled with contradictions,” he says. “There’s real tragedy in all of the arsons. We never wanted arsons to be played for fun. But fire itself is an interesting thing. Fire is horrific. Fire is repulsive. Fire is sexy. Fire is the thing that advanced us as a species and yet can turn us into ash like that. We wanted the show to mirror that.” ■
In SEASON THREE of the sprawling sci-fi pic, humanity’s long-prophesied Dark Age is upon us, at the hands of a terrifying new villain
Season three of ambitious science fiction series Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov’s expansive world, presents a dark timeline. The collapse of the entire Empire — which mathematician Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) has been predicting since the first episode of the sweeping epic — is finally imminent, and whether one has accepted the prophecy, like brilliant young mathematician Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), or dismissed it like the Emperors of the Galaxy — Brother Day (Lee Pace), Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) and Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann) — the end is nigh. How that end is met is what
drives the next part of the saga. “Hari has a mathematical plan that can somehow see mankind through that darkness,” says Pace. “And we’re about to walk through that door.”
As previewed in Gaal’s premonition last season, the Dark Ages are brought on by a telepathic mutant that fans of Asimov’s source material have been anxiously awaiting. “The Mule is a personification of chaos,” explains Pace. “He has an ability to mess with people’s minds, get inside their head and make them do things that is not in their best interest.” He arrives to Foundation in the shape of Danish Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbæk, who is tasked with
grounding the series’ Big Bad with at least some shred of humanity. “He is a little bit Shakespearean, if you understand what I mean. A little bit over the top,” says Asbæk. “But my interpretation of the Mule is made in a collaboration with [series creator David S. Goyer], the writers, the directors and all my colleagues. Every single episode I try to create a different side to the Mule, and if you go through all the episodes, you’ll understand why I’m doing all the things I’m doing.”
Tasked with stopping the Mule from completing his mission is Gaal, who, after 152 years of intermittent cryo-sleep, finally is considered a peer to her mentor, Hari. “He respects her as much as she respects him and he is giving her space to become the leader and take his place,”
“Although we don’t have any mutants of chaos roaming around Earth right now, there are people who behave that way. What draws us, the makers, to this is that we are telling a story about here and now.”
says Llobell. “It gives her the confidence that she needs.” Nevertheless, rising to the challenge is something that unnerves the still-young mathematician. “She and Hari have a plan to get everyone ready and prepared for when the time comes, but it still is a shock,” the actress explains. “It’s the moment of truth and a bit overwhelming for her.”
The prophecy is also a conundrum for the Empire’s robotic handler Demerzel (Laura Birn), for whom the end of humanity may not spell an end to her.
“She’s seen it all — she’s lived for 25,000 years — but she understands that we are on the verge of something different this time,” says Birn. “For her, there’s the responsibility that she carries of the dynasty and humanity at a whole. And then there are the existential questions of what happens to her. She’s the last one of her species. What happens if the human species is destroyed? Is there possibility of a freedom? Is that something she wants or is it something that she needs to fight against? It’s the combination of making the right decisions and suddenly
understanding that maybe every decision is destructive.”
After centuries of leading his people with an iron fist and a healthy dose of megalomania, the character that has suddenly checked out from reality and responsibility is Brother Day. “He’s pretty certain that he has no control in the galaxy. There’s this robot who’s puppeting him around, that he wants to avoid because he’s sick of it,” says Pace. “He just wants to enjoy his garden, get stoned, play with his ferret and hang out with his girlfriend in the sun. I mean, I get
it.” This leaves more room for his cloned brothers, Dusk and Dawn, to finally meet the moment. “With the Cleons, there’s always this expectation that everything will be OK because they have so much power,” says Bilton. “That power is tested more than ever because it’s not power of brute force, it’s power of the mind that really disrupts their plans. From the minute you meet the Cleons this season, particularly Dusk and Dawn, as much as they are presenting this front of strength, I think they’re s***ing it.”
While there are many players on this complicated chessboard, what Asimov ultimately wanted to convey with his writing was quite simple. “Foundation is about our individual relationship to power and how ultimate power in the hands of one person corrupts,” says Harris. To Pace, the series may draw on fantastical elements, but abstract fantasy it is not. “One thing I love about speculative fiction like this is that it can take something that we are dealing with in our own time and examine it in a less serious way,” he says. “Although we don’t have any mutants of chaos roaming around Earth right now, there are people who behave that way. What draws us, the makers, to this is that we are telling a story about here and now.” ■
With Liam Neeson’s revival of The Naked Gun about to hit theatres, Pluto TV serves up the original Leslie Nielsen spoof and its two sequels.

ith Liam Neeson stepping into the shoes of a Canadian comedy legend in a new remake of The Naked Gun, the original laugh-a-minute movies are available for free on the Pluto TV streaming service.
Neeson has been best known for dramatic roles — particularly when utilizing his “particular set of skills” in action hit Taken and its sequels — before making a segue into comedy with The Naked Gun, playing Frank Drebin, Jr., son of the original character played by the late, great Leslie Nielsen. While the Canadian actor, who died in 2010, is remembered primarily for his comedies, it’s easy to forget that he’d
been a fixture on film and TV screens since the 1950s in purely dramatic roles. It wasn’t until 1980’s Airplane! that he struck comedy gold, his deadpan delivery of goofy dialogue propelling him to the biggest success he’d ever experienced when he was well into his 50s.
As Nielsen explained in an interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, his Hollywood career had taken him from leading man in films like Forbidden Planet to supporting roles (including the captain of the doomed cruise ship in The Poseidon Adventure) to playing bad guys (Barbra Streisand’s Nuts, his final non-comedic role). And while he knew he was funny, he’d never had the opportunity to demonstrate it onscreen, and had accepted he never would — until Airplane! came along.
“When I read the [Airplane! ] script, I knew exactly what they were after,” he said. “It was the greatest break of my life, in a sense, that I ended up working with people who spotted me for being the closet comedian that I was.”
That role led the creators of Airplane! — Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker — to cast Nielsen as dimwitted detective Frank Drebin in Police Squad!, a TV cop show spoof that shared the same sensibility. While the series was short-lived (Police Squad! was cancelled after just four episodes aired), they resurrected Drebin on the big screen in The Naked Gun, cementing Nielsen as a bona fide comedy star and spawning a pair of equally silly sequels.
“They had written something that was just wonderfully dumb and funny,” he told Fresh Air. “And they knew that if [we] approached their material with the same seriousness and the same gravity with which we approached our police television shows that we were doing, that it would be very funny.”
Whether Neeson manages to experience his own late-in-life comedy career surge remains to be seen, but for Nielsen, the Naked Gun movies proved to be an unexpected gift that delighted him as much as they did viewers.
“I never ever thought I could be funny anywhere but off-camera,” he remarked in 2008 interview with Den of Geek. “The second career, for it has been just that, came as a total surprise.”
In addition to airing on Pluto TV’s Summer of Movies Channels, all three Naked Gun movies will also air during the first week of August on the streamer’s Comedy Movies Channel and TV Comedy Movies Channel. The films are also available on VOD from Monday, July 28 through to Thursday, August 14. ■
STARRING: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach
The first film in the muchballyhooed Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, and re-introduces the Fantastic Four: Reed Richards/ Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/ Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Imbued with stunning superpowers resulting from cosmic radiation during a space mission, the heroes are Earth’s only hope when the enigmatic Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) heralds the arrival of Galactus (Ralph Ineson), a planetdevouring space god who intends to swallow Earth whole to sustain his own life force.
Home IN THEATRES
STARRING: Pete Davidson, John Glover, Ethan Phillips, Bruce Altman In this horror-thriller from the creator of The Purge, rebellious 20-something Max (SNL alum Pete Davidson) is sentenced to community service at a quiet retirement home where residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits, said to require “special care.” As his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, Max uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.
STARRING: Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Weissman, Debra Wilson For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as “The Ick” has benignly taken over the small town of Eastbrook, where residents remain blasé about its existence. However, there are a few who suspect there’s something far more malevolent going on — and they’re proven correct when monstrous mayhem is unleashed in this wild blend of horror and comedy.

QWhat is it about the world of Slasher, and now Hell Motel, that excites you?
AYou know, I think what’s most intriguing to me is our creators Aaron Martin and Ian Carpenter’s incredible writing. They come to me with such textured, delicious, insane characters every season. It’s been some of the most joyful creative work I’ve gotten to do in 30 years of acting. Every year on Slasher and then this year for Hell Motel, we break bread at Milestones, we have Bellinis and we talk about what season they’ve cooked up and what character they’ve thought of for me.
It’s quite a pleasure to be able to play parts that I’m not sure I would’ve even been considered for if I’d been [auditioning] with a pool of other actors. When writers you really admire are writing for you specifically, and have your voice in mind, it’s very special.
Q On that note, what exactly did they cook up for you this time?
A
Paige is a former scream queen who is past her prime, and sort of desperate. She’s taken a job at this weekend at the Cold River Motel, where she’s reprising her role as Caitlyn, [a real victim] who was murdered there, from a series of movies — and there’s a lot of shame there for her. It’s very interesting to meet somebody who is at the end of their rope; it leaves a lot of issues around morality. I also think you’re looking at a woman who, in this industry, was disposed of. So, I was very judicious about how much she smiled
MEMORABLE ROLES:
A longtime staple of Canadian TV, Paula Brancati played misfit valedictorian Jane Vaughn on Degrassi: The Next Generation, party-hardy realtor Jenny on Being Erica and even popped up in the music video for her fellow Degrassi alum Drake’s “I’m Upset.” Since 2016, Brancati has found her wheelhouse anchoring the wickedly silly Slasher anthology, portraying a wide range of characters who all seem to end up stalked by one masked psychopath or another.
CURRENT GIG:
and how she expressed herself in the first couple of episodes. She’s really a bit of an “Eeyore” [from Winnie-the-Pooh]. She doesn’t have that sparkle that she may have in her heyday.
And without giving too much away about her arc throughout the season, I think we see her go from underdog to having to defend herself and others . . . because things go sideways really quickly on this weekend. She’s also thrust into scenarios that she played out on-camera in her movies, so there’s a real surreal element of it for her.
QIs the balance between horror and comedy a tough one to strike?
AI think it’s the thing I find most fun about doing the show. What Aaron and Ian do so well is, you’re rooting everything in this very real place. The kills really matter and the stakes are very high; we’ve talked about it being pitched almost like an opera. But what I love about the slasher genre in
Sticking with her Slasher creators, Hell Motel casts Brancati as Paige, a washed-up scream queen tapped to appear at the grand reopening of a little lodge that, years ago, was the site of a satanic mass murder. Alas, that gory history soon repeats itself.
general, and what I’ve learned so much about, is the camp and the comedy that comes with it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but the performances are rooted in a very grounded place. That’s the magic — the special sauce of the genre of slashers from many years ago — that we’re paying homage to.
Q
Would you say this and Slasher are distinctly Canadian pieces of horror?
A In terms of the writing, what comes to me is the amount of care that they consider behind every kill. You’re faced with characters who on the surface are despicable, but [the creators are] always really intentional about showing us why they are the way they are — and maybe there’s a certain amount of compassion that’s baked into that lens of our Canadian writers. I feel like that’s inherently Canadian, to have horror be so full of care — even when the kills are really big and really bloody.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
